Thanks for the moral support. I'm still turning the whole thing over in my mind. I'm actually kind of tempted to dig out an earlier save and just free him, but it would require a lot of replay (again). Feels a little like cheating, but it's my game, right? However, I'll only do it if I can convince myself that it's in character. I vacillated between those two options originally, but decided it was Lavellan's duty to send him to the Wardens, and his to go to them. I felt like there was always a tension in their romance as to where their duties ended and their personal lives began. The fact that they were both so dedicated was one of the main reasons they were well suited to each other, but I found myself wondering constantly, "Can we be a little selfish now and then? Don't we deserve that?" Thus I felt vindicated when he asked her
not to drink from the Well of Sorrows because he didn't want to lose her.
I think Thom dying is particularly hard on me because my Inquisitor just seems so alone at the end. Her many friends have dispersed, her mentor is out there somewhere trying to destroy the world, she's lost her arm and her religion. . . and then Thom, too. It just feels like more punishment than she deserves. I'm not sure I can do that to her. (Even if it does have a certain symmetry with how my Warden died and left Leliana alone.)
When you say you lost Alistair at the Landsmeet, do you mean you spared Loghain and Alistair stormed out? In retrospect, I kind of blundered my way through Origins. I messed up in so many ways, it's a wonder things turned out mostly good. I somehow failed to notice that I could put points in persuade, and consequently my Warden could never persuade anyone to do anything. When Alistair blew a gasket at the mere mention of sparing Loghain, I took that to be the game telling me it wasn't really an option, so I let Alistair execute him. I had Alistair alone as king (couldn't persuade him and Anora to marry), and from what little Morrigan told me about her ritual, it sounded like there was a possibility it might lead to some other bad event down the road, so my Warden felt obligated to take the blow herself so Alistair could be king. When I found out after the fact that, had I played my cards right, I could have had Alistair and Anora rule jointly, let Loghain redeem himself killing the Archdemon, and give my Warden and Leliana a chance at happily-ever-after, I was filled with envy. But I still felt like I should let that worldstate stand, so I know what you mean. I make most of my characters' choices in good faith. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn't.
