Varied NPC Bodies

Simply, for the sake of a more immersive world, I think it'd be great if NPCs (whether major or nameless) had more variety in their size and statures. Even if their bodies are preset, having 3 or 4 presets for a single race would be better than just one...

It was extremely disconcerting walking through the DA2 world knowing that as ordinary as any of the NPC men might have been, they all had the same body/stature as male Hawke. It seemed strange that even though he was presented as fairly helpless, the viscount seemed strong and robust physically. I think appearances can be an integral part of storytelling (and that seems to be important in the character design of followers for this iteration, e.g. Cassandra), so I think a bit of effort invested in more variation for NPCs can help the overall experience. If enough resources could be diverted to creating different gaits and walks and animations for NPCs that the PC interacts with often or in major ways, then that would be even better.

And though it is common sense, I think it needs to be stated that the majority of women (especially the caucasian women that dominate the DA world) do not have the bust size that was shown on the majority of female models in DA2. I expect there to be some pandering and fantasy, but seriously...moderation would be appreciated.

DA][ lacked differing body models for each gender amongst the races due to it having only a year long dev cycle, iirc. Since DAI is being developed for a longer period i doubt copy paste npcs would be numerous, even though the creation of dynamic body models seem like it's time consuming after you read some dev posts.

Origins suffered from copy-paste bodies, also.

Anyway, I'd like to see a bit more variation in body types for NPCs, if it's doable. With cutscenes though, it may be more trouble than it's worth.

They could just use certain armor sets that make characters look like they have different bodies. One of the robes in DA2 comes to mind. It made my dude Hawke look fat, as opposed to all muscly and whatnot.

Gosh I hated that robe

I remember Origins had a fat suit. The guy by the merchant guild board in Awakening looked the fattest.

Yeah, every male in Kirkwall being super trim and barrel-chested while every female was petite-waisted and GG-cup was kind of ridiculous.

Mike Laidlaw has already said this is not the case.

Only male and female body types for each race - nothing more.

He said that about the Inquisitor though. For NPCs, they may have the two different types like they had in Origins.

Honestly, I don't think this is asking for much...Having more than one model for NPCs and preferably having the NPCs not be physically the same as the Inquisitor seems reasonable enough. If they are going to put in a niche aesthetic detail like having armor rust over time for some sake of novelty realism in a fantasy setting, then having everyone not be physical clones seems like something plausible to check off. It's not that every NPC has to be unique...but a few variations will make it stand out much, much less.

Wasn't that diverse though. It was restricted to male gender only, and how many of those models did we even see anyway? I think only 2.

Just once I'd like to run into an old woman in a Bioware game and not have to see her enormous, perfectly round breasts.

True, but at one point we were also told we could only play as human :wizard:

I seem to remember a chubbier looking woman as well, during the meteor baby encounter.

In DA2, you also had the crowd filler... people. I hesitate to call them NPCs, more like furniture They didn't have chiseled physiques or magical bosoms. Or eyebrows.

Ideally there would be less heroic models for commoners, but failing that, as previously stated, a lot can be archieved with different outfits. Gamlen's attire for example wasn't exactly flattering.

That was DLC content though, I thought. Where you get the metal for the star sword at Vigil's Keep or something like that. Not everyone had it.

also, 1 woman and 3 men, not much of a breakthrough. I'd rather have no change in body type than only 3 or 4 character models throughout the entire game.

Good point. And it was Warden's Keep. Vigil's Keep is the keep in Awakening.

Arl Eamon's cook in his Denerim estate was also an obese woman.

But yeah, they're few and far between, mostly background NPCs. I suppose Lloyd had the biggest role. Followed closely by the Fereldan refugee whose eggplant supplied half the bastards in South Reach.

This is actually a pretty nice idea.

It would definately add immersion to the world and provide a nice variation.

And with that, I am hoping for a short, big lady somewhere in the game, with the same attitude as Mrs. Chu.

In general Bioware always lacked the body variety...... man, the female body sure was painful to see. You see macho men that looked like they took anabolics (even non soldier ones) and bony women that had body which didn't fit the soldier/warrior image and etc.

Except DA2, which oddly did a good job in comparison to other bioware games, though there was the boob issue too. :P

I agree with the OP, not only I want to see some variation in NPC's but to players/companions as well. I'm sure it'll take much more work though.

is fantastic.

I have nothing against varied body types, but I think this should be low priority, next to animated hair and bowstring pedantry.

Not true. In both Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter nights 2 not only did NPCs have vastly different body types but it was possible to completely customize your character's body structure. Neverwinter nights yes was a much older game of very poor graphical quality but NWN 2 wasn't. A more recent example can be found in Star wars: The old Republic. While bodies for the character are not FULLY customizeable there are four body types for each gender and race and the NPCs scattered throughout show variety with those shapes.

That being said, all of those are on vastly different engines than DA:I's frostbite. While I feel that this would be a WONDERFUL thing to see, I understand that there may be limitations.

Well Dragon's Dogma had a good variety of body types, why can't Dragon Age. :P "Because resources" "because time" "because low priority" BAH. Shhhh. Shush now.

So much for a next gen game, you really ought not to call it that if mmos have a technical visual feature that you don't

'Next-gen' doesn't mean 'unlimited resources'. Some things take higher priority than a new fat body for nobles or whatever.

And SWTOR had a massive budget, if that's the MMO you're talking about. Far higher a budget than one would think, given how... controversial the game's quality is.
