@Atreiya, really love your fic so far. It has some great emotional notes and characterization, but what I find I'm most impressed with was how well you wrote combat! Very rare that I see fic with such well crafted action, it tends to be so internal and abstract (and that's not a hating comment towards fic in general, my own fic absolutely falls into that category hehe) Tbh, I think it was better than what was in the DA novels because it didn't feel "gamey' at all like they did.

@veeia: Thanks! I tried to be true to the characters (or at least my impression of them), and I'm glad that you enjoyed the action. While I do like examining the characters' internal lives and/or motivations, I have to have my action fix - hehe. Maybe the decades I spent watching a bazillion samurai shows has finally come into play as far as handling action scenes go (albeit this is medieval and western-based, with combat playing out a bit differently). Anyway, since It's not an official novel where they presumably have to follow certain rules and directives, I can pretty much do whatever seems most right/realistic as far as the combat goes - whee!

Wrote up a teeny drabble fleshing out some things surrounding Explanations. Again, not edited (I'm like you Atreiya, editing takes me hooooours and half the time with fic I'm just content to go "welp its crap and 99% dialogue but i indulged in ~my emotions~ so wev"  because I'm too impatient ) but posting anyway.

The Fereldan ale has little froth, is a strange translucent yellow, and is so watery that he’ll probably have to drink several tankards to get even a pleasant buzz. He orders another one, ignoring the bartender’s raised eyebrows. There is something comforting about bad beer.

 

Across the tavern,  he hears Hella’s loud laugher. As usual, she sits at a table with Dorian and Dagna. Solas had joined them earlier, likely at Hella’s insistence, and while he had seemed dubious at first, he is now waving his wine glass around animatedly .

 

Two dwarves and two mages go into a bar. It’s like the start of a joke, but everything feels like it’s going to be a joke with Hella at first, and then when you’re not paying attention, something real happens.

 

Solas and Hella are arguing now, half in jest, he can tell, and Dorian puts his arm around Hella in support. She beams up at him, messy red hair falling down to the sides of her face, and Blackwall feels a white flash of jealousy. Ridiculous.  He shot her down. What did he expect, her to follow him around begging? A woman like that? He turns back to his newly refreshed mug of ale.

 

The dwarf is cleaning the counter, and when Blackwall meets his eyes, he sighs and sets the rag down. “If you brood at her any harder, it’s going to be bad for business.”

 

“I’m not brooding at anyone.”

 

“Ha!  Sure you’re not. Part of my very limited skillset is being good at people, but you’re not a challenge at all.  Don’t take it personally, you’re practically my favorite customer, you’re the only one who will drink this nugshit.”

 

He scowls and takes a big swig. “Wish everyone was as easy to read then.”

 

The dwarf snorts. “Our Lady Herald is about as subtle as you. Everyone in this bar thinks they’re a mystery, but you’re all just bad at people.”

 

Blackwall looks back at Hella. She’s listening to Dagna speak, but she notices him, and for just a moment, the sparkling smile on her face falters. Sh*t.

 

“Ah, the glimmer of recognition. Another ale?”

 

“Please.”

When the hurlocks show, Hella throws herself at them with her usual aplomb, and Blackwall panics. What was he thinking, asking her here alone, without any mages to shield her? It’s not like he can actually sense the darkspawn, or did he forget that?

 

He hurls himself at it, sword in hand, taunting it in the hopes he can draw them away from her. They hiss angrily and turn towards him, and he thrusts at them, his sword drawing blood. He can never see Hella in the middle of battle. She moves too quickly, dropping in and out of stealth, whirling her daggers around, moving faster than his eyes can process, but when it’s done, he is relieved to see her standing next to him uninjured, a grin on her face.

 

“Well that was fun! Is that what we’re doing out here? Some kind of Warden bonding ritual?”

 

“No, I...came here with another warden once. He died.”

 

“Oh.” Hella slips her daggers back into their sheaths and then squeezes his hand. “I’m sorry.”

 

He shrugs, his hand still warm from her touch after she pulls away. “His death was ...different. It changed me.”

 

“All deaths change people.”  

 

She says it lightly, but it’s not dismissive. Blackwall opens his mouth to tell her the truth, but then she’s walking up the path more, heading towards the cliff point where the pile of bones are.  A frown, and then she’s kneeling down, picking up something of the ground.

 

“Is this yours?”

 

It’s a Warden badge, in her small hands. How did she find it? After he’d burned the bodies, he had looked for hours.  The leather is wet, and he takes it from her, thumbing the insignia. Blackwall’s badge.

 

“I--.” He doesn’t want to lie, but the truth still won’t come out. “This was my life before I met you.  Crumbling ruins. Endless battles. Death.”  

 

“Sometimes I worry you don’t see me.” She tilts her head, then before he can reply, she’s tugging at the straps of her amor, pulling it off over her head.

 

“Woa, woa, my lady, I don’t know if this is the place--”

 

He stops when her armor is off, realizing what she’s showing him. Her undershirt covers her chest and stomach, but he can see the angry scars on her shoulders, arms, one that cuts across the top of her breasts like a lightning bolt. The body of a woman who has seen more fights than ballrooms. 

 

“Look at me.” she says, gently. “Ruins and death? That was, is my life too.  Two months ago, I was still chasing down lowlife drug addicts for the Carta. Whatever you may have done or seen, you gave your body and life to a higher purpose a long time ago, just as I have now.”

 

He can’t handle this, the esteem she places on him because of his lies, so he focuses on her body, sees that one of the scars is red, angry on her dark skin, and he reaches out a finger to trace it. “This is recent. Did you get it when I --”

 

“You weren’t there.” Hella puts her hand on his. “I went out without you, because I was mad and see, this is why I need you! You protect me, and you inspire me. Tell me to leave if you don’t want me, and I’ll understand. But please, Blackwall. See me.”

 

All his confessions die on his lips.  How can he tell her who he really is, when it might lose him this?

 

“I see you.” He says hoarsely, moving his hand up to her cheek. She smiles up at him, and they are silent for a moment, just looking at eachother. It’s the longest Hella has ever been still, he thinks, and the raw honesty and emotion on her face is  too much for him to bear, so he looks away first. “And I see that you are cold, half naked in the rain, and I have dragged you out here for no reason. We can talk more back at Skyhold.”

 

“No reason?” She laughs and steps back, pulling her coat back on. “I got to be alone with you, and also stab things! No apologies necessary.”

Re: the lines in the game's audio files that indicate Blackwall can dump you if you are romancing him and his approval is too low so he leaves, has anyone managed to trigger that, or is it just a relic from an earlier stage of the game?

 

...I mean most of us probably did not let his approval get that low, but maybe you heard someone else?

@Atreiya, Veeia: Nice work! I needed to read some Blackwall fic tonight as I'm pretty sure I've just encountered the Dorian bug in my current playthrough, meaning that this poor guy:



Probably won't be getting any sweet Dorian lovin' after all. Maker's balls, I don't know if I can be bothered starting over and trudging through the Hinterlands again.
This just makes me even sadder that Blackwall wasn't available to males, too. They could have been great together!

Oh no!!! The Dorian bug is the WORST, especially if you planned on romancing him. (  I have a Dorianmancing character who sided with the mages, and I basically went In Hushed Whispers- BOLT TO SKYHOLD DO NOT TALK TO ANYONE DO NOT PRESS GO DO NOT LOSE THE HOT MAN, and was so relieved when I triggered it. So stressful. Hope you didn't actually get it.

@credulousalloy -- I thought I was getting the Dorian bug in mine, but it finally popped. Seems different people have different problems with it, but mine happened after I'd gotten his venatori quest from the map room (not finishing the whole quest, just the map part finished), and then killed one of the venatori from the quest. I'm not sure if I had to get his approval higher, since I'd been being careful about not getting it tooo high before Skyhold. I also had to ask him one question about his family/himself. After I did those three things and left the castle a couple times and then went back to talk to him, I then finally got the convo about Felix, and the quest popped up.

I believe the way to avoid the possible bug is to not talk to him much or get much approval before Skyhold and then talk to him/get his approval up high enough to trigger it before you do much else at Skyhold, esp talking to Hawke. So it def makes sense you might not get it right away, since you have to boost that approval a bit.

Some people have gotten the quest regardless of whether they did that or not, but most everyone who hasn't gotten it has not done one of those things, so it's your best bet.

Argh, I hope you guys are right and that it'll trigger at some point. The trouble is that I've read so many conflicting reports about what/what not to do that I have no frigging clue anymore. Have to say, between this and the Great Blackwall Dialogue Bug, I'm starting to get a little annoyed - the writers spend so much time and effort crafting these wonderful characters and then people can't experience them properly due to bugs

 

Might just cut my losses and roll an older Cadash to romance Blackwall again - my first quizzy was really young, and though I ended up liking the age difference (and the story of this young idealist having her romantic illusions shattered, then building something truer and stronger from the pieces), I think it'll be really cool to pair him with someone of a similar age who also has stuff in her past she isn't proud of.

Yeah I mean, it's bound to happen and probably most will get (or have already been) fixed , but so many of the bugs are ones that really can hurt a PT, like the Dorian one, or the banter bug, or Hawke Voice switch, or the gender switch bug, or the Cassandra's romance not triggering with a female Quizzie, or....


(the last one is a bug ok ITS A BUG. Game breaking one, tbh )

That sounds fun a fun Cadash PT! Hopefully you'll be okay with Dorian, but if not, at least you can set it aside and wait to see if that's fixed in the next patch, and play that Cadash while you wait. Boo

@Credulous: I think Sabreenei might be right.  His quest has always appeared for me after doing the Venatori one from the war table.  I hope it works out for you!

And today, trying to see if I can rustle up some dough for an art commission from a friend (LOL a reward for me for being fiscally responsible this past year!). You can only guess what it might be

Haha, I have an art comission pending, because I was so set on getting a tarot card for Hella, but then I thought...what if...Blackwall/Hella??? And now I'm just obsessing over exactly what id want.

This worked for me recently. I picked "Corypheus must be stopped" when accepting the Inquisitor role, Dorian greatly approves of that, then talked to him first thing at Skyhold and got a couple small approval bumps. Then Mother Giselle was waiting downstairs to give me his personal quest. Otherwise I can go the whole game and nada.

If anyone gets art done, they have to post and share it! A tarot card sounds intriguing. All the tarot art i've seen so far has been amazing.

 

With Dorian, I was worried I'd been bugged on my Sera playthrough because I forgot about the possible bug and talked (and customized) Hawke before talking to Dorian. After a little bit of back and forth, gaining approval, and reloading from before going to Crestwood, it showed up.

 

On the playthrough for Dorian, I got worried, because I talked to him in Haven and asked him about Alexius there. When we got to Skyhold, after the first initial conversation, nothing would happen. I thought I'd ruined it. I had picked the "Corypheus must be stopped" option, but I think because I'd conscripted the mages instead of allying with them (trying something new this time!) I had farther to go to increase my approval. Still, it wouldn't pop until I'd asked him about his parents. Maybe because Mother Giselle has a line in there about you having talked to his parents? Or maybe it's just wonky!

 

@Atreiya -- I finally got AO3 to load! I was working, and thought I'd just check and read a little if it worked, but instead I decided to read the whole thing from start to finish (even though I'd read chapter 1 previously), because it was so good.
