I've totally spoiled myself - but I had to know everything was going to be okay for my problem bear.

Now that I've played Trespasser I very happy I made Blackwall a Warden.

All things considered, not all fans seem worthy of equal treatment. But I guess we asked for consequences didn't we?

I'm all for consequences but yeah. Not going to lie, it wasn't an optimal outcome.
Well my second pt will be with Dorian. I haven't heard anything really negative about that romance *crosses fingers* but Blackwall is off to the wardens. My third pt I left him in Val Royeaux, so you know... (that was hard but for rp purposes had to be done.)
But o god, first pt I sacrificed the Chargers... pretty sure that's gonna blow back in my face with Bull.
Regarding your romance with Solas Ynqve - you have my condolences for whatever the outcome is.
Did you go to the storm coast and retrieve Blackwall's (the real Blackwall's) badge? You won't get the crisis quest to fire otherwise as far as I know.
Yeah I did that. You can't get the "Batman" balcony romance scene without doing that. I just never could get his approval high enough for the crisis quest to trigger later. Alas, in the end he doesn't even show up in Trespasser.
I will need to remedy that with my other playthroughs.
It appears mine Blackwall bugged, as he disappeared after starting the Trespasser. Although in my playthrough, his second quest with him going to jail never appeared, he simply stayed in Skyhold through the whole game as selectable companion, Blackwall (could take him everywhere, he also commented past Corypheus etc.). Then, after strating Trespasser, he is nowhere to be seen. His card in codex disappeared, strangely enough, he now appears crossed out on character selection as Thom Rhainer (although he never revealed his identity, nor he never went anywhere in this playthrough).
Same thing happened to me. I think it's because you didn't do his crisis quest.
(Spoilers for Last Flight as well as Trespasser below!)

Must be it, although this quest never appeared in my playthrough. Kinda weird, as after defeat of Corypheus he had normal comments. Must be a bug, as there is not such an option in Keep. It simply counted as if Inquisitor never went after Blackwall, although he never disappeared prior to Trespasser.
I was pretty happy with the dlc. So glad!

I couldn't get the "let's have a drink" scene to fire with Blackwall at all during my canon playthrough. I chalked it up to her breaking up with him at the beginning of the romance during the Batman balcony scene (when he asks her to break it off). After that, she never took him anywhere, so she didn't get the full approval boosts for finding the Warden relics. She also let Celene get assassinated, and he hated that. I just don't think I got his approval high enough for that scene to fire, so she never got the quest where he runs away. He's still there at the end after Corypheus, but he never shows up in the DLC. I suppose the greyed out "Thom Rainier" card just shows that he eventually went off and got executed.
I hate that I couldn't finish his quest and see him in the DLC (I always try to keep everybody in all the RPG's I play) but I suppose it does fit with her playthrough. She's all about duty and sacrifice for the greater good...and doing what she thinks is right, even if that means making the touch choices (like letting Celene die). She and Blackwall didn't see eye to eye at all after she broke it off with him. So it really does fit that he would never come clean to her about his lie.
I'll just have to make sure I play things differently with my other playthroughs.

I was going wait to finish my 2nd playthrough (elf with romanced Dorian) before attempting the dlc. But I haver got to see what's in store for my female mage and her Blackwall. Off to load it up.
Found a video about Blackwall and Josephine in Trespasser.
There was a little dialogue bit that gave me a lot of feelings, but I only managed to trigger it once. It was something like this (from memory):
Anyway, just thought I'd share in case I'm the only one who got it, because it seems super-illusive. I wish there were specific banter trigger spots like in the past games, tbh.
@Scuttlebutt -- That's too bad you couldn't reload it. I made a save right before then, but I've never tried to reload it. I'll have to check and see. I looked over my screenshots and this is the version of that conversation that I got, if you wanted to compare companion commentary.
Trespasser spoiler under the cut.
I was extremely satisfied with Blackwall in the DLC. I wanted Thom Rainier content/development and it delivered.
Agreed, they did a pretty good job with him.

Let's just hope they write the Wardens better in future games, I'm more than a little sick of them being dumped on all the time, and it would be nice to see them getting back to basics; a group of supremely talented combatants drawn from a diverse selection of backgrounds fighting monsters that try to destroy the world. There's no need for any further deconstruction here. That's not such a hard thing to do, is it?

(just a semi-related note) I had Varric tell me that Weisshaupt is a mess etc on a save where the HoF is dead, so whatever is going on there probably doesn't involve that character at all (or at least is not about them).
