Dear folks on here,
I am a bit baffled about this minerals surveying stuff.
How does it work? What is the system behind it? Can it that someone exaggerated a bit as far as this ridiculously short 10 seconds time limit is concerned? By the way, am playing this on the PC.

Basically you travel to different planets and find deposits of various minerals. You survey them via the small minigame you mentioned, and earn credits and XP for your trouble. Survey enough deposits (the exact amount is found in your journal entry: "UNC: Valuable Minerals"), and you'll earn a bonus when you import to Mass Effect 2.
