Armali Raceway

Irina pulled into Cascian’s area of the pit and dismounted, took off her helmet and shook out her sweaty hair. Alisa congratulated her then moved her bike into the portable garage they’d set up when she saw her father walking toward them.

“Here it comes,” Alisa said.

Marcus was happy to be moving onto the next race, yet he wasn’t happy. “Nice race, but what the hell was that stunt? That crap may fly on Duellos, but this is Thessia and the Armali Raceway! You don’t just do a burn to get by a racer here. You use strategy and tactics. I was giving you my best lines.”

Irina’s smile turned to a crease between her eyes. “Well they weren’t good enough!” she shot back. “I want my VI back. That b*tch had eyes in the back of her head better than any mirrors. She must have had proximity sensors, otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to block me and the rest of the field on that straight and on every single turn. I had them on that VI.”

Marcus sighed. “I took the VI off because of weight,” he said shoulders dropping. “They have them in their helmets. This is the best human fitting helmet I could get on short notice. Humans just aren’t as into jet bike racing as Asari.”

“What about an Asari helmet?”

“Not legal for you,” he said. “There’s a gap for their crest. It’ll be too loose.”

“Not of we pack it with foam,” Irina countered and watched Marcus hesitating. “Come on! I won’t stand a chance without one.”

Marcus put his hand on Irina’s shoulder. “Look, I like you. Honestly, I’m doing this as a favor for Septerax. We go back a few years. My daughter was going to try to do this on her own with the crew. She knows the mechanics, but not the strategy,” he said. “You have a lot of competitive spirit. You barely qualified for this. The top ten from last year will be returning, and then the top five from each of the four heats for the 50 lap main singles event. You’ll need to finish in the top ten just to pay for the helmet. Are you sure?”

Irina replied without hesitation. “Do it. If it allows me to run a clean race, do it. Just remember, Cascian, in my profession, I could be dead tomorrow.”

“I’ll make the arrangements. Meanwhile, go back to your hotel and shower. Relax for the rest of the day,” Marcus said, turned, and started tapping his omni-tool.

~~

Irina changed out of her racing leathers, grabbed a sports drink, and made her way up to the spectator area taking a seat next to Jenus. Tallis stood and gave Irina a high five.

"Yes, well, oh Goddess...," the maiden in front of Anika started.  She oddly didn't seem to see Anika coming, probably the only person, as the maiden was so attentive to her own dilemma that somehow she missed a seven foot tall woman in white standing over her, shadow and all.  Anika saw the maiden emotionally pained in her trouble, trying to pile the equipment any which way it would fit, now that the precarious stacks she'd been holding had been destroyed.  "I should, I know, have gotten myself a case, or a personal grav luggage carrier.  They're all out with the races...well, it's my fault, I shouldn't have...but I'm in a rush!"

It was at that point the maiden thought to look up, noticing at first that there wasn't a crowd shoving into her, and then wondering why.  Peering back up at Anika was a cherub face, in both its innocence and gorgeous features, with smooth light blue skin and green eyes.  Well, she would have been gorgeous, if it wasn't for the one piece dress that did as bad a job as possible in showing any of the maiden's redeeming features.  Nor did she have on any makeup, or fingernail polish, or anything at all that would enhance her look.  In apparent nervousness, the maiden had broken a sweat too, and she rubbed the back of her neck while looking up.

"Forgive me, my name is Ysha'na," the maiden apologized and blundered her introduction.  She spotted the datapad in Anika's hand and blurted, "Oh Goddess that's the most important one!"  Ysha'na got to her feet quickly and Anika heard a tearing sound.

One of the corners of a piece of equipment had very unfortunately caught the unflattering dress and was heavy enough to pull down and tear it as Ysha'na stood.  It wasn't a large rip, maybe five to seven centemeters long, but it was certainly noticeable, on the side of the maiden's leg.

"No!" Ysha'na exclaimed.  She forgot about the datapad to look at the tear, the obvious futile hope that it wasn't as bad as it sounded or seemed.  "Oh, no..." Ysha'na said as she finally inspected the tear.  When she peered back up at Anika to take the pad, Ysha'na looked like she was about to cry.

"Sloane...you are certainly surprising." Essul said to himself as he watched the conclusion of the race on his omnitool, able to catch the stream on it quite well as he shut it down. Above him the birds were chirping, the wind blew through the forested park of thessia Essul found himself in as he leaned against one of the railings, staring out into the vast city-space that stretched out here.

This park, he didn't know the name of. It was a rather large patch of nature that he could tell was artificially maintained. Nothing grew in perfect squares, and the way everything looked from the flower arrangements to the leaves of the trees had been done for aesthetics, just an aesthetic that would make it look pleasantly natural. Still, it was a nice change of pace from being in a ship all day, the lack of an engine hum, the smell of unrecycled air, and being able to simply smell the scent of grass and dirt made him happy.

Essul looked down to the ground, some tuffs of wild grass creeping up from the metallic sidewalk, giving a small bit of wild and untamed bit of rebellion that made him chuckle. "Even here, huh?" He asked to no one as he bent down, reaching with his hand to grab a bit of it, roll it between his finger tips. He felt nothing, none of the texture, if it was wet or dry, how warm or cold it was, nothing but a dull sense of tension. Same as anything he touched, and the thought made him sigh as he went back to staring out into space.

To Essul, the quiet moments were what he enjoyed most. Just enjoying something like this, something natural that didn't need a place to fit or a purpose to play. Something he didn't have the luxury to have. To him, that was what he enjoyed.

Anika looked at Ysha'na for a moment before her gaze softened.

"Tell you what. Let's get your gear together. Then I'll help you carry it. Your heading into the hotel, right"? Anika put motion to word and dropped to begin quickly gathering up the equipment in a pile into a stack that she took hold of and lifted up. Turning slightly so Anika could see her, she inclined her head in a motion to the door. "In? Or are you heading to the transport rank"?

At the hotel lobby

The race must have been very exciting to watch, especially the close outcome after the head-to-head-duel between the human newcomer and the asari rider. But Arian had no idea what had happened as he had spent a good time of the race dozing on one of the comfortable seats in the waiting area of the hotel lobby. Relatively small screens showed a live broadcast of the race and many people stopped on their way through the lobby to have a look at the current standings of the race or maybe see something spectacular. But most of them didn't stay long as the noise inside the lobby and the low size of the screens were hardly creating an atmosphere that would make watching this event enjoyable in any way. At least for racing fans.

Arian actually hadn't planned to watch the whole race but after taking a seat on one of the very comfortable chairs and staring at the screen for a while, the fatigue of the past few weeks had finally caught up with him, causing him to miss the rest of the event. After this short sleep, he didn't feel much better but at least it meant that another couple of hours had passed. The sooner this vacation was over and he could get back to the mission the better.

While he was rubbing his eyes and tried to suppress a yawn, he heard muffled giggling to his right. Arian turned to see what was going on and spotted two asari who were standing close to him and were struggling to hold back loud laughter. It seemed they found it very amusing to see a turian sleeping on a chair in the hotel lobby. Their problem was that they didn't turn away quick enough when Arian glared in their direction.

"You have a problem?", he snapped at them and it was like their good mood was gone immediately. They quickly turned around and left in a hurry.

With a grunt Arian turned his attention back to the screen to see if there was still anything interesting to see but the race was already over. The expert talking that very often followed such events would probably cause him to fall asleep again so Arian wanted to get up from his chair when suddenly the name Irina Sloane popped up. He needed a second to remember that Sloane was Irina's last name and then he realized this human newcomer was actually someone from his team.

I guess at least someone is having fun here..., Arian thought to himself.

The maiden named Ysha'na

"Yes," Ysha'na said, wiping away tears.  "I'm...sorry.  I mean, I have to leave these at the desk, and then I have to go line up on the rank to catch a transport back to meet my employer.  It's....it's my first day on the job.  I'm a wreck."

Ysha'na sure looked it.  She hadn't lost all of her tears and was nervous.  "It's that I really need this job.  And, I don't know them well yet but the company is demanding.  I mean I want to do everything right, and this is turning out to be one of my worst days ever."  Ysha'na fumbled with the equipment she was carrying, but didn't drop anything this time, with Anika's help.  Ysha'na started for the doors, walking in a clutsy sort of way, but briskly, assuming Anika would follow.  "I can't believe I ripped my dress on top of everything.  I'd curse my luck but, well, I guess I shouldnt' that much since you're saving me a lot of trouble.  Really, you are!"

At the desk, the concierge did not look impressed as Ysha'na went straight to an empty spot along the counter and started laying her items on it.  However, the concierge took one look at Anika, and made a quick decision that handling things politely was in everyone's best interest.  She came down.  "May I help you?" The concierge asked.

"Yes!" Ysha'na blurted.  This is all for a presentation in a breakout room up on the second floor.  The company name is Prestige Financial, they're backing racers."

The concierge typed up a menu on her display.  She paused, looked and typed again.  "I'm sorry, I don't have Prestige...hold on, you have someone who called here requesting the room and..."

"That was me.  I had called and I was told the rooms were all being used, but I was trying to explain to whoever I spoke to that the items were for the sponsor who was supposed to be doing a presentation."

"Yes, I see notes here.  We don't have a confirmation however."  The concierge looked up at Anika, a bit concerned, then down at Ysha'na.

Ysha'na's face dropped another two shades into the pale.  "You're serious?"

"Yes, I'm afraid,"  the concierge replied, then after looking at Anika again, offered, "Maybe I can speak with a manager."

"I have to go get my employer, and I'm already late!"  Ysha'na warbled slightly with her words.  "She can clear everything up, I swear!"

An asari that did very much look like a manager, gave a hard stare at the concierge as the flood of guests was demanding.

"Here, leave these with me," the concierge finally said.  We'll put them in the storeroom under your company name.  Go ahead and get your employer, then we can clear things up."  She put on a friendly, but very fake smile.

"Thank you so much!"  Ysha'na was momentarily thrilled as she stepped away from the counter, profusely appreciating the concierge once more. Ysha'na had gotten about five steps when she halted in another bout of nervousness and looked up at Anika.  "My employer is going to kill me."

Anika looked from Ysaha'na, to the concierge, then back to Ysha'na and held up a finger.

"One moment".

Stepping up to the counter, Anika looked down at the person behind the counter. Then looking left and right, saw a touch padd mounted into the wooden surface of the counter top and reached out to press her thumb against the surface. It lit up and a tiny bell sounded as it did as Anika took her thumb away and looked at the concierge. Her face expressionless.

"Receipt".

With an embarrassed look that Anika began wondering didn't account for at least half her expressions in life, Ysha'na said, "Of course!  Of course, thank you."

The awkward click of Ysha'na's low heels was prominent on the ears as she tried to explain to Anika while they walked to the transports.  "I'm really sorry again, I hope I haven't put you out and you've been a huge help!  There's too much for me to do alone, I supposed.  I should really switch jobs but I haven't gotten the chance."  Ysha'na was still clearly nervous as she began rambling.  She didn't sound like she had a handle on things at all, but Ysha'na, for all her cloddiness, had a sort of determination or need about her that gave her an endearing quality.  And that was what shone through the plain clothes an unfrilled appearance.  She must have noticed Anika's attention as Ysha'na smiled sweetly while she jittered on.

They got to the transport line, which was rather short.  Boarding was delayed a couple of minutes.  Ysha'na looked at the transport with what might have been another nervous look because of the delay, but was more likely because of what was to come.  Her eyes were large and Ysha'na confirmed Anika's suspicions when she spoke again.  "I suppose I have to say good-bye."  It was fairly clear Ysha'na didn't want to.  She put a hand on her perspiring neck.  "I...it wouldn't be appropriate if I...no.  I have to say thank you."

Anika swore the maiden was too much of a bundle of nerves to come out with asking her to come along, but it didn't take a genius to figure out that's what Ysha'na wanted.

Janiri - Vanye and VERA - continuation of their conversation (JB & SJ)

“So this ship always being in space or in a port rules out me locking your cabin, making the call, and making a bundle of credits,” VERA said with a sigh. “....That was a joke.”

VERA took another drag off her cigarette. “What would it take to make this hunt go away?”

“Funny...” vayne said, not sounding too amused by the joke.

“Well...a krogan hunt can only be called off if I'm dead, or if the person who placed it was killed...” Vayne said as he looked off towards the door, “Thing is, we're not dealing with some random krogan warlord. This is a high ranking member of one of the largest mercenary corps in the galaxy. We'd have to fight our way through them all, to even get close to Slayt.”

“And, even baring that...the hunt makes it clear anyone who continues to help me gets added as a side bounty. Your friends...your family, hunted until you're dead....” vayne said as he let out a sigh, smirking grimly as he did so.

“You said my survival rate would drop if I left...well, truth be told...I'd rather it drop to 0 then see more people die because of me...dying for me to live...”

“Your presence has also contributed to our teams probability of surviving dangerous situations. If you were to leave, the chances of our surviving our next encounter would also be less. You have friends here, Vayne. I would miss you,” VERA replied. “Perhaps it might help if you told me where Ganar Slayt is located?”

“It's been mostly rumors. Slayts not as well-known as his brothers. Rumors I have heard aren't good...” he said with a frown as he said so, “Rumor has it...he's on Garvug.”

VERA cocked her head. “Garvug? The planet is still in the midst of a civil war. While the so-called peace presence of the Cerberus funded group has been completely displaced, Hailot Wrund has managed to survive and maintains control over a portion of the planet. Sonax and Guanghui Corporate mercenaries now control the rest of the planet. There have been reports of chemical weapons use by Sonax and Guanghui. Mass executions of insurgent sympathizers. However, Sonax, Guanghui, and Binary Helix, due to falling revenues and the cost of the war have decided to begin a withdrawal from Garvug. Hailot Wrund has been leading a guerilla war with some success.

“How would the Slayts fit into something like this?”

“Simple. It's a planet wide war, with everyone looking to undermine and kill each other. The situation from what I hear, is that now that those 3 asses are moving out, there's more then just Wrund that's trying to move in...” Vayne said, wishing he had a smoke right about now.

“Rumor has it that the blood pack got contracted out to help Wrund's war effort. Top credit for the toughest of the tough, and plenty more on the side for anyone to pay to not have them show up at raids or battles. The big rumor, is that Slayt is leading his personal unit out there. The Blackguard.” He said, knowing Vera would probably not pick up on it just yet.

“They're the toughest, meanest, and craziest of the Blood Pack. Senior war party leaders and soldiers, all of them decked in Black Armor, and bearing a Red Blood Pack Emblem.” Vayne said as he looked down to the ground, “You haven't seen brutality, until you've seen the Blackguard fight.”

“Do you have any estimate as to their unit strength?” VERA inquired.

“No. I always did my best to avoid them, what rare instances I did find myself on a job where they were involved. What I do know, is they tend to have gear most never see. Heavy weapons and thick armor.” Vayne said as he looked to his weapons locker, “Stuff like thwt shotgun pistol...heavily modified gear. I do know they tend to be infantry.”

“I should point out that our boss has done favors for other team members such as Morgan Severn in the past,” VERA said. “If this hunt will persist and threaten others who are around you, perhaps it would be advantageous to use the chaos on Garvug to our advantage and eliminate your 'problem?' Sonax has reduced them to fighting a guerilla war. It would only be a matter of finding them.”

“You sure she'd go for this? Busting up some cults and infiltration's one thing...this, this' d be a war.” Vayne said, knowing from the experience on omega that this had the potential to go bad, fast. “Blood Pack's practically an army. We're a ship that's worth more then most brigades but...We're still just 1 ship.”

VERA took another sip of her martini and looked at Vayne. “You said that getting to Ganar Slayt is the problem and that you have no love for the Blood Pack, is that correct? If that is the case eliminating Ganar Slayt would be the logical way to accomplish that,” she said. “This ship is capable of atmospheric flight and has a thanix cannon for main gun. I can assure you that it can weaken any resistance significantly. If anything a single use will cause the survivors to spread out. Whether or not the boss will opt to use it in such a manner is another matter. However, the option is there.”

“It's not just about killing him. He has to call it off, or it doesn't stop...” vayne ssid, wishing it were so simple as a carpet bomb.

“Krogan Hunts last until either the hunter gives up, or the pray is dead. Even in death, it doesn't stop. Killing the hunter just makes the bounty all the higher. If we're gonna do this...we're gonna have to force him to stop”

“That will require thinking outside of the box,” VERA replied.

Anika looked at Ysha'na and saw in her an Asari in need. And perhaps.....

"Actually, perhaps we're going the same way. I'm new on world and...". Anika stopped and sighed. "...Aaaaand I could use a guide... But I don't want you to feel like you owe me for earlier. It's standard practice where I'm from to help a colleague. Check your gear. Get it logged in the system". She stopped.

"If you want, I could, tag along. As far as your going. If you want".

"Wonderful!" Ysha'na exuded and beamed, her beauty cracking its shell briefly before a certain worry crept back in.  "Well, I mean, I do owe you but I understand.  You are the kind of person who doesn't want people to do things out of obligation.  That's nice.  I wish I could be that way."

In minutes, Ysha'na and Anika were on the transport, open to the city around them with large windows on either side.  "Five stops, that's to the I'thanis district, all corporate parks and everything boring around them.  Don't be surprised if it seems a little dead.   Most everyone is attending one event or another regarding the races, or taking the time off anyway since nothing much can get done."

The transport itself seemed to be lightly populated, heading against the traffic heading to the Speedway.  It was easy for Anika to take a couple of seats to herself while leaving room for Ysha'na next to her.  The maiden insisted Anika be by the window so she could get a good look around.  Seconds into the trip, Ysha'na felt the need to nervously explain.  "I have a sister on Illium.  You'd think she'd know better than to get herself involved in some contract without reading all the fine print or hiring a lawyer.  It's, well, I need of course to help her out and this job is how I'm doing it.  I need it, and I wouldn't feel so pressured if she didn't have to rely on me.  Just the two of us, we have to stick together."

With a guilty sort of expression, Ysha'na said, "We can meet my employer, and I don't know what she has planned.  I would be happy to show you around.  Not everything is the races, of course.  There's an amazing snack shop by us, outdoor, sit down and enjoy the weather place.  Oh, and while the district has nothing much, there is more entertainment on a pier within walking distance."  Rolling her eyes with regret, Ysha'na said, "I...I wish I didn't have to be so prompt.  I'd love to just, well, I'd just love to forget I even had a job to do today.  Sometimes, you just want to escape, do you know how I feel?"

Anika's attention was rapt to what was sliding by outside the window as she heard Ysha'na finish speaking.

"Escape?... I know the feeling alright. I came from... Well I'll say it was a big family. I had sisters. We weren't related but we all had a connection I suppose. The difference was we had a big parent that gave alot and demanded everything from us. Not at first of course. Our parents had to build us up and it got to a point where I just knew I had to leave or something bad would happen".

Looking around at Ysah'na Anika smiled tightly. "Sorry, didn't mean to burden you with my past. It's just... I wish I hadn't just left. I wanted all of us to leave when I did but my exit only had room for one. But I'll say this. If you think what your doing is hard now, then just leaving a sister behind... Well in the moment you might not notice but after awhile... You'll wish you could have found another way. Don't be sorry your helping sister. She's a part of your life. And you can't leave behind a part of your life and not pay something for it later".

With that Anika shrugged. "And not to tell you your business but work now means more play later. There's time to see these places if you would show me later".

Frank

"Excuse me, but do you happen to know that racer?"

"Yup." Frank responded, completely oblivious to who had just asked the question, as he checked a message on his omni-tool. "Ain't known her real long, though. You'll have to ask her if you want any details." He thumbed at Iole, and went back to reading.

Frank heard something from Iole that sounded like, "Iuhmbuh, Mummbunnnuh bmbuhhh..."

That caused both Divine and Longbow to laugh.

While Iole flipped through various shades of purple skin, Divine asked, "Are you going to be all right there?"

Longbow came over and patted Iole on the shoulder, "It's all right.  We're just people, I swear, even if they make us look four meters high on film.  What's your name?"

"Iole?"

"Are you sure?" Divine asked, still laughing.

"Yes, sorry, Iole.  I, I just never thought I'd meet you in person.  You're, I mean, you are my favorite racers."

Longbow was flattered.  "Awww!  That's sweet to hear!  We don't get that a lot.  Usually it's Eccentric and Meter, or Silver Specter or Terminatrix.  Gallant too, maybe."

"No, it's you two," Iole said.  "I've been following you since your breakout at Tier 3.  Watched every race, on review if I needed, I don't usually get the chance to sit down and watch real time.  Still serving."

"I see the uniform," Divine said as she examined the rank bars on Iole's collar.  Iole continued to be embarrassed at her redundant statement.  "What outfit are you with?" Divine asked.

"Uh, special assignment currently.  Our ship is in port, and we've got some leave.  The racer you saw, her name is Irina.  She's with our group.  So is Frank, here."  Then Iole corrected herself somewhat.  "I mean, that's how Frank and I met."

"Nice!" Divine exclaimed.  "You're vacationing together!  Well, welcome to Thessia, Frank."

Longbow contemplated a bit.  "Listen, I usually don't do this but Divine and I have a qualifier to run later, and sometimes it helps us to get our minds off things.  Do you both want a look at the garage?  You can ask your friend Irina if she'd like to come, also.  But let's keep it small, all right?  Just the three of us if she wants to come along."

Iole was so stunned she momentarily forgot to answer.

The maiden named Ysha'na

"What you say does put things in perspective," Ysha'na said to Anika, peering out the window at some of the gorgeous buildings in the city.  The maiden's fingers tapped nervously in her lap.  "It's interesting how it all makes sense.  I bet your sisters are pretty easy people to pick out of a crowd if you don't mind me saying so.  But if you care for them so much, I bet they'll be happy to see you again whenever they do."

The transport was coming to its fifth stop.  Nearly everyone had gotten off by that point.  "This is it," Ysha'na remarked.  "We're heading across the sky bridge to the far plaza."

Anika did notice a sort of holiday or weekend population around.  The corporate office are was dead.  Occasionally an asari in a business outfit, or an instant delivery courier passed by, but the sky bridge off the platform offered an amazing view of pleasing to the eye, yet empty, office buildings.  The plaza Ysha'na headed to had five skyscrapers emptying into its grounds.  Most of the first floors were occupied by various restaurants, all closed due to the races.  There was a security guard walking about, but after two glances (the second to make sure she wasn't delusional when she saw Anika's tall form), she paid no heed.

"Over here," Ysha'na beckoned, coming to a side stairwell clearly for employees only.  She flashed her very basic Omni-tool and the door unlocked.  "We're going up the back way.  I have to get up to the office."  The stairwell would have been dimly lit, but Parnitha's light shone through the entrance way, brightening it in natural, if shadowed, light.  The maiden started up the stairs, presuming Anika to follow.  "This shouldn't take a moment."

Armali Raceway - Irina

Irina watched the next two qualifiers in the stands, then Alisa slid into the seat next to her to watch the final race.

“I need to take a couple of scans of your head if you don’t mind,” Alisa said. “Practice runs for the main pairs event are tomorrow. You should come down and watch them. You might learn a few tricks.”

“I was planning to do some sightseeing, but I’ll keep that in mind,” Irina replied.

Alisa held her omni-tool over Irina’s head. “That’s fine, but Longbow and Divine have the track around 0900. I’ll be down here working on your bike.”

“What about the crew?”

“They have the day off,” Alisa said and paused. “Look, I like you. There are things you don’t know…. My dad and Septerax grew up together. Everyone goes in the military for a couple years. My dad left and raced. Septerax wanted to fly fighters but never had the right connections to get into officer school.”

“So how did you get stationed aboard the Janiri?”

Alisa laughed. “I finished at the top of my tech class. I had my choice of assignments,” she said pausing as the bikes flew by them. “My dad and Septerax kept touch and my dad said ‘Septerax tells me the Council has a brand new ship. Why don’t you apply there instead of some old Turian rust bucket?’ So I did.”

“So what do you think?”

“Wouldn’t trade it for any assignment in the galaxy,” Alisa replied then laughed. “Food could be a lot better, though. I swear that Krogan has it in for Turians.

“I have to check local vendors for your helmet. There has to be someone on this planet that has one.”

Irina went back to eating popcorn and watching the next race while Alisa searched. Everyone was out of stock upon the entry of Cascian Racing. This left her swearing.

“Why don’t you try VERA?”

“You’re kidding? You think a computer would have any better luck?” Alisa scoffed.

Irina tapped her omni-tool and made contact. “VERA, I need a new helmet for the race and we seem to be running into a little problem. One that I think could be solved using the ship’s budget and perhaps the boss’ authorization. You can reimburse it directly out of my account,” she said.

“I have been watching the races. Congratulations on qualifying,” VERA replied. “That was a nice burn. Am I correct in assuming that your current helmet is inadequate?”

“That’s right.”

“I really should not use Spectre Authorization to obtain something for recreational purposes,” VERA replied.

“It’s not for ‘recreational purposes.’ It’s for Janiri morale,” Irina winked at Alisa. “And it would be a huge favor to me. There are a few of the helmets in stock at some vendors, but when the account Cascian Racing appears there always seems to be a problem. This is traditionally an Asari only event, and I’m the first human racing in it.”

“I see.”

“Just do it. Be creative. I’ll have Service Chief Cascian will send you the details.”

“Already done,” Alisa said.

Moments later Irina’s omni-tool flashed. It was VERA.

“I have procured said helmet from Deshali Jetbike Racing Supplies for Commando speed assault testing,” VERA said. “Since you have been training with the Commandos and are going fast this is true, but still deceitful since this is not a military exercise. I told them our exercises are being run currently. This is true. Again deceitful because I left out what kind of exercises and they are not classified. The vendor agreed to make delivery today.  I had the package marked ‘Attention: Septerax’ and have notified him. He has agreed to deliver it to you. I have transferred 15,000 CR from your account into the general ship’s account.”

“15,000 CR?”

“Originally they are 10,000 CR, but another racer recently cracked their helmet in an accident at the track and needed a replacement," VERA replied. "There was a bidding war.”

Anika stepped inside the stairwell and looked up the stairs to where Ysha'na was ascending. Something in the back of her mind was making her feel on edge but she put it down to her new surroundings being on Thessia.

It was still hard to believe she was actually here. Even Jess had never found reason to swing the Medusa by this corner of the galaxy. To little reward for the trouble she'd always said. Being here however, she wondered if Jess had really known what she was missing... Heck, she herself was missing out too helping this maiden but she reasoned afterward she'd enjoy showing a newcomer around.

Placing a hand on the rail, she followed on upwards.

Thessia, unknown location.

Kira

Welcome home, Matriarch Kira.

Kira bowed slightly.

Your sudden disappearance from your home in Nos Astra without warning was cause for great alarm.

I fail to see why, It’s not as if--

You know exactly why.

We also feared that you may have returned to your old ways.

My old ways?” Kira’s eyes narrowed. “It’s been over eight hundred years! How long am I to be haunted--

We considered involving the Justicars.

Fortunately, the incident at the cafe on the Citadel gave us some indication of where you were.

And then you disappeared again. For several months. Without a single update on your whereabouts.

The circumstances under which I left--

Do not matter.

As you know, you are the only one of your kind to have been granted such freedom. Only because of your continued cooperation, have you not been targeted for assassination.

You are to remain in contact with us, as you have in the past. Anytime you travel to another system, another planet, or even another city, you must inform us immediately. There will be no exceptions."

While I am aware that you are currently affiliated with Spectre Daliax Gavian, that should make it easier to keep track of you, I still expect regular reports from you. If this happens again... I’m afraid we will be forced to take action. I'd rather it not come to that.

I understand.

You are free to go, Matriarch Kira.

Before I leave…” Kira bit her lip. “Could I…

See her?

Kira nodded.

Do you really think she has any interest in seeing you? After what you have done?

I… no. I suppose not… but if you could just…

You know as well as I do that it’s never going to happen.

I will put in a request. Is there anything else we could help you with?

Kira just shook her head, and walked away, trailed closely by her escort.

Armali – Faed

It had been a long time since Faed had socialized with the crew. To be honest, he felt uncomfortable about it. He was still a little uncomfortable with the looks he received from the others who had never seen a Quarian before. His face didn’t look that much different than that of a human, except for the cybernetic implants on his temple and forehead. His eyes had white irises, his skin pale purple, and his hair a dark purple. It had grown out to shoulder length like that of the ancestors.

He checked with VERA to see who was still aboard and was surprised to find Vayne, but she advised him that Vayne was not likely to be leaving the ship, having already run into Blood Pack mercenaries. “…. Would you mind exploring Armali with Essul? He just left the ship not that long ago,” VERA said. “I can contact him if you’d like.”

“I would like that very much,” Faed replied. “I would rather not wander around alone.”

“I will contact him then.”

A few seconds later, Essul’s omni-tool flashed. It was VERA asking him if he would mind accompanying Faed while they explored Armali.

Faed wore the ship's blue casual wear, and awaited at the airlock.

Jess sat on her couch in the hotel. An ear piece in her ear as she spoke to the one on the other end of the line.

"...and I can guarantee delivery ahead of the date you needed thanks to the network of ships I have available. The Medusa can haul goods into standard shipping lanes and then we can offload to the smaller freighters who will get it to where you need it to go. This isn't a standard practice of course but when you have a ship as big as mine and a support net like the K&Q's it gives us certain flexibility in delivering the goods...".

She went quiet as the other person spoke. "No! No no no. We're not part of a Citadel task force. I mean.... that ship. What do they call it? The Jaffy? Well that ship bounces around a lot and it's happened to cross our paths once or twice and you can't let dock controller's fool you into thinking that berthing both ships next to each means something. The Medusa is and always will be independent. We work for our clients. So if your happy to...".

She stopped again and eventually let out a long sigh. "Well I'm sorry to hear that. I've got signed contracts for the trip out of Thessia so clearly many don't feel the same way you do but it's your business. Thank you for your time".

Ripping the ear piece out of her ear Jess reached threw it on the table before reaching forward for a glass of amber liquid. Taking a swallow she felt the burn down her throat and looked at the measly collection of contracts signed for to allow the Medusa to move goods off planet. Jess's head thudded back into the couch and she groaned. She'd rather be at the beach with Priss and Babe. Or watching the race. Or even crash the race in a vehicle she was sure Kolme could throw together at the last minute. Instead she was trying to cajole Asari out of established shipping contracts to go with the K&Q. Swiping other peoples customers might not be the best way to make friends in the shipping business, but it was a cut throat business to start with.

Setting her drink down she picked up the ear piece and dialed in her next call

The maiden named Ysha'na

Ysha'na jogged up the stairs, "Take your time I just want to make sure my employer sees me as soon as possible."  The maiden rounded the landing in the walled stairwell, out of sight, though Anika could hear the click of her heels as she climbed.  "Second floor, down the hall, can't miss it!"  Then there was a sound of a stairwell fire door opening.

Coming to the door herself, Anika opened it and saw a long hallway with offices through glass walls on either side.  There were desks, some neat, some a mess, and light dividing walls that made cells.  It was somewhat pleasing to the eye, but even asari aesthetics couldn't get rid of the sense of a dull sort of business environment.  No one was around that Anika could see, except for the shadow of Ysha'na down the hall.  She had really picked it up once she stepped off the stairs, having almost reached the end where the hallway made a T.  Down there, the walls were solid, likely executive offices.  Anika would have to pick up the pace to catch up and she was, until something that caught her eye half way down the hall gave her reason to pause.

There was a logo on the glass near one of the side office doors that read, "Premier Financial Services, R.I.S."

Ysha'na had said 'Prestiege Financial'.

The sound of someone approaching from ahead caught Anika's ear.  Whoever it was, the person came from the other side of the T intersection than the one Ysha'na had gone down.  Anika's warning instincts went off; she could make out the sound of armored boots when she heard them.

Ysha'na's shadow was still there, but began to recede as the maiden slowly retreated.  Her voice called out to Anika, and it had changed, still full of regret.  But the stumbling and the insecurity had faded from its tone.  "I'm sorry, Anika."

Anika had never mentioned her name to Ysha'na.

"You're incredibly nice and I wish that I could have done something different, but I meant what I said about my sister needing help and my employer being demanding.  I don't like this at all, if it helps.  You'll never see me again.  I'm going to leave this place, and disappear for centuries.  I hope you can understand."

The figure rounded the corner.  It was an unfamiliar asari, wearing the clear markings of Eclipse, and in the predominantly yellow armor.  She had a smug expression on her face.  "Get lost now, little maiden, the adults have some talking to do."  As Ysha'na's shadow faded with the quick click of her running footsteps, the asari came to dominate the center of the hall in front of Anika.

Then Anika heard the sounds from around and behind her.  More Eclipse agents, on the other side of the cell walls and in the hall behind her.  Anika took a visual read on some, the rest she needed her other senses to find.  The smug asari had a Claymore in her hands, custom fit for her non-Krogan build.

"You don't look like the surrendering type," the smug asari said, "But I have to at least give you the chance to make this easy on yourself human, at least one chance before we have to take you down.  So what will it be?"

Morgan

Morgan had found the place he was looking for.  What took him so long to find it wasn't that the VI directories weren't decent, they were exemplary, in fact.  It had to do with that some people just didnt' want to be found.

At the bar, Morgan had struck up a conversation with an asari.  The talk was easy.  While there were a few other aliens in the bar, there were few and only one other human who was with somebody.  The asari had taken an interest in him, and actually spoke first.

"Races?"  She had asked, while taking a long drag on a cigarette.

"Of course."

"Why not stay by the track?"

Morgan looked around.  "I try to find places to my liking.  Guess I'm not used to all the...aesthetic quite yet."

The asari laughed.  "Me neither sometimes.  Am I bothering you?"

With a shake of his head and a sip of his brandy, Morgan replied, "Not at all.  My name's Morgan."

"I'm Bezina.  I don't meet many humans, it's nice to see someone come out this far.  Pleasant surprise."

"Likewise."  Morgan ordered a drink for each of them, and the bartender served up glasses with little holo-averts on the sides of them.

To:  Irina

From:  Iole

Get your ass down here immediately!  Like pronto, as you say!  Frank and I are with Longbow and Divine.  They said you could come!  (but nobody else - who cares!!!)

Infield, you can't miss it.  The security guard will let you in, I gave her a description.

OH MY GODDESS!!!

Iole

"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!  Can I...touch it?"

Longbow chuckled.  The golden-eyed Commando was a lot of fun.  "Of course."

Iole knelt in front of the racing jetbike's nose.  The perfectly sleek vehicle was off, but always hovered using its auxiliary power.  This was the jetbike Longbow and Divine would be using for their qualifier.  Iole reached out and touched the nose, an expression of awe on her face.  "It's a Viyera.  Like Irina has."

"Well, not quite," Longbow said as she stepped up to and just behind Iole.  "This would be based of the 2185 Starscreamer not Starstreamer, but it really isn't even that.  The turians had a hand in the Starscreamer and it worked out so well that they were brought onboard for the racing prototypes.  We're just calling this the Oh-Five for the moment, or Mark Five, but it's pretty much an invention like most of the other pro-models.  Viyera is a good sponser though, it was them or NSD like you'll see some of the other racers have.  One or two Bloshuns in the race but they aren't as popular."

"You fabricated it here?" Iole asked.

"That's right.  It all gets produced and assembled with our top end fabricators.  We have three bikes left over that we haven't recycled, but they're really for backup.  None of them is as crisp as a new production.  This one's been taken through the loops by our crew so we're good to go."

Iole stood up, her shockface still on.  "I still can't believe you produce a bike from raw materials for most of your races."

"The pro-races?  Dear, that fabricator is more accurate than any top assembly line production, even for the limited runs of Starscreamers they make.  Money is no object when it comes to these things.  Trust me, Armali loves using the tech to resell and a ton of it gets over to the Republics armed forces.  Why do you think they bother getting themselves involved in these races?  Sure recruiting, but that's just a bonus."

Iole looked at Frank, stupefied.

"You look like you've got a bit of an eye for vehicle mechanics," Longbow said to Frank.  "I've noticed how you've been checking things out.  Here, why don't I show you some of the actual tech?"

Irina's omni-tool flashed. It was Iole.

Infield, you can't miss it.  The security guard will let you in, I gave her a description.

OH MY GODDESS!!!

She shook her head and turned to Jenus. "That was Iole. She and Frank are at Longbow and Divine's garage. Apparently she's having some kind of orgasm, and Longbow invited me down for a look at her bike, 'but nobody else can come,' she said," Irina said, "They're riding in the main event. I suppose that means no one else can enter the garage. If you want I guess you could come along and wait outside. We'll get something to eat afterward and head back to the hotel. What do you think?"

"Sounds good to me," Jenus said. "I was getting tired of sitting around."

The two left the stands. Tallis remained behind watching the last race and took detailed notes for Irina.

Most of the infield was quite busy with crews working on bikes and riders talking with their coaches. As they passed the makeshift garages, they entered the more permanent area and saw Longbow Racing prominently displayed. She and Jenus approached and the security guard stopped them.

"You were told only one," she said in a gruff voice.

"I know," irina replied.

"I'll just chill out here if you don't mind," Jenus said.

The guard contacted Longbow. "Irina Sloane is here and there's a Commando with her...."

"Jenus Stasia," Irina said.

".... Jenus Stasia. She said she'd wait outside the gate," the guard continued.
