This is a nice thread and the only reason why I returned on BSN
The other thread would be a nice play to discuss too, I have agreed to disagree with some people who thinks differently from me and we discussed in a most polite way. Sadly it's just overloaded with the same crap from the same you-know-who, but I read a lot of interesting posts too.
What I can't stand are the people who throw judgements without knowing what they are talking about. I've never been in a situation like Rainier's and on the other hand I never saved one single human life, just some dogs from the kennel. That's why I would never judge someone for their actions, I have no idea how I would behave in their same situation. I like to think that I would be a better person than Rainier, but I can't be sure. So, I don't judge.
Second, I've never lived a life of self-sacrifice to help people, that's why I don't feel like I'm in a position to judge a man who does it, despite everything he might have done in the past. To my eyes, someone who dedicates his life to save people, simply shines.
There's a line from Varric in the game, a banter in which he talks with Blackwall about the fact that people are uncomfortable with their presence (you can often hear comments like 'we want no trouble here' coming from commoners in many places). Varric says that the 'creepy people' like them exist in order to do the dirty job so that the 'good' people can stay at home minding their own business. It fits so much imho.
I love Loghain a lot too, and Duncan in the Calling simply shines
