I dont get it how, so many people do not get the point. By button mashing i mean combat like Skyrim, where every click is a hit. I dont mean button mashing like a too simple combat, or mindless bashing on your keyboard like when you play fighter games for the first time.
Are you auto attack guy, or do you prefer one click - one blow ?

As I keep emphasizing, in a CRPG (at least as I see it; of course, that is the constant proviso), it's the character that's doing the attacking, not me (the player).
All I'm indicating is who he needs to auto-attack (if I'm not using a particular ability), he can take care of the rest, including attacking again and again until the enemy is dead. Why on Earth should I need to keep pushing a button? The character already knows his target. This is not Diablo, and thank the stars for that! (I play Diablo III, just as I played Dungeon Siege, but boy oh boy I would give my right arm if somebody could come up with an auto-attack mod for it. At least in Dungeon Siege everything in your party auto-attacks like the Energizer Bunny on steroids.)
Some people may find that too slow, too boring, too whatever; I find it .... just right. ![]()
Anyway, this is one toggle we know is there, and confirmed: auto-attack for those who want it, like me, button mashing for the action-rpgers.
Oh, and who knows whether I am in a minority or not, but no, Origins combat was not too slow. ![]()

It depends, but I really loved Dragon Age 2's combat system. Felt more dynamic and faster for me.

As a mage, I'd prefer to blow guy... wait, what are we talking about?
Yeah, enter combo would make the game a lot less autonomic and routine. Auto-attacking is just a bit lazy for me.

It's not lazy for me, because while one character is auto-attacking (or more than one, as the case may be), I'm usually focusing on another character, and controlling their actions/abilities. ![]()
I'm always doing something - that something usually being, well, something. ![]()
Having to repeatedly push a button simply switches automation to the player's autonomic nervous system; I am not a robot. ![]()

I am glad there will be a toggle to please all concerned. I see auto attacking as a continuation of the what I expect the character to do until I tell him/her otherwise.Constant mashing of the buttons may give some the perception of weight behind the attacks I simply know that character is not going to hit any harder than if I have the character auto attack. Auto Attack frees me up to focus on other parts of the battle.

I guess it depends on peoples playstyle. For me, DA is a squad level tactical combat game. I don't ever use just one character and let the AI control the rest. I pause after each and every spell/action. I change characters every couple of seconds to re-issue new orders. My combats are about as turn-based as you can make it with tactical pausing.
So the auto attack is generally needed to fill in the gaps between character cycling. When you play as a squad instead of as a character, the 'twitch' combat isn't very useful.

I repeat "Auto attack toggle" only really applies for the character you are controlling. Your other party members have always had this built into their ai and tactics options and I doubt there will be any change in this regard at all.
What it means, is that for the character you are controlling, if you attack something (probably any targetting ability although could be basic attack only), you will then continue to basic attack it until you tell your character to do something else.
I'm unclear what will happen if your target moves, do you automatically follow if out of range or line of sight?
Personally I think the whole issue is overblown, it just simply isn't all that important assuming you will normally want to use your special abilities/spells rather than a basic attack. I don't care that it is in, but I wouldn't care if it was left out.

Glad it's a toggle; I don't remember if the PC version of DA2 had such a thing.

Concur, as we already know at this point that both modes are available.
There may be other 'features' of combat that may end up being more divisive, but this one won't be.
In any case, I was asked my opinion: so I gave it. ![]()

I like that DA:2 didn't have auto attacks, it made me feel more involved in combat. I'm glad we can toggle it though, I'll probably turn it on when I want to focus more on strategy than mashing (Most likely during difficult boss fights).

I tend to press the button anyway so it doesn't really matter all that much.

I know I'm more of a button mash, or direct control as I call it, kind of player. I feel it adds a level of strategy, giving me the ability to plan out my attacks and angle them well, as well as being able to break off, pull back, and then jump back in much easier.

Auto.Tell party what to do and if I'm right I win. Button mash is really boring, with the unending slow waves in Kirkwall I could feel eyelids start to drop.

here is the problem if there is only 1 attack, there is no point to button mash because the end result will always be the same,
now before anyone says "skyrim was that way" it accutly wasn't. you could block with a sword you could also interupt an attack with a bash with your sword while blocking so there was stratagy with it.
if it was more like DMC type combat then i'm completly down with button mashing because there is a stratagy to it all.
but from what i have seen it seems to have more of a guild wars 2 vibe to the game.

The only real irritation about DA2 wasn't the button mashing, it was the fact everyone and their brother seemed to have a hundred thousand HP.

Well... you're in luck - The devs have already said autoattack will be a toggle in DAI.
At risk of sounding sickeningly tacky: Praise the Maker. I'm awful at using M+KB in third-person action games.
