Name: Kiara Trevelyan
Age: 35-38, haven't quite pinpointed it yet
Race: Human, Free Marcher, Noble
Attitude: She covers fear and uncertainty with humor, and has a sarcastic mouth that gets her into trouble. That said, she's also very caring and a great listener, though she tries to hide that under humor. She genuinely tries to do the right thing, even when that right thing gets her in trouble. Rebellious nature.
Theme song: "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" - Pat Benetar (attitude for being the herald).
For Blackwall, especially after the reveal: "I Didn't Want to Need You" - Heart. "I'll Melt With You" - Modern English. "You Mean Everything to Me" - Shawn Mullins. Pre-Conclave bad choices Kiara: "Hold On" - Jet
Backstory (some of this I used when describing when Kiara and Blackwall fell in love):
Kiara may be a noble, but she has lived a good part of her life outside her family’s influence, living under her own assumed name as a rogue and thief. (This was before I even knew there was a Blackwall, so, these two were totally meant to be!).
As a child her best friend and first love became a mage. They’d tried to keep it a secret, but it wasn’t something that could be hidden for long. At the height of their crazy mad us-against-the-world love that only those just out of childhood can sustain he was taken away to a circle. It turned her against her family and the chantry as a whole, since she blamed them for it.
Kiara knew better than to use her own name, and created a separate persona to sneak into the underbelly of the city. She learned rogue skills at first as a way to try and break her love out of the circle. This did not go as planned. From there she made disastrous choices, first to get back at the family and then later because that was the lifestyle she’d gotten herself into.
She began to use her connections and noble knowledge to steal, telling herself she was doing it for a noble purpose. That those she stole from didn't need it, and she was giving it to those who did. It was a slippery line, living a dual life. Her first kill sent her home for a time, but it was no use. She didn't fit in that world anymore, and she found she missed the high of the fight. The adrenaline of putting her life on the line and out maneuvering the enemy became addictive.
Her family gave up on trying to marry her off, afraid she might slip away on her suitor as they she did on them. They tried to punish her or lock her up a time or two, but it only improved her roguish skills. Since Kiara was careful to keep the gossip down and no word (since the bad time with the circle) got out to the general public, her family stopped trying, afraid of pushing the scandal to an open field. Her eldest siblings were sympathetic to her, which also helped quite a bit with the family. The siblings closer to her in age weren't as happy, but the eldest had more pull.
Her lack of husband did not mean she lacked for lovers, both noble and not so noble. She had a particularly long relationship with another rogue, the one that typically sold her goods off. When this last affair took a heartbreaking turn both personally and professionally, she decided to stop straddling two worlds and return home for good. It was time to make amends with her family, give up on the idea of love, and use everything she’d learned for the betterment of her family. She still was no great believer in the system or the circles, but she no longer saw things in such black and white terms. Her world had become grey.
How they came to the Inquisition:
Kiara volunteered to go the the conclave. The rebellion hit her personally. She wasn't sure what happened to her childhood love, or any of the templars she'd befriended in trying to reach him. She wanted information. Her family also wanted information -- any information that could further their position socially and politically. They also were wary of violence breaking out, with so many mages in one place. They had high stakes in the chantry, but as such they felt rebel mages would not hold any love for them. They would not risk an elder child.
Kiara had been at home for a couple years now, and had proven herself as an asset more than once. As she seemed particularly skilled in learning secrets, her family agreed she would be uniquely qualified to be their representative. They also had no qualms about her safety.
How do they feel about the Inquisition and/or leading the Inquisition & Religious Views:
Kiara has had mixed feelings about the Chantry & the Maker for some time. At first she adamantly disagrees she could be sent by Andraste, but the longer it goes on, the more her lack of faith wavers. She loves being able to do something tangible that is good for the people, in closing the rifts. It takes her back to what she thought to accomplish when she was young and idealistic. She often backslides into making smart aleck remarks about it all, to cover any resurging feels of religion.
At the beginning she wonders what Cassandra & Leliana's angle is in all of this. The more she sees of their faith, the more she believes in the good of the Inquisition. She's slightly afraid of power, since she has had a thing against people in power for so long. But the trust her companions have in her was surprising, and helped give her faith in herself. She's never had a problem saying what she thought was right, but she wasn't used to it making a difference. Tired of following people that let her down, and bolstered by her companions, she has no trouble stepping up to lead.
Favorite Zone: The Hinterlands, as she feels she does the most good there, and Hissing Wastes for it's strange beauty. But really, she enjoys it all. She just takes delight in doing things.
Companion they get along with most: Dorian (well, and Blackwall, obviously). After the bit in the future that was not to be with Dorian, they were pretty inseparable. They spent half the time in that horrible future seeing who could out-sarcastic the other, but each realizing the bravado the sassiness truly was. I'm sure Blackwall roles his eyes, because Dorian is her best friend forever and they share everything. In fact, it would be a close thing if she had to prioritize one over the other!
Companion they get along with least: Though she gets along with everyone, Vivianne and Solas don't always see eye to eye with her decisions.
Love Interest: Blackwall
Reason for choosing that love interest: The beard! No, but really, he made her trust herself again, gave her support when she was doubting, made her feel giddy and breathless when flirting, and she just felt an instant connection to him. Completely in love with him, for better or for worse. Though she's not sure about the whole marriage thing, she pretty much feels like that's it, they are each other's forever.
How did they handle Revelations: Kiara always knew Blackwall was hiding something from her. At first she suspected it was something in his past before he was a grey warden. Something very serious -- murder did cross her mind. As time went on, learning facts here and there, she suspected he wasn't actually a Grey Warden. This didn't shock her as much as one might expect, perhaps because of her past in creating a different persona. All she really was concerned with was if what he did and who he was now, was a truth or a lie. The past didn't matter so much to her. Still, it was a shock. What hurt her most was the fact he left without confiding in her. It felt as if he didn't trust her with his burdens, even though she always trusted him with hers. Although, she realized that while she'd told Dorian all her sordid details about her past and lovers and dual life, she hadn't really told Blackwall any of that.
After the drama of the jail cell and the judgment, they had a good long talk and agreed to share their problems, instead of trying to go it alone.
Their greatest flaw: So many flaws! Being way too rebellious, sometimes just to be rebellious. Being a sarcastic ahole. Thinking she knows what is right all the time and getting too defensive. Making judgments based on emotion, but thinking she is being completely logical. Making fun of everything and pretending that none of it really matters anyway, because of course, nothing could ever hurt her. Being too serious about some things and being all too flippant about others, and always in the wrong way. Being a little too addicted to her knives and the rush of a fight.
What did they do after things settled down: She has no idea. How do you settle down? Made Blackwall move into her quarters. Made some eggs. Had a lot of late night talks with Dorian, while Blackwall snored.
