Yeah my inquisition. <3 He didn't like the way I ran things hehehe. I conscripted the templars (They did after all ask me what I thought they should do.), banished the wardens (They're useful...but with Cory controlling them they needed to leave. It was too much of a risk to have them by my back), and sided with Briala with puppet Gaspard (my girl was an elf and after hearing of Celene's purge she decided to go with Leliana's plan. Elven spies did sound useful for sniffing out Venatori agents). He was so mad.

He pretty much fights with a dummy then storms off in a huff at least my character offered to show him the door though I would've preferred a punch to the face option. Alas.

Maybe you would have felt different if you were friends with him? That's when you get the conversations where he show his guilt. And if he storms off after act two, then you've basically only seen half of his character arc (and that's the part where he's supposed to be boring).

Blackwall is night and day if you're friends vs high disapproval with him.

He hates my Lavellan, and if she had been my first PT, I'd be waaaaay less fond of him until I got to a PT that got along with him.

I played my other mage in the hopes of agreeing with him (and making choices I found meh to do so). Even after reveal I found myself getting annoyed. (Especially with her backing up from him after he's in prison. Oh yes 6ft tall Qunari necromancer mage lady scared of the human man's grief. So dumb.) I romanced him in hopes he'd get more interesting...he has some sweet scenes but still hit all my meeeh buttons. (It also doesn't really help the action most in character for her is to conscript him because the get with him lines are so cheesy/desperate they make me ill. It's like TIL THE DAY WE DIE! To the millionth power).

So no he's just not for me. But I'm not gonna rag on someone for liking him though. Like whoever you want. XD

It's interesting the comparisons that have come up

Sten - no personal ambition, no greater good
Mordin - no personal ambition, greater good
Loghain - personal ambition, greater good

Then Blackwall - personal ambition, no greater good.

The way I see it, Blackwall was an ambitious, arrogant and selfish young man who squandered his privileged life. Even when he had a soldiers pay, position (of sorts), men and a degree of wealth he still had the selfishness and arrogance of youth. As an older man, he's a pale shade of all of the things he was, he's recognised that, and wants to move on, he also doesn't want to burden you or the inquisition for his personal failings, which is why he gets so damn mad at you for bringing him back for judgement. I think the only thing I haven't liked about the romance so far was the cut scene of you kissing him in chains. Eh no, my inquisitor wouldn't do that at all. I'd be putting up a personal cold wall for a time, much like the awesome winter grasp barrier thingo. But yeah I'd thaw.

Definitely the beard and the thought of what's under that damn padded jacket of his.

@ryzaki: Agreed. Hey, I can totally understand why someone wouldn't want to give them a second (or third or fourth) chance after everything that happened. It's quite understandable, but if it were me, I would (and did) come down on the side of Mordin. Bad things go down during wars - and yes, if you're talking about a sci-fi universe with planet-killing technology, sure, there will be devastation and death on a very large scale, just like what the Krogans did to those worlds.

But wars end, and while some enemies might be more, ahem, difficult to deal with than others, I just feel that you must keep trying in a case like this where the responsibility for setting things in motion ultimately does lie with the Salarian decision to uplift them. If you want to raise them to sentience and then use them as weapons, well, I feel that they had some level of responsibility to at least keep trying. They are their problem children in a sense, heh.

I loved the setting him free lines during that part, and all the romance that goes with it.

In fiction, I love the hell out of that stuff. In real life, I hate it sooo much. When it happens in real life, I feel like I'm waiting for the music to swell and I'm supposed to rush into the guy's arms and forgive everything, when really I just want to tell him he's watched too many damn rom-com's, and life doesn't work like that. But in fiction?? Give me your troubled men with the soulful eyes and all-enduring love! (especially if they're burly with beards or scruff!)

Yeah it's kind of sad you can't get back together with him during judgement without kissing him in public. That might've been in character for my girl.

Indeed. My main issue is they refused to learn. The turians do some screwed up crap too but they're smart enough to know when to listen to others telling them to stop. The Krogan failed at that.

They did. They had the chance to reform themselves during the genophage. It lowered their birth rates not sterilized them. The Krogan decided to keep killing themselves off after that. The salarians did give the opportunity to change and develop and they simply squandered it for the most part. (That said the Salarians weren't innocent in that matter either I agree. But the as the saying goes "you can lead a horse to water, you can't force him to drink.")

Yeah that just left me cringing and shaking my head at my PC. The "I can't trust you" and "Don't approach me" lines were most in character for her. She was hurt and angry and felt like a fool.

But yeah in fiction I sometimes like it. Depends on how it's done. Glad it worked for you though ^_^

I was personally cackling at the kiss in chains but I'm just tacky like that.  I was like "OH GIRL WATER U DOIN" but I loved every second.

She just loved him so much, poor dear.  Felt like a real C'EST LA VIE moment to me.

@ryz: Yeah - well, we seem to largely be in accord at this point. I mean, I can respect the reasons why you don't feel it's safe to give them that chance and also consider their post-genophage behavior as another sign of their inability to change. Anyway, at least this has been more interesting than the edits that I'm semi-avoiding because the author is a bad typist (dear author, if you typed an incorrect blank space after that opening quotation mark, well...it's kind of your fault - not ours!).

lol, my Inquisitor loves him but she never would have done that if there had been an alternative. Getting him released from prison already seemed like an abuse of power--which I managed to handwave because, come on, if they're going to save all of Thedas, I think Quizzy is entitled to the occasional perk--but making out in front of the entire court? Nah. I did like the scene (hopeless romantic at heart) but I really wish there'd been a "OK, I'm not giving up on this relationship, but we'll discuss it later, in private" option.

I also wish there had been a scene afterwards where you get to really grill him about his past. Sure, it might have been uncomfortable, but the transition from "I have to judge my boyfriend who I just found out had a bunch of people killed and lied about who he was" to "Yay, let's go back to smooching in the stables like nothing ever happened" seemed too abrupt. Maybe they thought they'd said everything they needed to say during the prison and judgement scenes.

(It totally sounds like I'm criticizing here, but they are literally my only issues with the writing for Blackwall and his arc!)

If Blackwall was a real person, mmm, dating him might feel like dating a prison inmate, with all the societal judgements and degree of shame that comes with it. Redemption in the real world isn't as simple as finding a good cause and fighting for it, although there is some measure of it. Good thing it's just fantasy then and you can mold the character arc to a personal definition to what works for you.

Now I'm trying to think of some fiction parallels that might be equivalent.

I don't have any issue with hypothetically dating a man who had committed some kind of crime or had been in prison. I mean its not an inherent deal breaker.

I wouldn't be interested in Blackwall tho, because he's very emotionally intense, and been there, done that, over it, love my stable kind honest husband to pieces.

I'd be more akin to align a real world equivalant for Blackwall as a peace time soldier who became like a merc for hire, like some of those companies do in the middle east and the 'job' is akin to wiping out a 'target' for cash, only to find innocents are collateral damage.

In regard to judgment, I say they should have given me the option to move him to my apartment in chains so I could carry out some retributive justice.

And without his shirt.

I would've loved if they kept stepping closer like they did, but depending on the line you chose you either kissed him on the steps or you reached out your hand to touch his face (like you do in the real thing) but instead you check yourself, and take a step back.

Either way, there was then a scene afterwards where you got to talk it over in private and have some ...ahem... reconciliation time.

That way, those quizzies that are like, damn the concequences! would kiss him in chains. Those who aren't ready, you'd see the desire was still there, but that they needed more time.

I have to admit, after hearing we kissed him in chains and all the talk about it (I'd accidentally run across that spoiler right before the scene), I was really ready for some great big, long dramatic kiss. When we didn't even get a close-up, I was like, damn! Kiss more kiss more!

But that's just my rogue quizzie. She's been trouble all her life. :)

She also let him sit in the skyhold jail (or so I headcanon) while she had a good, long think on everything that happened. After I did the mission to get him back, I went out traveling with Casandra instead for a good portion of one of the maps. I actually went down to the skyhold jail's one time, to see if he was there, but no luck. Finally, when I was ready to sentence and forgive him, I had Josie bring him up. So I was ready for the kiss by that time.

Okay, I got his personal quest and did it, but I think I cut off the romance somehow. There are no heart icons and Josephine is the one who came out after the ball. The only place I think that could have happened was right after Haven, I didn't choose the "I'm not losing you" thing. I assumed there would be an opportunity to continue the romance later. Don't tell me I screwed it up and have to go back. I can't dance with Orlesians one more bleeding time.
