What is the difference between sending Blackwall to the wardens or set him free?

P.S. My female Inquisitor romanced him and I recruited the wardens to the Inquisition.

If you choose the setting free option, then he stays with you and the inquisition, free of taint and everything that goes with being a grey warden.

I haven't sent him to the wardens, so someone correct me if I'm wrong in this--

If you choose to send him to the wardens, then sometime in the future when the game is over, he'll go to the wardens to do the joining ceremony and become a grey warden, with all that being a warden entails.

The romance can continue either way, and he will stay at the end of the game either way (someone correct if that's wrong!). So it's really what feels best and right for your character to do, personally. Mine set him free. On another character, I'm planning to send him to the wardens.

So Duncan knew Blackwall, well enough to mention him to Alistair. Means he probably knew his secret, too? Why in the world didn't he conscript him?

I'm bad with the timeline, after DA2. Wouldn't Duncan have known the real Blackwall?  I was thinking it'd been well over ten years since Duncan died, and isn't ten years roughly the amount of time Rainer has been being Blackwall?

Totally unsure about the times, though. I know Hawke began with the blight, and then DA2 lasted roughly ten years?

Ah, true. Never mind. Alistair would never have seen him to know the difference. The strange thing is that Alistair says right away "you have a Grey Warden with you," as if he sensed him. I guess it was the armor.

Yeah, it seems that most Wardens can't sense others. I took him to Adamant, and he even gave a rousing speech and no one seemed the wiser. I read "The Calling" a while back, but I seem to think there was a Warden character that could sense other Wardens, but it was not something that they all shared.

Maybe with enough experience they can, or if the calling is close, or if they just happen to have that particular skill? (like the character in the book, if I'm remembering correctly!)

I took Blackwall with me on purpose to meet Stroud.  I was already curious about what Blackwall was telling me, and wanted to see if Stroud had anything to say about Blackwall. But, nothing!

Yeah the real Blackwall was in Orlais during the blight, writing angry letters to Loghain, so he def wouldn't have tried to recruit Rainier until after Duncan was dead.

Do we have any confirmation on what year that was though? I'm very confused about when Blackwall became Blackwall. I'm sure it's in the codexes and I just missed it. I'll check later if no one else does, but right now I'm doing a v important Blackwall related modding thing, which I shall leave a mystery and only reveal if it works.

Wardens can sense the taint, and they are all tainted, tbh, their ability is the most "if it works for tr plot, use it, if not, whatever" thing in the series lmao.

At Adamant there are tons of wardens and they're all in a bad place so that makes sense to me.

The weird one is when Alistair goes "and I see you've brought a warden!" if you take BW to meet him. There aren't any Darkspawn nearby, and it's not like BW is always gonna be in warden armor there so...how did he know??? Because plot. I guess. Lmao.

Someone (Bugsie) said a few pages back that if he had been "prettier" they thought people would have been more likely to forgive.  If he had been any better looking I wouldn't have been able to play since I would have been perma-puddle on the floor.  :P  I prefer rugged over pretty most the time.

I hate how I go days without posting and such so I try to smash a bunch of random everything into my posts...sorry!

But anyways, some of you were describing your Blackwallmancers and here is how I would describe my first (the one in my avatar).  She was an optimist.  Saw the best in everyone and gave everyone the benefit of the doubt, diplomatic, nice.  I always play my first person that way.  And it totally worked out for her and Blackwall!  <3

So when he says:

Spoiler
it was perfect!

Okay, I'll wander back in later.  Hugs to all you wonderful Blackwall lovers!

My Lavellan just went to find Alistair in her Warden armor and when he said "You have a Warden with you!", for a second there I was like "who, me?!", and then I used my brains. I'm a bit underslept

Anyway, on my first playthrough I'd seen some spoilers about Blackwall possibly not being a GW, but I didn't know for sure. I really wanted to believe that he wasn't lying about it so when Alistair said that line I was all "Okay, he totally sensed the taint in Blackwall, therefore Blackwall is a Warden, CASE CLOSED"

In the end I'm rather happy he isn't. He doesn't have to deal with the Calling and all that, so I can freely headcanon him having a long happy life with the quizzy. Especially since after seeing the epilogue, I'm NEVER giving him to the Wardens. I was a bit iffy about setting him free at first, but then i thought that I'm the Inquisitor and I do what I want. I've been fairly honorable and just so far, so I deserve some nice things in my life. Besides, none of my companions disapproved, so whatever.

Well I have Blackwall and Vivi and Sera in the same party.

The way Blackwall screams "MADAM VIVIENNE." oh god I can't breathe I'm laughing so hard.

i feel like Blackwall/Adaar needs so much more fluff -- the animations aren't great, but damn if i don't ship it

I'm doing a Seramance with Adaar, but I've flirted with Blackwall and I can see it.

Calling Quizzie "my lady" and being so enamored with her so quickly is just way more meaningful when you've spent the past 6 hours being called a brute and an ox-man by everyone and even sweet Josie acts afraid and scared of you. That's why I'm loving Sera for her so much too.

Having chosen female Adaar for my first Inquistor and Blackwall as my LI I think the pair works extremely well. You're definitely right about the animations. I only have 2 quibbles about the romance, first is the judgement/romance reconciliation scene, the second, animations for some scenes with femAdaar are off.

Never forget the shrinking.

It's as bad as that fan art I saw not long ago of femShep with a small blue child, I'm guessing supposedly hers and Liara's child, except that it was literally just Liara shrunk down to child size, 'no you idiot a child size head is much bigger, it makes them cuter and want to look after them, this asari child makes me want to run away screaming in terror about little blue people.'

My lady Adaar is an elegantly tall goddess! No shrinking violet!

I initially thought I'd romance IB - I don't think I've seen the animations of him with a femqunari, I'm assuming they're okay? And what about Josie or Cass? Anyone romance them with a male dwarf? Considering that the taller woman/shorter man can occur several times in the game, sort of dissappointed by it.

Have they seen his romance card? If they can look at that and not drool, they haven't got a drop of estrogen in their bodies.

First off, I apologize for asking a question which is probably answered elsewhere in this thread. I am afraid to poke around the forums because I'm only partway through the game and don't want to spoil myself.

My dilemma is this: I took a long time to decide who I wanted to romance, and since I finally decided I want to romance Blackwall, I haven't had an opportunity to flirt with him. In the meantime the game has given me the option to flirt with various other characters, which I hope means it isn't too late to start something. I have done the first part of Here Lies the Abyss, in Crestwood, but haven't yet started the Western Approach part. In terms of Blackwall's personal quests, I've found half of the artifacts for Memories of the Grey so far. Will I have a chance to initiate a relationship at the end of that quest? It looks like it will take a while longer, with the items scattered around so much.

If I'm going to have to dump a bunch of hours of play, I'd rather find out sooner than later, so I don't have to backtrack even more.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could answer this for me.

Have you flirted with him at all in Haven and right after getting to Skyhold? When you get to Skyhold, you can talk with him and he will invite you to the battlements, where you can flirt with him and initiate romance. I don't know if you have to flirt with him in Haven for that chance to come up, most likely yes. Sorry
