Semi on topic -- do stories usually gloss over birth control methods, or use something like magic amulets, herbs or historical-ish condoms? When I wrote in DAO I don't think I bothered much on it, grey wardens and all. Magic amulets seem an easy way ((imagine Blackwall asking Solas for one for the quizzie, since he knows he's not really a Warden!! ahahahhaha)), but I'm not sure if they're too easy a way around the subject.

@sab: I've seen people writing about preventive measures like potions and whatnot... *facepalms over even knowing this at all*

Speaking of future musings for Blackwall, I saw the most adorable Cadash/Blackwall family pic drawing. They had a daughter and two mabari.

And those Halla statues, grrrrr *shakes fist*. There is another outdoor area where Varric is, similar but smaller to where the trellis you climb is, but I can't remember if I needed a halla statue to reach it.

I'm not big on fanfics at all, tbh. Some that I've read were really good, but they often tend to have characters act ooc, which kind of ruins the whole thing for me. When it comes to DA or ME fics, the author's Shepard/Hawke etc also tend to be too different from mine, which isn't a bad thing, but makes it really hard for me to enjoy the story.

Boo urns, I love the Winter Palace mission, liked the dancing scene myself. :P

I'm just allergic to everything Orlesian, lol (if I hear 'empress of fire' one more time in my tavern...). I thought I would enjoy a combat-free level, but I was itching to kill something about 10 minutes into the mission. And my tiny skinny elf girl looked extremely awkward leading the Duchess in a dance. Everyone clapping only made it worse. I try to avoid big crowds and being the centre of attention irl, so this scene was a nightmare. I wouldn't mind a dance with Gaspard, though. Totally fell for his charms ngl.

PS: Whoah, my posts today have been kind of grumpy, lol. It's been a crap day.

Awwww. My towering qunari loved the dance! LOL. The fact that Gaspard 'despised the game' won him some brownie points with me.

Most of the nobles we seem to come across are all game players to a degree makes them easy to dislike.

Interesting! I prefer to read fics where the Hawke or Shepard is clearly a different character than mine, instead of a generic stand in....idk, I like hearing about the different characters people come up with!

I'm also pretty picky about what fic I read though if an NPC reads out of character to me (esp if its one of my faves and you can usually tell this pretty fast ) then I back out and let them have their merry way, hehe.

@veeia: Yeah, if the companions in a story seem really out of character, I'm usually not into it. I expect a certain amount of verisimilitude, heh.

I hear you about fan fiction, actually. It's something I check for when a game or a character really captures my attention, but rarely do I find myself consistently enjoying it. Blackwall's fics have been a welcome exception for me. I think some of the themes that characterize his story (and the moral/ethical conventions that we are encouraged to question within it) are rare-ish in popular media, resulting in "meatier" fan fic. That doesn't explain the higher caliber of smut he inspires tho. :D

Well, while it may, unfortunately, give the impression of bullying to you for whatever reason, it pretty clearly isn't that at all. I mean, what can anyone really say? I think everyone gets that that's how you're viewing this because of your reason(s), but you kind of make it sound as if other people are wrong when they're just trying to point out that this is really nothing more than a funny and decidedly impertinent question, as opposed to being bullying or bully-like behavior.

I'm sure that the writers were just trying to write some fairly funny dialogue, but I guess they weren't able to account for the more unusual reactions people might have to this particular banter. I'm just going to say that your take on this thing strikes me as being, well, on the unusual side. Being companionable/friendly most of the time doesn't mean you can't have the occasional ribbing and/or off-color questions. Blackwall does seem like kind of an earthy guy, and Sera can be crass and vulgar (but also entertaining), so I can kind of see it happening, especially if Sera is instigating.

My opinion is that the companions are all supposed to have different sides to their personalities. Sometimes they might display humor, vulgarity, kindness, sorrow, anger, etc. So yeah, maybe you have someone firing off a rude question/whatever once in a while or being a jerk, etc. To me, that makes them a bit more realistic, instead of forcing them to behave within a narrow set of parameters. *shrug*

Sorry if it seemed like I was saying people were wrong to think otherwise. I was just trying to justify my viewpoint by arguing how I saw the banter. People can think of it however they like.

I have no doubt that Sheryl Chee's Patrick Weekes' intention was to have some fun banter, since that can be seen with the other banters between those two characters. But that one didn't do that for me. Like I said, I never called Rainier a bully, just that dialogue seemed bully-like and thus didn't like it. But I guess thinking a banter makes someone appear like that means the same as accusing said person of being that. I know I am an outlier in reaction to that banter, but I am allowed to say I don't like it and it feels like this without having to justify my opinion.

I never said characters couldn't just be certain things all the time, so I don't really know how to reply to this last part.

You call it bullying, I call it friendly teasing. I thought it was obvious that Solas wasn't that offended, I mean he played a long. If he really didn't want them to go there he could have just switched the subject to something completely different instead of discussing his relationship with spirits. The ass comment was basically just "I can't come up with a witty retort so I'm just gonna call you an ass instead". And Blackwall's totally fine with being called that, because he knows that he deserves it. Friends (and siblings) do things like that all the time.

But it's clear from the other banter between them that they are friends, and that they have a lot of respect for each other. Sure, Solas gets mad after Blackwall's reveal but he comes around pretty fast. After all, he's the last person to judge someone for hiding their identity and making shitty decisions.

That's fine. As I said above, people can think whatever they want about it. I just disagree.

*reads a couple pages back*

*reads "something something blackwall was bullying solas"*

Someone's never busted their friend's chops before.

And before someone tells me that "how do you know they are friends," I have something called an imagination and I heard their other banters (you know, context).  They're pretty comfortable around each other (Solas was quite hurt about Blackwall's lie, Blackwall "taught" Solas how to play Diamondback). Blackwall only tends to joke with people he feels comfortable with.  You don't see him making those jokes with Cassandra, for example.

Solas bet the clothes right off of Blackwall and made him do the walk of shame back to the stables with only "a bucket for his bits."  Wouldn't that also qualify as "bullying" in your definition?

I swear to god, this fandom's need to defend characters sometimes gets way out of hand.

No, I have not busted my friends chops. Why would I want to give a friend a hard time, since I assume you are using that version of the phrase rather than the punch them in the face one? Either way, that doesn't sound like something a friend would do to a friend.

Again, I pointed out how that banter didn't match the overall tone the banter was setting for their relationship.

It could, certainly. But since it was a result of gambling, it is harder to call it that since Rainier had to have bet those clothes first for him to lose them.

I have no desire to defend Solas. I was just stating that I didn't like a banter.

I'm pretty much done talking about this banter, lmao, but I had to laugh at this. No I'm not getting frustrated because my pixel husbando's honor was besmirched and now I must dual you!!!! I'm frustrated because your argument is so reductionist and at heart I'm a fussy nerd like Solas who is all BUT ITS MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT.

But like its silly, so I'll drop it and go find my cuddle egg.

Okay. Just throwing out a possible reason you didn't like it. Nothing more than that.

@hanako: At this point, I think it's safe to say this is just an issue of your perception of how friends should behave with friends versus the way most people behave with their friends. You think busting each other's chops is weird/inappropriate, but it's what a lot of people do with their friends - it's a sign of affection as weird as it might seem to you.

Now as for the last part of my post, I'm merely saying that something like the Solas-Blackwall banter or, say, Dorian dispkaying anger and pain with his father (even though he's normally on an even, if snarky, keel most of the time) gives more dimension to the characters. You get to see that they're not perfect and that they have their weaknesses, foibles, etc. like actual people do.

Well if you go by the historical period DAI is around, I think hot tar would would be condom at that time. If you go from a fantasy standpoint Nug Skin.

Ugh mad.

Started making a blackwall girl (and tried to not throw her together so I feel inspired to play all the way through.)

Originally she was like this when I finished

*spoilered for size*

Spoiler

But yay I crashed before the auto save (Yeah I ended up swearing like a sailor.)

So I tried to get her as close as possible? But yeah she ended up looking like this in game

Spoiler
So now I'm pouting. I'm hoping she looks better once we get out of early game lighting but baaaah.

@ryz: Yeeeeah, in the harsh light of in-game lighting...sometimes things end up looking horribly, horribly wrong. Well, it all went really wrong with my first Inquisitor at any rate. She looked like she was wearing clown makeup, which is when I learned my lesson and went pretty minimalist/super subtle with the cosmetics (my current Quizzy has a smoky eye with dark eyeshadow, which turned out to be a good and relatively safe choice, thankfully - lol).

Yeah, I agree with Cat - she looks pretty good overall. And at least you won't have to suffer through eleven hours of way-too-blue eyeshadow like I did before I decided it was too horrible to live with - lol.

I love the face. It looks like a old close friend. I would tone the eye shadow/liner down a little to give a more natural look.

Yeah I think I should give her the skintone on the far right too. The one she has looks too reddish for me in the bright light. Which is a shame because it looks so lovely in the CC -_-

Ryz, she still looks awesome - should have seen the makeup on my first attempt! Should have definitely screen capped it. I always bring the lip shine right down, seems to improve the subtlety in the lipstick.

Nothing beats the feeling of being stalked across social media for having an opposing opinion to a self important youtuber on a video game character.

I need Blackwall fluff now.
