I started a new game because I wanted to see if I could do it this time without bugs, and I chose the more assertive flirt in Haven. Wow, that was really unexpected! And totally worth it.

I found a workaround for the banter issue here and it works for me. It was before the patch, so not sure if it's necessary anymore, but can't hurt.

 

I successfully romanced Blackwall when I recruited Templars (he approved) AND made Dorian my bff. He kind of hated me at first, though. I killed some Venatori with him, did some of his operations on the war table and did his personal quest...

by showing him the letter and encouraging him to hear his father out.

 

I agreed with him on a lot of points in his conversations, but not all of them.

 

Back to Blackwall, you can actually flirt with him twice in Haven (not counting his recruitment mission) - once with "You're charming" option. Another time will pop up if you've found at least one of his Grey Warden shinies.

He will thank you for taking the time to help him and say how honorable you are and that he admires you. You can flirt in response.

Oh crap. Now I need to reload one of my old saves to see the second flirt.

 

I had no idea there was another one. This is my only real complaint about the open world. It's too easy to miss things.

Okay, the Crestwood fade rift......going through the flooded caves.

 

Funny bit.....

 

Take Cole with, he comments about what the nugs think.

Kill the nugs, he doesn't like that.

 

So then I replayed through that bit with Blackwall, Cole and IB in the party.

Blackwall gives his talk about nug racing.

Cole doesn't say anything.

Kill the nugs.

Get Cole's comment about 'They weren't DOING anything!!!'

IB then chimes in 'ugh, we;re going after THESE?'

both IB and Cole disapprove. (actual approval hits for killing wildlife....haven't seen that for any of the other creatures so far)

 

I laughed at that.

Seems Blackwall was ok with the Quizzy engaging in some random nug killing after he just told a pleasant memory about nugs.

I had a wonderful bit of banter last night between Solas and Blackwall.

First came a little conversation from Solas, apologizing for his reaction at the reveal, and telling Blackwall he'd made the first step in an important process. Then, my favorite, since I was not expecting it.... Solas asked Blackwall if he and the inquisitor were together! Blackwall says yes, and is ready to go on the defensive, but Solas thinks its a good idea and to find happiness where you can. All paraphrased here of course. It was soo sweet. Sigh.

 

It's probably time for me to stop dillydallying, and move on to the next quest in the arbor wilds. Today's the day.

I'm finally getting around to romancing Blackwall. With a (very British) dwarf. I feel like such a cliche.

I just checked, and I have Cullen's. I haven't tried it, so I don't know what Cullen's reply is if you break up at that late point (right now he tells me I'm involved with someone else, so he wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea). I didn't try out any of the other flirts (except Dorian's, of course! but that doesn't lead anywhere), so I'm not sure how the other characters would handle something so late in the game.

For many of the characters, the romances are built into their personal quests, but for some, they aren't. Cullen's is more or less independent of his quest. From what I understand, it plays out differently if you initiate romance after Perseverance is complete.

I picked virgins w romanced BW in the party and he didnt seem to mind...tsk.Alistair, Anders, or Fenris would've protested;-)

I got the start of Josephine's romance after leaving Blackwall.  Probably helped that I was at the right stage of her quest for it to work.

 

I ultimately backed out because I decided the Inquisitor was too broken-hearted, but I got the opening cutscene.

After doing his big personal quest last night, I finally got why Sheryl used the Johnny Cash song (God's Gonna Cut You Down) she did as one of Blackwall's themes.   That was playing in my head as I was in Val R.

It depends on how far you've gotten in character's stories.

 

Solas, for example, can only be romanced if you pick the flirt option in the Fade, and if you're already past that, then you can't do it. I think Cullen and Sera can be romanced at any time? Not sure about some of the others.

Heh I did that with Vivi and Cass in the party. Vivi approved. Cass was all scandalized and Viv goes "wait til you have to hear one snoring in your ear."

Hey, I only killed a few early on, well before I left Haven.  I needed an easy source of leather for crafting a bow.  The rest only die if they are caught in the middle of my Long Shot.

There's this dialogue with Blackwall that bugged me and seemed out of character. After his trial, you speak with him and he says something about how he stopped a tavern girl from being harassed. When you respond with something like "a noble act," he says something like he just did it because the guys were preventing her from serving wine. I couldn't tell if he was joking or not, but he sounded like he genuinely didn't really care about her well being. Thoughts?

Well, it could be either/or:

 

1) he is at his most self-loathing point in the jail scene, i don't see him giving himself a pat on the back or giving himself credit for doing the right thing

2) he really didn't give a damn at the time and he's letting you know it because it was honestly how he felt, remember he was on the run and probably bitter as all hell at the time
