Yeah it's hit the right notes for me so far.
As far as atonement I keep thinking of that line that the 12th Doctor keeps saying "Am I a good man?"
And a friend said to me today in response to my feelings about it all
@sgtsteel91 - I don't know. I will do a save before judgement and find out (unless others here know)
Ahhhh, the Doctor!!!!! I have to say that a ) I like Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, and
now that you've reminded me about that line, it does kind of resonate with the whole Blackwall situation.
So do you all think Bioware have come close to a truly morally grey character with Blackwall?
(They've done it with a few, but none have felt this close to the bone for me)
It's the closest they've come for me on this and a couple of other issues. I think there's a fair amount of nuance, from the mages to the templars to the Wardens to the Chantry, to the companions themselves. Even Cole has made mistakes that others might condemn him for - heck, some people would condemn him just for what he is - but isn't he ultimately trying to do good and to help people (maybe less helping with the daggers, though - heh)?
LOL, yes - and by all accounts one of the books goes into more detail about Cole in regard to that.
I do feel the mage/templar thing is far less black and white compared with DA2, so yes, nuanced is definitely the word I'd use.
I knew it right off the bat (or suspected highly) because

Exactly!
I agree that his character appeals a lot, even in his imperfections. Not counting the most obvious, he also has some fairly socially inept banters where he really doesn't come out on top. Big grumpypants. In spite of this, he's charming in his own, gruff way. Indeed, as an early flirt says, he's "oddly charming." ![]()

Ah, my favourite RPG of all time! So heavy with themes of memory and identity, sin and repentance! I didn't see the parallel at all until you mentioned it, but now I'll never unsee it.

Yes.
Oh and I guess its a matter of a person without resolution in his beliefs will change them easily, so yeah, 'The resolve' is so fitting for Blackwall.
Seriously. My "let's kill us some dragons" party is Blackwall, Cassandra, and Vivienne. I'm running a squishy DW rogue, so I love the fact that once BW and Cass have their guard maxed, they're pretty much invincible, expecially once BW gets his Walking Fortress.
Be sure to bring The Iron Bull at least once when killing a High Dragon.

A good man is not defined by the absence of mistakes. A good man recognizes the mistakes he has made and learns from them.

Did that. Spent the entire battle babysitting him so he didn't die horribly at all times. It was ghastly and un-fun. I wouldn't do it again unless I respecced him to weapon-and-shield. I like Iron Bull as the carefree 2-hander, not concerned about his health as long as he has a high damage output, so I role-play him as that... but it does limit his usefulness when tanking is the key to survival.
Was there ever a clear number on what Blackwall's age is? I imagine he's at least in his late 30s based on what he looks like in the game.
I figured he was between 40-50 since his face looks sort of older to me. I'd be very surprised if he was under 40. That's just based on my perception of his looks in game and the gray in his hair and beard in concept art, since removed. It's just an opinion though. I'd love to know the ages of all of the companions. I figure Blackwall is almost certainly the oldest followed by Solas, Vivienne, Varric and Cassandra.
Loving the Blackwall romance. It's been a good one!
So many posts to reply to. But I'm old and hate typing for a long time so I'm just gonna ramble
.
I felt like Blackwalls romance was just right. Not too much. Not too little. I think maybe the size of the game sometimes makes other things feel smaller? (if that makes sense). Such as companions and the story. But it is all there. There is just so much freedom to run around and take as long as you want between doing stuff that it makes other stuff seem smaller in size? But I still enjoyed myself, the story and the companions and most definitily Blackwalls romance ![]()
This part is spoilery to his arc so don't read if you don't want to see/know! ![]()
As to his age, I think it was mentioned by one of the devs before release that he was mid 40s? Hopefully I'm remembering that correctly.
Okay, more tomorrow if I get a chance! Enjoy the Blackwall! ![]()

I'd figure Blackwall for mid 40's - believe me I know! ![]()

I do that too.
Mm you guys have given me a bit to think about re his judgement.
I've actually not posted in this thread much because I didn't expect to care about Blackwall, but he ended up being my first LI and I adore him and him and my Cadash so much, lmao. So, waves.
Same here, actually! I went around flirting with everyone and ended up with him because he was basically the most realistic relationship to me and reminded me a little of my husband.
Just thought I would say that the quote about there being "...plenty of things in life worthy to die for, but very few things worthy to live for..." made me so happy I had to hug my husband and repeat it to him so he'd know just how much I love him.

Finally, an age-appropriate LI for me!

Ok, after 2 days I think I have fully recovered from the shock and I feel I can finally be objective about Blackwall, his character and the whole romance/revelation plot.
I hope I managed to express my thoughts in a proper way but I'm not an English-speaking person, writing this took me a lot of time and effort and also a lot of emotional involvement. Thank you for reading ![]()
Did you find the badge?
Also, you need to complete both Adamant and Wicked Hearts.
Ah that might explain it. I still have to do Wicked Hearts with this playthrough ![]()
I loved the dance scene in Wicked Hearts, if you bring him and completed the quest.
Lots of really nice little touches in the game in general, which I appreciate - I am genuinely sorry for the tech issues - they, and their current handling, mar and detract from some really good writing.
