People who attack other people over their grammar on internet forums are the worst, tbh.

It's prettty Anglocentric, because yeah, not everyone has English as a first language. And even when people do, this idea that you have to communicate in a certain "proper" way to enter a dialogue about fictional dragons, lol. Language gatekeeping is always ridiculous, but especially when you're talking about fictional characters, like bro, you know what they meant. Or if you don't, you can ask politely.  It also is never relevant to the discussion at hand and is usually someone trying to score cheap points like "oh crap you just totally owned me i have no real response to this oh wait I see a grammatical error here lets highlight that because there's nothing else to pick apart LOL WOW LEARN ENGLISH"

Just trust me when I tell you that someone who is attacking your English probably is making like 5 grammatical errors themselves in their posts because a) English is a bad of wriggling cats and B) people who are that pedantic and awful usually don't even know what they're talking about. And if they're not making mistakes like that, they're still a sad, sad person.

Heh, didn't bother me much though. My big mouth and being opinionated made up for the lack of grammar. I got my point across, just in a broken sort of way :-)

I work with people from all over so I'm pretty good with working it out, but it's my experience that people are generally better with English than they THINK they are. :D

@captivating: Yeah, I'd rather be able to ask him the questions myself in my game, but that ship sailed over 80 hours ago on my second playthrough - lol. I'll be sure to get it on my third playthrough (if I mess up, I'll just go cry into Blackwall's beard or kiss him in the barn). But I'm getting ahead of myself - it's almost time to head for the Arbor Wilds on my second run, hehe.

It's harder to be taken seriously when you make mistakes due to your not being anglophone, you struggle a lot and in the end your words result watered down if not unintentionally humorous  :pinched:

I keep trying but I learned English by myself so I keep making a lot of mistakes no matter how hard I try  :( There are so many things I'd like to write but it would require an immense effort and a lot of time and knowledge I sadly lack.  Sorry Blackwall, I wish I could do more for you -.-

Is anyone else annoyed by the Inquisitor's leaving remarks to Blackwall?

"Nothing now, perhaps in a bit" only works for like an 8th of scenarios! When he's silent it just sounds so ridiculous.

I don't know if this has been pointed out, but there is a letter about thom rainier you can find in the exalted plains. It's even more ironic if he is romanced and in the party

So much foreshadowing in this game about him....it hurts :D

I still love poking him during Explanations. "You mean your badge." Like c'mon, man. I need to remember your own cover story for you? :P

I picked up that letter hoping maybe something would be said by someone... but no. I imagined in my head that Blackwall was squirming a little and drawing attention elsewhere. ;)

I know   I'm so torn between that and the middle option in which you are oblivious (it makes quizzie being shocked at the revelation more believable, imo)

I'm looking so forward to it. This playthrough is purely for the drama-mance.

Short note for now since I'm in jury duty today on break (whee) but: I'm willing to help beta if needed. While I got nothin' on Atreiya by a long shot ;) I used to do editing for fan publications, super non-fancy but I am happy to help people if they need someone to give it a look. I don't have a ton of time, but I'm happy to do what I can; I spend so much time reading fic anyway, I may as well use some of that time helping people write more of it. :D

Some time ago I wrote a one shot but my beta had not even started playing the game yet so she couldn't help me because huge spoilers.

I asked for help on tumblr but no one replied. I published the story nonetheless but I know it's almost unreadable so if you wish to help me it would be much appreciated

I just restarted my BW romance PT from before exhausting all the dialogue options in haven, to get the dialogue after the personal quest. I've never been a big fan of dramatic romances personally.

That just gave me the funniest mental picture  :

IQ*focused on the letter*Hmm, who is Thom Rainier?

BW*nervously*Isn't there a pile of corpses we have to set on fire?

@cathy: Yeah, I remember looking through my codex and landing on that particular letter at one point. At the time I was all "Whoa, I had THIS all the time? Where the heck did I get it?!" Started paying a lot more attention to everything on my second run, hehe.

I'm still semi-convinced that Maliphant's journal entry about "Gordian" was actually about Blackwall who may have borrowed the real Gordian's name for a period of time (as I later learned in here, the real Gordian is an ice mage that you can kill in the Exalted Plains). That line in the journal entry sounded so weirdly like something that Blackwall would say. And honestly, the more I think about it, the less likely it seems to me that that mage would dispense advice that sounds like it's coming from a war-weary soldier who's been fighting for a really long time (also, the specific mention of the guy's Marcher accent seemed like an odd thing for Malipant to make note of in his journal entry).

I'm just gonna go ahead and look like a complete idiot, but who is Maliphant? I usually do side quests and I can't remember that name(or maybe I just have that bad of a memory which is already exhausted from all the finals and the job)

@Cathy: Oh, Maliphant is one of the Freemen leaders you have to kill in the Emerald Graves - just look around the villa, and the journal's lying around there somewhere. Don't know if you've been to the Emerald Graves or done all of that yet, heh.

Thanks. I finished the game 3 times but i usually get bored after doing Adamant, so I don't explore the higher lvl regions as well as, say, the hinterlands and the exalted plains, so I missed that villa altogether

I swear Senseandaccountability's (on tumblr) Blackwall ficlets are killing me. They are sooooo deliciously good!

There was one on my dash this morning about the young Thom Rainier at the grand tourney. Made the idea of my first day back at work after extended leave not feel so bad!!

And Xetykins I have several friends who don't have English as a first language and write fiction - go for it!!

Overall I am impressed at non native English speakers grasp of the language. Far better than my sorry attempts at a second language.

@xety: That's an actual weapon that you can craft - you need those Sad Splinters from bashing in the doors of the keeps that you can conquer, though.

Ah, well I took a screenshot of the relevant portion of the his journal and can now plop it right here for you:

I guess in Orlais mages could be allowed to fight, given the existence of battlemage armor - which means that it could be about the real Gordian who we encounter in the Exalted Plains...still seems a bit odd to me, though.

OMG Atreiya, nice catch! It seems so obvious now. To my mind, it's either about Rainier, or it's another example of Bioware's tendency to latch on to certain phrases and kind of recycle them. I prefer the former, of course. I love that if he did assume Gordian's name at some point, it just casts more shadows on his past, makes his narrative thornier, one that can't simply be wrapped up by the "love of a good woman."

tl;dr: headcanon accepted!

@cat: I figure that if it really was Rainier instead of the ice mage being mentioned in the journal (and this is pure supposition), then it may have predated the time when he met the real Blackwall but still had to hide. Who knows, though - I just don't think that some psycho mage who attacks you on sight is the kind of guy who would say something like that (unless the actual Gordian really went off the deep end within the past couple of years). And yeah, it could absolutely just be nothing more than a variation on a theme where BioWare is emphasizing a particular idea/thought on a topic.
