You may recover. One day. I've been scouring the Blackwall tag on tumblr and seeing some wonderful stuff I've never seen before. I don't usually browse the tags because asshats still don't know how to tag their hate. But that's something I rarely see.

I commissioned some art for my birthday (in August) from a really wonderfully talented artist. It took a while because the artist wasn't happy with the pose but I have been very patient and I think I will get it in the next day or two. It's not quite NSFW, perhaps a little risque, but if you would like to see I will link. Even the rough sketches had my heart racing with how lovely they were.

Oh, I'd love to see it!!

I also dropped the Blackwall tags from my tumblr search, too. I got tired of the critical posts mucking it up and to be honest, I've also had my fill of the "sad bear" Blackwall. Nothing wrong with it, just gets old for me.

I'd love to see it too, Bugsie!

I pretty much left Tumblr.  Too much "my character is better than yours and you're wrong for liking your character" there for me. :P

I found the global party barks and thought to share it here. Even with him in my party full time for two playthroughs, I never heard every single comment he had to say. The Val Royeaux ones were new to me. (Nobody in my party said anything in Val Royeaux actually.) Also included banters he participated in, even if he didn't initiate it.

The Bog
Blackwall: "Could this place be more damp?"
Blackwall: "It's so wet. Why haven't the dead rotted away?"
Blackwall: "Well, this is all very pleasant."
Blackwall: "I'll be glad when we get out of here."

Crestwood Lake
Blackwall: "Always liked lakes. Bet the fishing here was good. Before the Blight and Fade rift, anyway."
Blackwall: "What is it with Ferelden and the undead? Didn't Redcliffe have the same problem?"
Blackwall: "Lots of bandits in these parts. Can't blame them, I suppose. It's hard making a living these days."
Blackwall: "One thing about the Fereldan people? They're resilient. You'd almost have to be, living here."
Blackwall: "This wet cold just seeps into your bones, doesn't it?"

Dales Forest
Blackwall: "This is a nice change from Skyhold."
Blackwall: "It's sad to see Corypheus corrupting a place like this."
Blackwall: "Did you see those trees? They're gigantic."
Blackwall: "Is it just me or are the trees here watching us?"
Blackwall: "I passed through the Emerald Graves once, ten years ago. Nothing's changed in that time."

Highlands
Blackwall: "Colder than I expected."
Blackwall: "Pretty, but frigid. Reminds me of someone I used to know."
Blackwall: "Watch your step. Ice, everywhere."
Blackwall: "How did an entire river get frozen over?"
Blackwall: "What I wouldn't give for some warm spiced wine..."

Dales Plains
Blackwall: "Peaceful here, apart from all the destruction."
Blackwall: "I wonder if the elves will ever find a home."
Blackwall: "There's ... not much here, is there? Perhaps that's why it was given to the elves.  Says a lot about the ones doing the giving."
Blackwall: "I was always told to avoid the Dales. Something about Dalish curses. Not that I'm superstitious."
Blackwall: "I wonder what this all looked like before the war."

Varric: "Man, I can't wait for Chuckles to say something about the Veil."
Solas: "I don't always mention the Veil."
Blackwall: "Yes, you do."

Desert Ruins

Blackwall: "I've seen ruins like this all over Thedas. There's thousands out there. Some must have been bigger than proper cities like Denerim or Val Royeaux."
1) Vivienne: "(Chuckles.) It's charming, how you count Denerim as a city."
2) Solas: "Much bigger, I promise you."
3) Dorian: "You must be joking."
Blackwall: "Beg pardon?"
Dorian: "Visit Tevinter one day. Minrathous will put your southern cities in perspective."

Blackwall: "(Coughs.) Bloody sand. Getting in places where sand shouldn't ever be."
Blackwall: "Does the wind ever stop blowing?"
Blackwall: "I forgot how far you can see in the desert."
Blackwall: "We should keep moving. It'll keep the chill at bay."
Blackwall: "If you told me this place never ends, I'd believe you."

Varric: "Is it just me, or are those birds circling above us?"
Blackwall: "It's all the bodies we leave behind. You're the Maker's gift to anything that likes carrion."
Varric: "You sound like this one book critic in Rivain."

Sera: "Arse cakes!"
Sera: "Shh, shh, shhh! Wait for it."
Sera: "Aww, no echo?"
Blackwall: "So much for surprising anyone."

Dorian: "Does that noise ever stop?"
Blackwall: "It didn't the last nine times you asked."
Dorian: "'Persistence is its own reward.' That's a Tevinter proverb."

Blackwall: "That explains why you whine like a child."

Hinterlands

Blackwall: "The mage conflict has been hard on the people here."
Blackwall: "I've always liked Ferelden. It's a straightforward sort of place."
Blackwall: "If you ever go to Redcliffe's tavern, don't eat the cheese. Just ... don't."
Blackwall: "I tried to do what I can here, but with the Inquisition, I can do more."
Blackwall: "Hundreds of people have had their homes destroyed by the demons."

Oasis

Blackwall: "This sand just gets everywhere, doesn't it?"
Blackwall: "You know, one thing about abandoned mines? The tunnels deteriorate. Then collapse. And if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time ..."
Blackwall: "Eerily quiet here."

Storm Coast

Blackwall: "Ah, cold salt air."
Blackwall: "A hundred wrecked ships lie beneath these waters. It isn't called the Storm Coast for nothing."
Blackwall: "'An old salt now, that is what I am. As I sail these stormy waters.'"
Blackwall: "Ever heard of the pale ship that appears on the mists? The Windy Marcher -- I think that's what they called it."
Blackwall: "I always liked the sea."

Val Royeaux

Blackwall: "Never liked the city. Too many people."
Blackwall: "(Snorts.) Everyone's overdressed. Even the cakes are overdressed."
Blackwall: "Can't wait to get out of here."
Blackwall: "Was that woman wearing nugs on her head?"
Blackwall: "Didn't like this place the last time I was here. Still don't."

Western Approach

Blackwall: "I'd take even Val Royeaux over this."
Blackwall: "Next sandstorm we see? I'm naming it 'Gerard.'"
Blackwall: "Feels like there's sand in my lungs."
Blackwall: "I can't imagine what it must have been like for the Wardens who stood guard on the edge of this desolation."
Blackwall: "Bleak."

Inquisitor: "The Approach seems to be recovering from the old Blight."
Blackwall: "The Second blight took ninety years to put down. Without the Wardens, whole world might look like this. I pray I'm strong enough to survive the Joining when this is over."
Inquisitor: "You are. I know it."

Thanks for posting these, Gilsa, also the NPC comments! Blackwall also says this about the rift in the lake in Crestwood: "Does this mean there's water pouring into the Fade right now?"

Human 1: "Too good for him, if you ask me."
Human 2: "A warden no more. But he may as well have been. Where did you think they came from?"
Human 1: "I don't know! We only ever saw them when they were saving us."
Human 2: "No one wants to think about how the sausage is made."
Human 1: "What is that supposed to mean?"
Human 2: "You're tedious and I'm hungry."

I've heard a slightly different version of this one with Blackwall in my party. It went something like this (from the memory):

Human 2: He's right here, you could say it to his face.

Human 1: He is? Who let that animal into the city?

Human 2: *something about the Wardens having complicated lives before the Joining or something*

Then it continues with the sausage thing like in the one above. Funny thing is, I let him go free, so not sure why they brought up the Wardens.

I just did his quest on my secont playthrough and picked the "Was it true what they said?" option in the prison scene this time. The dialogue tug on my heartstrings like no tomorrow. "Did you really do those things? I don't want to believe you're a murderer." The quizzy sounded so shocked, like it hadn't sunk in yet. Gotta admire the writing and the voice acting in this scene (again).

I was looking around in the conversation branches in the ModManager. You know you can hear the lone elf complaining about cleaning up the gallows in Val Royeaux, right? Well, to my surprise, there's supposed to be a gallows scene that triggers once in Val Royeaux apart from Rainier's reveal. It's mostly just nobles acting like they're attending a sporting event and prisoners expressing varying levels of definance. One person in the crowd says, "So much less exciting than the Rainier reveal, no?" I have never seen this. I wonder if this is triggered by the war table only. The wedding in Val Royeaoux also an one-time event and I know that's a result of doing a specific war table mission.

If you'd like to read up more Blackwall stuff yourself, you can open up the ModMaker (via DAIToolsSuite) and navigate to Data > da3 > designcontent > conversations. Select a category (like Crestwood or Halamshiral, for example) and in the next window pane over, double click any entry that starts with "[Conversation]."

A separate window with a bunch of codes will pop up. From that drop down menu, click on "preview" and then you will see the conversation trees.

Do you all think Blackwall would still been a compelling character if the said he was a woodcutter instead of a warden? How would that play out?

@ Scuttlebut101

I took that dialogue option the first time I played Revelations. It was painfully obvious throughout the romance that Blackwall was ashamed of something in his past, but I still felt that the Inquisitor's first reaction to the truth would be denial. Of course she didn't want to believe it, even though I think she knew it must be true. When I replayed Revelations with the same Inquisitor recently, I chose "Did you have to lie?" instead. Also kind of a silly question, but I feel like it's the kind of obvious question a person might ask when they're struggling to come to grips with such a situation. His reasons for lying are obvious, but she's overwhelmed and doesn't know where to start, so she starts with the obvious question. Also, I really liked Blackwall's response to that one ("I never meant to lie to you, and when I did, I couldn't take it back"). This time around I also made a different choice on the following wheel, after Blackwall tells her he didn't intend for her to find him; the first time I'd chosen "As you really are?" and wasn't totally happy with it. This time around I took the middle option, "That's not better." ("You wanted me to think you left me? That you were dead or worse? You'd break my heart and call it better?" And Alix Wilton Regan's voice acting there is just beautiful, the combination of grief and anger really comes through.) Personally, I like the path I took the second time better, as I feel it better reflects what my Inquisitor was feeling, and also gives each party (her and Blackwall) a better idea of what the other one is thinking and feeling. For my Inquisitor, the deepest hurt was the thought that he would leave her to spend the rest of her life wondering where he'd gone, why, and what had happened to him. She shuddered to think of the toll that would have taken on her if Leliana's spies hadn't managed to track him down. Taking these conversation options allowed her to make him aware of how his actions made her feel, and in turn allowed her to understand better how it looked from his side (he was so sure that knowing the truth about him would hurt her even more than his unexplained disappearance). That airing of grief and grievances is very satisfying for me, though of course it's totally subjective.

@ Gilsa

Sorry if this was in your list and I just overlooked it somehow, but I've also heard this gossip in the main hall of Skyhold right after Revelations. I didn't notice who was speaking, and I didn't manage to screencap the whole thing, so the first couple lines may not be exact.

Person 1: Did you see the Warden?

Person 2: That was no Warden!

Person 1: Well, yes, that was the crime.

Person 2: No, it wasn't. The crime was far worse!

Person 1: You haven't seen the war reports.

So I finally did the redeemer Blackwall for a friendship judgement and it's soooooooooooooo much better for me than the romance version. Everything for me at least flows so much better it has a consistent tone. It feels much better. Also the line about the arrow coming from the rookery for a wee bit of levity at the end had me laugh so hard.

Sorry I've been away on holiday so I didn't get a chance to post the image - I'll post a link rather than an image - as I said, a little too risque for the forums.

Ciara Adaar and Thom Rainier (Art-by-g is the artist) it's NSFW-ish.

I also wrote a little ficlet to go with it (not posted here but you can read it on my blog if you want. I have a bit of running theme between Ciara and Blackwall involving apples, I took inspiration from 'La Pomme Vie et Morte' - the apples in Val Royeaux (which is why Ciara is offering him an apple). Especially the signs about the apples near the Cafe -

The apples nearest the cafe are said to change their taste depending on whether one is walking toward or away from the gallows. And of course they do, for taste is subject to the whims of the heart, and no meal is favored after tears. But dare it anyway, for none know the taste of joy such as we who do not shy from experience.

—From Our Orlesian Heart by (Formerly) Sister Laudine

And thanks for all those Blackwall tidbits Gilsa!!

Finally put up my new chapter (for any current readers): http://archiveofouro...apters/11340793

I've technically had it done for a month or two, but SW:TOR/Descent/Trespasser/MGSV got in the way (along with obsessive rewrites and editing :P ).

Ha yeah not that risqué compared to some of the fanart I've seen! But I usually err on the safe side here. And even on tumblr I'm usually cautious because I sometimes look at it at work, I've got most NSFW tagged just in case!

I think Sera sums up my feeling towards most fem qunari, they are well fit they are! Going to be hard to go back to playing human if they tighten the narrative arc for DA4, Ciara has to be my favourite OC ever. I think I spend a lot of time gawking at her too!

Blackwall thread, I have a question.  And perhaps a problem.

My latest Inquisitor was a serious ass to Blackwall over the Wardens (he has a chip on his shoulder about demons), and after Wicked Eyes I didn't trigger Revelations.  I'm guessing that between killing Celene, exiling the Wardens, and a few judgments, I have managed to tank Blackwall's approval.  I've finished the Memories of the Grey quest already, so I'm neither at Blackwall's crisis point, nor high enough approval to get his quest.

Are there any other significant opportunities for raising his approval besides killing random packs of darkspawn?  I like the character, but I don't want to muck about with Cheat Engine or spend hours farming darkspawn.

The only ones I know of are conversations with him in the barn - but if you're approval is really low it might not help and apparently if its so low after the first set of repairs to Skyhold, he'll leave.

Also certain non-main quests will get you approval, anything darkspawn related and the flowers for Senna quest in the Hinterland (as long as he's in your party).

But to quote Fitzwilliam Darcy "My temper would perhaps be called resentful. My good opinion once lost, is lost forever." I would say might sum Blackwall up  :P

Whoops.  *le sigh*  I don't think I've done Flowers for Senna yet, so I'll try that.  Thank you for answering :)

Ugh, this approval system.  I hate the awkward limbo where you get neither friendship nor disapproval dialogue.  I had Viv in that limbo for the longest time, and now Blackwall.

The only other thing I can recall offhand are judgments if you have any left to do.

I did have a game where I never could trigger the Haven dream scene with Solas or the card game with Varric and I thought I had worked diligently on those guys. Game was just bugged, I guess. It's possible you're in that same limbo. Do you have a save right before letting Celine die? What did you do with Briala? You can try loading up a save and let her die + Gaspard rules alone for two "greatly disapproves" in a row and see if that's enough to trigger the hostile conversation with him. (Alternatively, can try letting Celine live and see if that nudges him towards a more positive chat).

Four games and I've never had Vivienne give me the friendship or hostile cutscene. I swear I try! =p
