Naleena walked to the comm terminal in the CIC and opened an encrypted secure communications channel to the Medusa and sent a message.
“Capt. Jess Stone,
We have completed our mission on Omega and are headed to The Citadel. Meet us there. Use Spectre Authorization #4A399NT2 if they give you any trouble with docking your ship.
Naleena” (OOC NOTE TO Redbelle: the Medusa will receive this message in a while)
Molly was still in the port-side observation lounge sitting on the couch with her data pad going over correspondence and some files. Naleena entered with an out of sorts look on her face.
"It's done," Naleena said as she walked to the portal and looked out at the station, and paused in silence for a moment. "You were lucky you remained aboard. I would not need yet another death on my conscience."
"Well, from what I read on the screens, I don't know if I understand exactly what went on," Molly regretfully responded. "Your captain closed the window armor screens during the mission, so I saw nothing."
In truth, Molly was having a hard time wrapping her head around the numbers she was hearing. She didn't want to think about it, but there was a heaviness in the air.
"In fact, I'm probably the one person on this ship who knows the least of what happened...but I'm not asking, either. Not if its something I shouldn't be aware of."
Naleena turned to face her. "This is what will be on the news: There was a major battle on Omega. Aria T'loak maintained her iron grip on the controls of the station. Officially, we were never here because the Council cannot get its hands dirty in the Terminus.
"Have you given any thought to what we discussed? About working as part of my team? Of course this is a temporary assignment until my own investigation is complete, but you'll have Council resources throughout. C-sec will be out of the loop. The Council expects this to be a long term assignment for me. You'll work autonomously. However, like C-sec, I expect reports."
"You have no idea how much paperwork I can send your way," Molly said with a shallow smirk before it disappeared. She took her own turn looking out the window at Omega. "The answer is obvious, as much as I dislike it. Don't take it personally, but I never wanted to work for a Spectre." Molly didn't know a good way to put it.
"I have to accept. I have to. I'm cut off by my own people and I need the resources while operating separately from them. Expect trouble if you really mean this, though. Maybe it's an empty fear, but my gut tells me there's more to this than meets the eye. A lot more. I need to talk to your people. I need to start finding pieces and putting them together. And it may take me a while to do. I can help with other things along the way, but for getting to this person...with all the available information in hand, well, I'm going to do it. But it is going to take everything I've got, and every lead I can chase."
Naleena sat in the chair adjacent to the couch Molly was seated. She leaned over with her elbows on her knees and put her hands together with her index and middle fingers outstretched and her ring and little fingers interlaced, and smiled at Molly. "I never thought this would be easy. Have you worked with VERA about getting the copies of your case files before they lock you out of them? I know you may feel a bit uneasy about an AI, but you can trust her. And of course you'll have access to my people. You're part of the team, and I'll introduce you a new member of the team. There are some key people whom you'll want to interview, and others whom you don't need to interview."
"Meanwhile, I'll draft a letter to my supervisor requesting your reassignment. Once you have all the information you need, and VERA's wiped all traces of your electronic visit, I'll send the letter. And one more thing, I have to return to The Citadel. One of my commandos needs to be taken to Huerta Memorial for further treatment."
Molly frowned. "I don't trust your AI and I won't. But I'll work with it as you ask, and I have nothing to hide from you. Maybe you don't get to wear the white hat in your job. Maybe you have to deal in shades of gray. But you don't have to with this. I'll find the bad guy, and we can bring her down together.
Her hands jammed into her raincoat pockets, Hagen admitted, "We're probably not going to make a lot of friends doing this, though. But from my experience, sometimes nothing beats being able to sleep at night."
Naleena saw that Molly was a white knight, and in her business that could be trouble with certain people. She knew how few friends she had, and she didn't want any negative calls from them. "Just one thing, if you need anything from Aria, let me know, and I'll speak with her. You don't need another black eye. Well, I have to tell the commander make sure everyone is aboard, and get to work on that letter," she said, stood, then turned and looked into Molly's eyes. "And with VERA, please be nice to her."
"Right." The detective looked skeptically at Naleena. "I'll be...nice to the computer."
Molly's brown eyes showed momentary caution as she looked to Naleena. Then they gave way to agreement. She nodded and said, "And...I really don't want to see Aria again."
"I should get going. They'll be serving lunch in the wardroom soon," Naleena said, "Feel free to get something to eat or you can have someone bring up a tray for you."
Naleena left to take care of other business aboard the ship.
