Not romanced him yet, so I don't know how fleshed out he gets then, but I do love Blackwall, despite there being so little i can seemingly talk to him when in Haven/skyhold...for understandably reasons, he's reserved.
His storyline and personal quest is amazingly good though and adds a great amount of depth, making him arguably the most human character of the entire team.
Plus, he's such a goooooooood tank! Man, in my latest playthrough he's gotten me out of so many jams, it's unbelievable. Due to his toughness, he's also my number one choice to take dragon-hunting, sorry, Cassandra.
Spoiler
And yes, I totally picture him as a mace-guy. True, the sword is the hero's sword, but the mace is the common warrior's, the cleric's and many a Paladin's...he fit all of those criteria, no matter what he himself might say about the later ones.
My husband is used to my ridiculous ways, hehe, and at least I am consistent with my inconsistency. It's my brand of fiercely loyal but irreverent love that snagged him...I think.....
Ooh, whatcha planning on doing with him and Josie?
I, too picture him as a mace guy. Specifically, a banana mace guy.
This morning I was (respectfully, enjoyably) arguing about Blackwall on Skype and my husband asked me what I was doing.
me: I MUST DEFEND MY PRECIOUS VIDEOGAME HUSBANDO
husband: is this the one you were making fun of yesterday?
me: yes!! can you believe tanya is talking crap about him?? how dare she??? he's perfect???
husband: the "child murderer piece of trash *******"
me: yes!!!
husband: ....
It just cracks me up how I'll insult Blackwall til the cows come home, and not even in fair ways, but then someone else does and it's not out of affection....I'll turn on a dime and HUSBANDO DEFENSE SQUAD!!!! Dirtball. My dirtball. My poor misunderstood dirtball.
That's what's so precious about controversial characters. One moment you want to squish them with a hammer, another you want to squeeze them in a hug
Characters who are more or less white/black in terms of morals are like... "Well, Cole is kind and... sympathetic and... kind?" "Iron Bull is fun and tolerant all the way and... fun?" and then you have characters like Blackwall who are like "He did this but also that and how the Heck am I supposed to feel about him?!"
Not necessarily. You don't have to get the sex scene, it's easy to avoid. Just pick the let's hang with our friends option when you're drinking with him.
Yep gonna do this now. Decided to make her human instead of elf though. XD so I can get evade earlier and not die to fire mine spamming. *side eyes ventaori*
I don't think I can resist Solas if I make an elf >_>
The time that Blackwall was the last man standing after I had to deal with about 4-6 giants in a row (somehow I was a giant magnet, and it didn't matter how far away I was...they just all made a beeline for me as soon as I killed one, one after another...) was pretty impressive tanking.
Had the same thing with the Crestwood dragon, it just caught the rest of the gang by surprise. But Blackwall, down to three regeneration potions, no health potions and facing the dragon with 2/3rds of its health left tanked it to death. ![]()

Ahhh...makes sense, sorta. ![]()
Well the story will still be centred around Anna Trevelyan, but Blackwall will basically do Josephine's romance questline in the background. Which will also fit alongside his own questline when it comes to the Wardens and such...I mean what better way to avoid meeting the Wardens and being found out as a non-warden than being the hero of a lovely Antivan? ![]()

Soooooo true. ![]()
Kind of like Iron Bull's discussion about the Qun with Solas' though...there should have been more of that. ![]()
IB was frustrating to me because he did have a lot of flaws, imo, but you didn't get as much of a chance to really dig into them like you could with Blackwall or Solas or Sera.

True, he was more of a drinking buddy that you couldn't question so much. Sure, a bit at Haven, but it's not so much a discussion as it's you being...inquisitive. ![]()
It's seems I literally can't go five feet outside of this thread before someone is insulting Blackwall. It's getting a little old to be honest.
Ceoldoren, with your Dorian avi, I just heard this in his clipped voice lol.
Yes, the Blackwall Bashing is getting a little old. Shields up!

Eh, it seemed to me that this time P.Weekes tried to make all his companions super-likeable. Cole is sweetheart, Iron Bull is fun and super-tolerant-and-accepting and Solas even though can be an ass sometimes is polite and caring. That's what I... rather dislike about them to be honest (except Cole cuz Spirit). I remember characters like Oghren and Sten and Carver and now Blackwall - characters who can be hard to digest but that's what makes them intriguing
Sure, all Weekes' characters do have dark depths but... he doesn't let us explore them
Like Cole beeing a creepy serial killer Spirit-style like he was in Asunder. showing his natural spirit side in an actually creepy way which makes us question whether it's a good thing we have him with us? After all spirits have different values and morals...
Solas' almost demonic wolf side? I mean, seriously, just read the ancient elves tales of him. He was much more ambigious. Show this little trickstery dark side, please?
And maybe treating Iron Bull's overindulgence as an actual problem rather than a purely likeable quirk? Maybe him getting so drunk he can't properly function? Maybe him trying to fight madness and stress by indluging in lots of food and spirits and sex?
Blackwall has this darkside, this dark story element and it's just chilling to the bones in a good way
IB was frustrating to me because he did have a lot of flaws, imo, but you didn't get as much of a chance to really dig into them like you could with Blackwall or Solas or Sera.
Yep. You only can really call him out his views on Tal Vasoth as a qunari too and it's really quickly brushed off. That bothered me.
I really love Sera too. She's like a car wreck- horrifying, but I can't look away. I feel like taking her under my wing. Her and Blackwall together are just great. Haven't really gotten to know Viv yet.
I think BW did a good job in providing a good variety in romances this time. Blackwall's romance is dark, and not for everyone, but the Cullen romance is nice too and much lighter in tone.
I have always liked more problematic characters. Video games, movies and books are a great place to explore themes that are uncomfortable/taboo in real life. Plus, I was raised on telenovelas, so I don't mind that type of drama in storytelling. One of my favorite Mexican soap operas was about a man who seduced a woman while pretending to be her husband. That would be super gross in real life, but I was totally rooting for them to get together at the end. *kanyeshrug*
Ooh, what Telenovelas have you watched recently? Love them myself. Just ate up Teresa. lol that sounds bad.
I agree, I think this is why I know his romance will be one of my favorites if not THE favorite. I love the drama, angst and the past he has only makes him a compelling character in my mind. I don't want a LI that's too perfect - bleh.
I so agree, Chari. He made these wonderfully nuanced characters with very dark sides and then didn't let us as the player explore them. We can't call Solas out on his crap, we can't push IB on his views, and well...Cole I actually think was the best done there. But it's very frustrating. I am actually in the process of doing a PT where I get Solas's disapproval down to trigger the punching him scene before I romance him, because without being able to question him and argue with him and challenge him in any meaningful way, I find the relationship completely unfair. And this is coming from someone who loves the Blackwall romance. It's not that I want perfect people, it's just that I want a chance to be a flawed person with them.

That was what finally decided me on Dorian instead of Bull as my current qunari Inquisitor's romance choice - I think it's a really interesting character point that he basically says 'congratulations on not being a mindless savage!' but there was no way my character was going to forgive the insult to his parents and his old mercenary friends without being able to challenge that more.
... uh, and dragging this back onto topic, it is SO WEIRD going straight from female dwarf to male qunari. Everyone except Bull is tiny! Even Blackwall! It's so weird towering over him
. And I feel like I could just scoop Varric up under one arm and carry him. (Although my qunari is far too polite to actually do that.)

Yeah, all these three characters have so much potential for dark/good ambigious story which can make the player feel uneasy but in a good way
Explore Cole's nature as a spirit who used to murder people to save them and himself
Explore Solas' nature of a trickster who wasn't always good (I hope?) and like all trickesters could sometimes lead people to their demise for his own amusement. Or just that dark wolf-ey part, a hunter, a carnivorous, a predator
Explore Iron Bull's mad side, his desire to overindulge to the point of losing himself. His dark qunari side as a gear in a war machine
Heck, that's why in my main playthrough I keep Cole as a spirit (though I do actually think it's a morally right choice) and sacrifice the Chargers. The scene when he says sort of goodbye to their ashes... it's dark, it's chilly, it's heavy and it's such a breath of fresh air among all this cute-fun-sweet-caring-loving dialogues. Feels like the only moment when the Bull was... complete, as a character.
Eh I prefer sweet caring Bull over Qunari bull. I don't think that mask is gonna last much longer anyway and preferred the break be clean.

Yeah it's really odd you can't argue that more. That was a really missed opportunity. But most of my bullmancers tend to be humans so that's averted.
If only you could scoop Varric up ![]()
Well, I don't think Solas is actually a trickster. Iirc, there's a codex that implies it was a mistranslation, and he's actually rebellion.
But it does seem to be his friend, you have to sort of agree with him and look up to him, you don't get a lot of options to meaningfully disagree with him or realize how shady he can be. The worst scene for me was the friendship scene with a dwarf where he's like "oh no, i know dwarves better than you do, trust me, they're awful you're just a special snowflake" and I was like WHAT THE HELL WHERES MY PUNCH SOLAS OPTION RIGHT NOW?
He can be an ass, but you just have to accept it...whereas with Sera and Blackwall, you can call them out on their crap while being friends with them. I love the disapproval options with him because you can say, hey your'e being a judgmental jerk to elves and not helping them. Hey, your obsession with the Fade keeps you from having perspective on the now.
Like, I love Solas. Looove him. But I wish there were better player dialogue options with him, shrug.

YES.
I was looking for that "are you kidding me?" option but it never came.
Well least we can punch him. That's something I guess.

While the dalish did forget his rebellion part I don't think he is not a trickster. Gods and any kind of supernatural beings can easily have more than one trait, really. Loki was a trickster but caused a rebellion which got everyone (almost) killed. Artemide was a godess of virgins, but also motherhood and birth, and animals, and hunt, and being an ass sometimes. It's more complicated than that
Plus stories told by Felassan (an ancient elf) does depict him as a trickster. So...
Anyway, I do agree that I miss a chance to actually argue with him. And... wait, he also shames dwarves? really O_o? Solas, wtf XD?
And that is also a moment which makes Blackwall and Sera so precious - when you disagree or even critisize them they sometimes approve because they're aware of their flaws. Sera just called me crazyfor beliving in both Andraste and Elven Gods and I just snapped and said that it worked for her just fine... and she liked it XD
Yeah, he says pretty awful racist things to Cadash and Adaar, and you can't really respond. When Lavellan does it, he's like "oh, maybe I was wrong about the Dalish", but to them he's just like "trust me I'm real smart I know your people better than you". I wrote a really long meta about it on tumblr, lmao, I was so angry. Dwarves are just practical people with no imagination??? Um, hello, DAGNA AND VARRIC ARE RIGHT THERE, BEING MAGIC SCIENTISTS AND BEST SELLING FICTION WRITERS.
Blackwall on the other hand, both times he mentioned dwarfyness to my Cadash (the first cutscene at Haven and then when asking her about her background), she was like YEAH FREAKING DEAL WITH IT and hw as like "oh right yeah yeah my bad". I mean, even if he had been like "well dwarves suck anyway lol" I feel like I could have been all "WELL YOUR MOM SUCKS" with him.

I can rant about treatment of poor dalish by devs, Solas and almost everyone for hours so I rather stop here XD It is not Solas' thread anyway
As for Blackwall, yeah. He kinda does say some... racist things? Like he expected a human and stuff. And he sometimes gives weird look to Iron Bull and Dorian due to them embracing their femininty. But just like Sten he is aware that makes him an ass and he changes. He evolves as a person
And damn that prison scene was... oh my, emotional
...
Now I want to romance him x_x'''
Lmao, I feel you on the Dalish thing.
BUT re: Blackwall: Do it, his romance is sooooo good.

That reminds me, I had Blackwall and Dorian together the other day, and I was vastly surprised to hear Dorian making a comment that Blackwall actually looked dashing (something like that) but that he maybe should have worn a different scarf/sash. My reaction was: "Did Dorian really just say that?!" Blackwall was rather agreeable and said that he'd leave the color up to Dorian the next time.
This is probably one of those things that I should have written down at the time, as I don't see it listed in the dialogue wiki. Oh well, I can only paraphrase it. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I took both of them along when I did Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. They seem to get along pretty well eventually, and that was pretty amusing to hear. Hah, at least Blackwall is open to sartorial advice from Dorian!

Heh, it'll take them some time to complete the dialogue pages. Especially with this nasty... bug or something X_X
Hmm, a scarf... I'd say something red? But maybe blue? Dark-blue but not indigo... Not green, definitelly not green
