No, Leliana was born in Orlais. Her mother was pregnant when she left Ferelden. But yeah, Leliana identifies herself as Ferelden.

Ahh, that's right. She was concieved in Ferelden :)

But she is fairly inconsistent about her nationality. All that talk of the game clearly makes her Orliasan, and her love of clothing is more Orliasan than Ferelden (who favor utility over style) adds to that. But she does repeatedly say she is Ferelden.

Honestly If you call her Orliasan you are correct, and if you call here Ferelden you are also correct.

If he was the 2nd most powerful Warden in all of Orlais 10 years ago, then he definitely should be 40+. I can't really see someone under 30 becoming Warden-Constable of Orlais. In Ferelden maybe, cause there were like 10 Wardens in Ferelden total. But Orlais has to have 100+ Wardens since they were never kicked out and should have been maintaining their numbers. He is probably the Warden-Commander of Orlais by now (In Calling it is hinted that W-C's have short tenures as they are typically fairly close to their calling by the time they reach the top), so that would add to the 40+ theory.

Blackwall must be close to the Calling then. I got to admit, this is gonna be interesting.

Do you think there could be a bit of Thane in Blackwall? His story revolving around him having only a few months to live, and making peace with it? I wouldn't be bothered by a recycled character concept, and it could be interesting to see that kind of character in Dragon Age. Rather than being quiet and somber like Thane, it would be cool if Blackwall is very merry and all "Live every moment like it's your last!"

I'm making way too many assumptions here, but I can't wait to meet Blackwall! Gonna miss his fan nicknames, though.

The Calling part will be interesting, but I'm more intrigued about the whole 'Warden-Constable' part.

We're not talking about a common Warden grunt joining the Inquisition, we're talking about the second in command of the Orlesian Wardens. Now it's even more interesting to know what made him to defect, since the letter in WoT and the picture that revealed his name (couldn't someone put it in the first post? or did I miss it?) make him look like a man who takes his responsibilities as a Warden very seriously.

In fact, so seriously (that grim look of him sells the deal, really) that his famous letter is an unintended source of hindsight humour.

Blackwall: "We must be ready to stare squarely into the eyes of oblivion!"

Warden: "Relax, pal, don't worry."

Blackwall: "What?! We can't relax! We're in the middle of a Blight!"

Warden: "Not anymore".

Blackwall: "I beg your pardon?"

Warden: "Killed the Archdemon already. Ferelden is saved".

Blackwall: "What? You stopped a Blight in less than a year?"

Warden: "I'm just that good".

I wonder if he met our Warden. He at least must have heard of him/her.

Honor?

Good sentiment and well-meaning, perhaps, but honor in terms of fulfilling obligation and agreements? I expect extreme chaffing at least- the sort of well-intentioned person who would take an apolitical force for one mission and turn it into a political actor so its resources can be used for another, immediate concern.

Remember his quote?

Being Warden is a promise to people. That is an idealistic phrase, reminds me of Wynne and Sten. Blackwall seems to take his role as a warden really seriously

Right. That indicates idealism, but not necessarily honor. Honor doesn't mean 'protect the weak.'

So your coutner argument that he isn't necesarily honourable, had nothing at all to do with honour, and as such you didn't even make a coutner-argument at all?

My point is that sounds very much like a man who honours his promises and word.

I have a feeling that is going to be his motivation for joining the Inquisition, regardless of whether or not he survives it. I have a feeling he is going to be close to his Calling and he is going to choose the Inquisitor's mission as his last hurrah. Consider that quote, "All a Warden is, is a promise. To protect others even at the cost of your own life." I have a feeling that quote is connected to Blackwall justifying his final mission being against demons rather than darkspawn.

Incorrect. My argument that he isn't necessarily honorable because the quote indicates a premise of idealism, not honor. The second sentence, that honor is not synonymous with defending the weak, is addressed to a common projection of what people believe honor to mean as a whole. Not an assertion of a position or quote of Blackwalls.

My point is that sounds very much like a man who honours his promises and word.

Nothing in the quote suggested he would honor his promises and words over the needs of others. Nothing suggests he wouldn't, mind you, but honor is a virtue demonstrated, not assumed by a lack of a disproof.

Blackwall's words of how being a Warden is a promise to protect othersis a projection on his part, not something inherent to actually being a Warden. He's pushing an interpretation that, while noble and idealistic, would come at odds with the obligations and vows of the institution of the Wardens (who are a one-purpose force against a specific threat that harms people, not a general purpose force to protect the people). Unless an organization has a stated commitment to protect the people from wide varieties of issues, it would be not actually be an honorable action to claim that they do. Especially when doing so could put the organization in violation of an actual, established obligation or promise (such as staying uninvolved and apolitical to other issues).

I would put my 2 cent over a "DAMN we are gray warden we protect people from Darkspawn why we shouldn't protect people from the denizen of fade!".

Basicaly the orlesian warden commander want to apply the standard wadren policy of not commitment over stuff not related to blight and darkspawn while Blacky wanted that GW took a more active role because ......THE SKY IS VOMITING DEMONS FOR ANDRASTE FLAMING ASS!

In Blackwall's defense, the events of DA:I are extraordinary and might require the Wardens not taking a passive role. Their being solely focused on the Blights has made quite a bit of sense in the past, but does it in an era where the world is threatened with destruction by demons? Presumably the threat the Inquisitor is dealing with is at least as dangerous as a Blight.
