This is how it worked for me: We got to Skyhold, talked to him and got the scene on the battlements where he pushes you away. Then I went out into the world, did some stuff, went to talk to him again and it triggered a cutscene where he tells you about the Grand Tourney and the old chevalier. Then straight after that cutscene, I clicked on him again and he apologised for 'pushing me away', but if I was agreeable he would show me why - then I got the Explanations quest in my log, went to the Storm Coast with him and upon return to Skyhold got the cutscene in the Inquisitor's room, and the romance started officially. All this was before doing WEWH or Here Lies the Abyss.

Edit: may be an obvious thing to say, but I'm not sure if you need a certain level of approval to trigger all the scenes - I would imagine that you do.

Edit 2: IIRC, all the Revelations (ie the leaving) stuff only occurs after the Siege of Adamant in the Here Lies the Abyss main mission

I know, this is how I played my first run, I was just curious to know what happens if you do the WEWH before the romance starts ;P

I learned my lesson the hard way. Talk to the war table first before visiting companions. I was tearing my hair out with Morrigan showing me the eluvian and all I wanted was to know where Blackwall went.

I've read that Josephine will show up if you don't have an active romance. The Cassandra-mancers will miss out on dancing with her if they do WEWH first because apparently her romance's not locked in until her quest is completed and THAT only shows up after Adamant or WEWH is done, whichever comes first. I could be wrong, but that's the gist of it.

Thank you :) Does Blackwall leave after the WEWH mission also if the romance is not yet active? If so I wonder if the romance will ever have the chance to start...

I'm tempted to exile the Wardens and kick Blackwall out with a romance active just to see what happens (but I won't XD)

I think you would trigger the romance cutscene before the leaving one, because he only leaves at high approval, and the romance initiation scene is a lower approval and priorities sequentially first.

However I have heard that after Adamant and WEWH, you're locked out of all romances. I haven't actually found that to be true? Because I could still romance Cullen after those, but maybe that's just a weird blip.

So I would absolutely trigger the romance before the ball if you've already done Adamant, because you could be completely SOL and also because dancing!!!

I have to admit, though my main LI was Cullen as intended, something about Blackwall drew me in, but my Inquisitor remained loyal to Cullen despite the mutual attraction. I love the mystery behind him and that he has a good heart that lay dormant for a long time because of his regret and self-hate. He grew a lot as a character and I have to also admit, it was only on my second playthrough that I realized his dialogue hinted at his future deception. Like he wanted to confess but couldn't.

I've seen a few people say they started the Cullen romance after dumping Blackwall at the trial.  Cullen, unlike Blackwall, though doesn't have his romance tied to any of his cutscenes and can be started at any time (at least before the ending).  Maybe after the Temple of Mythal is when the romances lock out?

Ah so it's not WEWH that necessarily triggers his leaving, thanks... anyway I have no intention to miss the scene on the terrace at Halamshiral ;D I was just curious. Anyway no, I haven't done Adamant yet in this run, it's the first time I'm just back from Crestwood with enough points to investigate all locations at the war table AND make WEWH at the same time O.o

@ Kalala: I think every romance works in a different way, there's not a general rule, am I wrong?

Just wanted to share a couple neat screenshots. I went into a cave in Storm Coast and hadn't yet lit the torch on the wall when we got ambushed by deepstalkers. Fought in the dark for a bit and then there was a big puff of green glow that really illuminated Blackwall very nicely. That's certainly one argument for going into dark caves.

Yeah, I think you're right.  The only time I'm certain you can't start any romance would be after the ending since all companion interaction is thrown out the window XD

Ah haha sorry I must have misunderstood! ;)

In my playthroughs, I have always done WEWH before the Siege of Adamant. It just felt like the story flowed better to me that way. I had also officially started the romances (1st Cullen & 2nd Blackwall) before the WEWH story quest, so got the balcony dance scenes.

Aside from high approval rating, I always got the impression that you need to complete SoA to trigger further romance stuff - like 'Revelations' (including the leaving) for Blackwall, and 'desk time'  ;)  for Cullen. I have never done SoA before WEWH, so I have no idea if it is just SoA that triggers Revelations, or if you need WEWH completed too. I don't think it is just the WEWH mission on its own though, ie no leaving would occur until you had done SoA, romanced or no.

Mind you the best reason to start the romance before WEWH, is to not miss out on the dancing on the balcony

TDLR; you need a high enough approval, plus completed SoA to trigger him leaving.

You know how Blackwall can call three warrior spirits to make a wall? I have this theory that Blackwall calls his ghost buddies, and they go drinking , partying and go fun adventures.

It is a powerful image. Good thing we can't see the war nug from the front or the amount of manliness Blackwall is portraying would go down 25%. The war nug has powerful horn, but has a squishy body. It reminds me of Blackwall 75% body hair, 25% teddy bear, All leather.

The second gif in the set (visible via the credit link) shows the nug rearing up against a brilliant sky, and it's majestic as hell! Like a scene from a Western that I never knew I wanted to watch.

And Blackwall's manliness is so intense, the 25% war nug penalty doesn't make a huge difference. We're still looking at a value of around...180%.
