Awesome, thanks for info. The DLC is pretty long as it is without running all the companions through it for dialogue testing. (I'm told that Iron Bull has a lot to say just like Varric does.)

WOW. I was clicking "like" for the image you posted and was startled when it morphed into Rainier. That is super awesome. Love it!

He looks so much more trustworthy with the beard. Without it he looks shady as all hell. Fitting.

Definitely, short hair and stubble really sells the image of the foolish young man that Rainier once was.

Incidentally, just ran through In Hushed Whispers with Blackwall for the first time and did not expect the little "hold the line" moment we got from him, where he immediately snaps into gear and begins giving orders for how they're going to defend the hall... between that and how he rallied those villagers against bandits, I can definitely see now why he was considered a great captain in the Orlesian army before his fall from grace.

Need to start bringing Blackwall along for the ride more.

He really does, which is odd since beards usually hide stuff rather than the other way around.

So I did come to this thread for a reason but that tarot card-like thing up there distracted me for a good 5 minutes and I completely forgot what i wanted here. It's a little hypnotising...

Ooo, that tarot card - very nice! I've been trying to avoid the forums since I haven't had a chance to play the Descent DLC yet, but I'm glad that I was weak enough to pop into the thread for a peek today.

I'm still on my SW:TOR jag - finishing up the story arcs on my last two characters, so I should maybe be able to get to the Descent DLC next week. Did notice that Malavai Quinn also has blue eyes and dark hair as I've been going through my Sith Warrior's storyline. I kept thinking: "Hmm, he kind of looks like what Blackwall might have looked like during his Rainier days...guess I'll keep him." The only problem is that Quinn is WAY less fun because he's got a serious stick up his butt and almost no sense of humor. :P

In Quinn's limited defense, he doesn't look bad in a uniform. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint), I've made Quinn wear Canderous Ordo's vest and Atton Rand's pants lately, because I was getting tired of seeing so many male NPCs wearing Imp uniforms. That being said, I think Blackwall would also look good in Canderous Ordo's vest and Atton Rand's pants (I like to mix up my armor sets, btw).

And does a good job of it too!

Was running around the Exalted Plains and found a codex that suggets that Corporal Rosselin knew Rainier, yet you can have Blackwall in the party when you're fighting the undead on the ramparts and he doesn't have any reaction whatsoever.

Missed gameplay opportunity or proof of the power that beards possess, who can say?

If you send Blackwall to the wardens - I really hope they make him use his real name.  I dislike the idea of Blackwall as an honorific.  He should wear his shame and redeem his name through becoming Warden Rainier.  I just get the idea if we see more of him they'll continue to use Blackwall, which for me would be disappointing.

How do others feel about that??  Do you prefer the honorific over his real name?

Nah. I would prefer to use his real name post-Revelations, regardless if he's sent to Wardens or stayed in Inquisition(and I kind of headcanon it). Using Blackwall makes sense only in case that you forced him to continue his lies. And I think the primary in game reason for him staying Blackwall is notorious "resources shortage". They would have to record all dialogues that involve his name twice. It sucks though that arguably  in this case it stands in the way of character development.
By the way, finished the Descent recently and was really disappointed that there was no difference whether you take Blackwall post- or pre-Revelations(not that there were lots of interactions with Inner Circle to begin with). So here's hoping that in future DLCs we'll have at least something like one particular dialogue option to call him Thom. It shouldn't be much trouble.

I prefer his original name, but figured they kept Blackwall to keep things simple on the writing end of things. Same reason why I'm pretty sure he's going to be a Grey Warden no matter what the Inquisitor decides.

I prefer calling him Blackwall and using Gordon's name as something to aspire to rather than hide behind.

I'm fine with whatever name they assign him in the game.  His actions will determine the man he is/has become I think.

I've heard some pretty disappointing things about the DLC and I suppose I won't bother getting it unless it goes on sale.  Honestly I prefer the companions actually interact with my pc and the new environments and story and if that's not the case I don't see a reason to buy it.  :(

Well, let me see if I can break it down for you a bit to see if the DLC does have what you want or if it misses the mark:

1. Companion interactions -- Cutscene-wise, your companions will react to you at the beginning of the DLC and in the end of the DLC. The middle parts are limited to party comments as you explore the Deep Roads. The two dwarven NPCs take up the lion's share of cutscenes and commentaries. I found them to be charming and likeable. Blackwall has a few comments about darkspawn/Grey Warden, but not much else. Iron Bull mainly shines on the Deep Road levels. Cole has insightful comments on the abyssal caverns levels (when the lyrium starts to show up). Solas and Vivienne had almost nothing to say. Varric is a chatterbox compared to the rest of them, for obvious reasons. I didn't run it with Cassandra, Sera, or Dorian so I'm not sure on those three yet.

2. Story -- There is one. If you're not a lore nerd or a dwarf fan, you may be underwhelmed. Otherwise there's a lot of meaty speculation. I do understand why some might not feel that it changes anything because it's a stand-alone DLC. It can't impact the ending. Same as the Leviathan DLC for Mass Effect -- they couldn't show up for the final fight. I saw someone say they wished there was a major choice to make. That might have been a bit more fulfilling, maybe, but it wouldn't be reflected in the epilogue anyway. I saw this DLC as setting the stage for future games just like Legacy was to DA2. If you go in with those writing limitations in mind, you can take it at face value instead of hoping for something major.

3. Cutscenes -- There are a lot of them. If you love taking screenshots of your character, this DLC will deliver.

4. Interactions -- I counted 1 historian, 4 magic, and 2 nobility dialogue options. (Dwarven icons, too, if you're a dwarf.) Those perks are put to good use! ;)

5. Gear -- Tier 4 schematics for every armor and weapon class. Even if they're not your thing, they do look good on Iron Bull who remains bare-chested with spikes coming out of his shoulders.

6. Not Trapped Forever -- This DLC is designed so you can come and go as you'd like. You're not stuck in the Deep Roads like in DAO. There are waypoints you can unlock as you explore so you can travel back to that spot later when you leave to sell your gear or just to go back to Skyhold. The side quests are not necessary to complete any more than shards are. You can complete the main story without doing all the quests.

7. Romance comments -- None. Not even a "you ok, babe?" It does not matter if you take Blackwall before/after Revelations. I honestly feel that Leviathan set the bar really high with the love interest expressing concern and rushing to Shepard's side. All DLCs should automatically have this kind of content from now on. =p

Personally I loved it because it really acknowledged my character as a dwarf and had a dwarf conversation icon to ask about House of Cadash's exile. I liked the dwarven armor and I like the idea of using the new armor design for Blackwall, especially if he is not sent to the Grey Wardens. It seemed odd to me that he would keep wearing the Grey Warden gear after Revelations, but with his respect for the Legion of the Dead's work on fighting the darkspawn, it sort of makes sense to me that he would wear the DLC armor.

If you ever do buy the DLC, I'm genuinely interested in what you thought even if you dislike it. (I have friends who ONLY play humans so I like hearing about the game from their perspective since I only play dwarves. After playing 10 dwarves in DAO, I was really shocked how different the narrative was for a Cousland playthrough when I finally gave it a try. Finally understood why people were soooooo fixated on Howe and Loghain and getting the throne for themselves.)

Omg, Gilsa! I love you right now! lol Thank you so much for the in depth analysis of the dlc.

I'm going to tell you all a secret, please don't hate me, but ......I've never played a dwarf.  Never.  *hides*  So that part doesn't make much difference to me...BUT, I did have some theories about the dwarves.  I've heard that I was right about some stuff so I am curious and want to play through it.....the lack of companion interaction really makes me sad though.  I've also heard there is a lot of combat and I prefer story.  But if there is lore stuff to find out/read that will sorta replace the lack of story and make me a little bit more interested.

There being no diff in bringing Blackwall before or post revelations makes me kind of sad too.  I really would have like that and:

What you said there, I can not agree with you enough.  You are right on the money with that!

I will be buying the dlc at some point but after being disappointed with JoH I just wasn't in the mood to be disappointed again :(

Thank you again.  So, so much!  I really appreciate it. :)

I didn't run it with Cassandra, Sera, or Dorian so I'm not sure on those three yet.

Cassandra and Sera are pretty quiet, but Dorian actually chimes in a bit, even in a dialogue with Inquisitor, Renn, and Valta.

If you want the most talkative party, Dorian, The Iron Bull, and Varric seem to be it.

I see there was a video for the next dlc...it actually looks interesting.  Guess I might be picking up descent sooner than later so I can be caught up before Sept. 8.

I hope our companions have lines this time.  I miss Blackwall.   :(

I saw the video. I'm told the DLC supposedly starts two years after the defeat of Cory. That'll be interesting to see if Blackwall has yet to leave for the Grey Wardens (if he's sent there) or if he did go and comes back, meaning he survived the Joining.

Reinstalling DA:I right now (with Origin's download speed should be ready in a week or so  <_< ). I skipped JoH and Descent, but the new DLC actually looks intriguing, though I don't care much about Solas. I think there's a good chance we'll get to interact with our squadmates for a change, hopefully that includes some romance-specific content. I mean, the mark seems to be causing trouble again, the Inquisition is losing favour with its allies (that was expected, imo) and it all seems to be getting to the Quizzy in a bad way (just what I like to see) - it would be weird if our LIs had nothing to say to us about all this. Also, the trailer has Blackwall wearing that hot helmet aw yiss

I skipped descent too.  But maybe I will just get the new dlc and get descent later.

I agree about the helmet! I loved seeing him getting in his battle stance...aww yeah!  It seems like the Inquisition (or the Inquisitor) is on trial. Maybe I will dust off DA:I and make sure my 3 characters are ready.

Should we get excited now?
