Edit: I don't think you need to take every single flirt with him during the Haven portion of the game (I didn't flirt with him during Lone Warden), but you probably need to flirt with him at least once before doing "In Your Heart Shall Burn" or the flirt will disappear from the Skyhold rampart part. The Skyhold flirt is mandatory. =/
I head canon that it happened differently in the real story (i.e. my headcanon), and the game mechanics just couldn't show it.

You also have to have a certain threshold of approval aka he doesn't hate you.
Which I learned with my monster Lav. I didn't get a flirt on the battlements and then he went straight to WOW I HATE YOU disapproval convo in the next cutscene. So I reloaded, killed some darkspawn with him and got him a few shinies, and then bam, flirt, could never regret this life not with you in it, etc. (This rapid fire change made me giggle so hard ngl)

Blackwall, who just joined the Wardens and survived the Joining ritual, is being given **** by the other Wardens for stealing the real Blackwalls identity. Ser Ruth reminds the rest of the Wardens that they're no better, before being a Warden and especially the **** they pulled at Adamant, and that the real Blackwall would be ashamed of all of them. Blackwall thanks her, but she brushes it off by saying if he really wants to thank her he will have to live up to the title he has taken upon himself.
I'm indifferent to who companions romance if they're not involved with the protagonist. I like that they find their own companionship.
And the recent conversations on Master Dennet being an unintentional peeping tom got me thinking. See, I never really noticed him when I visited Blackwall so no issues there, but I DID feel bad that he left his family and his farm just to come all the way to Haven/Skyhold and guard ONE lousy animal in the stall. I know theoretically he's watching "all the horses," but c'mon, let's get real. It's still one stall, period. His poor wife's running the farm by herself! I decided to see if it was possible to just leave him in Hinterlands. Turns out yep. Not recruiting him means you won't be able to buy mounts that are normally available through him, but the mounts that are delivered via the war table will show up just fine. Since I only ride the nug mounts, no problems here. Blackwall won't mind checking on Knuckled Thunderer for Cadash. We gots some privacy incoming! Yeah yeah! =D
But how about Ser Ruth x Blackwall (the former was denied any judgement and went back to the Wardens, the latter was judged to be handed to the Wardens)?Fellow Grey Wardens finding common ground in having done bad ****, wanting to die for it, but were denied and now strive to find redemption by protecting the innocent? Perhaps Ser Ruth finds her faith in the Grey Wardens resorted with Blackwalls idealism of the Order, and maybe finds something more

My HoF was much older than that, I didn't care what the game wanted it to be 
She was the younger sibling, but her older brother was married and had like a 10 year old kid. In my game, she was only about 5 years younger than her brother. She just hadn't gotten married yet, as she didn't want to, and her parents spoiled her. Plus, it's like 10 years that all went down, so she's older now anyway!
(edit: I also head canon that Alistair is older, about her age, and was just very very sheltered in the chantry/early templar training)
(edit #2: This is all just personal preference, as I have trouble personally rp-ing an under 20 hero figure so I prefer to make everyone older. I have no issue reading other people's young characters, and I love Buffy & the whole Katniss deal and whathaveyou, but just in my own stories!)

I felt bad for Dennet, and his family and the horses. Because the horse had just the stall. No training grounds, no pasture, no place to move around! Although I know it's just how the game is laid out, so really there would be places to ride the horses and they wouldn't all be stuck in a stall. Since you obviously call them in from somewhere when you change them out

Speaking of a potential romance, I think that with a Cousland age difference would be among the least of their problems.
Yeah but thedas ships their kids early i think. And I've known people getting married at 18 but idd we dont really know how old fergus to make that 5 years diff between him and the hof that significant.
I don't exactly go by "game" canon when deciding my character's ages, or even what age I want the companions to be. I keep their stories and background intact, of course, and if their character ever said, "Hello, I'm 22 yrs old" I would keep it, but since they never do.... I like to create my own ideas, then
In my own personal Cousland head canon, when I played, I made Fergus 27-35ish (lots of wiggle room!), and my Couslands (I had a few) were anywhere from 22-28. I can always come up with a good story idea as to why they weren't married off yet, to make it believable to me. Some of my HoF were older than that, but just slightly and those were my dwarfs. I think my Brosca was the eldest of all my HoF. Sometimes I miss playing her 
It would definitely make an interesting story, if Blackwall met the HoF upon joining the wardens. I saw a little ficlet where he met Bethany Hawke, and it was very nice to read.

I think the only Wardens who pretty much need to be in that age range are Amell/Surana. Fresh off the Harrowing and all. Tabris too, perhaps.
Every other Warden has a bit more wiggle room, I find - though I could never see my canon Warden (Mahariel) as anything over her very early 20s. Like, an 'I just turned 20 yesterday and the 2 at the beginning of my age is frightening me' kind of 20 year old.
I even made my Amells & Surana's a little older (early 20's), since Jowan & Lily were still apprentices without going through their Harrowing. And I could never make Jowan be younger than 22 to me, for whatever reason, I don't know! So I just head canon'd that First Enchanter Irving made it a rule that no apprentices would go through their Harrowing before the age of 21, because in his predecessors day too many apprentices were either dying or being made tranquil.

Yeah, I guess one could headcanon a bit to bump Amell/Surana's ages up. We don't really have an implicit Harrowing age anyway, I think.
Tabris is the tricky one. For City Elves it seems like 'You're an adult now! And...now you're married. Have fun.'
I know! My Tabris was actually my youngest one. I figured she could be young, as the life of a city elf and then going through that ordeal really made her older than her years. The only way I could get her out of the teens was to say that it took a while to seal the deal with an exchange of suitors between alienages. That her father really was determined to wait until he could find someone he thought she would be able to love.
addendum: My Mahariel didn't make it much farther than Lothering, so I don't have a great story for her. She might've been the youngest if really looked in to it.
