I don't think Blackwall's past is all that much worse than Leliana's.  And he's closer to redemption than Isabela.

 

But I couldn't justify continuing the romance for my Inquisitor.  Too much sense of personal betrayal

Haven’t played the game yet, couldn’t wait to learn something about Blackwall, then accidentally bumped into a spoiler (the big revelation, that is) and decided after that I can spoil myself the whole character arc (ah, I know, I know, spoiling is bad...).

 

Brace yourselves, Wall of Text +5 incoming...

Blackwall’s been likened to Loghain (I hated Loghain, but could respect him on some level, and didn't kill him in the duel - let him redeem himself by becoming a Warden and killing the Archdemon) and Anders – they’re not quite similar, but I guess it fits. Also: Sten, Mordin from ME, Atton from KOTOR2. But what I wanted to do is to go back to KOTOR and bring up Revan.

Blackwall/Inquisitor is like the Revan/Carth storyline, just reversed. I wasn's around any message boards at the time the KOTORs were released, but I wonder if many people playing a light-sided Revan were upset for her/him being... well, Revan? How many people thought that Carth should never give a femRevan a chance because of her past... She didn't remember it, so there's no whole lying/running away thing, but the scale of things is somewhat... bigger. With Revan, we're not even talking cities, we're talking planets.

Blackwall's story is heavy, true (actually, a little *too* heavy). And it broke me a little, the way the Cousland origin did, because ouch, right in the feels...

But, as many have said already, he seems really sincere in trying to atone for what he had done. No amount of remorse or good deeds can undo the past, but how many lives he saved while pretending to be Blackwall? So yes, he deserves a second chance. I think I can also understand why he would change his name. Rainier hadn't been a good man, and he wanted to change that - to become a different man. Which I think he did. He can't forget the past... and it would be wrong for him to do so. But perhaps he can move on.

Having seen the whole Revelation quest videos, I definitely would have liked the post-revelations part expanded a bit in the game, like letting the Inquisitor be angry at him for lying and breaking her heart, but then eventually forgiving him. And, actually, more talks in general. Like... how exactly you deal with something like that? Because forgiving him for what he had done in the past certainly isn't the Inquisitor's call - she wasn't the one hurt. And just a little more of... well, dealing with things. Because accepting him right back seemed a little too hasty for me. Letting him rejoin the Inquisition, yes, sure, but continuing the romance... We have Blackwall dealing with his past, but I’d like the Inquisitor to have some more options to actually deal with what he had done. (I'd have written more, but I’ve already made a 30-pages fanfic out of it, so I'd better end the post now )

It's funny how each person/PC has their own deal-breaker. Most of the companions that we've had over three games have been pretty crazy/murderous, but I like most of them anyway.

With Zevran, I was like "Oh, you enjoy killing people? Come here- give me some sugar."

With Fenris, I was like "Oh, you killed all those lovely Fog Warriors that you befriended? Man, you're really hot."

With Blackwall, I was like "Oh, you lied about everything and are a murderer? Here, let me stroke your beard."

I think the main difference is that Anders wants your help in what he's doing while not telling what it is all about, and then blackmailing Hawke into becoming his partner in crime, while Blackwall lies, yes, but it is because he wants to keep the Inquisitor away from the whole mess. Like, Anders make you a part of his crime while trying to convince you it's a proof of your love for him, while Blackwall knows his crime is his own and doesn't want the Inquisitor to get involved because he loves her. Two different things.

 

So I'd say with the two of them it kind of makes sense.

Anyone know if you get race-specific dialogue with him beyond the initial "I thought you'd be human" line? I'm thinking of rolling a dwarf for more flavor.

 

Blackwall asks about your past if you're a dwarf. For me, romancing him with Cadash was hugely meaningful....it was really just that one exchange, but...so much shared background there.  I am curious how it goes for other races....I'd be interested especially in the Dalish elf.

If you are referring to people not liking Rainier because of what he's done in the past, that is never going to go away. That's like hoping an Anders or Loghain thread will not have the "Blew up a Chantry and killed hundreds" or "Was a villain most of the game" topics. 

Actually it was about your fixation on Josie and Blackwall.  Whether everyone likes or doesn't like a character I like is not an issue for me.

 

But I'm just going to take a cue from Bugsie.

Quick question about Blackwall here that I really want some answers (because the plot is driving me crazy but I won't be able to finish the game any time real soon - *hopefully by Christmas*).

I just finished the part about taking him to the Storms Coast for the Revelations quest. And after that I got his romance scene ("we'll regret this my lady" scene)... Is that his main romance scene? Or is there more after? Although from what I heard, the character's tarot card is supposed to change if you completed a romance with that character?

 

The card hasn't changed for me at this point, I assume he has one more personal quest? This is the first DA/ME game that didn't have a romance achievement so I wasn't sure tbh haha (and in Origins, your romance is "locked" if you get requests to kiss the partner). Yet, I'm still getting options to flirt with Cullen and Sera.

 

I just want to know how much more romance specific content will there be and when will be the real completion of his romance arc (card changes and sort).

 

Which main quests needed to be completed for it to trigger (I just started Crestwood after about 40+ hours in ><)?

 

And apparently he left your party during that final quest yea (which would sucks cos he's may main tank)? What kind of resolution will be best for him if you want to continue the romance arc? (So far, only Blackwall and Solas caught my attention well enough ;_

 

PS: I know he isn't a real Warden, that much is quite obvious... But I don't want to get too spoiled about the circumstances surrounding him getting imprisoned in Orlais... so say it in a more cryptic way?

There is another quest/scene related to him and the card will change then

You can't trigger the next romance scene until after you complete the Wardens and the Orlais plots. so just enjoy until then!

When he leaves, there are many different ways you can deal with it. It can be a happy ending, bittersweet, sad, angry, whatever you want it to be

Looking at my save files, I completed Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts and Here Lies the Abyss before the next phase of his personal quest triggered and the romance progressed. Just keep talking to him after the main quests, and things should happen eventually...the tarot card ought to change after you finish Revelations if you continue the romance. As for more romance scenes, well, there is a bit more than the visit to the Inquisitor's room - heh.

 It's hard to be Hella Cadash's boyfriend. She likes to make you look pretty, but unfortunately....she doesn't have the best taste.

And his plaid suit with his flower hat. I especially love this picture because it looks like Hella is defending him--which tbh, she kind of did, even as a DW Rogue, because this outfit and the Wedge of Destiny were so under leveled at that point, but I refused to talk them off him.

 

Blackwall: My lady....I'm supposed to be the tank...maybe if I could have some better gear, I could do my job be--

I love the last picture. I made Solas's armor after the Blackwall reveal when Solas was mad at him.

Tragically, it looks like I didn't loot one of the Keep doors when I broke it open, so Hella can't make the mace for him. I'll try to recreate it with a different character, but it makes me sad his girlfriend can't put it on him!!!

 

Wish the loot didn't disappear after you leave an area, but so it goes.

I think Blackwall's a better person then Leliana after DAI.

 

Both lived a lie in order to escape their past but Blackwall eventually owns up to it and genuinely atones by trying to be better than he was whereas Leliana continues to make excuses and justifications for her unsavory acts  and just became someone else's pet killer.

I did the Suledin Keep quest last night. Took ages, but finally did some crafting at the end. Crafted me a new battle axe - the awesome axe of super fun time. And of course Blackwall was with me, got some decent banter finally with Cole, Dorian and him. I did notice you can craft some formal attire too should make some special stuff then hit up the streets of Val Royeux!

Just finished my Blackwall mance playthrough. Definitely an interesting experience, and Blackwall is certainly a far cry from what I expected. 

 

He kind of reminded me of Nathaniel at times in terms of personality. Who I totally would have romanced if I was able to. Hngh.
