@hanako: Great, and maybe you can go around to other character threads and start accusing all the other characters who ever directly killed innocents and/or who were indirectly responsible for the deaths of innocents of being mass murderers, child killers, plain old murderers, perpetrators of manslaughter, or of being general malcontents? Why don't we go down the list of just a few DA characters/companions/advisors who killed other people!
- Josephine killed as a bard - but I'm sure you can excuse that away as self-defense and keep her purity intact.
- The fact is that she wanted to play at being a bard because it sounded oh-so-exciting and ended up killing some guy she knew because of what amounted to a completely silly whim on her end.
- She romanticized what being a bard would be like when she should have stayed in school and stuck to her studies.
- How many people did Zevran - an Antivan Crow who assassinated people for a living - kill who were innocent?
- Did he ever seem to care? Because in his lengthy career, I don't think he cared all that much about who he killed for the most part.
- It's not like you hear him repeatedly expressing regret for every assassination that he ever performed in DA:O.
- It was largely (with at least one or two exceptions I believe) kind of romanticized through his entertaining stories.
- And let's not forget that mission #1 for Zevran in DA:O was to kill your character.
- Sten killed a family - with children - accidental deaths due to his panicking over his lost sword.
- People still accuse him of being a murderer/monster (and it comes up in DA:O, not just old threads about Sten).
- I don't care if you don't like the analogy, because in both his case and Rainier's case, the deaths of the children were unintentional.
- I, personally, thought there were mitigating factors in Sten's case - like the fact that it was the result of panic and was not intentional.
- Additionally, Sten was clearly repentant about his actions and wanted to take the blame for his actions. Hmm, someone who's repentant for killing others and ultimately wants to take responsibility for what they did? Who does that sound like?
- Sten was one of my favorite characters, and I didn't particularly care what other people accused him of. I did occasionally point out that he didn't meant to do it at all and wasn't some sort of remorseless monster because he clearly felt a lot of guilt about it (despite how stoic he is in general).
- As for our dearly beloved Leliana who must have been responsible for an awful lot of deaths during her careers as bard and spymaster...
- Ever wonder how many people Marjolaine ordered her to kill before we even get to DA:O proper? How many of them were probably innocent? Marjolaine clearly wasn't a very nice person - nor was she trustworthy.
- And just how many people has she killed for Divine Justinia? I mean, sure, you could say it was all necessary and try to excuse away everything that she ever did, but I'm sure that not every person she killed could be considered a righteous kill.
- And if you want to use Leliana's crime in that alternate future reality against her, then I'm sure you can accuse her of cold-blooded murder when she kills Felix of all people - Felix who was totally innocent of any crimes and who was actually a very nice guy.
- That's not even counting what happens to Natalie if you don't soften Leliana and she just goes and kills her against your wishes (and if you decide to kill Natalie and tell Leliana to do it, then guess who else has blood on their hands).
- Anders blew up a Chantry - enough said there.
- Velanna went on a vengeful killing spree aimed at humans.
- It wasn't even justifiable because the humans weren't responsible for the deaths of her little elf friends - it was the darkspawn that did it.
- What does that make her for being tricked into killing?
- And arguably, as much as I like Solas, you can just point at him and the fact that he gave the focus to Corypheus as an action that directly resulted in hundreds of deaths at the Conclave alone.
- Again, Solas is someone that I am partial to - and despite any questionable actions that he took, I find him interesting and don't feel any compunction to endlessly harp on his culpability in the events of DA:I.
There's plenty of blood on plenty of people's hands for various reasons. You just seem to have this incredibly huge problem with Rainier taking blood money for an assassination, but as I pointed out earlier, it's not really any different from anything that Zevran ever did. And if you consider that Velanna was tricked into killing people who were innocent of any crime, then that's not entirely dissimilar to Rainier (probably) being tricked into taking out Callier's entire family.
I also find this new thing with you stating that Rainier joined the Inquisition to wash blood off his hands to be laughable, but everyone else seems to have already made some decent refutations of this statement already. I'm just going to say that his joining the Inquisiton appeared to be selfess and that I agree with the others about his motivation appearing to be a desire to help the
real Wardens by finding out what the heck was going on and doing what he could to right things. But hey, you keep beating that "mass murderer and child killer" war drum of yours!
