Bah I really wish my cousin would finish his current run so he can get to the Blackwall romance (He's going to try them all) that way I can have someone to do a more continuous back and forth with on Blackwall. The waiting is the hardest part right now.

Oh he's already excited for Blackwall, in fact it was the first thing he wanted to talk about with me last time we saw each other but he's doing a 'complete everything' run at the moment so it is taking forever ![]()

@xety: You never know - you could always give it a whirl! Besides, I doubt that anyone will be particularly judgmental. The way I see it, you're probably still light years ahead of some of the authors that I've been stuck with (I formatted some manuscripts last week that were real howlers).
Agreed! I mean if it's too frustrating and not enjoyable, that's one thing, or the idea is too anxiety making, of course do what's comfortable! But I would enjoy reading it.
Some of the best fic I've read has been by people who weren't native English speakers, and not because they were creepily and obnoxiously talented in their second language like some Nabokov level stuff, but because their passion for and understanding of the characters transcended any awkward sentence structures or switched words.
(and yeah, it's not like native English speakers are always the best at putting words together, lmao. I'm sure not)

@veeia: The majority of people that I get are, sadly, native speakers of English...which just goes to show that having English as a first language is no guarantee that a person actually has any clue about how to write well.

I don't know. I've already had my puncts and grammar critisized on bsn. Writing for a fandom would be daunting.

I say go for it.
Even if a person isn't a native English speaker, if their speech is enough to convey their message across then they're able to speak two languages -- which is more then can be said for most native English speaking people.
@Atreiya, what was so bad about the particular things you read over if I might ask? Obviously you can't disclose what they wrote, but just in general what made it a stinker?

@xety: Maybe try using a friend as a proofreader/beta reader then? I am admittedly pretty hardcore about punctuation and grammar because of my job, but I usually manage to keep that separate from fun, less formal stuff here. I do obsessively edit my posts for typos and whatnot, but that's because seeing my own errors just drives me up the wall; I hate it when I let my own mistakes slip past me - lol.

You at least did not call on my crappy english even when we are constantly banging our heads together. And I thank you for that :')

Basically, the guy used "climatic" instead of "climactic" when a certain character was in the throes of passion. Because he was obviously talking about sex, not weather-related phenomena, this was particularly funny to me. If you want a short sample, I can PM a small part of it after I get on my computer in the morning (but you have to have a fairly high tolerance for not-hot sex scenes with lots of typos).
In general, he completely failed at properly separating all his dialogue and had what I considered to be awkward/poor writing (and bad organizational skills to boot). I had to work on his A title originally. His B title is actually a revised (but still crappy) edition of his A title, and his C title (got stuck with that as well) is the actual sequel to that first novel that I had to work on.

So I finished my drawing. Reasonably pleased. I realised today that's its been over 2 years since I did a portrait. Digital fixing the clothes mucked up his beardy bit, stoopid clothes. Should have just drawn him naked, would have been much easier.

And lol, yes you should totally draw him naked next time. For science obviously. We need to keep examine his anatomy! xD

@Bugsie - his hair needs a bit more work, but otherwise looking nice, especially his face ![]()
argh, the downside to being a Blackwall fan is the lack of fanfiction
I have some finished and in-progress stuff on ff.net... We could test that thing about not native English speakers writing fics.

Guys, just to confirm we do find out about Blackwall's past in a romance, correct?
Normally I've had the bar talk by the time I've found his 4th memento set. Or do I need to advance to the Abyss?

People who attack other people over their grammar on internet forums are the worst, tbh.
It's prettty Anglocentric, because yeah, not everyone has English as a first language. And even when people do, this idea that you have to communicate in a certain "proper" way to enter a dialogue about fictional dragons, lol. Language gatekeeping is always ridiculous, but especially when you're talking about fictional characters, like bro, you know what they meant. Or if you don't, you can ask politely. It also is never relevant to the discussion at hand and is usually someone trying to score cheap points like "oh crap you just totally owned me i have no real response to this oh wait I see a grammatical error here lets highlight that because there's nothing else to pick apart LOL WOW LEARN ENGLISH"
Just trust me when I tell you that someone who is attacking your English probably is making like 5 grammatical errors themselves in their posts because a) English is a bad of wriggling cats and
people who are that pedantic and awful usually don't even know what they're talking about. And if they're not making mistakes like that, they're still a sad, sad person.

@captivating: Just make sure that you don't ask him every single question about himself before you get Revelations. Otherwise, that bug will keep the questions you should be able to ask him after the judgment from showing. If you have already asked him everything...oops - heh.
Oh...whoops.

@veeia: I must confess that I will sometimes crucify someone over their writing and pick apart their grammar, etc. - but that's only if they're an obvious troll, someone that I completely loathe, or an obnoxious douchebag who mocks others for their errors and declares that they have superior writing skills. If someone is going to call others out for their grammar/punctuation and they mess up...yeah, I MIGHT just decide to point out some of their own flaws - lol.
I love it when people call out someone's grammatical errors and end up making more themselves in the process and get schooled, it's so delicious.
I could never do that, because I would make errors in my callout of their callout but I love it when people like you do it.
i am a prime example of a native English speaker who is often not coherent and I even have a writing degree
(KIDDING I even have a grammar pedantic friend do a grammar/punctuation pass for me before I send anything out bcuz me/comma abuse is a ship that will never sink)

@captivating: Well, there's always veeia's video (she got to ask the questions and recorded it for those of us who got the bug). You can watch that after you do the judgment!
But it's not the saaaame.
I have disdain for watching dialogue videos because it's not my character. Lol, I'm so picky. ;p
I'm sure Vee made an awesome vid, but my Abaeni is just standing off in the corner pouting.

Short note for now since I'm in jury duty today on break (whee) but: I'm willing to help beta if needed. While I got nothin' on Atreiya by a long shot
I used to do editing for fan publications, super non-fancy but I am happy to help people if they need someone to give it a look. I don't have a ton of time, but I'm happy to do what I can; I spend so much time reading fic anyway, I may as well use some of that time helping people write more of it. ![]()
