Backstory: Aylasha is the youngest of her once close-knit family, and started out as a plain, shy and quiet lass, content to watch her four older brothers fight for attention and supremacy in their typically boisterous ways – despite what you might think, this was all by and large done good-naturedly (but on rare occasions, not so good-naturedly!). Her brothers would occasionally involve her in their sparring sessions – eventually noticing how quick and lithe she was, and how quickly she could make decisions mid-fight and turn the situation to her advantage. She showed strong natural promise with a dual-dagger fighting style, owing to her speed and skill.
17 years of age heralded an unhappy change however. She and her youngest brother (aged 22 at the time) broke away, following a cocky, slow-building desire for recognition, and chose to rebel, leaving their comfortable family existence behind. Together with several like-minded individuals met along the way, stealing and other petty crimes sadly became commonplace. Indeed, there is a lot that happened at this period in her life that she will not discuss. Despite this heady lifestyle, Aylasha always felt something whispering away at the back of her mind – a whisper that grew to a shout when a job went wrong and her brother was killed. At age 25, she took a long hard look at the direction her life had taken and returned to face her family. Acceptance and forgiveness was understandably scarce to non-existent at first, but she slowly earned back her place and her family’s trust. Since that time, she has been constantly wondering: “What on earth was I thinking??”.
How they came to the Inquisition: Having been accepted back into her family, and proving herself to be changed, she was chosen by her elders to attend the Conclave, mostly to satisfy their curiosity, and to put forward their concerns.
How do they feel about the Inquisition and/or leading the Inquisition? She was terrified at first, but with the support of the good people of the Inquisition around her she has grown into the role very well, and is truly a different person from her early life.
Favorite Zone: Emerald Graves or Emprise Du Lion. Hissing Wastes is a close third!
Companion they get along with most: Dorian – ever since she met the sassy mage during the harrowing events at Redcliffe, she knew that here was someone with whom she would forge a firm friendship for life. “There is no-one I’d rather be stranded in time with” – never has a truer word been spoken! Additionally, she has bonded with Sera – at first they didn’t really understand each other, so this now strong friendship between the two women has been more of a slow burn, developing more slowly but just as strong as any other.
Companion they get along with least: She does get on well with everyone, however she and Vivienne tend to clash over their beliefs concerning mage freedom and the future of the Circles and the Chantry.
Love Interest: Blackwall
Reason for choosing that love interest: She felt an instant attraction from the moment they met in the Hinterlands (and Blackwall has since told her that it was exactly the same for him!). She was intrigued by his confidence in giving back exactly what he got in their early flirtations, and things developed from there. She always sensed that this brooding man had a dark past that he wasn’t yet ready to admit, and thus she felt drawn to him because of her own past experiences. She also wasn’t used to the quiet, tender reverence this seemingly gruff, direct man treated her with. They were probably pretty deeply in love by the time of ‘Explanations’, having spent almost every day of the past 2 and a half months in each other’s company.
How did they handle Revelations: Somewhat amusingly, this is not actually the first time she has woken up naked, cold and alone in a barn. But she thought those days were long since over, having turned things around as she has. Finding the note tacked to the half-finished wooden griffon downstairs was terrible and upon receiving Leliana’s intelligence, she immediately travelled to Val Royeaux with Dorian and Sera. Talking to him in the prison there was painful beyond measure, but she knew she had to get him back to Skyhold – this she achieved using long dormant underworld connections. She forgave him pretty instantly, not being ready to let him go, and understanding wanting to atone for the sins of your past.
Religious Views: Fairly ambivalent really, but she tends to have a similar belief system to Varric – Andrastian, but quietly Andrastian.
Their greatest flaw: Worrying too much about what everyone thinks of her and her decisions
What did they do after things settled down: Despite the homely appeal of Blackwall’s half-humorous suggestion of a house and a dog, she recognises that staying with the Inquisition is what they have to do for now. Her latest triumph has been persuading him to give up living in the stable barn and join her in her quarters, where they can wake up in each other’s arms every morning.
