I knew that he wasn’t a grey warden, too many hints and spoilers to avoid but I have to admit my shock at the reason why. I’m delaying judgement because I’m still trying to get my head around it and how my PC fits in with the character.
Looking back, I can see the signs and the regret and the ‘not worthy’ – that his plans for atonement didn’t include a romance with an inquisitor. The line he gives you when you dance with him at the Winter Palace when you question him about dancing – his answer ‘in a former life’ which leads into the idea of how much did he play ‘the game’. His constant reference to being a grey warden as a promise – rather than about the joining or hearing the call.
His actions as Thom Rainier – are not the actions of an honourable man, of an honest man, nor a good man. Nor were they the actions of a man looking to a higher cause, it was simply about money and power. They were, put plainly, the actions of a man who played the game and lost.
Adding to that was him running rather than owning up to a mistake that got innocents killed as his behest.
I’m guessing you’ll have several choices in judgement – execution in Val Royeux, Life long imprisonment, serving the inquisition and finally, given the judgements and alignments I’ve had so far – to turn him over to the wardens.
I feel turning him over to the wardens would be the most ideal, the best choice for redemption and rehabilitation but I guess then you’d lose him as companion for the rest of the game. The grey wardens are full of criminals, bastard sons of kings, murderers and those who committed treason, he would not be out of place. If Loghain can redeem himself as a grey warden, then why not Thom Rainier.
I guess I’m at a point where I am trying to justify keeping him around outside of the romance. My Adaar is a mercenary, she too has killed for coin, and as someone says what is a soldier – but a mercenary with a uniform. Being the same but different – is that enough? The only thing I see separating us is that mark on my hand.
Gah, Bioware.
*flails*
(been doing that a lot in this game)
