Yep. Just another example of optimism being bad where a "Always expect the worst. That way you are never disappointed." philosophy is better.

Except that doesn't apply to everything. Factions yes, but as far as followers go Rainier stands alone in that. The follower who gets the closest to screwing up is Varric being a part in releasing Corypheus, but that was completely unintentional since they didn't even know about Corypheus until they were there and as far as he and Hawke knew Corypheus was dead. They ever checked to make sure according to them to the point where whenever someone says that they mistook Corypheus' death the response is a resolute "He was dead."

its a double edged blade having that logic can make someone a downer and while occassionaly disagree with you i prefer your optimisim.

And TBF how do check to make sure cory was dead? The bastard pulls captian ginyuus alot. And blackwall isnt as bad as you claim he was a soldier following orders and it was a fubar situation and he seeks atonement? Doesnt you moral code ask for forgivness?

Being a liar doesn't help his cause and the Identity theft of a Grey Warden makes it a lot worse for him, if he was up front like Iron Bull. Then i would understand but hiding that guilt makes him very unhealthy.

I know, I just wanted to stay on topic by bringing it back to Blackwall. Guy ordered the death of a family and impersonated a Grey Warden in a misguided attempt to be a better man and bury his past. Do you condemn him for his crimes or do you try to steer him to a less self-destructive path of atonement?

...never quite realized how much the Wardens remind me of the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones, actually. :S

Yeah they're basically the same. And just like Jon Snow, some people need to wake up and see them for what they are: An organization with a single purpose: Protect the Wall/Defeat the Blight at all costs. And to do that you need ruthless pragmatism and getting your hands dirty. There's not much room for ideals and heroism.

we all lie about something and who am i to judge a man. Im no paragon of justice and morality. Sides i didnt know thomas rainer... i knew "blackwall". Im not excusing him but im condemning him. All a warden is is a promise

Nah BW did that for gold. And it's why he needs atonement at all. I suppose it's just preference and nothing to argue about - I prefer morally questionable characters and some prefer ideal characters. I can see how that's appealing, given how rarely we meet that kind of people in real life.

Awwww I just finished a fight where Hella took damage (this is very rare at this point) and Blackwall said "Are you alright, love?"

Is that a common comment? I hadn't heard it before! But I have the banter issue and I'm a stealthy high level rogue with Blackwall tanking, so I rarely take damage.

possibly im of the belief that people do a lot to keep sane/alive but can always do better. So i dont mind what people do long as its not uber bad

Nooooo I hate banter bug...I've never heard Dorian say anything like that. Ok I'm gonna be AFK till they fix it. Don't want to ruin my femquisitor playthrough.

I've definitely had the non banter bug despite changing up party members. Now I'm getting banter I've already heard :/

In regard to character arcs I'm glad they didn't go down the death=redemption trope in Blackwall's instance.

If nothing else make it up to me dude with some epic beard nuzzles.

My guess is that allowing children to die in order to save your own skin would count as uber bad to some. But devoting your entire life to make up for said mistake is definitely not something you do if you're beyond redemption.

Personally, I enjoy characters and stories like this. It's not as clear-cut at some would claim it to be, and that's exactly how I like it.

most people panic when they see a horrific sight like that add to him being a kid and outnumbered it was the logical(to some a cowardly) choice.

Exactly! I watched some drunks run over one of the many precious and pretty deers that live in the neighborhood I lived in as a teen and couldn't do anything about it but sit back and cry for the deer and watch the cop that arrived shoot it. Sometimes you can't do anything whether it be simply just that or panicking or whatnot. If I could have cured that deer I would have.

Funny considering she's a lot worse then Rainer was.

I swear she better not try to take the moral high ground concerning him.

Hmm, he did sound upset and shouted something when my mage took a dirtnap during one particular fight (things really did not go well) - but my sound was so low that I couldn't quite make out what it was.

I got the impression that she's the only one who doesn't give a damn about his past. Both Cullen and Josephine have dialogue about him after the reveal. I don't remember Leliana saying anything. For all we know, she may have known since day one and just didn't care.

This wasn't a combat dialogue, it showed up in the subtitles. It was during a Darkspawn hunting quest (Keeping the Darkspawn Down), so maybe it was specific to that region or quest? Who knows.

But during this quest, I have also gotten a ton of banter and one interactive banter!! (Which I got Blackwall disapproval for joining in on SORRY BUDDY BUT THIS IS MY SECOND ONE IN 100 HOURS OF PLAY IM TAKING IT) So whatever happened, I like it. :P

Guess I won't roll EK. I wanna hear that line instead of being the last standing badass in the battlefield after slaying a dragon single-handedly.

OMG guys, I think I understand the reason why I've taken to Blackwall so much as a character... I was a huge fan of the show LOST, a tv series all about redemption and regret.

My favourite character... Sayid Jarrah, torturer, murderer of innocents, former soldier in the Iraq Republican Guard...

Mind... Blown.

Doesn't everyone hate Vaughan? Although I didn't stab him, I did trick him into giving me his key and left him rotting in his cell. What can I say, I like to be creative with my punishments on occasion. But hey, stabbing him is good, too - I totally endorse using the murder knife on that jerk.
