Thanks for sharing! I probably laughed more than I should've at that first one. Somehow I just find it hilarious, him standing on top of the dragon's remains like he owns them.

Just wondering idly -- know how Hawke's LIs would display Hawke's favor if they were romanced? I recall Fenris wearing a red wrist band? Been a while since I played DA2 so I don't remember what the other ones got. (Romanced them all except Merrill. Burned out on the game by the time it would have been her turn.) The Inquisitor and Iron Bull both share a dragon necklace (albeit not-visual) as an indicator of their romance. Blackwall gives the Inquisitor the warden-constable badge, but that was before his cover story was blown. Would that still be a symbol of their relationship? (Makes sense if he's sent to the Wardens.) What about Thom Rainier though? Any ideas there? I've always viewed the flowers he got for Josephine as exclusive for her because SHE had a specific interest in those flowers, not that it was a thing he did for any woman he was interested in, if that makes sense.

Just some fan art I saw on tumblr that led me down this path of musing over stuff like this when I recalled that the LIs in DA2 had a visual display of the relationship and I just wondered what the equivalent would have been for DA3 if that carried over.

Didn't see this earlier! These are from my first playthrough.

Spoiler

Currently on a semi-new playthrough, but loaded up with mods. I feel like Valta has given my inner roleplayer permission to put some makeup on my current dwarf and clean her up a bit. =p

@gilsa: I think Thom would carve something unique for the Inquisitor - and if he hasn't done it yet, he should get on it ASAP. Although Blackwall's badge certainly has a lot of meaning for them both now, It also has a lot of baggage attached to it. Maybe he could put his woodworking skills to use and create a small carving of a gryphon (something more detailed than that toy for the children perhaps) or do something symbolic like a halla for an elf-quisitor (maybe a mage-quisitor would get a miniature cheese wheel since she's from Ostwick - lol).

@silent and cred:I was actually thinking how hilarious that screenie was with him standing on the dragon's remains, hehe. I almost wish he'd done a Captain Morgan-style pose like that statue with the cheese wheels.

I like that idea a lot. He could definitely carve a nug, too!

@gilsa: Yeah, a nug was the first thing that popped into mind when I thought dwarf-quisitor. Even as a non-dwarf Inquisitor, I would totally go for a cute miniature nug!

I also I think I know how he made coin during the two year time leap.

All this talk of nugs... the other day I learned that 'playing nug-a-nug' is an historical euphemism for sex.

I wonder if Bioware knew this...

If you romance Merrill, she actually changes her entire outfit and starts wearing a shimmery white dress that sort of makes her look like a fairytale princess, IMO. It's adorable, but I was kind of fond of her thrift-store punk look.

re: Thom's favor. That's a good question. I had actually kept two "true griffon feather charms" in my valuables section, imagining my Inquisitor could give him one and keep the other (though that was when I sent him to the Wardens, and now I'm replaying from Revelations with a freed/atoned Thom, so I suppose a different token is in order now).

Also, thanks for the screenies! I like your Cadash. She looks tough and world-weary, but also gentle there.

@ AtreiyaN7

My Elfquisitor would love it if he carved her a halla figurine! I wonder what she'd give him? I'm not a lore expert like some people; I'm not sure what sort of item the Dalish might use to signify a romantic relationship. And Trespasser didn't let me put a ring on him. :(

@ Bugsie

That's hilarious. I had no idea. "Playing nug-a-nug" in the hayloft? What are you talking about? Whatever we were doing up there, there were definitely no nugs involved.

Hi Blackwall thread I got a question. I started Trespasser with my male trev, I banished the wardens from Orlais but after I did that I asked Blackwall to stay and continue to fight for the Inquisition. After Doom Upon all the World I talked to him briefly and he said he would help the Inquisition in whatever we plan to do next. So when I went to catch up with my old companions in Trespasser he wasn't there, I just got a note saying that he turned himself into the authorities, he hasn't been seen in 6 months or so. Was this an approval thing, was it because my approval wasn't high enough with Blackwall? I'm down a good warrior :/

If his approval isn't high enough to trigger his personal quest and resolve his situation he won't be available during Trespasser. You take a substantial hit for banishing the Wardens.

What Andraste_Reborn says.  If you didn't complete his personal quest or it didn't trigger because approval isn't high enough he does turn himself in and won't show up in Trespasser.  Sorry :(

I wonder what approval number is required to trigger Revelations.

I had no idea Revelations was tied to approval. I would've thought he'd want to address that issue regardless of his relationship with the Inquisitor. (Am I understanding correctly that his approval can be high enough not to leave, but low enough that Revelations doesn't trigger? In which case he just stays on with the Inquisition until the endgame and ignores Mornay? That just seems bizarre.)

@ Bugsie

A while after reading your post about playing nug-a-nug, I remembered something. From the wiki:

"One of the options available at The Pearl is 'Surprise me.' The result of this decision can lead to the following humorous scenarios upon waking up. . ." A list follows, on which the second item reads, "The Warden wakes with two nugs who, when clicked on, flop to the ground lounging and produce the message, 'The nugs avoid eye contact, trying to look busy.'" (dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/The_Pearl) <---  I tried to make this a link, but the window froze.

My warden was too monogamous to take advantage of the Pearl's services, so I only heard about this later. Anyway, I think it's fuel for the theory that someone at BioWare may have known exactly what "playing nug-a-nug" meant. ;)

Just popping in to reiterate what I (probably) said ~500 pages ago: Blackwall is cool. For a while there he seemed to get kind of a bad rap on these forums, but I think some of that really cooled off after folks went through his companion quest. So much of his banter is just so great in retrospect.

@jeff: I think that if a player can get past the initial shock and give him a chance, then they will see the payoff in Trespasser. His actions in the intervening two years (once you get up to date after chatting with him) shows that he was being genuine and wasn't just paying lip service in the past when expressing a desire to atone. As for the banter, yeah, I've always enjoyed hearing his banter with other characters; there was an exchange between him and Cole after we went through the eluvians in Trespasser that I found amusing this time around. He was pointing out that we could pinpoint where we were if we came back at night by using the stars, and then Cole said he knew exactly where he was (saying that he was "here" or something to that effect). If you hear the whole entire thing, it's pretty funny.

Both Blackwall and Loghain evoked some strong emotions so those two aren't going down as forgettable any time soon. =p Plenty of people eventually warmed up to Loghain as well once they read up some more on him. I laughed after the events of Trespasser. I wager Blackwall's stock value went up a bit more. =D

I liked him from the moment I met him, though it took me quite a while to decide to romance him--I'm a lesbian IRL and I had a stupid hangup about how I should show my appreciation for the inclusion of same-sex romances by choosing one. Stupid I know, but ultimately I had to admit that Thom was a much better romantic fit for my Inquisitor than either Sera or Josephine (neither of whom really made sense as a romantic partner for her, though she was friends with both of them).

I think way back when, I did see some comments on the forums from players who found him boring. I never thought he was, but for those who did, I expect Revelations was quite a surprise. ;)

Also, I really like how his relationships with other members of the Inner Circle change after the truth comes out. I had him and Dorian together in my party a lot because I'm really fond of both of them, and I was always sad at how they constantly quarreled. When they made up, I almost could've cried it made me so happy. (Yeah, I'm a sap. Whatever.) And Varric was kind of snippy with him earlier on, and becomes friendlier after Revelations. I can't remember exactly how the banter went, but Varric says something about having been too hard on Blackwall, and Blackwall is like, "So you don't think I'm dreadful?" and Varric says something like, "I thought you were boring before. We're all dreadful." Oh, and he and Cole get along a lot better, too. The biggest scare I got while romancing Thom was wandering around the Western Approach before Revelations with Cole in the party. Cole started to give what, in retrospect, was an account of how Thom had had Callier's children killed. But I didn't know what was going on at the time, and it really spooked me. Of course it was clear there was something in his past that was gnawing at him, but I didn't know what yet, and when I heard that, I was like, "Maker's balls, what did you do? What if it turns out to be something I can't forgive?"

On a related note, having very recently replayed Revelations, I was reminded of the fact that Sera's comments on Thom change if you talk to her during Revelations, and change again afterward. That's some attention to detail!

Well, that got a bit rambly. I really like companion banter. Can you tell?

I've heard him referred to as 'drywall' but I honestly never thought he was boring. I love him and his dirty laugh and his crude rough humour and his absolute devastation about falling in love with the inquisitor and what it means for him (and her).

I blame the banter bug for a lot of missed information and conversations. I think it's pretty much why iron Bull fell under the radar for me.

His romance was almost killed for me finding out his crime, because the killing of innocents is always shocking, I did have a visceral reaction to it. The thing is his crime was very personal, there was no greater good involved. He had only thoughts of making coin. How many Bioware romances have such a shocking personal revelation? It makes you think about whether you are happy to offer up compassion unconditionally or not. Ultimately, if your compassion wins out, his atonement is genuine, heartfelt and meaningful. And might I add beautiful. I've rethought the romanced Warden ending, whilst bittersweet it still as a beautiful poetic feel to it. Everything about him in Trespasser was perfect.

This and Sera's friendship is pretty goddamn awesome too. A couple of commoners finding a niche for themselves amongst the elite. Their banter is fabulous.

That was beautifully said, Bugsie! I love it.

I never found him boring either.  His comments.  His and Seras friendship.  The comments Cole makes about him/to him.  I thought he was crazy deep and interesting.  And I loved his humor.  My favorite party was him, Dorian and Sera.  The 3 of them together is an actual party   His laugh is AMAZING.

Okay, I'll stop gushing about him now

90% of the people I've seen call him boring immediately follow up that statement with "I never take him anywhere!"

well, that's why you find him boring genius

Dooooh, I had forgotten about his sister and the significance of flowers to him. I didn't even think of that. Good mention.

Edit: I saw a "this is what happens when you take too long to recruit Blackwall" video shared on tumblr. I thought it was from someone in this thread. I'm gonna have to dig back into my loooooong list of likes just to find the source again. The additional dialog was definitely new to me and worth sharing in this thread.

Edit 2: That didn't take as long as I thought, yay. Here's the link to the Blackwall video. Worth seeing: http://thievinghippo...adness-i-forgot

That's some interesting changes to the dialogue.  But I'll never get to see it personally, since I would never forget to recruit him before Haven is destroyed  ;)  Thanks for sharing, Gilsa!
