Was all this as party banter or private talk?

I absolutely love Blackwall's desert story, which he tells while you're going through the dwarven tombs in Hissing Wastes. It completely hilarious. I really should record the whole thing. ^_^

it's under Inquisition option where you can ask him about companions and advisors.

Yes, this story is pretty cool. 4 playthrougs I still did not figure out who to take where. I neglected Varric before and finally found place in my party for him. Emprise du Lion, lots of Red Templars, lots of upset Varric. It's a very disturbing place. I can't decide which I love to hate more, Emprise or Exalted Plains. Because after Exalted Plains I wanted additional option for Halamshiral - dump Celine, Gaspard and Briala in one on those pits and burn them together with the undead. And I'm usually not that bloodthirsty.

I'm a little late to the party but,

Race-gating is pretty disgusting,IMO. It makes me think Cullen and Solas are bigots and racists. I love Solas, I really do. But it took me FOREVER to decide if I really wanted to romance him because of this. I just can't believe attraction solely depends on a pair of pointy ears, because that's all that is different between humans and elves and Dwarves are just short humans (as far as looks goes),Qunari are big humans with horns. I just always thought our characters were unique and special (call em Mary Sues, it's probably true), shouldn't the potential LI's see past the physical (Especially, Solas, of all people)?  Bah, this topic just really really bothers me, so I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead. I just hope race-gating was only because of the lack of resources.

I don't know about Cullen, because he never comment on your race (I think?), but doesn't Solas says something like "Your people suck. Well, except may be you." to Cadash?

I think if we could get to refer to him by his actual name, then they probably wouldn't have made Blackwall himself ask to be called that. He'd probably offer up a choice, Blackwall as a title or his real name. Especially to those that are his friends. I think it's a lack of resources gaming decision to have him stay Blackwall -- too much of a pain to make sure everything refers to him as Thom after you finish the quest, since everyone would finish it at different times.

I get the reason why it isn't an option. It's just stupid. Why would an Inquisitor who doesn't care for Rainier adhere to his wishes to keep being called Blackwall?

That's one reason why I choose the "live the lie" option, since at least then it makes sense to not refer to him as his actual identity.

Oh, oh...Blackwalls barn scene evokes some real-world nostalgia. Also, I found you can avoid the "the Inquisition is corrupt" line from him at the judgment scene. Still no material for my main Inquisitor - too unsophisticated - but at least I can play the romance now and enjoy the parts I like without the desire to slap someone's face.

^^^ I would like to know how one could avoid that line during judgement! It's never really bothered me, but I'd like to see how the scene flows without it.

ETA: That "All of them" line. *sigh* The first time I heard that, I was just like "Do I really have to search the palace for stuff? Can't I just hang out here and dance with Blackwall?" That delivery was close to perfect.

Solas even feels this way about the Dalish. He doesn't have much respect for them either, which just makes me wonder, again, why he was race-gated. Other then because of resources.

They continue to call him Blackwall. This is explained away with Blackwall requesting to keep the name as a title to remind him of what he aspires to be. All three Inquisitor responses are varying levels of agreeing to his request.

Ahh, I see! Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I checked Evil Leliana version, and it's still the same.
"Leliana is lonely. That's really is all I see. All she has is her work. I pity her sometimes, as odd as it may seem."
Apparentely it doesn't depend on her personal quest, pity. Aww, Leli, but my Warden loves you... sniff.

Awww. :crying:

*replays Leliana romance in Origin bc REASONS*

I hope you and Joe know each other because you are both the "driving this thread to the gutters" ppl that I love

 Clearly I need to come here more often.

For the elven glory! (Sera is onto something.)

Somebody wanted Beardwall with an earring? (NSW, I guess).

I lauded patch 5 too early, sorry about that. Amulets of Power exploits are removed and so are Amulets themselves. Dragons and chests don't drop them now at all. And you will not receive one from the Fade. So, another patch for a patch? I'm really tired of this.

I might be in the minority, I dunno, but I never interpreted that Solas scene as him insulting dwarves. I just saw a socially-awkward man showing character growth by showing admiration for the Inquisitor in his own way. Blackwall made me narrow my eyebrows with his, "I'd thought you'd be ... nevermind, I'm being a dumb-butt" intro. =p

Yeah he's pretty gross about...everyone, lmao, because he's living that special snowflake dream, but he is particularly obnoxious about dwarves and Qunari in banters/dialogues with Varric and IB and that balcony convo with Adaar/Cadash. The difference with the Dalish is that his disdain there is personal and infused with guilt and you can call him out on it (on disapproval path) or have him admit he may be wrong (on approval path), while Adaar and Cadash just have to take it.

I think he's race gated for story reasons, and I don't like them. The story they wanted to tell with his romance is ...questionable to me. Cullen is def for time, and that makes me sad. He'd be a great romance for a dwarf or Qunari.

(I love Solas btw I'm not trashing him, it just is canonically there and I'm not interested in ignoring it haha)

Darn, I have to talk to him some more then. :)

I agree about Cullen. In any of my playthroughs he has never said anything or done anything or acted in any way that would suggest him being a racist or biggot. And I've only played with human once, all other playthroughs are with elfs.

I love Solas but I was kinda pissed I couldn't call him out on his racist grandpa bs. Man, I like you dude, don't be such a dick because I'm a qunari.

In regard to Blackwall keeping the name, two thoughts that go along with my uber sad, bittersweet head canon that I was thinking today.

I would have loved the option to call him Thom, and in my personal headcanon he joins the wardens either through his own volition (if you made him atone) or you send him there as part of judgement. Post Corryfishes death the inquisition continues, your relationship continues, and you decide to marry and he heads off to his joining not knowing if he'll return. He doesn't want to use Blackwall's name anymore so he returns to his original Thom Rainier, but he feels as he's moving on that maybe he should change it to something completely different. My inquisitor tells him why not take 'Adaar' and he feels torn about it because it's associated with her and he feels not worthy of it.

But she insists. I like the idea of Warden Adaar.

Anyway continuing my super sad head canon, 20 years later he hears his calling and you and he (and in my version our son who serves as an honour guard to Queen Anora) travel to Orzammer and to the deep roads where you say your farewells by the base of the stone paragons.

*cue weeping*

I love that he would take her last name, so sweet. And then bittersweet, with the Warden ending. :crying:

I always take "Blackwall" to be very much like a title afterwards, just as he says. Similar to Inquisitor or Herald or Commander, they call him that in more formal settings, but around the tavern or in private, everyone calls him by his given name. I like to head canon that Kiara even makes it an official Inquisition position, sort of like the inquisitor's guard, the Blackwall of the Inquisition. Of course, this is just in my Kiara universe, because she would totally do something like that. Not sure about my friend type playthroughs.

With regards to Cullen, I totally feel like it was a lack of resources that limited his love interests. I can't blame him for that anymore than I blame Blackwall for keeping the name Blackwall, or not having a conversation about his release after the judgement. They are gaming issues to me, not really character issues. Solas on the other hand... it feels like more part of his story and his character, so I do raise my eyebrow at him. Makes me think of my own grandfather, who loves people individually no matter what race/sex because he connects with them on a personal level, but is eyerolling, earpluggingly anti-everything when it comes to groups as a whole.

^I love the idea of Blackwall as an "official" position in the Inquisition.

I sure wish we had more dialogue about it, though... my Inquisitor wants to call him by whichever name he identifies with most. What's comfortable and right for him. If he aspires to be Blackwall (the man he has been all this time, and the Warden who saw something in him...), she'll go right along with it. And if he wants to redeem the name Thom Rainier, she'll happily oblige him and call him that!

But it's just sort of weirdly addressed in the game with those dialogue options so idk.

I'm doing a Cullenmance at the moment. Finally got some of the mods to work! Yay! Ciara looks grand in red and black (took screenies of her and Blackwall) and Varriel is dashing in his new togs.

Also love the red/black Halamshiral finery. I took some new pics of Blackwall and her dancing. I'll play around later and hopefully get a nice gif or two from it.

I tried installing the mod for better pjs for fem humans but it didn't work. Any friendly mods for human females that are okay with the new patch?

I'm sorry, I am not saying that Cullen is a racist/bigot, it's just that it was the "feeling" it gave me because of the gating, ya know? Solas I totally see that as part of his character. Why I think his romance would have been more fulfilling, to be able to see him struggling with falling for someone who isn't an elf. One reason Blackwall and Iron Bull are becoming my favorites, they have no such limitations. They don't give a crap if I'm human or otherwise.

I just got the PC version of Inquisition, so I'm going to be getting that Solas mod (you better watch out Solas, I'm coming after you with my human  B) )

Yeah I mean its one thing to know logically it was time but it's another to have to reconcile it in game, because it still does feel...well, you know, gross. and Cullen HAS said gross things about dwarves and Qunari before this game, and while it's obvious now he's changed (and both remarks were made under extreme duress and one was to Oghren who is in fact pretty gross lbr), going into the game I didn't know how it was going to play out and people here were happily repeating all that as reasons for why Cullen would be race gated, lmao, so I was suspicious.

In my headcanon Blackwall does take Lavellan's name and becomes Thom Lavellan when they get married. Since "Rainier" died in the gallows, there is no reason to keep the Rainier name alive and feed suspicions. He never joins the wardens and does get an official position in the Inquisition, since he was a captain once and has the know-how. Their firstborn is a dark-haired and green-eyed boy, who has his father completely wrapped around his little finger. :)

I so wish I could draw. *imagines blackwall holding a baby*

My headcanon is that my Cadash calls him by his real name in private, mostly because it is really hard to make a shorter/nickname out of Blackwall. Blacky? Wally? Wall-wall? She tried. She tried real hard. But Thom, Tommy Tommy Tom Tom, my Thomato is just way better. I actually hadn't thought about the name thing, but I kind of want her to take the Blackwall name now, just because Hella Blackwall is a hilarious name, but eh, I don't think she would. I imagine Hella would want them to come up with their OWN name they could share, but all her offerings would be like HELLA AND THOM NUGALOPE or HELLA AND THOM BLACKDASH or something ridiculous like that and they'd finally just be like "uh let's just keep our names we can figure something else out later."

I honestly don't have a lot of post-game headcanosn for them....I think I'm partially waiting for DLC to drop for that? Not sure what the hesitation there is.

I do hope we get some kind of DLC soon. Not that I need a reason to play this game yet again, though, but it's always nice to get something new. :)

EDIT: Okay, I couldn't get that baby image out of my head and just had to do something about it. Since I can't draw... well... this is what I managed to cook up...
