@Bugsie: don't see how that rant is directed at me o.O. You raised some pretty good points too imo...
100% agree with you, whatever the reasons may be, Loghain's behaviors were inexcusable... Same goes for the Arishok, but I like them because they are complex and interesting characters. Also, I don't know whether this is accurate, but the general feeling I get off from some of the "Blackwall is an @$%" threads is that people who supported him actually excuse and "handwaved" his crimes. I think those people generally confused liking a character = being totally oblivious towards any flaws said characters have. I don't excuse what he did to the children, which is why my preferred sentence is sending him to the Wardens (which is an all-around good choice in regard to all the parties involved). I gave him his freedom with my Trevelyan, because I doubt she can handle losing him again, especially if it's due to her own action. While as a Lavellan (didn't banish the Wardens), she believes that he could finally, truly move on and fulfill what Gordon Blackwall (what a name
) wanted and saw in Rainier. And what Cole said about it was chilling... "You wonder if they want you to feel guilty, if they want you to make up for what you did... but they don't. If they're watching, all they want is not to have died."
Nothing he does, no matter what good he does afterwards will never redeem himself of that crime. However, at the same time who am I to stop him from helping the Inquisition when his main intention was to really try to save the world (I saw that dialogue with the farmers in the Hinterlands during my 2nd playthrough after knowing who he is, and I thought that is actually a nice insight). I trust that at the start of DAI, whatever he does as Blackwall is by his own admissions, and not because it stems from him trying to get over his guilt. At the same time, no matter what kind of excuses or personal agendas the other companions may have had in regard to joining the Inquisition, I don't care actually... because at least, they are trying to help to close that big ugly tear in the sky, rather than babbling about whose a** sits on a metal chair. This was why I actually went "wtf" at people who went all rage at Rainwall's deception because it angered some prissy Orlesian nobles. There is a big tear in the sky, and all you guys care about was that you donated money/soldiers "unrightfully" because it was a false Warden who invoke that treaties (seems to me like it's just another opportunistic moment for them to try and get some voice out there, and hopefully to curry some favors with the Inquisition... Always gave them Cullen's middle finger option).
"I like Thom for a number of reasons, and I like that his personal quest made me question my own double standards regarding how justice can be served"
Spot on regarding this too Bugsie! Sometimes we forget that in video games, we made all the "morally right" choices, because we feel that is how we think we would have done. Of course it is easy in video games! But the reality of it - is that in real life, things are not *THAT* simple. They think that Rainwall giving himself up to the Orlesian authorities isn't a big deal, and that they would totally do it 100% too... Ummm... I would like to see that you guys actually would do it in real life too! Or the fact that, "I would never kill children and be such a snob about it"... Well, I would actually be afraid if a murderer in real life is running around BSN in modern society
DOH! But if we are looking at the context of medieval society, I am totally 100% on what Rainwall said in jail "in another situation, this crime would have earned me a medal". Rainwall's character imo serves to hold up a mirror to us as the players and how we forgot that we have our own double standards too... Of course things are easier in video games to set up a higher moral standard in video game world as it bear no real life consequences!
I kind of excuse the romance judgment scene because I doubt the Quizzy is right on her mind too (mine does because I made my Trevelyan have an unhappy family situation), but I can definitely see how it can be totally off depending on what characters you RP
Soooooooo much better doing it as my Lavellan...
@Gilsa: By all the Gods of the Seven Kingdoms, I sure hope no one will "soften" up to Joffrey in the long run
! Man, that kid was detestable! He sure is one kid I would actually gladly reward his murderer handsomely LOL... His actor is really awesome, kind of sad that so many people hate him and Lena Headey in real life o.O but I guess they take it as a compliment in regards to their acting.
(excuse my grammar, but not about to proofread my blargghhh
)
