SpoilerBut the epilogue kind of implies Blackwall dies much earlier then his calling, and that is what is most crappy. If anything else, it's wasteful. To give him this chance to do good only to die early on.

At least the slide says it was years before he died and the IQ got his belongins, so that was years he spent fulfilling his Warden duty. Presumably he died an honorable Warden's death, too, so we know he got his ultimate wish of dying a good, worthy death for a good, worthy cause.
I'm grasping at straws because I'm upset at having to change my world state for his romance too (I think he sounds so genuinely happy to finally be a Warden in full right and I didn't wanna take that away from him - but I don't want to carry forth a world state where he's dead either), but... even if the romance got a sad ending via this path, at least it's comforting to know Warden Rainier died proud and fulfilled in his role, doing what he believed in.
