If you don't see that side of him there, or in banters, he can seem very dour and try hard badass...and if you don't even get his approval up high enough to get his personal quest, you never know why. I can def understand the boring impressions, even tho I strongly disagree.

He's very much a read-between-the-lines kind of character, and a lot of his AH-HAs are seen in subsequent playthroughs.

I'm not surprised that people dislike Blackwall. It's easy to see how someone would think he's boring and then get furious when the things they do know about him prove to be false. You need to bring him with you and have luck with the banter to get to know him, specifically I think you need to get the banter between him and Sera. I liked them both more after each banter they had, but if you find Sera irritating and/or Blackwall boring then you're not very likely to pick them for your party.
Blackwall's not a flashy character like Dorian or Cole. He need more time, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people who find him dull now will change their mind after one or two more playthroughs.
I think it's the case with a number of the characters that you need to hang out with them a lot in the field to hear a lot of banter before you get a better picture of them - kind of like that Blackwall banter with Solas about, ahem, "relations" with Fade spirits. I actually thought Solas was a cool guy before that, but it seemed like he was super serious all the time. That particularly banter showed a more human side of him (so to speak) when he actually displayed exasperation over the question - lol.

Has anyone have screenshots or videos of the wooden rocking griffon he's making? The finished one, the one where it's painted, where he said "kids still need to be kids"? The scene triggered on my first PT, not my second one though.
Any pictures of it are appreciated ![]()

I don't get why so many people hate him. Thoroughly enjoyed the character and his romance. He looks so fabulous in full armor too.
Plus he reminds me of characters you'd find in Game of Thrones/ASOIAF. Tragic characters that make mistakes.

Here's the one I already had. I can get another one just of the griffon, I believe it's sitting there finished on his table after you beat the game. For me, the conversation fired up after Arbor Wilds and after you follow Morrigan into the mirror, but before you start the final battle.

OMG thanks!
I asked because somehow it disappeared from his table after I reloaded my 1st PT finished game, for some reason o,O most likely a bug though ![]()
if you could snap a picture of the griffon alone that would be awesome
this toy and his banter about nugs really shows that he could be a great family man <33

TBH, I havent seen much or any really hate for him outside of BSN. Even then it's more 'meh'. Nothing could compare to the hate I saw for some characters in the ME fandom (although Anders comes close.). He doesn't rate as poorly as others even in that poll. Merril rates higherI don't get why so many people hate him. Thoroughly enjoyed the character and his romance. He looks so fabulous in full armor too.

And the dog got 7 votes. Monsters. All of them.

I'm curious, does anyone else get an urge to curtsy every time Blackwall says "My lady" ? It sounds so natural and effortless when he addresses her. *sigh* My Trevelyan is completely smitten by him. ![]()

Totally agree with you. If he were younger, with a light stubble and some guyliner, there would be a lot more forgiveness going on. Look how many people loved Bishop (NWN2). That guy was NUTS!

I really need to come in here more often and enjoy the Blackwall love, I have one person I've been talking to that agrees he's not boring. I actually really like that he's not a warden added some unique things to his character and now I can very much pretend that he and my Inquisitor had a family later down the road not something I usually care about but after spending time with him and a joking remark he makes on the future I kind of wished I could talk to him more about it even if nothing came from it, still would have been nice and added another lovely layer onto immersion for me. After I'm done making my romance rounds trying each LI out Blackwall and The Iron Bull are for sure going to be my to go to romances love those two so very much ![]()

If any man could get me to curtsy, Blackwall could (him or Alistair for whom I still have a soft spot). I also feel the urge to jump into his arms almost every time I see him, but if my Inquisitor gave in to that impulse, she would never get anything done - hah!

I think I'm seeing the argument that he's 'boring' more than anything else, but I could say that about other companions I don't take out much. Personality wise he's staid, if he was the wild arrogant bastard of his youth again, perceptions may have been different. That and I'm pretty sure the banter bug has hit people hard. I didn't get a lot of banter until recently 65 hours INTO the game and then I had to repair it to get some Skyhold scenes to trigger (I swear I was treading water for about 10 hours going 'why hasn't this happened at Skyhold yet?? I reckon I got about 8 scenes firing at Skyhold once I repaired, including the Wicked Grace scene, one with Cass, Sera, Solas, Cullen, Josie, Dorian and finally the one with Cass/Varric I'd heard about that showed me a side to her that I loved. I'm pretty sure I've only scraped the surface of banter too, that will only be rectified on a subsequent playthrough.I really need to come in here more often and enjoy the Blackwall love, I have one person I've been talking to that agrees he's not boring. @Bugsie: Yeah - I popped over to the Hinterlands via the war table - next thing I knew I got two-three banters in pretty quick succession, including Blackwall banter with Varric saying that he'd been to Kirkwall around 20 (?) years ago. They ended up talking about the Hanged Man for a bit (which I hadn't actually heard them do before, heh). Have no idea whether it was traveling via the war table or just plain luck - go figure. I certainly hope they get that all worked out eventually.

The times when I've gotten interactive banter all seemed to happen when I'm in the middle of jumping or running. By the time I figured out I was involved in the conversation(s), it was too late to respond because I had either run/jumped out of range or was so surprised by it that I didn't click on anything in time - lol. I've tried to be more careful instead of bouncing around like a hyperactive bunny, etc., on my second playthrough.

I was wandering about, enjoying the new dual edged daggers I made for my rogue, when I got that hilarious conversation between Sera and Dorian.
Dorian: I can't believe you're scared of magic, Sera. It's a gift as mundane to me as your bow to you. Surely you see there's nothing to fear in a properly used tool?
Sera: Tell that to all the "proper" mages wavin' their tools in peoples' faces.
Dorian: There's an image.
Sera: What about Coryphemus? How many "proper tools" does he have under him? And the rebel mages? How many "proper tools" have they raised?
Dorian: That's not-- I don't think I can continue.
Sera: Right, well, I don't care how gifted you are. Don't cram it where it's not wanted.
And then Blackwall totally laughs, and it cracks me up.
Side note: I'm in love with the fighting animations using the dual daggers. And they are so pretty.
Sera is wandering off again in this picture. And maybe it's my age, but I find Blackwall so damn attractive (and Dorian too, of course, handsome devil). I would think his appearance would be a plus. He's like an extra-beardy Aragorn, lol. Or Wolverine. Or someone big and burly and beardy and unfff.

What is the difference between sending Blackwall to the wardens or set him free?
P.S. My female Inquisitor romanced him and I recruited the wardens to the Inquisition.

I loved that little cutscene. It was so cute he'd been making the rocking griffon for the kids! ![]()
It was hard to get good angles. I need to install one of those free camera mods, so I can get better views. Here are a few images, I cropped one down to just the griffon, but the others looked a little blurry when cropped. And then Blackwall came and sat in the chair, lol.

In game, none. If there is a later, we won't find out for a while.
