@Gilsa
I can't argue with your reasoning. It all makes total sense. I also thought the Dark Ritual seemed likely to unleash some other menace on the world, one we might have less idea of how to deal with. I wasn't willing to take that risk for the sake of saving my Warden's skin. It would've felt like dereliction of duty. I do wonder, though, what will happen when all the Old Gods are dead? As far as I know, there'll probably still be darkspawn, and they might well still be a threat to the Dwarves, even if they're not venturing aboveground. I guess we don't really know?
Thanks for the encouragement. Fair point that setting Thom free at least doesn't come at the cost of something dodgy-sounding like the Dark Ritual. Before I played Trespasser, though, and had only seen the trailer, I wondered if the Exalted Council would bring up my saving him from the noose as an example of the Inquisition blatantly abusing its power. I was prepared to say, "Well, he is a Grey Warden now, protecting people from darkspawn. Do you really think he'd be doing more good if he were dead?"
Incidentally, I've read that some LIs can be married in Trespasser, but not Thom. I understand the characters' writers may have felt that marriage made sense for some and not for others, but if it wasn't actually an option, why did Cassandra bring it up to my Inquisitor? She got my hopes up!
