Blackwall Discussion Thread -- The Resolve! [Voiced by Alastair Parker]

Though I got the banter between Cassandra and Blackwall after the whole reveal where she's really blunt and cold with him and tells him to call her 'Seeker Cassandra' and not just Cassandra. I got really pissed at her at first then I had to give the writers some kudos because as much as my Blackwall loving Quizzy turned and glared at her, it did fit with Cass' personality. But the relationship between Blackwall and Dorian (who is my Quizzys bestie) is great. They go from antagonistic to reasonably friendly, even after the reveal. Dorian doesn't seem too annoyed about it. Who hasn't lied in their life seems to be his reaction.

Gyyyyaaaah, whyyyyyyyyyyyy. I was going to at least try to make myself romance Cullen on my current Nightmare playthrough, but I had to see that picture...I GIVE UP, BLACKWALL IT IS AGAIN! I was already flirting with him anyway - bah!
@katling: He does make Cass laugh after that, so I think things sort of warm up between them again after she does the "Call me Seeker" thing.

I can understand why she is be pissed off, Cassandra is a brutally honest no-nonsense woman so all this hiding past thing is not to her taste.
Lol "Call me Seeker"
That almost sounds flirty ![]()

Oh good. Because I had the knee jerk reaction of "keep on like that Cass and you're going to be staying at Skyhold" before I relented because it was in character for her. But I'm glad to hear she mellows towards him. I can certainly understand her reaction and it's very in character for her but it made my Quizzy scowl.

During that time period, I actually got my one and only conversation where the Quizzie can join in. He and Cassandra were arguing, and I got a choice of siding with one or the other or telling them to knock it off. I told Cassandra to give it a rest already (not in those exact words, lol), and the next banters I got between them were more pleasant. I thought it was funny at the time, since it was like she was thinking, okay for the sake of our friendship I'll try to be civil to your boyfriend. Hah. I'm sure it would've played out the same, even without the joining in conversation, but it was just so perfect.

@kat: Hahaha, yeah - I was like "wow, that's harsh, Cass!" but decided to stick it out because A ) Cass is cool and B ) I thought she'd probably mellow out later. She did kind of explode at Varric after you-know-what, but then she semi-apologizes to Varric over it later, etc.

There was one IB/Blackwall convo where IB was pretty harsh on him, even referring to him as Rainier, but given it was about the chargers defending the hill I say Blackwall was being a bit of a douche to IB and Blackwall had it coming.
I'm sure they kissed and made up though. Well, my head canon says they do ![]()

Towards the latter part of the game, I was facing really challenging enemies and I found that having two tanks along was a good idea, so I brought Blackwall and Cass almost everywhere, so I got a lot of banter for them. Their arc does get friendlier over time, and I think they reach a kind of truce, with some measure of respect, even. And that's fitting. Even Cassandra has to understand that people make mistakes.
That's what Blackwall's crime really was, a mistake. Yes, he gave a bad order, and he did it for selfish reasons, but not everyone is great at snap decisions. He did not have the luxury of a pause button. His men were already moving when he was presented with the opportunity to stop them. He could have, but he would have had to act quickly. Heck, I have *yet* to complete the Evacuate Haven quest without losing anybody, and I *do* have a pause button. He made the wrong choice, he comes to discover, and he realizes it immediately, but by then, it's too late. I'd have to be a hypocrite of impossible vastness to say that I've never made a mistake in haste and regretted it. So yes, I can forgive him, readily. I still want him to atone for his own sake, so my unromanced characters tell him to join the Wardens for real when the time is right (my romanced characters figure he's already risked death enough). I have heard people say that they can't forgive him, and I find that ironic. Many of them have needed forgiveness themselves. I guess the Golden Rule hasn't caught on in some quarters.

If it's the conversation I think you mean, starting with Blackwall asking what it feels like to be Tal Vashoth, I don't think he meant to be a jerk about it. He just worded it poorly, so it came out in a way that offended Iron Bull before Blackwall explained that he could relate. After that, Iron Bull even says something along the lines of "well, you could've opened things that way!"

I think it's confirmed that sometimes Blackwall is just really bad at being a people.
Pmuch, yeah, that about sums it up. Poor dear.

Yes, I expect all those years living alone, barely interacting with others for months at a time, didn't do much for his interpersonal skills.

Seeing people talking about Cassandra just reminded me of a banter I got yesterday (only one of the day...my companions seem even less talkative since the patch). Don't remember the exact quote, but basically she asked Blackwall why he was favouring his arm after a particular battle. He tried to brush it off, but she was like "No, get that checked out. You're still a member of the Inquisition and you continue to fight without complaining. I won't see you injured." I haven't had the other "making up" banter yet (the one where he makes her laugh) but I thought it was a really nice moment since Cass has been giving him a pretty cool reception since the reveal (putting it mildly). ![]()
I actually really like how everyone reacts to him post-Revelations. I mean, Sera likes him no matter what, but most of the others (with a few exceptions, Vivienne) go through a very natural stage of anger, resentment and disappointment when they find out the truth, but then eventually come to understand that he isn't the man he once was, deeply regrets his past misdeeds and deserves the chance to atone, as he's already been trying to. IMO this is the exact same process the player is intended to go through, though obviously some will continue to see a heartless bastard who doesn't deserve a second chance. Which is fine, we all have our own interpretations (as wrong as some of them are
)

Cole's perspective is interesting, because he obviously knows what happened from the get go, and his banters with Blackwall pre-reveal vs post-reveal aren't much different except in how they reveal information to us.
Haven't paired BW post reveal with Viv (hahaha I can't wait) or IB much, but I love his post reveal banters with Dorian, Sera, Varric, and Solas. It's jsut all done so well.

A random note, but now that I've seen his "friendship" scenes and the low approval "BYE I'M LEAVING" scenes -- In the friendship scenes (the one where you catch him working on the rocking griffon, the chopping wood one post Adamant), he is doing constructive things. In the low approval scene, he is actively beating the crap out of a training dummy (destroying it).
I thought that was a nice touch.

You should do the Blackwall & Viv thing. When she eventually starts trash-talking about his relationship with the Inquisitor, he shuts her up pretty good, with the added bonus of what he says being kind of romantic - tee-hee.

no I don't think it was that one, it was specifically about the Chargers and IB as leader sending his men to die defending the hill on the Storm Coast, it only triggers after IB's personal mission. It was probably the only convo where I thought 'Really Blackwall?'If it's the conversation I think you mean, starting with Blackwall asking what it feels like to be Tal Vashoth, I don't think he meant to be a jerk about it. Actually I am unsure whether I heard it or read it now, after I realised I had the banter bug I read a lot of convos on the web to see some that I might have missed. That and since I fixed the game, I've got convos firing off left right and centre during the game I can't keep up!!
I had Solas' apology last night after him being a meanie and Blackwall being totally up with 'I deserve your scorn' kind a thing, as well as some interesting snippets of Dalish lore and Blackwall being clueless about the Solas/Cole banter. Also, Here's a hint, don't desecrate elven graves till after you get their favour... Uh oh, reload.

I love bringing Varric to Val Royeaux when the revelation happens because he ends up saying two things that make me laugh.
First, upon the guilty party's list of crimes and punishment "Well this is grim".
Second, when Blackwall comes on the Gallows and is leading up to his reveal: "Oh ****...."
Varric, you genre savvy bastard.
Sera's got a line too and it made me laugh, but Varric's was just priceless.

I liked Dorian, because he went "who is this man to Blackwall? a brother?" and then kind of trails off, and I was thinking.... did you want to say " a lover" but then you didn't because his girlfriend is right there? But you totally wonder it because you guys are so in love???
...slinks away quietly, still waving Blackwall/Dorian flag.

Wait, what?
Dorian didn't say that for me, and I almost always have them in the party together, in that part specifically.
