@ Dark Knight - I didn't notice, but it makes sense.  Nice catch.  It makes sense that a man trying to invent himself might collect things to cement the new identity.

 

I just finished my 250+ hour first playthrough, and some thoughts:

Blackwall's romance card is HOT.  Deciding on party makeup took longer than it might have...

I have no sense of direction whatsoever.  At all.

I probably shouldn't make any social plans for the next month either.  Now I'm in a hurry to see how the story changes with other options and how the other romances are.  Blackwall's was really excellent, so I hope I'm not disappointed.

All I can say - Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) - I think I'm in now falling in love with beardy dudes who are tortured by their past LOL.

 

 

Yeah, I would pay full price just to watch Richard Armitage glare into the camera for 3 hours.

Happy Boxing Day (married to a Canadian here )!  Well, last night I finally beat the game.  Towards the end of the game, I really made Blackwall a tank with his armor and shield.  It took a great deal to kill him, so him being the sole survivor in many a fight saved the party several times.  So, since he was my character's tank as well as boyfriend, I took him to the well of sorrows and to the final battles.  It was cute how he kept saying he didn't want to lose me again, etc. 

 

I also loved all of his banter with Sera after Revelations.  Really, he was so endearing how he would try to make friends again with all the party members; my heart went out to him. 

 

I don't get why some folks don't like him or Sera.  You just can't help but like them when you hear their banter together.  It's sweet.

 

A side note:  Dorian will be my next romance.  He became a bestie and I adore him.  I loved after my character became an assassin he teased her about all the people she killed.  It's priceless what he says to her, so if you haven't taken that specialty yet, I recommend it.

 

And Solas... I need to know more, damnit!  He's going to be my 4th or 5th playthrough romance, so it's going to take awhile to get there and see if we glean anything further as a romance.

 

But I'm surely going to romance Blackwall again - he's just too delicious a romance not to.

@marlena: You sound just like me! I did pretty much the same thing. Blackwall became my tank, and I took him everywhere. Plus, dual daggers assassin rogue, here! Dorian was the absolute best. I loved the assassin convo. I also liked the little bit you get from Leliana with that, mentioned Zevran. I was like, oh? You have a friend who is an assassin? Tell me more!

 

I'm still stuck on making the perfect guy to romance Dorian with, because he's my bff and must have perfection! I'm also making a girl for Cullen, so I can do the templar path (which I haven't seen yet). I want to do the mage path with Dorian again, just because, Dorian!

 

Probably won't get much time today, now is the aftermath of events and the house looks like a hurricane hit it, so I have to be good and go do things I don't wanna.

Haaaa I'm playing a male elf currently, primarily because of Dorian! Blackwall was my S&S, and I was a two handed warrior in my first run. I want to make Quizzys for Cass and Cullen too. I have even been tempted by a fem elf for Solas.

Edit: Just saw the thread you were referring to.  Seriously FTS - any respect I had for that poster pretty much went down the tube with that stupidity.  Talk about insulting, and not to Blackwall, that doesn't worry me, I don't care if they find Blackwall Skeevy or whatever, but that other ****, crosses a line into personal territory that isn't worth my damn time anymore.

 

So have an angry panda.

I've read something pretty stupid about Dorian yesterday which got me thinking how happy I am to spend time talking about characters I do like. Much more fun.

My jaw just landed somewhere in the Deep Roads. Just saw the thread some of you were talking about, and yeah...I think I may be done for a while. Blackwall/Thom did some sh*tty things in the past, I think we can all agree on that, but apparently those transgressions just aren't severe enough for some people, who seem determined to ascribe various other crimes to him, too. In the past few weeks I've seen accusations of stalking, dog-killing (apparently, being a scared child who witnessed something awful and was too afraid to intervene now makes one equally guilty), and now the r-word. At this point, I'm seriously expecting to wake up one morning to a thread where someone accuses Thom Rainier of starting the First Blight.

Back to things that truly matter, like shirtless Blackwall chopping wood, because we were robbed of this scene in the game. Okay, there is a scene of Blackwall chopping wood in the game, but there's too much clothes in it.

I'm with you guys.  I prefer to spend my time talking about characters I like and not putting down the ones I don't like or being upset about my disapproval of x storyline.

 

It's BioWares story to tell.  Romance stuff is optional.  If you do it and don't like it you know to keep your distance the next time.  I sound harsh and I don't mean to.  I just prefer to be postive.  There is too much negative irl.

 

Like the fact that I can't figure out how to have more saves without overwriting or deleting!  *cries all over the place* My son said he would help me figure out which saves belongs to which Inquisitor and move them around after it wasn't so busy at work so I guess I have hope

I wish I had the time/knowledge to create a magic save game mover that could look at the saves, work out what character they're for, and copy them to a folder for archiving/tracking.

Well, I just made the mistake of reading a few pages of that thread and ended up writing my umpteenth defense of Blackwall. While I don't have a problem with people not liking him because of what he did and finding his original crime unforgivable, etc., it makes me steaming mad to see him and/or some of his actions misrepresented - like the accusation of rape. I wasn't a Loghain fan, but I didn't start accusing him of every crime under the sun either just because he betrayed Cailan (I can see some valid reasoning in him refusing to send troops in to Ostagar, so on that issue at least, I can dislike what he did but still understand the why of it).

I'm not usually easily bothered by this kind of stuff...I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, and if their opinion is boring or reductionist, I am usually content to ignore it, but yesterday I was sick and my kid was sick and haha, bad combination.

Yeesh. Even I haven't accused Rainier of some of these things. I even defended him(still feels weird) from the rape by deception accusation when it was on this thread.

Yep I'm not fond of Blackwall either but the rape accusation is just eye roll inducing. The man has enough flaws for you to make a perfectly valid argument with. No need to pull crap out your rear.

I was tempted to sarcastically ask if Isabela, Anders and Solas also raped the PC, since none of them tell you their birth names before you sleep with them. (In fact, we can assume Hawke still doesn't know the names Isabela and Anders were given by their parents. We only know what Isabela used to be called because of the comics.)

 

Of course, it's not just his name that Blackwall is secretive about - but the series is FULL of love interests who withhold vital information from the PC before sleeping with them. At least Blackwall (and Solas, for that matter) give you plenty of 'this is a bad idea that will end badly' speeches. That's is more than you can say for Morrigan, who fails to mention that she only came with you because she wants you to knock her up with an Old God Baby.

 

I think the important thing is that it's crystal clear to both the player and the PC that Blackwall has done something awful by the time you can sleep with him, and equally clear that he won't tell you what it is. The decision about whether to consummate the relationship is made on those terms.

Yep, he DID tell the Inquisitor basically that it was a bad idea and that they'd regret it.

Yeah, pretty much. If someone has a fundamental issue with what he did and who he was six years ago, cool - it's your right to judge him for that and to determine if everything he's done since then has or hasn't been enough to make up for it. But really, people shouldn't just start making things up just because they're upset over his leaving in the way that he did.

It's made really clear why Blackwall left during Revelations when you talk with him later. Heck, you even had the choice to just go to the tavern and have a drink with him instead of getting busy in the barn loft. And ultimately, it's your choice to sleep with him - if you do, well, he just can't put off leaving any longer, so hey, it was bad and unfortunate timing, but he had to leave eventually.

I did have a bit of a laugh over how Solas hiding his own secrets seemed to be excused away in that other thread just because of who he really is. If you consider that Solas is the one who essentially handed a nuke over to Corypheus, well...he was directly responsible for quite a lot of damage, death, and general misery (that's not even counting the other...thing...that he may have done but which we don't have an entirely clear picture of). Heck, I understood that Solas did it out of desperation

...don't think it was a smart decision, but I get that he felt there was no alternative.

 

Biiiiig mistake, but I still hang out relatively happily with Solas because he's an interesting guy (also because he's basically my designated Barrier king, hehe).

Yeahhh, that's what made me so mad (and the rape stuff), lmao...the "it's okay when my husbando does it, but this guy!!!". I love Solas so much, but he's just as big of a  bag of garbage as Blackwall is, if even more so, when it comes to lying to your lover/being awful to them. I don't want to say one is worse than the other or whatever, because I actually don't care to pit characters against eachother, but whatever.

 

I'm not down for the leaving after sex scene, tbh. I'm not as interested in excusing that away....it's really gross to me, and it made me really sad to see. That, added to the way he sort of turns the situation on Cadash (i did this for/because of YOU!!/now YOU'RE a criminal too) made it harder to forgive him, but while the latter ones were in a nice, layered, this is a morally grey situation way, the other just...blegh. But to me, while that was a writing decision I didn't particularly care for, it doesn't make his character automatically the _worst_ for me.
