... why romanced Warden Thom seems to be dead and unromanced Warden Thom seems to be alive? I mean, the answer will probably be 'spoilers!' but even that might be a hint that they plan to clarify it later.

 

For what it's worth, my guess is that he always dies if sent to the Wardens, but they only felt the need to hint at it in the case of Inquisitors who are in an ongoing relationship with him.

If receiving the badge is actually signifying his death? As someone said earlier, it may be that years down the road, Thom sends the Inquisitor a token (pretty specific to their romance) to let her know he's still out there (and show her he's finally earned the badge himself)! Obviously non-romanced players wouldn't get that.

He still never returns, even if his death isn't until way after his epilogue (which was years after the game). So for me it's the same thing. The last contact they ever have is him sending that badge. Whether it was sent because he died or because he just wanted her to have it, it's all the same as far as their relationship is concerned.

He goes to Weisshaupt to be formally inducted into the Wardens. Afterwards he travels Thedas doing his Warden duties while finding time to help people in their troubles and giving children wooden carvings. Basically doing what he did as "Blackwall," just now he's officially a Warden. Or in another sense he becomes the Hero of Fereldan and getting distracted from his Warden duties to save kittens in trees 

 

Both endings seem fitting for Thom depending on your judgement. Either he takes to heart your forgiveness and spreads it to others or he takes to heart his ideals of the Wardens in helping and protecting others if you gave him to the Order.

I'm guessing the endings are being vague on purpose - I read an interview with David Gaider where he said having too specific information in the epilogue caused them grief after DA:O.

I have to admit, though, that vagueness was annoying with what happened at Weisshaupt.  I hope that it is all explained in game and not just left as an afterthought in an epilogue or wrapped up in a book.  Speaking of which I was disappointed with no mention of the HOF in my playthrough.

I couldn't chose "who are you again?" the first play through but I re-did it and it made me laugh.  He is such a good sport and man, the voice acting is just amazing.  I adore his laugh.

I love that! I do some of the joking lines with him.  He has a great sense of humor!  And I, too, do so love his laugh.  Him and Sera together is still fantastic!

That's actually an interesting thought.  I think you might be onto something.  It def could be to let her know he had earned his own badge and was still out there.  Maybe it is meant to be taken either way.

The romanced Warden ending could imply a similar situation with a romanced Cassandra. He now has bigger duties in the Wardens and can't find the time to travel across Thedas to see her.

Or he was one of the unlucky Wardens who have to embark on the Calling in far less than the upper 30 year mark.

 

(But there's no real reason for him to become a Warden, he's already earned his redemption and found something to fight for that he believes in. Really, the only benefit and perk to becoming a Warden is that after the Joining, he now has enhanced stamina in the sack)

Hey, I don't come on here often but after playing my Blackwall romance playthrough I wanted to post.

I had him join the Grey Warden's too with my Quizzy, and though I'm really sad that he died after getting so little time to spend with her, I'm not really surprised. You send him to join an order where there's a chance he'll die during his induction, nevermind spending his life in fighting Darkspawn. Given all the trouble with the Wardens on top of that, I was just really glad that they included him in the DLC instead of receiving a letter saying "Thom Rainer did not survive the joining." While joining the Warden's seems to have really been his true calling, I'm glad to know that their are other options which let you have a happy life with him too.

But the epilogue kind of implies Blackwall dies much earlier then his calling, and that is what is most crappy. If anything else, it's wasteful. To give him this chance to do good only to die early on.
