I think he's still underselling his former self, but I also think he's telling the truth. That was his real low point, he was drunk and bitter and on the run and someone kept him from his liquor and he made them pay and accidentally looked noble. Maybe somewhere in that haze was genuine concern for the waitress, but I wouldn't whitewash it too much.

Blackwall needed someone else to see good in him to realize he could be that. He's way too prone towards accepting himself as "bad" because he makes good unattainable. That's why his resolve becomes so important to him--because he finally decides to stop giving in to the bad even though he knows he can't be this idealized version of good.

Well, this dialogue actually happens after the trial if you choose to keep him around and he's in the barn again. That's why it's weird.

I don't think it's weird. That brawl happened years ago when he was still a wreck and a "waste of life". At that point, he probably really only cared about getting his booze, but he's a different man now. He doesn't want the Inquisitor to give him more credit than he deserves. That's a fairly natural thing to do, IMO.

I'm trying to figure out if the wardens WOULD have turned him away, thinking he'd dispatched the real Blackwall.  In hindsight, he knows laughably little of the wardens, and the player knows why he was sent for a vial of darkspawn blood. I'm thinking some of this could have been avoided if he'd kept on going and told them the story.  They'd have been like, "*shrug* Occupational hazard.  Got the blood?  Good.  Let's go."

Okay. I've decided I'm going to romance Blackwall with a Qunari. I like Qunari and I like how Blackwall treats a FemQunari even though she's taller than he is. Plus I think they'd be adorable.

Nice, thanks.

It certainly is!!

I have this headcanon in mind where my Quizzie is completely confuzzled with Blackwall because she's not used to being treated so sweetly and like a lady seriously (sarcastically sure, but not seriously), so she's not sure how to react to his treatment of her... But she's secretly charmed by it. She's a little like Cassandra, secretly wishing for candlelight but not expecting to get it in a romance.

Is there any way of getting back the equipment he had if we left him in the cell? Or at least saving him, getting the equipment, and then jugdging him? The whole deal was really unexpected and I had pretty decent gear on him. This is something that happens in almost every RPG, and it sucks. I mean, in all cutscenes he is shown using his standard armor, implying that he left everything at Skyhold.

I'm sure of my decision though. He is a traitor, and the worse part is that he got men involved that followed him thinking they were doing something right. In my opinion he deserves punishment, doesn't matter how regretful he actually is. He fucked up pretty bad, it was not a minor mistake.

It might be a matter of just unequipping it prior to it.  Not sure.  Same with Sera, I suspect you'd have to unequip her too if you want to keep the gear but make her leave the inquisition.

I have a headache. I keep going back and forth between Blackwall and Josephine. I suspect because of the tension between "I (player) find Blackwall attractive" and "The Inquisitor sure has to go through a lot of drama. I'm allergic to drama." Help?

I am in your boat.

Blackwall and Iron Bull, though. God, it is actually hindering me from progressing.

Considering the fact the Wardens took Duncan, who they knew killed a Warden, as a recruit I have no doubt in my mind they would have taken him. Especially since he had the Darkspawn blood, and only someone who was about to take the Joining would even know to collect it.

See...I want to like him, but every word that comes out of his mouth makes me want to equip him with a dunce cap.  You know why the HoF isn't in this game?  Because s/he'd have throttled Blacwall in five minutes for saying something dumb.

I'm just embarrassed I didn't catch on quicker.  When he said you kill an archedemon by stabbing it 'til it stops moving, I seriously thought he was just glossing over.  Then he vanishes and...oh.

Sorry, what's HoF?

Nah don't be embarrassed, it caught a lot of people out.  Including a lot of people earlier in this thread.

I just got the impression he had no idea what the wardens rituals are, we know as players, cos we've been wardens.

Hero of Fereldan.

And, yeah, he doesn't, but a warden SHOULD, whic makes him spectacularly bad at pretending he's something he's not. I thought it was odd before I knew, after he just sounds like the comic relief character spouting made-up facts.

Romancing him to my qunari was cute, though. ^_^

But as far as I know with Sera you actually have to go and tell her to leave. Blackwall simply dissapears without a hint. It's not that big of a deal actually, the accesories were the stuff I was worried about. I suppose they are lost, I have a save I made before making the decision but in no way I'm going to change my choice just to get a few items.

Now that people mention it, it did felt odd for him to say "you hit it until it dies", but I supposed he simply didn't want to reveal the whole story in order to keep it as a secret between the Wardens

Well, he is partly right on that account, just not for the Archdemon!  I think also he's built on whatever myth of the grey wardens he knew, which isn't much by the sounds.

I knew better, but I peeked at a thread while my game was in-progress and unintentionally got spoiled on Blackwall. I knew that he wasn't a real warden, but I didn't know the specifics. It was easy for me to see how much he ducked and weaved when the questions got specific, but after a while I started to wonder if he was maybe this crazy fisherman that was in the letters we collected, like he tried too hard to join the Wardens and they didn't want him or something.

If the HoF was in the game, I would hope they would say what I said when I knew he was lying.

Rainier: "I was in Ferelden during the Blight."

Me/HoF: "No you were not."

I love this guy and I was put off originally by the beard. I don't like beards personally but he is such a gentleman and it really feels like he's your Knight and your his Lady. I found his romance was the most realistic with the heartbreak, the fight and the forgiveness. I grew to love his beard because it makes him seem so manly lol Even Dorian admits he's quite a man and calls him burly to you in private.

My favourite line of his is when you use the kiss him option repeatedly he says "So the the beard doesn't bother you as much as I feared it seems" and then walks back to the barn.

He might be becoming most likely to get me killed by having no idea about Darkspawn whatsoever. :D Even though I did end up finding out accidentally, I am still loving catching all the clues in there. Cole's banter with him is very insightful, and Sera... Lol.

However, this is all turning into serious behind the scenes fic fodder, I swear. I got this whole thing in my head about the Inquisitor starting to get suspicious and pulling Alistair/Stroud/Loghain aside and asking a few questions. Putting pieces together. And her reaction to it all, so much frustration. Ok. I have to write some stuff. Decided. :P There's a lot that I picture would have to go on behind the scenes.

It's working well with Cadash because her past isn't very squeaky clean, either. Also I think she may very well never have been called "my lady" in anything but a mocking tone. <3

Omg it's 3am. I have been playing too long. Sleep for me.

Oh, one thing I am not clear on is did he just order his men to kill the family or did he take part too?

I don't think he actually did any of the killing, but the details are murky. If I remember correctly, the codex states "Rainier and his men slaughtered everyone in sight" but Cole's reading of his mind makes it sound like he was standing there frozen as his men attacked the carriage. Plus when you talk to him in prison he implies only his men were involved in the actual attack, and I think he's telling the truth; he's done lying by that point, and wants the Inquisitor to know exactly what he used to be.
