BioWare please don't make me want to throttle potential companions as soon as I meet them...

I agree and disagree with the OP.  Several playthroughs of mine have been absent of one or more potential companions.  The rationale of the warden largely determined who lived or died.

Some of my wardens have been more desperate than others and will accept most anyone who offers to kill darkspawn for them.  For example, my dwarf commoner Warden is a criminal and a murderer and was used to dealing with others like her.  She didn't particularly care if her companions tried to backstab her since she was on borrowed time anyway.  The companions might be a bunch of murdering scum, but they were her murdering scum and that was all that mattered.

Some have higher moral and ethical standards, or are simply more discerning in who they take with them.  The human noble Warden went the other way with obnoxious levels of nobility and justice.  Zeveran was dealt with and left to rot.  Nathaniel Howe became acquainted with the business end of a noose.

I see no problem with having companions who might provoke these reactions at first glance.  Strong personalities and motivations up front, please.

There is nothing at all to prevent zevran from killing you one day after you let him live, same thing with Howe, Sten, etc etc etc.

It's all up to you. Don't give them a reason to. That's my philosophy as well - when someone in my party has any problems I help them out and I never interfere with their ways and complete all their quests as they see fit, because I need them to help me with my goals afterwards. A good example of this is Zaeed from ME ( I'll assume you've played it ). He was after his personal revenge and I let innocent people die so that he would get it, because having his support was a lot more important to me, and my team always comes first and they are always happy with me.

But that only works with teammates that don't put their nose into MY decisions in the game, Zevran would be one of those. People that feel too strongly about some issues in the game are not really welcome in my party and THOSE are the people that I feel can backfire and that I try to avoid recruiting.

You can actually still earn his loyalty while saving the factory workers.

Or leave him to burn to death...Your choice.

But not completing the revenge aspect requires going out of you're way to actually talk him into being loyal.

Much better than either alternative.

That's metagaming. It's logical that he is going to support me if he is happy, not when he is denied what he wanted.

Well, I made that choice without reading the repercussions, so it wasn't metagaming to me. Plus I expect him to be loyal regardless considering he is being paid by Cerberus to serve under me.

<_< I'd just give him revenge personally, its a solid motivation piece for him to be loyal to shepard afterwards.

Well certainly he still goes on the mission, even if don't you even bother to try to complete his personal quest. It's just a big moral boost.

I will never condemn someone to be burned alive, and despise anyone who does.

''Realistically'' you don't have the luxury to express your opinion when galaxy fate is on the stake and you need the very best to help you preserve it.

Removing a War Criminal and terrorist from existence doesn't equal out to the few lives you can save if you let him escape?

It's about like the Balik argument i suppose.

The heck I don't. My ship, my rules. He's just a grizzled old mercenary veteran, not some crucial component like a genius scientist or an AI.

Every companion should be a pudding cup. Everybody loves pudding.  :)

Every companion is a crucial part, the very best in their sphere, or at least that's how the plot is supposed to work. If he didn't come out as a crucial part to the mission blame bioware writers, but he is supposed to be important, otherwise he shouldn't be on the ship.

Yeah, he is so crucial that he can be dead before the mission even starts and it still go off without a hitch.

He is as crucial as any other skilled soldier. Besides shooting things and leading soldiers, he isn't good for anything. You already have a few of those.

That said, overall I love that big guy. It's just that mission I hated his guts on.

Regardless, we are getting offtopic so better we drop this.

But Robin Saches was awesome in that role! And Zaeed doesn't get anywhere near enough love!  I nearly cried when i heard he died a bit before the Citadel DLC was released, given its his last imprint into a series, he admittedly didn't join until fairly late in but still found a nitch in.

This is a topic question: What would you do if you had to rely on someone very immoral to help you, and there really was no alternative and they were very crucial and you would 100% fail without them in some aspects and suffer heavy losses. Would you help them in their immoral quests?

Frankly I didn't even care at that point. The way I saw it, saving the workers mattered more to me than his loyalty.

Now, on the subject of companions like Sten and Nathaniel Howe, I like having characters that might make it hard to want to recruit in the beginning. If everyone was likable from the start, it wouldn't be all that interesting to see how they develop, should you choose to spare their lives.

Very unhealthy attitude for working with someone for a mutual goal.

Preferring to save people over one man's quest for revenge is unhealthy now? What a galaxy we live in.
