I agree and disagree with the OP. Several playthroughs of mine have been absent of one or more potential companions. The rationale of the warden largely determined who lived or died.
Some of my wardens have been more desperate than others and will accept most anyone who offers to kill darkspawn for them. For example, my dwarf commoner Warden is a criminal and a murderer and was used to dealing with others like her. She didn't particularly care if her companions tried to backstab her since she was on borrowed time anyway. The companions might be a bunch of murdering scum, but they were her murdering scum and that was all that mattered.
Some have higher moral and ethical standards, or are simply more discerning in who they take with them. The human noble Warden went the other way with obnoxious levels of nobility and justice. Zeveran was dealt with and left to rot. Nathaniel Howe became acquainted with the business end of a noose.
I see no problem with having companions who might provoke these reactions at first glance. Strong personalities and motivations up front, please.
