on your last romantic interaction with him and he invites you for a drink (it's just a normal drink, perhaps not even the first time he invited you, just to make the player unaware of what he's about to do), he could spike it with a sleeping drug and go off himself to the deep roads.

maybe leaving you with his most heartfelt last letter/will to the inquisitor before the end.

 

kinda like how alistair goes off to kill the archdemon, sacrificing himself instead of the warden.

The conversation choices could still be there   They could determine what he does.  If you break up he openly, but without ceremony, leaves for the Calling at the end, if you say "I'll miss you" he says a heartfelt goodbye when he leaves, if you say you want to go with him he misleads the Inquisitor, sneaks off without a goodbye and the Inquisitor finds a note from him later.

 

Still the element of choice!

 

Edit:  I don't need picture perfect happy endings all the time, but it'd be nice to have the option to have a semi-happy or fulfilling conclusion from time to time

I'm mostly a lurker in these forums, but I just finished my very first DA fan art, and since it's of our beloved Warden, I thought I'd share it. Enjoy
