After you know what his deal is, the approval one gets when killing darkspawn makes him seem like he's trying too hard. Someone else, on here or TVTropes, pointed out he wants a good look at warden artifacts so he can examine them before you do.
They took the wisest, old soldier archetype and turned into a gibbering moron. Stuff like that's why I like this game.
I just noticed that the prompt I selected for this round of Blackwall flash fiction (Before the Dawn) is the name of a quest...Specifically Cullen's Samson quest I believe.
Alright, finished his personal quest with the romance active (finally!). I'm guessing there's maybe one more scene (?) but my impressions so far:
I did the Solas romance first, and that was going to be hard to beat, but this is so different that it's hard to compare them anyway. What I like about both is the story risks Bioware took with both. It seems like a couple of the romances are pretty safe, and these are highly fraught. In both cases you've got a character with a crushing burden they can't bring themselves to put on another. The obvious differences are that Solas is a lot of dreamy introspection, whereas Blackwall is all chest hair and heavy metal. The parallels to a knight and his lady are obvious- even the fact that he calls her "my lady." I'm reminded of the later medieval romances where the concepts of chivalry have taken a decidedly dark turn.

Her first reaction after they get over the initial trauma and reconciliation: "War criminal I can handle, but you mean to tell me you're Orlesian?" LOL
It was so wrenching to see him evade questions about the Wardens, after I knew what was going on. It was pitiful in the better sense of that word. Maybe he didn't even know enough to know that if your Warden ally had dropped a mention about not sensing any taint in him, the jig would've been up. And of course Nightmare, that big spoiler dropper. At that point I had already kind of figured out what was going on, if not the details.
Obviously I said he'd be turned over to the Wardens. I can't imagine any more fitting end than to make the lie into reality. He had gone a long way into making it a reality already, the taint and official authority is just the next step. Leliana is also on the hook here for keeping her suspicions to herself. I did like the explanation that she's got a soft spot for Wardens.
One objection I have is that I wanted the option to bring a Warden into the jail and conscript him right then and there, rather than using the influence of the Inquisition to get him out. If you save the Wardens and especially if you make them allies, that should have been a no brainer.

I was wondering why that sounded vaguely familiar, although I thought it was one of the song title initially - lol.
I love this guy and I was put off originally by the beard. I don't like beards personally but he is such a gentleman and it really feels like he's your Knight and your his Lady. I found his romance was the most realistic with the heartbreak, the fight and the forgiveness. I grew to love his beard because it makes him seem so manly lol Even Dorian admits he's quite a man and calls him burly to you in private.
My favourite line of his is when you use the kiss him option repeatedly he says "So the the beard doesn't bother you as much as I feared it seems" and then walks back to the barn.
Haha, I normally don't really go for bearded guys, but I too learned to love Blackwall's beard.
yesss come to the small side, we have cookies and shoe lifts
I was BORN on the small side!
Has anyone come across the line in the bar in Skyhold where the barkeep notes that people are complaining that the Inquisitor has time to bed her companions? After I choked on my water, I thought, where are those people getting the plural?

LOL...Dennet clearly wants to get up close and personal with Blackwall's beard, too! This exact same thing happened to me once and I couldn't stop laughing:
I'm loving GamerMD's videos...the one where she finds him in the Hinterlands reminded me how excited I was to finally get his recruitment mission. I don't know if I want to watch the next one, though. She clearly already knows something's up but she's going to be absolutely heartbroken, she loves him SO much! From what I've seen, the reveal tends to split people into two groups: those who can't get over what he did and end up hating him (quite understandably, TBH) and those (like most of us in this thread) who come to terms with his dark past and end up with an even deeper understanding and appreciation of him as a character. I hope it's the latter in this case.

I feel so weak. Cadash is back on team Blackwall, for the moment. All the "my lady" stuff and talk about respecting and admiring her. She's never heard such things before.
I finally went ahead and finished the game last night, and oh my.

I loved Blackwell's comments at the well. If I had been tempted at all to drink (my rogue wasn't, because no way she was going to be drinking something like that, though she wasn't sure about Morrigan either), his comment would've swayed me.
When I finished the 'What Pride Had Wrought' quest, several characters had little cutscenes, and at first I was kind of let down that Blackwall only had a comment on it instead of a real conversation or cutscene. After I made some fantastic armor for myself as well as Dorian (us BFF's like to be color coordinated, I think Blackwall just shakes his head at that... though I'm sure he was appreciative of the silverite weapons), I went to talk to Morrigan, thinking this might be starting the end. Boy, was I happy that there was a pause between that part and the final quest, because Blackwall cutscene!

I absolutely loved this little scene, with the griffon carving done. So nice to see it painted and finished, and that it was for the children. You know that has to have all levels of meaning for him, after what happened in his past. Also, the delivery of this line completely melted me: "There's always something to die for. But something worth living for? That doesn't come every day."
I really loved how they handled the romance characters in end game. You got some special shots after the fight, and then at the end of the party
Spoiler for the line/scene after the final fight:

The look Morrigan is giving him here kills me. Like she's going, really?? This is Alistair and the Warden all over again. What is it with these hero types??
Some very end scene spoiler pictures, because I love it and have to share. Don't click if you don't want to see bits from the very last cutscene with the quizzie & Blackwall.

So I saved and replayed each of the choices, but my first choice and the one I went with for the end conversation, was "Who are you again? Rainwall? Blackrain?" I just loved it, because it kept things lighthearted, and they both were laughing. Plus, he makes my inquisitor smile, and when he asks what he did to deserve the smile... the look she gives him.
Sigh. Perfection.
Now I don't know if I want to do a elf mage to romance Solas, or a Trev Mage and do Cullen for a sweet romance after this one, or if I want to roll a male pc (which I hardly ever do) so I can romance my favorites of favorites, Dorian. So torn! Also, I know it'll be hard to not flirt with Blackwall. Maybe I should go Dorian, because then (unless I get the bug) the choice will be taken out of my hands!

That line Dorian gives when you romance Blackwall is the best. I know he must give lines about each romance interest, but that one just made me laugh. Banter-wise, I love the arc between Blackwall and Dorian. You really see them grow and accept one another, even become friends/friendly by the end of it. Bioware did such an awesome job with the banter this time, how it progresses and changes as the game goes on, and different quests are finished. It's one of the things I really enjoyed.

There's still a few of his men out there. At least one seems to have joined the Freemen of the Dales. We also know of the bandit whose note we find after Blackwall's recruitment. I wonder if there is more to this...

If it wasn't for the fact that nothing happens between them, this would have been yet another Bioware game where the LI of my choice is ruined because of them pairing people off.

Either that or it is some other soldier, for example one who served either Callier or one of Callier's friends, who wants revenge for what happened.
this would be my ideal Blackwall..
Love to see Anson Mount portray him in a movie wooo that would be so hot
Oh God, yes. I love Anson Mount! I also watch Hell on Wheels, but I usually only catch up when they have marathons (I finally gave up on watching it live because they changed the airtimes and I couldn't remember when it was on). He would be a good Blackwall.
