Now that I've played Trespasser I very happy I made Blackwall a Warden.

My questions for those who had romanced him and sent him to the Wardens:

1. Is he still called Blackwall or does he go by Thom Rainier in the DLC now?

 

2. What does his epilogue say? I'd be much obliged if someone could share the text.

 

3. When you see him for the first time and he acts like he's just returned to be reunited with you at the palace, does he talk about the wardens? Did he go through the joining? Anything about the reception he got from other wardens?

He goes by Thom, and is a proper Warden with taint and doom. He's posted in the Free Marches IIRC. I haven't got the time to take a screen of the epilogue slide right now, but it says that he's called back to the Wardens. He avoid them for a year, but in the end he has to leave the Inquisitor. He promises to come back, but he never does. One day she gets a Warden-constable badge with a white griffon feather in the mail and they never see each other again. It's depressing but it could be worse, at least he's not turning into a

I can't say I'm happy about that outcome, not for a romanced inquisitor (I didn't make him a warden, but I head canoned that he chose to go to the wardens well after the inquisition was over). @Keala, that poster came into gloat about that outcome, not really to discuss, they were happy obviously for a very different reason that most of us here are. 

 

If he lives on with the inquisitor he does all sorts of good deeds for prisoners and makes amends with some of the men under his command during the Callier incident, and that makes me supremely happy.

 

So what Ynqve says is what happens with a romanced Warden Thom. Bioware JUST HAD to go there didn't they? *raises eyebrows*

 

All things considered, not all fans seem worthy of equal treatment. But I guess we asked for consequences didn't we?

 

However it does make me think

I'm all for consequences but yeah. Not going to lie, it wasn't an optimal outcome.

And joy of joys, my next Inquisitor to go in is a Solasmance, I sure know how to pick them. 

 

And to top it off, where others got a wedding scene, Thom gets a scene where the Inquisitor wakes up alone - again- and then he show up to tell her something like "I'm not leaving you." But in the end that's exactly what he does.

Well my second pt will be with Dorian. I haven't heard anything really negative about that romance *crosses fingers* but Blackwall is off to the wardens. My third pt I left him in Val Royeaux, so you know... (that was hard but for rp purposes had to be done.)

 

But o god, first pt I sacrificed the Chargers... pretty sure that's gonna blow back in my face with Bull.

 

Regarding your romance with Solas Ynqve - you have my condolences for whatever the outcome is.

Really loved the DLC!  Here are my thoughts re. Blackwall's role.  In my game, he was free and no longer a Warden, and involved with my Qunari mage Inquisitor.

I like all the writing of Blackwall in Trespasser (though there are the occasional odd moments), but what I especially like is the way he goes by Thom Rainier now.  I think that shows full acceptance of, and repentance for, his past.  It's somewhat in contradiction of what he said previously after Revelations (when he said that he'd keep going by Blackwall), but whether he simply changed his mind in-character or the writers decided to retcon it a little, I prefer it.  It symbolises no more lies.  

 

From the perspective of my playthrough, him accepting his name has special significance.  This was my first playthrough, and before I'd reached Revelations I thought it was quite obvious that Warden Blackwall was neither Blackwall nor a Warden.  I figured it out earlier than Adaar (she doesn't know as much about Wardens as the player), but by the time of the Fade quest, it was really clear even to her.  I imagined, after she figured it out, that she had these internal debates: should she tell him that she knew?  Would it relieve the guilt he seemed to carry and free him from the burden of maintaining a lie?  Or should she show her love by trusting him to tell her in his own time?  But, in the middle of all that, a certain loneliness asked: When will you let me call you by your real name?  When will you realise that the person I care about is you, that you don't have to pretend about anything?  So him taking back his real name fit perfectly into this little story that I'd imagined within their relationship.

 

The initial conversation with him was a bit odd, with the transition to a bedroom and then back to the outdoors.  Going to the opera later on with Josie contextualised that this was showing something that happened later, or that this grand gathering was happening over a few days, giving time for things like these to happen.

 

I like the fact that, when the anchor flared up and caused serious pain, Blackwall was the one to express the most concern about her.  I expect that it's written this way for all LIs who can be in the party at the time - nonetheless, I think it's extremely appropriate.

 

Just one little disappointment.  After Cassandra asked Adaar about marriage, I possibly built up expectations on that front a little too high (especially as I was seeing people buzzing around the forums about marriage being possible in the DLC), but at least Adaar could give a positive opinion on the subject.

Did you go to the storm coast and retrieve Blackwall's (the real Blackwall's) badge? You won't get the crisis quest to fire otherwise as far as I know.

 

Yeah I did that. You can't get the "Batman" balcony romance scene without doing that. I just never could get his approval high enough for the crisis quest to trigger later. Alas, in the end he doesn't even show up in Trespasser.  

 

I will need to remedy that with my other playthroughs. 

 

It appears mine Blackwall bugged, as he disappeared after starting the Trespasser. Although in my playthrough, his second quest with him going to jail never appeared, he simply stayed in Skyhold through the whole game as selectable companion, Blackwall (could take him everywhere, he also commented past Corypheus etc.). Then, after strating Trespasser, he is nowhere to be seen. His card in codex disappeared, strangely enough, he now appears crossed out on character selection as Thom Rhainer (although he never revealed his identity, nor he never went anywhere in this playthrough).

 

Same thing happened to me. I think it's because you didn't do his crisis quest.

My Blackwall-romancing 'canon' Inquisitor sent him to the Grey Wardens, and I was happy with the ending. It felt like the right conclusion for my particular character and her relationship with him - she never expected to get anything good out of what happened at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, so the fact that it didn't last forever seems bittersweet rather than outright tragic. I like to think the feather is from one of the griffins that hatched during Last Flight - now there's a situation where it seemed like all hope was extinguished only to turn around unexpectedly.

 

I was just happy Blackwall Thom didn't die during his Joining! If he does indeed get killed during whatever the hell is going on at Weisshaupt, at least he does it as a real Warden. I was over the moon about the name change, too .

I had a romanced Thom (we get to call him Thom!!)  that was set free to atone and I was really pleased that he was actually doing stuff that made him felt as if he were doing that.  "And they lived happily ever after."  Without the mark to make eggs with though

I couldn't get the "let's have a drink" scene to fire with Blackwall at all during my canon playthrough. I chalked it up to her breaking up with him at the beginning of the romance during the Batman balcony scene (when he asks her to break it off). After that, she never took him anywhere, so she didn't get the full approval boosts for finding the Warden relics. She also let Celene get assassinated, and he hated that. I just don't think I got his approval high enough for that scene to fire, so she never got the quest where he runs away. He's still there at the end after Corypheus, but he never shows up in the DLC. I suppose the greyed out "Thom Rainier" card just shows that he eventually went off and got executed. 

 

I hate that I couldn't finish his quest and see him in the DLC (I always try to keep everybody in all the RPG's I play) but I suppose it does fit with her playthrough. She's all about duty and sacrifice for the greater good...and doing what she thinks is right, even if that means making the touch choices (like letting Celene die). She and Blackwall didn't see eye to eye at all after she broke it off with him. So it really does fit that he would never come clean to her about his lie.

The same goes for the surprise a certain someone *cough* Bull *cough* gives you for telling him to follow through on his duty during his quest much earlier in the game...that hurt like a kick in the teeth even when she didn't romance him, but I can really see why it would end up like that for her. That was what caused her to ultimately crack at the end of the DLC (with the swear scene which was perfect) and then throw the book down and leave. She was done with duty - it had caused nothing but pain.

 

I'll just have to make sure I play things differently with my other playthroughs.

I was basing my thoughts off what I've gathered/seen on Tumblr, too. I'm thinking about

stuff like how he went around helping people, the slide where he's holding the prisoner's hands which very nearly teared me up, how she wakes up and he's not there but then he IS there (I have headcanoned a scene just like that), how he traveled with the woman he loved, ect. That's all the stuff that made me happy. We'll see how it works out when I actually get to play, but the fact that he does around making a difference, changing lives, and that he's with her, that means a whole lot to me. I didn't make him a warden, I let him go free, glad I did that. I do feel bad for people that did make him a warden tho. Because that sounds sad.

There was a little dialogue bit that gave me a lot of feelings, but I only managed to trigger it once. It was something like this (from memory):

Inquisitor (heart option): No matter what happened, I wouldn't trade these years with you for anything. I love you.

It happened just as I was about to enter the previously-locked mirror, after the last time in the Winter Palace, when the Qunari plot (and spies) has been revealed and the Inquisitor told the advisors that her hand was killing her. It got me so emotional that I reloaded and tried to trigger it with a different party setup, but it never came up again 

 

Anyway, just thought I'd share in case I'm the only one who got it, because it seems super-illusive. I wish there were specific banter trigger spots like in the past games, tbh.

Trespasser thoughts, with possible spoilers

Now I've heard some of the romanced warden things, I don't feel as salty about it as I did yesterday, but for the longer fic I had planned where he was a warden, has been totally messed up. This current pt for my canon quizzy, I made him atone, so it's delightful. Also, in the kiss scene at the reunion - NO SHRINKING LADY QUNARI - \o/.

Only played for a couple of hours as I have to work today, but will likely finish in the next day or so.

So far Sera/Blackwall friendship and banter is amazing and wonderful. Discussion of marriage with Cass, oh gosh wonderful. However, I can hardly get Bull to say two words to me. I don't see it working out well though considering I sacrificed the Chargers in this pt.

Warden Civil War. I mean, what exactly would be the point of contention to begin with?

 

Let's just hope they write the Wardens better in future games, I'm more than a little sick of them being dumped on all the time, and it would be nice to see them getting back to basics; a group of supremely talented combatants drawn from a diverse selection of backgrounds fighting monsters that try to destroy the world. There's no need for any further deconstruction here. That's not such a hard thing to do, is it?

In my playthrough I forgave him and gave him freedom. I LOVE that he is finally ok with being called Thom. Now in my head it's Sera + Inqui + Thom wandering around Thedas just doing **** together and finally having the fun and happiness they deserve. 

 

And guys I haven't seen anyone say that fem!Inqui is ****** Imperator Furiosa with the mechanical arm??? And Thom is Tom Hardy right?????? Right? Right!

 

And have you guys heard this dialogue between him and Sera where she's like "Why do dwarves built the Deep Roads so tall?" he goes,"Maybe it's overcompensating?","Funny you say that when you're carrying a giant sword around","It's not overcompensating,it's couterweight". I ****** love ridiculous dirty jokes and Sera laughing at dirty **** is pure gold.

 

Blackwall is either dirty flirting or "You're the reason I want to stay alive etc" no in between.

The mechanical arm slide only seems to show up if you've done the pranks with Sera in Trespasser. If approval is not high enough, no pranks and she's doing her own Red Jenny thing. That's probably why there aren't many comparisons with Furiosa, but I did think of her with that arm!

Romanced warden Rainier dies after Tresspasser, unromanced warden Rainier lives? I've had conflicting accounts - two friends who romanced him as a warden said that after he left after trespasser, he promised to return, but doesn't and is sent his badge and a white griffon feather (so he's a full warden but dies somewhere on the road when he's called back to Weisshaupt???? But then someone said he lives????

 

This is very confusing - why would they do that??? Given...
