@ali: Yeah, I'm assuming that with regards to the name versus the title issue, it had to be (in part at least) due to the cost involved to record a bunch of extra dialogue just for that one thing - the money was really probably better spent elsewhere. Kind of would've liked it as an option, but I'm a realist; I'm also okay with the way it was handled in that I think he really did look at the "title" as representing someone/something that he aspired to be (besides, in some of the post-Revelations banter, companions will use his name, so we get a little bit of that at least - heh).

Fabulous find, Scuttlebutt101! That blog also has an MP3 of all of Blackwall's combat grunts...I listened, I blushed, and then I poured myself a cup of bracingly strong coffee. ![]()
Fellow Wall-climbers, my heart broke a little inside after doing In Hushed Whispers. Obviously, I took Blackwall this time around. Talking to him afterward, when he wanted to know what he was like in the future (in other words, "did I display the values I am trying so hard to live by now?" among other unspoken questions)- it was just so poignant. My IQ could feel the weight of his conscience in his words.
Of course, this could just be massive projection on my part, since I the player do already know his secrets.
But, I still liked the way that post-quest dialog played out, and it has been a really rich thing to experience, despite knowing what lies ahead.

@cat: Yeah, while on my second playthrough, I heard him ask that and ouch, my heart bled for him! After you learn the truth and go through with Hushed Whispers again, it certainly adds more poignancy to it once you know why it seems to matter so much to him.

i wrote a really long meta today on tumblr on why blackwall is so awesome, and it's not really anything new for this thread because it touches on a lot of the things we've talked about, but it does involve a long tangent about he's basically a character from a small town teen drama so?? here if you're interested

wow what a fantastic post Veeia! I was contemplating a post along the lines as to why certain characters exist in narrative sense and are important. It's why I'm seeing a lot of people on second and third playthroughs going, mmm Blackwall there's more to him than I first thought... (Sera, too, makes sense to the narrative for different reasons) I don't think people understand the idea that it's okay to still hate a character and for them to be well written, in fact it might be set up that way. It's dismissive of the writers to say 'I hate character x, they shouldn't be in the story, they aren't well written'. If people are hating on him for his actions as Thom Rainier, then the writer did a good job. I keep thinking back to Loghain, I hated him, not because he was poorly written, but because of his role and who he was to the heroes of the story, I was supposed to hate him, and I loved hating him. There is no way you can say Loghain was poorly written in that sense.i wrote a really long meta today on tumblr on why blackwall is so awesome, and it's not really anything new for this thread because it touches on a lot of the things we've talked about, but it does involve a long tangent about he's basically a character from a small town teen drama so?? here if you're interested

Remember that "You alright, love?" line some folks here were so desperate to here? I just took Blackwall, Vivienne and Cass to theStormcoast in a hope to hear some of their banters, spent about half an hour just hanging around. They completely ignored each other, but Blackwall just kept asking me if I was alright. It seems to be bugged, because I have finished the darkspawn quest long time ago, and I didn't even engage any hostiles. By the third time Blackwall gave me that line I was all like "Yes I'm fine now shut up leave me alone go talk to Cassandra already!!!" xD I think I'd happily trade a couple of are-you-alright-love's for some companion banter now.

Thanks for all the nice comments, guys! I felt v self indulgent posting it but then I was looking at the tags on the reblogs and it seems like a lot of people feel very protective of Blackwall and were glad to see positive stuff about him instead of negative, so I'm glad I did. We wall climbers have to stick together.

You deserve it, you did a great job explaining why we like him
Honestly, I think he's a character that's going to grow more popular in time. On your second or third playthrough, you already know what to expect at the reveal and won't be as angry/chocked as some were on their first run. And we all know that he's a lot less boring if you get his banter. It's a shame that so many people were affected by the banter bug.

But, when you joke around with friends personal lines tend to cross without one or the other party thinking about said personal lines. It is how the recovery after the line has been crossed that says if it is bullying or teasing. The tone in which Blackwall says "Now who's twelve" makes it clear that he was joking. The work are said with a laugh, but the tone is soft. If this was meant to being seen as bullying the tone of those words would have been more harsh.
A friend is someone who should know those personal lines and thus know what lines not to cross. Someone who crosses those lines and continues to cross them when the other person has expressed a desire for them not to is not a friend. And of course to the bully sees it as only joking. That is what the reason tends to be when called out on it. "I was just kidding/teasing/messing around/etc".

Some at Bioware have already joked how they wanted to do it. There is even an ingame reference to it. You find a note in Skyhold looking for people to join a choir known as the Singquisition.

Bugsie, I was talking about this, which was in World of Thedas v1, and I think is in Inquisition? (Leli''s office) So I should have said he was "making angry speeches about how Loghain is dumb"....but uh, I bet he wrote angry letters too.

Note to self, if this happens and they open auditions to the fans I need to send them a updated version of my vocal track. I have been singing in professional choirs since I was five, time to put my skills to the test.

Okay, but here is the dialogue we are talking about.
Blackwall: Sera and I were just talking about you. We need you to settle a question for us.Solas: (Sighs.) Sera's involved? So this question will be offensive.Blackwall: Yes, probably. Sorry.Blackwall: You make friends with spirits in the Fade. So... um, are there any that are more than just friends?Blackwall: If you know what I mean.Solas: Oh, for ... really?Blackwall: Look, it's a natural thing to be curious about!Solas: For a twelve year old!Blackwall: It's a simple yes or no question!Solas: Nothing about the Fade or spirits is simple, especially not that.Blackwall: Aha! So you do have experience in these matters!Solas: I did not say that.Blackwall: Don't panic. It'll be our little secret.Solas: Ass.Blackwall: (Laughs.) Now who's twelve?
Solas never says he's uncomfortable with it. He doesn't feel bullied. He's not like, WOOHOO I LOVE THIS,...His side of the conversation is essentially him making [disgusted noise]. Solas is pretentious and serious, but he's also playful and wry. He's not the type to be upset by this, but more importantly, if he was, he would make his disapproval very clear and Blackwall would back off.
Contrast this with these two banters where he does actually offend Varric.
Blackwall: I once met a dwarf who made the best home-brewed ale.Varric: I once met a Grey Warden who got possessed by a spirit and then blew up a Chantry and killed a hundred people.Varric: What makes people think you want to hear what others of ''your kind'' have done, anyway?───────Varric: You remind me of someone. Pious bastard, wore blinding white armor, told me my shots veered left.Blackwall: I can see how that describes me perfectly.Varric: It's just ... all that niceness. He was just so ... nice.Blackwall: Nice. Right. I take it you didn't like this person.Varric: Sebastian would have taken that as a compliment.
Sera: It's rough, innit, Blackwall? But they come and go.Blackwall: Sera, don't.Sera: Right, right...you're set on being sad forever. But then the sun freakin' comes up.Blackwall: Yes, well, it's not that easy.Sera: Didn't say it was. I implied I didn't care. Uh-huh, that's right. Implied.Blackwall: (laughs)Sera: You better laugh. I had to ask Solas for that one.

Anyhoo, I can't believe I hadn't seen that letter before! I thought I'd been all over the place and done all the convos and stuff. Having said that ... this play through I must have Viviennes approval so low she's starting pulling petty bs on Varriel. Came up to find her moving all my furniture around (never happened with Ciara) and being all ultra condescending about my attitude to how things are playing out.
Varriel's all, whatever, I'll just move my furniture back.
