Am I the ONLY one who thinks Blackwall looks much like thorin from the live-action hobbit movies with the excess hair from his beard removed?

 

No, I totally agree!  I think he looks a lot like Richard Armitage in BBC's Robin Hood.

It does not seem odd to me at all! I mean, I will play cishet relationships fine with a female PC but I can't muster up the desire for Cass even though Cass. Dreamy sigh, ideal woman.

Also, I'm really enjoying my current playthrough as a Cadash Inquisitor.

He and Blackwall are basically kindred spirits since Cadash is literally a criminal as a Carta member. I RP him as having a past that is quite dark, and he's even murdered people. (He really knocked Josephine's socks off when she asked him about his past).

 

I haven't gotten to Blackwall's reveal yet, but when I do, my Inquisitor is going to totally get what Blackwall is going through, since he himself has done some terrible things in the past, but they are both trying to put that behind them and are saving the world. That's awesome.

lmao SOOO I found his hair texture file! It's confusing, because the texture files for hair do not have any color in them, so I assume the game renders that and...well, right now I have no idea how I could change that or? But I decided to play around with anyway, because why not. 

 

And so I made a bad texture with a little grey in it and threw it on and was like TADA! okay, not the greatest but a start!

 

then had to pee and I came back and I have no idea how??? But my cat sat on my computer and 3DSmax was acting all weird (I know very little about the program lmfao, cat just obviously changed the material/mesh somhow) so I was like "huh gonna render this and see what it looks like."

 

And this happened???

@veeia - I scared my cats by laughing at that.  They are lazy loafabouts, and need to start doing some modding for me! (also awesome work just finding those to open and work on!!)

 

I primarily stay in this thread. Sometimes I'll skulk about in other threads, but anything negative and I'm usually out. I like reading the modding group thread, and sometimes I go peruse people's character creations -- those are both primarily safe places.  Also been lurking around the Dorian thread, because Dorian! I haven't gotten to play today, but I think last night I took about 300 screenshots of my IQ and Dorian while replaying their smexy scenes. Then I went back to the save before it happened and am now saving it to happen later. Because I am a crazy woman.

 

I had a banter happen last night that I'd never heard before too. I wish I'd screenshotted it! Dorian and Blackwall were bickering back and forth, and my IQ got an interject option. I was so surprised, I can't even remember what the three options were. But I chose the middle sarcastic option, and Blackwall apologized for not playing nice. It was cute. Directly after that they had a conversation where they were actually getting along, and it made me laugh.

 

re: tumblr. I haven't been on much of late, but if you see 'thepirateandtheswan' following you, that's me! My main fandom on tumblr was "Once Upon a Time" for Hook & Emma, though really it's a hodge podge of randomness. I have a side blog that was supposed to be for my game stuff, so you might see me reblogging from 'when-daydreams-collide' too.

Okay, this isn't Blackwall-related exactly, but...I started watching a mystery called Grantchester on PBS (because I always watch Masterpiece Mystery and/or Downton Abbey!). Anyway, I took Blackwall, Cole, and Cassandra to Chateau d'Onterre. They all start talking about the creepy stuff going on, and when Cole started speaking, well, it was exactly when the main character (a vicar) was speaking on the show.

 

Right then I was thinking, wow, this guy sounds exactly like Cole...how totally weird...couldn't be him, could it? So I proceed to check IMDB and found out that the main character is, in fact, played by James Norton who did voice Cole in the game. I proceeded to laugh my butt off and am now uncertain if I can watch the rest of the series without expecting the vicar to put on a funny hat and start wielding daggers.

 

Right, did get Blackwall some reasonably nice gold-colored armor with a cloak that dropped off a dragon. I was actually taking screenshots before I headed for the chateau and then got distracted by this whole Cole thing, hehe.

... Wait. So we've determined that Blackwall climbed up to the Inquisitor's room? You guys are saying... that he scaled the wall... so you can Scale the Wall? THAT IS EPIC. 

 

Falling in love with the Inquisitor: I kind of pictured it as something that just goes over time. I actually had a funny accident in the Storm Coast where I ran up and picked some plant by the water. As soon as Cadash bent over, it popped up "Blackwall Slightly Approves" which I thought was hilarious. I know in reality what PROBABLY happened is that a darkspawn got killed nearby, but I liked the thought a lot of better of him noticing things about her. Something happened largely through their adventuring together, and that he realized it sometime before the "I am Batman" scene. That would explain why he wanted her to break it off so badly; it seemed to me that it had gotten to a point where he cared about her so much that he knew that he'd only end up hurting her. My Inquisitor was actually a little terrible to him after Revelations; in prison when he said "You loved a lie" she told him she didn't love him. She left with her head held high, got out of town, and promptly cried on Dorian's shoulder because she knew she'd just lashed out because she was hurt and pissed and just didn't think about it. (Dorian must suppress so many facepalms, I can't even...!)

 

In my head canon, I think that they had to spend some time getting to know each other all over again in some ways. Cadash, too, hides a lot; having been a lyrium smugger and seen allll kinds of things in regards to lyrium, she pretty much pegged poor Cullen early on, and felt absolutely horrible that she enabled an awful lot of lyrium abuse over the years. Before, an addict in withdrawal could be a potential client. Now, that's a friend, and it's horrible. She tells herself that she never would have touched red lyrium... but she knows deep down that the person she used to be very well have done what it took to make a profit. These aren't things she's shared. They both had to open up a bit, and realize that both of them had a picture of the other that wasn't accurate. Sometimes it takes time to break down the walls (har har); as someone who has suffered from depression my whole life, a crap sense of self worth in the past, and growing up in an abusive situation, and went on to have one of the greatest marriages of anyone I know, I kinda get that. It took a long time to learn how to be me. But when a person can leave that all behind and move forward with another person, it makes that victory all the sweeter, and the love all the greater.

 

But that's just my take on it. My slightly sleep deprived take, I should already be asleep (not like I can sleep with my husband playing Mass Effect 3 FINALLY and making a whole bunch of noise, hah, I will finally get to talk about the game with him after all this time). 

 

I swear I gotta write some fic or work on my Cadash blog or something. When I'm awake. Which is not right now.

You're spot on with how the hair color works. There's a mesh, a texture, and then a color is applied. This is likely why there's no gray in his hair currently, since it would have required some custom work. Offhand, it seems like the way to go is to create a new texture, color it as appropriate, point to it instead of the existing one, and remove anything that tries to force it to color itself. However, that's still past what I've figured out so far. I can see how the colors kinda work in terms of how it's set, but still shaky on the details. Grar. 

 

I managed to extract everything; I can get you anything you need if you want to take a crack at things more. Two heads are better than one! What's mainly getting me at this point is that I don't know how the texture lays on there, so I'm thinking I'd have to put some sort of little markers on it and apply it so I can see what's laying where as a start. Something like that. I haven't managed to get the texture to apply to the mesh, so you're waaaaay ahead of me on that.

 

OK SHOWER AND SLEEP NOW. If I were a follower in DAI, Dorian would be complaining about me needing to make nice with the shampoo I'm sure.

Hello Blackwall thread! With the advent of the beard-removable mod, I am now finally capable of moving forward with my Blackwall romance! (I have no real problem with beards, just his reminds me of my uncle-in-laws. Like the only similarity was the shape.. but it was enough to be off putting.)

I've not actually progressed with the story past Skyhold, so I don't actually know what most of the armor looks like? I only looked up the elf ones. (I keep remaking. So I spoiled myself on most everything, didn't need a repeat of ME3's ending.)

One thing I can't find too readily is pictures of armor on Blackwall. I was wondering what you guys thought was the best looking armor for him?

Heya, welcome to the thread! I very much like him in the Warden armor, as well as the heavy Orlesian set that you can buy in Val Royeaux (across from the cafe and up the stairs). Anything that accentuates his shoulders makes me happy. I'll try and get you some screenshots later.

Ah, another reason to check Spooks out then! Yeah, I think this all dates back to my very early exposure to Monty Python. Apparently, even at a young age, I was something of an Anglophile with a predilection for clever, if unorthodox, humor. I am also a sucker for British mysteries in particular - lol. God, I loooooved Luther (and of course, Indira Varma was in it - I'm probably in the minority in sort of liking Vivienne because of certain shared personality traits, btw - hehe).

Now if you want to see some totally ridiculous outfits for the lulz, veeia has a lot of amazing screenshots of Blackwall in things like plaideweave armor (which is sublimely silly - especially that one pic with Blackwall and Solas both wearing plaideweave outfits).
