And I must say that I am saddened by it greatly, not only is Blackwall a hated companion, people also hated his romance the most, it pains me because Bioware might look at the numbers and think that it was a bad romance, this might prevent them from attempting to do something similar in the future.

 

I just hate it because if people took the time to see it, Blackwall is one of the most fleshed out companions in Inquisition and has a great romance to boot.

 

I cannot understand why people think he is bland or boring, if they gave him a chance they would see his innate awesomeness.

 

Anyway, I just needed a place to vent, going back to lurk mode.

I agree.  I loved his story and his romance.  It is my favorite BioWare romance.  Even over Alistair and Kaidan who have always been my favorites until now.  I think Sheryl did a great job with him and I will sing her praises forever!  And just in case she ever peeks in here I want to say: Thank you for the best romance in a game.  Ever!

Honestly, I think Blackwall's romance is veeery similar to Anders's, and obv the backlash there from a minority of angry fans on the board didn't stop them there. I think they write the romances they want, not what is going to be popular.

If Cullen hadn't been an option tho, I think it would be much much worse, so I'm glad he was for that reason, even though I didn't enjoy it as much. People who want a more storybook romance can just ignore Blackwall and be happy there.

As for the frustration, believe me I get it! I always seem to love the least popular or most controversial characters in every fandom, so I'm sort of used to it at this point, but it can still be difficult. Mostly with Blackwall, I'm just ignoring it. I'll stick my nose in and defend Sera occasionally, but whatever. Let the people with bad opinions have their bad opinions in peace, lmao.

I think Josie's response is more 'I don't want to think about it.' (I think she actually states that?) I took it as a profound disappointment rather than a coldness, it's definitely a shift in perception of him and an emotion I can understand on her side because I had it too on the revelation.

Ah, okay. That sounds more in line with her character.

Well, even ignoring my opinion on Rainier there are things from his romance I do not want to see repeated in future romances. Mainly the whole "leave you after they sleep with you" thing.

I think I already saw several threads like this, sadly with no answers from Bioware. And we also can't rename them, which sucks. I had to remember "good old times" that I spent with save management for Mass Effect when I had to write down number of save and which scene follows it, because there was no other way to figure it out, except DAI saves don't even have a number. Though it was a bit easier for me since I play one character at a time, so after finishing one playthrough I just copypasted all saves to another folder, but when you play several characters simultaneously..I guess you'll just have to copy each save right after you create it. Ugh..things are complicated 

I have a friend that is going to try to help me figure out how to tell which save goes to who so I can make folders for my characters.  I don't understand why they changed this?  In DAO we could name the saves and the previous 2 games each character had it's own file for saves.  That was so much easier/better!

Agreed on that, Kallen! At least its avoidable here, if you get lucky or metagame, but yeah like. I would be happy with no repeat of that.

There are other ways for men to be emotionally stunted dirtbag babies who can't deal with intimacy than that.

I think they'll look more at actual feedback, versus a straw poll with under 900 respondents - at least, one would hope. There are clearly those of us who appreciate a relationship that is more complicated and involved than some of the others in the game. And I think we've managed to articulate why reasonably well for the most part in here - heh.

Did you play SWTOR? The Sith Warrior has the most inspirational lines. I think of them often in times of trouble.

*pat pat* I have said that interpreting Sera's speech occasionally gives me headaches (has to do with reminding me of communication issues that I've had with certain authors, haha), and she occasionally pushes my annoyance button. However, I don't really get the level of hate for her (one of my friends really likes her).

She's a bit immature, but she is also quite funny and is good at taking a pin to overinflated egos, in my opinion. Things certainly wouldn't be the same without her (especially not without jars of bees to fling at people).

So did anyone else allow the wardens to stay in Orlais only to lose them at the war table?  I was like "Damn, I screwed up....  Its ok, I still got Blackwall to cover the need for them.  He'll know what to do."  And then the Rainer reveal I'm like "Crap!  I really don't have a Warden!"   Good times.

1) *I* am having fun. All that matters!
2) Polls are ridiculous. Really. People vote on these things that have only completed a single romance for example - how can you say which is BEST if you haven't done them all? So obviously, a poll will be weighted towards obvious options.

I honestly don't understand this poll business. Are people trying to validate that other people like what they like? Should I start a poll for "are straw polls from the BSN total rubbish?" Should I do a poll to see if I should do a poll? GUYS VALIDATE ME, I AM CREATING A POLL. (... ok no I am not really creating one).

In my "real life", I am a programmer, customer experience advocate, and data analyst kind of rolled up into one (my job is a weird mashup of so many things it makes my head hurt). A good deal of my job is figuring out customer satisfaction, and how to properly gather feedback. Surveys are good when applied to a large number of people, and when you know they've encountered what you're surveying them on. I know these are people just creating polls because that's what they want to do, but having had to actually design these kinds of things... I seriously do legitimately wonder why polls like this are so popular. Why people create them. Actually my inner researcher now wants to really find that out. :: Sigh ::

On topic: my *only* disappointment is that I wish I had a few more Blackwall scenes. Every time I turn around Sera wants to be up to something, but Blackwall is just so much more reserved about stuff. Moar Blackwall plz k thx.

I think a lot of the hate for Sera here comes from how she reacts about the Dalish stuff, especially if you are a Dalish and even more especially if you romance Solas. In those interactions there is no nice way to refer to how Sera acts. And this is coming from someone who isn't a fan of the Dalish.

Eh apparently If you play as an open minded Dalish who is not religious, you can do fine with her. Or a veeeery patient, flexible Dalish Dalish elf. That doesn't interest me from an RP perspective, really, so I will not be romancing her with an elf.

But honestly it's not because of that, IMO. At least not on these forums. They just think she's bratty and annoying and flat. Which yes she's bratty and annoying is subjective, but I veeeery heartily disagree on the last one. She's got a lot of depth to her if you take the time to talk to her and think about what she says, shrug.

Yeah, you can't really help but notice her dislike of all things Dalish. I kind of chalked it up to her traumatic childhood (well, it sounded like it was probably on the traumatic side). I played a human, so she didn't seem to have many issues with me, except for occasionally disapproving of magic-related things (my two Inquisitors are both mages, heh).

I'm really unsure which way I'm going to play my Dalish elf, Varriel. A snarky little upstart bastard is where it's currently headed...

The perspective on the elves from the elf companions is interesting. Both Solas and Sera not wanting to buy into any sort of victim hood status, despite coming at elven 'issues' from very different perspectives. The whole elven lore stuff is really interesting and I love they haven't made

I can tell you that I am somehow disappointed that Blackwall is so hated in this poll. In the poll in our Russian community he's also not popular as LI (less popular are only Dorian and Sera). But he's surely the most inspiring one. We have a poetry contest right now, and the most part of the best written and most liked poems at the moment are dedicated to Blackwall if I only could share them to you, I think you would agree, but they all are in Russian of course.

No, it's an either/or situation. I'd love if you could've gotten a second chance like you do with the DAO companions, but it's more like DA2. There's the one sex scene, and if you don't choose it, you don't have it. On your two options -- if you go somewhere private, you go to the barn and have the romance scene (and waking up alone in the barn). If you drink with friends, you have conversation and when you look up from the warden badge, Blackwall is gone.

 

I feel greedy, but I really wish we had more Blackwall scenes. Grabby hands.

I have to agree that the barn scene got me mad. I can deal with his crimes and the lack of professionalism during the judgment, no problem. But walking out like that? Not cool! It's the one thing that I dislike about the romance. 

 

I guess I get what they were going for with that scene, but it felt like he was just disrespecting her. I think I wouldn't have minded it so much if she was at least clothed or covered, not because I'm a prude but because I just think it's a douche move to leave her there all naked and alone. At least give her a blanket or something! What is wrong with you dude? What if she gets a cold because of you! 

 

Good job Blackwall, you just doomed Thedas because the Inquisitor got sick and couldn't bring her a-game to Coryphyfish. Bastard!
