Aria crowed about driving the Collectors off Omega. Naleena arranged the sale of her share to the Asari Military Industrial Complex at a profit of 150 million Credits, and she netted 110 million credits commission on the entire deal herself. With Aria’s blessing, the Asari Navy sent two cruisers, eight frigates, and several tugs to move the Collector vessel into Asari space. The Collector vessel was removed from Omega, and research into the technology promptly began by Anotaria Industries.

Naleena is back on the Audron.

After a whirlwind of activity, Jess found herself back on the Audron, in the quarter's she shared with Anika. Both had entered and set to their respective works.

Anika pulled out a armour maintenance box and fishing out a rag and bottle of thinner, set to work rubbing off the paint on her armour. Jess had cast an eye up from where she sat with her terinal settled between her crossed legs.

"You look good in blue".

"I like white".

"Hard to hide in white".

"I'm seven foot. I can't hide as well as most. So instead, I want them to see an armoured juggernaut bearing down on them. If you can't sneak the next best thing is to intimidate".

Jess shrugged. "Fair enough".

"Plus if their shooting at me their not shooting you".

"Thaaaaat's..... a reason"?

"Naleena want's me in leather".

"Woah! What you two do in your spare.....".

"Commando leathers"!

"........ what you two do in your spare......".

"For mission's"!

Jess rolled her eye's. "Keep it in the bedroom luv".

Anika was about to retort when she saw a smile cracking through Jess's facade. "Your messing with me, aren't you".

"It's a hobby of mine. Speaking of..... That ship of the Drowned Aspire cult.... Worst firewalls in the history of ship security. Whoever's coded these needs a lesson in basic scripting".

"Your hacking"?

"Yep"!

"Again"?

"You make that sound like a bad thing".

Anika sighed and turned her attention back to the armour, folding the cloth a new way so that it presented a clean surface. "Still sore they sent you doctored files"?

"Their hiding something about that colony. I'd lay good money it's gone. But they want us to think it's still there...... Where do we stand by the way"?

"Well, I've got the extra thermal clips, and the part's you wanted for the cooler, and.....".

"I meant, now your shacking up with Naleena". Jess looked up and over her terminal. "Is it serious"?

"I..... don't know. I mean we melded and we both liked it. But......".

"You don't know if your future's going to take you in the same direction as hers"?

Anika dropped her head. "Something like that".

"She's got her life, you've got yours".

"Yeah".

"One of you would have to drop it and move on with the other. Or not..... Long distance relationship"?

Anika sighed and looked up. "Maybe.... Look can.... we just drop this? It's none of your business anyway".

Jess looked up sharply and leaned forward, her voice a noticable degree cooler. "If I have to find a new bodyguard because mine decided to go off with someone they just met, denying me a first officer in the process, then your damn straight it is my business. I need you here with your head in the game. Thing's look like they could only go downhill. Really, really downhill.......". Jess leaned back and looked down again at her screen as she resumed typing. "Does Naleena know about our arrangement"?

"She melded with me". Was Anika's response.

"You know, being first officer means you'd have to hold back the important stuff. Secret's of the business and the like".

"She'd understand. It's not like I went looking for VERA's command codes, and she didn't advertise them. It's more like, we guide each other to part's of ourselves. Stepping off the path the other lays would be rude. A massive faux pax. Especially since the other would know if we did it on purpose..... Look, Naleena's different from other Asari. Maybe that's what drew me to her. And you said I needed to choose my own future. Well what kind of future can I have if you stamp on the future I want to explore for myself"?

"I'm not stopping you luv.... I just want you to think about the consequences".

Anika scrubbed at her plate, the blue was coming off nicely leaving the surface white again that she would later buff and polish. "I am. Thank you".

"Meh". Jess replied, then suddenly upright. "Got you yah little elusive.....". Jess's finger's stopped typing as her eye's flicked across the screen. "Well now..... cording to the D.A. that colony was dark when they flew by. No scannable signs of habitation as their logs say".

"So"?

"Sooooo. They have logs that show that ship flew to the same colony while it was active before this flyby. Then they leave. Sometime after it goes dark. Then they fly by it again and actively scan it again? Co-incidence"?

"Not if they actively scanned. We only do that if we see trouble. Or want to find something. Passive sensors would have painted the picture just as well".

"Your learning". Jess grinned. "Active scanning's like using a bulldozer to crush a cockroach. It'll do the job but it's overkill. But garanteed to do the job".

"They were looking for something"?

"Or someone's......". Jess paused as she began typing again and called on the comm. "Aelias! Howyah doing? Listen, I need chart's of all the dark colonies we know about near the Terminus".

"I can get that to you". Came the response.

Moment's later Jess saw the data pouring into her terminal. Crosschecking the data with the ships movment's she smiled. "Well now.... These people are very very bad. Ship's nav logs show they've been to several of these colonies that stopped responding".

"Well what does that mean"?

"No idea. But I'll bet there's a connection if we can find it. Let's try personnel logs". Jess was quiet for a time then. "Uh oh".

"Uh oh"?

"Hmmmm".

"Jess"?

"They might know I'm in their system".

"They might"?

"Probably definitely".

"Probably"?

"Well their wiping their entire database".

"What"?

"I know.... overkill". Jess furrowed her brow. "They can't tell where I am though which is always good..... Here we go. Captain's log"! Jess's eye's scanned the display before it went dark.

"Well"?

"Well what"?

"Well what did it say"?

Jess sighed. "I saw an entry about moving the Chosen Few to the Free Land on the planet Duellos before it got wiped and the connection cut".

"Duellos"?

Jess called up the planet on her terminal. "Duellos. Fairly standard colony world. Has two..... aaaand would you believe it". Jess laughed . "It's a joint colony! Alot of races working together to get it up and running faster than normal. Wiiiith.....". Jess checked an entry. "With a Drowned Aspire presence. Both in the colony and in a compound seperate from the colony. Look's like a facility? A colony ship that had a camp spring up around it". Jess looked up at Anika and grinned. "Well I was brought aboard to find a lead..... Guess I might float this in front of Deidrus and see if he bites".

"Come on, come on, come on, send something already." Vayne muttered to himself as he heard the commotion from outside headed this way. He'd sent word back to the audron that he was being attacked, and he'd expected at least some sort of word back to his position. Instead, he got omnitool silence, and silence was never a good thing when you had enemy forces barreling in towards you screaming like a maniac.

"Could the bastard be any louder?" he asked aloud, chuckling nervously as he tried to keep himself calm. His hearts were pumping, and he squeezed the grip of his carnifex tightly as he had his omnitool enter its omnibow form. If he wasn't going to get any word back from his "crew", he might as well put the thing to better use. Kellan for his part was doing a great job cowering in the corner under the cash register, where vayne guessed it was a more armored spot then where he was currently kneeling behind. It didn't matter much anyway, vayne's hump and head still would be sticking up over the counter, and out here he had room to duck to the ground, if need be.

As he heard the sound of footsteps getting closer and closer, he could tell by the sound alone it was the krogan coming. He braced himself, expecting him to come in barreling from the front door he'd entered from.

Ezha however wasn't exactly thinking, or seeing, clearly, and so ended up slightly baffled when he aimed for the door and instead crashed through something solid, the sound of cracking glass and denting metal and some pieces of safety glass coming off of his body as he stumbled forward, having charged directly through the window and kept going, hitting an isle of food and knocking it over.

Vayne blinked in surprise before he took his opportunity, taking aim for ezha as he brought himself up with a yell of anger, "Who the **** put this ****** glass here!?!" At that moment, vayne took the opportunity to fire his concussive omnibow aimed for the other krogans face, hitting him in the head plate as he stumbled back, arms moving up to block his unprotected area. "My ****** eyes!!!!" he said as he shock his head back and forth violently, getting really pissed off at his prey.

Vayne didn't waste time as he hoisted himself over the counter once more, wincing a bit as he landed on his still bad ankle. He ran forward none the less though, knowing now there was one way out and that it was being blocked by a recently disoriented krogan. As he ran forward at full speed, he took a few shots with his carnifex at ezha, each hit draining down the other krogans shields, and unfortunately letting him know vayne was somewhere in front of him.

"You think these rounds hurt me *******? Think ****** AGAIN!!!" Ezha thrust out his arms, firing both shotguns at once in front of him as hot steam shot out of both shotguns. The blasts were powerful, shredding the stores display case like tissue paper while sparks crackled from the extra electricity in them. However, thanks to the blanket of white hot steam, ezha didn't see vayne drop down beneath his outstretched arms, until vayne's hump rammed into ezha's midsection like a freight-train, and kept going. Both krogan flew out of the stores door, vayne on top of the younger krogan as he brought his carnifex down on the krogans head, aiming a well placed blow right on ezha's red eye. Vayne took in his opponent in greater detail, and noticed the discolored veins almost immediately.

'Thresher's bite. Perfect.' the older krogan thought as a wicked smile formed on his lips. Threshers bite was a powerful steroid that could just as easily kill a person as make them nearly invincible, one of the first and only drugs every made by krogan, for krogan, with the main goal of making them as strong as they were during a blood rage, all the time. The only problem with running your redundant and primary systems at once, was that it made your blood unable to properly clot, along with the manic insanity, which meant when vayne reached down to his thigh and unsheathed his krogan dagger, rearing his arm back to stab ezha right in the neck, he'd practically won the fight.

Ezha had recovered from the eye crushing blow, and seeing vayne pull his dagger, snarled as he got very, very, angry.

"**** you old man...you aren't killing me with that toothpick of yours...**** no, you hear me!? **** NO!!!" Ezha's body pushed beyond the breaking point as he dropped one of his shotguns, his arm thrusting up to catch vaynes arm as his grip started to make the metal reinforced ceramic on vayne's arm groan under strain. "YOU AREN'T GONNA ****** KILL ME MAN!!! **** YOU **** YOU **** YOU!!!!" as he yelled and shouted and thrashed about, ezha's eyes dilated until they were just two black spheres in his head. He'd entered his blood rage, and was acting almost exclusively on blind instinct and a survival drive to kill all threats around him with any means.

Vayne gritted his teeth as pain began to build in his arm, looking down at the krogan before he brought his pistol up to shoot him instead. Ezha dropped his other shotgun as he grabbed vaynes other hand, now gripping both arms together with the force like being crushed by a fully equipped mako tank. At this point, Ezha's own armor was beginning to strain from his muscles as he started pushing vayne upwards, vayne having to work hard not to scream as ezha's screams of rage ehcoed down the empty street corridor, as the bloodpack vorchas cautiously held their distance back. Without warning,  ezha released his full power, and with a swing backwards, managed to send vayne head over heels in a flip, and bringing him crashing down on his back. Ezha rose to his feet as vayne scrambled to roll over, reaching out with his hands for the first weapon that came into view.

Ezha let out a massive roar of fury and anger as he turned around, half of his entire neck and face covered in pulsating green vaynes as his blood flooded like a mighty river, his brains soaking in chemicals and was pretty much a rapid and primal beast at that point. Thresher's bite had done what it was most infamous for, and turned the krogan into an even more dangerous berserker, a blood rage while still perfectly fine and healthy. It would have been a problem, say for the fact that ezha had forgetten about the weapons he'd dropped when wrestling vayne, the ones he hadn't bothered to pick up.

Vayne aimed the shotgun and fired, surprised by the sheer force of the kick managing to snap at his wrist and making him wince as the steam shot out around him. "By the ancestors..." he muttered to himself as he saw its handiwork play out in front of him. Ezha, for all his bravado and drug induced madness, wasn't bullet proof, and as the phasic rounds tore through what little shields he had left, they also tore through a large chuck of his neck like it was nothing at all. Ezha let out a shouting gurgle, as the new hole began to gush its green tainted orange blood like a geyser, nothing to stop the massive blood pressure from his two hearts from spilling out all at once. He stumbled back wide eyed as he fell to one knee, and vayne got up off the ground as he reached out for his pistol and dagger, clutching both in the same clawed hand, shotgun in the other, as he got back on his own two feet.

Vayne aimed the shotgun at the kneeling ezha, ready to finish him off when he heard shouting behind him, realizing the vorcha who had been on standby had decided now was a good time to start using their weapons once more. "What the hell do you vermin even want!?" Vayne yelled in anger, before he did the only thing he could against these odds.

He charged ahead, back towards the way he came, through the vorchas, in order to get to the one thing he knew he needed right now. Vayne aimed his newly aquired weapon at one of the first vorchas coming up, and with one blast and a loud hiss of steam, the vorcha was left with a torso split in two, vayne's whole arm flying upwards and outwards from the shot, threatening to send him off balance. Next came the one on the left, which vayne shot in the leg with his carnifex pistol, after missing the other two shots. He kept running, his shields dropping rapidly as the vorchas continued their assault with their smg's and luckily missing with the pistols. As vayne continued his charge, one vorcha came closer to him, slashing at him with his claws as vayne batted him aside, sending him flying while the claws managed to cut into his forearms armor. There was one vorcha left up ahead, looking already battered and bruised as he held his pistol in one hand.

Grex stood him ground, waiting as the krogan began to get closer and closer, before he took his single powerful shot, managing to catch vayne in the torso as he stumbled forward, his shields already gone and the round passing into his organs. He dropped to one knee, but with a look up at the vorcha as he ejected his clip, and growled. "You pests...should learn to get out the ****** way!" he yelled as he thrust his arm out, his flamer activating as it coated the vorcha in molten material and fuel.

Grex dropped the pistol, screaming in agony as the fire started to consume him, and quickly scrambled away from vayne and began flopping on the ground in a desperate attempt to extinguish himself. Vayne hoisted himself up hard, his leg killing him, his shoulder still recovering from a previous fight, both wrists aching, and now with a bleeding wound to his abdomen. He ran forward as fast as he could, still hearing shots going off from behind him as well as some raspy shouting. He knew he couldn't stop, or the other vorchas would track him down and finish him off. "Keep moving vayne...keep moving...your granddad kept moving when the rachni were coming...if that old kavadar can do it...so can you!" he said to himself through gritted teeth, fighting off the urge to pass into a blood rage and let his redundant systems do the rest. He didn't want to lose control, he wanted to live. As he kept moving, he finally saw what he'd been working so hard to reach, skycabs sitting in a row, ready to fly him out of there.

As he moved towards it though, he heard something behind him, a heavy thumping, rhythmic, and growing louder. Vayne looked behind him, turning with his right to aim with his pistol as something crashed hard into him and sent him off his feet, crashing into a skycab as it compacted the glass easily. Vayne was now laying in the car on his side, his right arm inside the cabs interior as he dropped his pistol to the cars floor. He turned his head, vision swaying as he looked at something truely chilling. Ezha stood, blood covering his black armor as he loomed over vayne, he was breathing like a billow, a rasping sound as each breath send a gush of blood from his neck. His face was stretched, mouth bared in a full snarl as all his teeth glistened orange with blood. Ezha's eyes burned with pure fury, and clutched in his left hand, was one of his shortened shotguns.

"Yuu...mathah...phackga..." Ezha chocked out with a gurggling voice, taking a lumpering and heavy step forward. "Geet...Phacked!!!" he said as he lifted his gun to fire at vayne. Vayne lifted his own weapon, one of ezha's own shotguns, and aimed with his left arm, both of them trained on one another as he worked hard to aim at one another. There was a moment of pause as the two krogan held steady, both shotguns swaying slightly as each struggled with their own problems.

There were two thunderous booms, and two hisses of steam, at the same time.

Ezha fell on his back, one eye wide with shock, mouth hanging open in a look of surprise, as the other side of his face below his headplate to his lower jaw now sported a massive new hole in it, barely bleeding out from how much had come from the hole in his neck. As the krogan lay dead, vayne pulled himself with a groan of pain, falling into the hold in the skycab as he lay sprawled on the front seats. With a lot of effort, vayne pulled his legs through, letting out a gasp as his body righted itself in the seat, orange blood now starting to leak out from his hump, as it too sported a new hole. His redundant systems fluids leaked with his own blood, and vayne let out a massive scream as he hit the starter button as hard as he could on the cab, the systems booting up as he yanked the controls hard. The cab slammed into the guard rail, dragging as it hurled upwards and jerkily tumbled through the air and away from the warscene. The two vorcha's left alive ran forward, stopping when they came across ezha's head body. They looked to each other nervously, before one of them spoke up.

"Get Big Boss on line. Needs to know his nephew dead."

//////////////////////////////////////////

Vayne couldn't see straight, he could barely keep his claws on the controls for the cab, and he wasn't sure how fast he was going as he tried to navigate his way towards where he'd remembered the audron being parked. He was losing blood fast, and unless he found a way to plug the hole in his hump, he'd pass out, and his blood rage may end up very well killing him through blood loss. He didn't know when he started talking, and when he stopped talking, telling himself to keep going, but he couldn't hear himself talk anymore.

As he came near the docks, vayne set the skycab down towards the general direction of down, and was caught off guard when the entire skycab began spinning out of control after punching him in the gut. He'd crashed it at an angle, and the skycab, much to the horror of most in the docks, sailed towards them like an out of control skipping stone, tumbling a bit as he skidded to a halt, slamming hard against a railing as it cracked the clear glass.

There was an eerie silence for a few seconds, before the sound like a cannon went off, and the crumpled in door for the skycab now sported a new hole in it, white steam leaking from it. There was a loud crash and bang, and the cab door flew open, vayne falling to the ground in a heap as he labored to get his breaths in, red armor stained orange as he kept the shotgun gripped tightly in his grasp. He looked around, trying to see where he was as he fought to rise back on his feet. He got on one knee, legs shaking as he stood up, falling over as soon as he'd gotten out of a kneel.

"A-Androkannnn..." Vayne called out in his delerium, managing to get on his feet once more and he turned around with a stumble, seeing the ship he'd been looking for just a little ways away. Vayne lumbered forward slowly, arms dangling from his body, shotgun still in hand, as he began to head towards the ship, calling out name after name and hoping to the ancestors someone would come for him. "Naaleena...Mor...gan...Stooonnee..." he was falling. By the ancestors he was falling and he couldn't stop. Why were his legs giving in now? Why wasn't his redundant nerves catching the damn slack!?

'Oh yeah...I'm leaking from the hump...' vayne realized, having forgotten about that for a moment as he crashed face first on the walkway, now nearly out of energy. "...a..ar...arr..in.....any.one..." he forced out, sounding slurred and mumbled as his vision was now pretty much just a collection of blurred images. Krogan weren't suppose to feel this way, their redundant systems caught them from having blood loss like this, usually filling them with rage and an uncontrollable urge to rip and tear, not an urge to lie down and sleep. About the only time something like this happened was after a night of great drinking...heh, drinking.

"Thas ez....this aent ah guud buzz..." he said as his eye began to flutter close, unable to keep going any longer.

One of the guards who was monitoring the outside of the ship via video feed made no motions to decon as she tried to think of whether or not to allow the Krogan onto a Turian military vessel, wounded or not. She sent a quick frame of the video to Deidrus who immediately requested them to bring the Krogan to medical. As if that would be an easy thing to do...

Elara was called to the CIC to use biotics while two Turians lifted the remaining weight. The men on either side were bulky by turian standards but still would have trouble moving the man without significant biotic help to lessen the weight. A turian picked up each arm and slung it over their shoulders as Elara lifted the Krogan to lessen the weight by a large fraction. As she did that she walked backwards through decon and looked over his wounds.

Significant gunshot wounds to the body and bleeding from the dorsal nerve bundles... Likely to have nerve regression as network may be cut off until healing begins.

"He will need care immediately for his wounds, secondary nervous systems are probably failing him." A rare moment of sincerity and intent shone through for the Asari as the Turians rushed the Krogan into the lift and brought him down to the same floor as the medical bay.

Jess hit her comm and dialled Aelias.

"Luv? could you page Deidrus when he's free. I need to talk to him about a lead we may have found".

"Sure.... as long as you promise to stay off my comm network"!

"....... promise"?

"Was that a promise"?

"....... yes"?

Aelias sighed over the comm. "I'll tell him". She said dejectedly. I think he's dealing with a gunshot victim at the moment. The Krogan who helped us with fighting off the Collectors.....".

Jess sat up. "Fine. Tell him I'll meet him there".

"Your going"?

"That walking tank slapper was with us when we took that ship? I owe him a visit. Heck, we drank at the same table after! I'll check in. See how he's doing". Jess signed out as she headed for the door. Anika looked up.

"You need me"?

"Just heading to medical. Nothing serious. Just keep making that armour sparkle luv".

"Shiny Shiny Captain".

The door's opened and parted as Jess strode out and headed towards medical

Naleena returned to her quarters only to find them in disarray. Dahlia was flopped on her bed and a bottle of Hallex was open. Music was blaring out of the speakers. Naleena shook her head and thought, maidens.  She turned off the music, and began to straighten out her quarters. When she finished she woke up Dahlia.

“Hey!” Naleena shook her.

“Mfff,” Dahlia replied.

“Wakey wakey,” Naleena jostled her again.

“Go away!”

“Why didn’t you just go to Afterlife?”

“Go away!”

“You took two, didn’t you? One would have been enough,” Naleena said, “Oh well; I’ll get you something to eat. You’ll feel better.” Maidens!

After feeding Dahlia, Naleena went to see how the human male, Morgan, was doing. She rang his quarters but there was no answer. Being curious she opened the door. Morgan wasn't there, nor were his belongings.

'What the hell is going on? Did he leave?' Naleena examined the room. There was no sign of a struggle. It was as if he was never there. She scanned the room with her omni-tool. The room had been cleaned to Turian standards. Still there were signs of human DNA and Turian DNA, both expected.

She left his quarters and went to see Septimus. 'He should have some idea as to Morgan's whereabouts.'

Septimus was at his station in the Shuttle Bay, and Naleena approached him. "Septimus, I'm looking for Morgan. Do you happen to know where he is?"

"Yes. Elara put a request to have him moved someplace quiet and out of the way," he replied, "Something about exhaustion. My staff moved his belongings there. I would assume he's being treated."

Naleena was looking down at the floor. "Where are his new quarters?"

"I'm not at liberty to say. Elara gave strict orders."

"Septimus. You know I can find out easily," Naleena said looking up at him with her eyes. "Your computer system isn't that sophisticated."

"You wouldn't. If the Captain found out."

"The Captain wouldn't find out, or I could take it from that Asari quack's mind myself," Naleena smiled at him. "So that's three choices. You tell me or I do one of the other two. The bottom line is that I need to speak with him."

"You know that Asari has an excellent barrier?"

"It's not going to get that far.... d - Serrice Ice Brandy. One case."

"B*tch. Deck one, port side. It's next to the conference room. Excellent soundproofing. It's pretty small," Septimus said and clacked his mandibles. "Please, make it look like you're exploring the ship."

"Right."

Naleena left Septimus and walked into the elevator. She pushed the button for the CIC and engaged her cloak. The door opened and she slipped out and hid in a corner near the bulkhead. One of the Turians noticed the elevator arrived with no one on it.

"Someone must be playing games again," the marine said, "Probably one of the humans, or that Asari maiden."

Naleena used the distraction to move to the port side and slip through the door into the antechamber between the short hallway to the conference room and the room where Morgan was being kept. Naleena scanned for security cameras. She tapped her omni-tool and texted VERA to hack the camera and loop the security feed. She remained cloaked until she got the okay from VERA. The door to room was locked. Naleena began hacking it. In about 10 seconds she was through. She checked the door for any alarms. None. She texted VERA to be ready to do another camera hack, and she opened the door while cloaked and scanned the room. There was another camera, and VERA hacked it and looped the security feed. She also checked for listening devices. The room was clean. Naleena closed the door behind her, decloaked and approached Morgan.

Morgan was lying unconscious on a single bed.

Naleena knelt down beside him. "Morgan. Morgan. Wake up."

Morgan didn't move.

She shook him gently. "Morgan! Wake up. Are you okay?"

Morgan stirred momentarily and acted like he was drugged. "Mfff."

What the hell is going on? Naleena thought, then shook Morgan again. "Morgan, wake up. It's me, Naleena."

Medical was not what she would have calledl a flurry of activity, but on entering Jess found the atmosphere somber enough that it surprised her to find that Elara was at the centre of it all.

She stood over a bio bed, wrapped in a white mask and gown as she seemed to be operating on the large hulking mass of Vayne.

"And that's fiftteen". She said casually as she pulled a forcep away with a piece of shaving block clasped in between the prongs. "One more and it's a new record". Jess took a long look at Elara. Despite her bedside manner she could see her eye's cinched while her shoulder's seemed rounded with tension. Jess gave a slight cough and Elara looked up. "What are you doing here"?

Jess seldom thought she could misjudge someone so badly, but the authority Elara was pumping out in the heat of surgery was intense. "Came to see how he was doing". Jess said, gesturing at Vayne. "I'm supposed to meet the Captain here".

Elara made a frustrated sound in the back of her throat. "Fine. Just don't interrupt".

Jess leant back agains't the wall of the bay as Elara leaned over Vayne's body once more. The forcep's extending out. "Come on sweet sixteen"!

Vayne was very much unconscious at this point, bloodloss, exhaustion, the damage to his hump, and the drugs keeping him under, all working well to keep him asleep, and more importantly, keeping him from entering a blood rage. It wasn't a peaceful sleep though, and the inside of vaynes mind was at the current moment a bit of a jumbled mess, courtesy of the anesthetics. Memories, fantasy's, and long forgotten thoughts all swam together, bumping and intercepting one another without a more rational brain in charge.

And of course, the mumbling. It was a habit vayne had always hated, finding out quite young he had a habit of talking in his sleep if he took any sort of drugs before bed. Hard to avoid when a stiff drink of ryncol was all you had to comfort you on a hotbox planet, and hard to avoid when having surgery done on him.

"Goddammit rackham....no boozing...on da job..." he mumbled softly, eyes still shut and head barely moving as his vitals still read low. His breathing was shallow but stable, and he didn't show any signs of things spiking anytime soon, fortunately.

As the deep slumber ebbed, Morgan heard a familiar voice. He opened his eyes but there was a delay before his mind caught up, so he ended up staring at Naleena for a while, wondering why he was looking at an asari and how he knew her. While his faculties were returning, Morgan blinked a few times.

“I was supposed to see Jess,” Morgan muttered, and then steadily sat up. He felt oddly embarrassed and at the same time made sure to control his outward expression. Morgan couldn’t help wonder if something had happened while he was asleep, either at the turians’ hands or at Naleena’s. Without reason to mistrust either, it was an unfounded suspicion but suspicion was in his nature. Regardless of what had happened, he didn’t like being in a vulnerable position, lying down in a small room with one exit.

The cast was still on Morgan’s arm and he tore off the thin, flexible material easily. Underneath, the medigel had done its job, fully healing his arm. As a reaction, he clenched and opened his fist. Morgan’s omni-tool had been removed to place the cast, leaving him with no chronometer and wondering how long he’d been out for.

When his faculties had come back fully to Morgan, he realized Naleena had been patiently waiting the entire time without saying a word. He felt a guilt pang over his previous suspicion, “I’m fine, I think.” It wasn’t completely honest, if for no other reason than the memories of his trouble with The Shadow Broker were returning. “That pirate captain was right,” he remarked, thinking back to the run in he had with Jess. Then he looked at Naleena. “I'm not exactly up to speed, but where are we headed?”

Jess paced medical. The odd 'tink' as another piece of shaving block hit the tray the only sounds amoung the occasional grunt of Vayne in his coma.

Where the hell was Deidrus?

Bad enough she was still apart from her ship, they were losing time.Time for collector's to move in on other colonies while they were still playing catchup. In her mind she was thinking of ways to just bypass him. Get the ship moving. Duellos seemed the best option in her mind, but then, she wasn't the captain, the hub of intelligence or decision making on this tub. That was Deidrus and he appeared to be taking his sweet time talking to her......

Maybe she could talk to Eteon. Or the XO?

Heck, maybe she could convince Deidrus to give her some limited power to decide their course. Finding all this intel was usless unless they could act on it.

Give him some time luv. She thought to herself. Don't go second guessing a captain aboard his own ship. You'd hate it if he did the same on mine.

Thoughts of the Medusa instantly created a pang of wanting to return. Hopefully she'd be able to do so soon. Regardless of their next destination Jess felt like she'd fufilled her end of the job. The call to return to her own ship was powerful.

She continued pacing.

Deidrus entered Medical glancing from Captain Stone to the body of Vayne on the operating table, a puff of air leaving his nostrils. They owed him the chance to be treated after he assisted them in dealing with the Collector threat on Omega. Ties are important to make in this place.

He walked to Jess as she was apparently waiting for him. "Apologies, I was tied up in a communique with the Council." He stepped into the path of her pacing and looked the seemingly restless woman up and down. "Aelius told me you would be looking for me here. What is it?"

Jess paused and gathered her thoughts.......

"There's a cult group. A captain on Omega pointed me to them. They flew past one of her colonies that went dark that she's on her way to later..... I asked them for their flight records and they handed them over..... But they doctored the reading's for the colony".

Jess paused and took a breath. "They showed the colony as still being there. Dark colonies just mean that they stopped transmiting updates and requests so seeing the colony still there wasn't grounds for thinking something was wrong. But the ship that flew by had stopped there previously. And the reading's of the colony to..... good, for the distance they were flying by".

"I dug through the data and found the colony reading's had been superimposed over what is there. This cult..... This.... Drowned Aspire group? They don't want us to know the colonies true status that they lied. Normally I'd chalk it off to some sort of personal stake in the colony but..... These collector's change everything. The Drowned Aspire might have a connection. I don't know what. But I've been digging deeper and the D.A. have a profile. They fly to colonies, recruit people from them, then fly off...... And then weeks afterwards, the coloniy goes dark. I ran some number's and those visited by the D.A. are more likely to go dark than other's..... I don't know if the corellation is positive. But it's there".

Jess sighed and ran a hand over the back of her neck. "There's a planet called Duellos. Bit of a frontier's frontier colony. Joint venture of the council species involved in mining as far as I can tell. It's new but with all the support it's grown faster than most..... The D.A. have.... a church you could call it? It's a hub..... one of their hubs. I don't know waht other leads you have but I'd suggest heading over there and asking questions. Maybe it's innocent co-incidence. But.... I think those who get taken from the colonies before they go dark are taken to that complex. The D.A call them the Chosen Few and the complex is referred to as the Free Land".

Jess looked up and shrugged. "Best I've come up with so far. They look suspicious and my gut's telling me they have things they they'd rather us not know".

"Anyway. Attican Traverse. Styx Theta. Dangerous area to navigate so it's not got much shipping going in or out except for freighter's. The colonie's co founded by alot of the races, council with a few minor exceptions. Look's like the planet's fairly arid. The colonie's the only place with a spaceport with the D.A complex a fair distance away. We'll need transport if we go there".

The following is a collaboration between Kel and I:

Morgan’s tiny quarters had a single bed, chest, a desk, chair, sink, and a toilet. Except for the portal, it looked more like a cell to Naleena than what would qualify as quarters. It was warm and stuffy in his quarters, and Morgan was perspiring. He didn’t look well. Naleena got a glass of water and handed it to him.

“Goddess, you’re a mess. What happened to you? Why did they put you in here? I had to practically extort my way to find you,” Naleena said.

Morgan took the water thankfully. He took a sip, feeling damp under his skin suit. “I was told the exhaustion hit me. Wouldn't be surprised. I was running full steam long before I hit the Audron. Maybe I had some nightmares while I slept, not that I would remember.” Morgan pulled his suit out at the chest and let it snap back to get some air inside. “You know how it is.”

“Exhaustion? What happened to you? Cast?” Naleena asked. “And where’s your omni-tool?” She pulled up the desk chair and sat in it. She offered Morgan a cigarette, but didn’t take one herself. Morgan noticed that she looked very concerned for his person. “There is also a camera in here. I had VERA hack it and loop the video feed. Elara wanted someone to keep watch on you, apparently. This room is clear of listening devices, however,” Naleena said with disdain.

Waiving off the cigarette for once, Morgan gave a hint of a sarcastic smirk, “The Audron's spies wouldn't even rank. If anything, they rely too much on technology.” He searched Naleena, but she was hard to read besides her concern. “Still, it makes things easier.

“Sorry if I didn't come off as appreciative about the deal with the Collector ship. It's just that...not everything quite went according to plan. The people who need the money, the people important to me, there are concerns. Nothing I can do about it right now. But until I check in personally, it's going to bother me.”

How much was Morgan going to trust an Asari whose job it had been to interrogate him and impersonate a Spectre? Even one who had passed a fortune into his family's hands?....actually if he had been anybody else he wouldn't have a question at all.

“You know The Shadow Broker and the kind of people I deal with. Dealt with. Money brings problems as much as it solves them for my kind.” Morgan frowned slightly. “This Collector investigation...a lot of lives are at stake, sure. It is as important as anything else going on out there. But the Collectors are second on the list for me of dangers. Do you have people like that? Or did you?”

Naleena read the look on Morgan’s face like an open book. She knew. She knew from her own experience centuries ago. She took off her coat while she remained seated and let it fall over the back of the chair leaving her blue toned arms exposed. She clasped her hands in front of her, and leaned toward Morgan. “Your family? I figured that’s where I sent the money,” she said, “To answer your question, yes. The situation is quite complicated. I sense… well it’s quite obvious that you’re very slow to trust people. I will respect your boundaries.”

Naleena took a deep breath. She was about to tell him something to gain his trust. Anika had seen it in their meld. “Morgan, one doesn’t wake up one morning and decide they want to kill people for a living….”

“Wait,” Morgan interrupted, holding out his hand.  “I believe you.  The details…you don’t need to tell me.  What I think you understand is people like that, well, it’s bad for someone who does what you or I do.  And like you, where I am now isn’t entirely by choice, though it sure as hell started there.  If I knew what it would bring I never would have become what I am.  Money solves problems, maybe, if a person is an upstanding citizen, clean nosed, whatever you want to call it.  But I don’t have to tell you that to others, there are things worth far more.”

“And you can’t outrun some of those things, can you?”  Morgan paused.  He watched Naleena, leaning towards him, pulling in every word he said.  Abruptly, Morgan got up and turned marginally away.  Feeling exposed, he crossed his arms across his broad chest and put a hand up to his jaw.  “To be frank, Naleena, you’re more intimidating than Jess’ seven foot tall bodyguard, or maybe even Vayne, though I wouldn’t really want to see a contest.  But you’re also familiar with the dark side of the business that gets transacted in the galaxy, the very dark side.  Collecting a body, and freezing it is one kind of abomination.  Owning someone’s soul is another.”

A sadness filled Naleena’s eyes and she looked at the floor. “Indeed,” she said in a low voice, and then she looked up at him. “You understand. What is it you humans call it? It is like we made a pact with the devil?

“You do not know how much I would like to have that part of my life end. I have caused a lot of pain in my life, and I would like to do some good for a change. I hope I did over the past couple of days. Maybe I tipped the scales with the Goddess a bit….” Naleena leaned back in her chair. “Enough about me, Morgan. You’re right. I’ve been around long enough, and I’ve run in the dark circles enough to know how the Broker operates. Your family… are they safe? Do you need help with them? Is there anything I can do to help?”

Morgan glanced back at Naleena for an instant.  “A mother and two siblings is what I have back home.  Either something I can't do anything has already happened to them, or somehow part of what I did worked, they were warned, and they did what they could to hide.  If they made it, I need to get to them eventually, to make sure they are all right.  At worst...at worst I need to know what happened.

“I'm not sure what else can be done other than going.  Communication isn't a good idea at this point, even if it is safe.  It would only tempt them to come out or to contact me further.  They are ordinary people; they have no experience with the kind of things I do.  I mentioned this to Deidrus, but as you can imagine, the mission for the Collectors comes first.”  Morgan hesitated as he was reminded of another way to ensure his family's safety, but he pushed it aside. “That's about all I can do.  Get there and see for myself.”

Naleena sat quietly for a moment. She saw Morgan's glass was empty, took it and filled it again. “Deidrus had mentioned something about going to Illium. I know of an information broker there, Dr. Liara T'soni. I can make a request to her for you, not in person either because the Broker would probably have me tailed, but perhaps VERA could make the request. Yes, that would be the way to do it. She's quite the assistant, you know. I have liquid funds to cover it. At least you would know if they made it to safety. What do you think?”

“That is incredibly generous of you, “Morgan answered, listening to the sound of the water pour.  He curled the edge of his lip self-consciously, “But...I think you already know that I can't feel certain until I see them myself.”  And I think that I'm already talking to all the asari I can handle, he added in thought.  He also calmed an immediate anxiety that came from imagining wandering Ilium, a world full of Asari.

“I understand about needing to see them yourself,” Naleena replied while handing him the glass. “There were no strings attached to my offer. Perhaps we should speak with Androkan together. Two voices can be louder than one. And after the Collector business and knowing the enemy we're facing, these personal issues are taking on a stronger meaning.”

Morgan nodded. He didn’t want to ask, but felt obligated. “What are yours?”

“I gave Androkan the terms of my employment. They are simple: Immunity and STG leaves me alone. Then I can live a normal life. I want to raise a family. 'That is up to the Council,' I was told,” Naleena shook her head. “So that's still unresolved, but helping save lives is better than taking them. I will be speaking with him again soon about my own requirements.”

Deidrus was silent for a long moment as he looked Jess in the eye's, seemingly weighing up his options. "What makes you think this.... Drowned Aspire group have anything to do the Collectors? Your evidence seems thin".

Jess held his gaze, refusing to backdown. "I never said it was solid. I know it's shaky. But there are things that just don't add up". She began ticking items off on her fingers. "Why did they doctor false reading's onto the flight logs? Why are colonies that are visited by the Aspire more prone to going dark? Seeing as they have had close contact with these colonies, why are they coming forward with what they know? If they've been pulling people off colonies to join their cult, why haven't those who went with them said something? Raised a ruckus? Reported colonies going out of contact"?

"It's likely because they are a cult that they do not wish to attract attention to themselves. They may simply be wishing to protect their right to secrecy. A cult under investigation is less likely to recruit followers".

"Okay fine.... so it's not a solid lead. So what else do we have"?

Deidrus's pause gave her everything she needed to know on that front. After awhile he cleared his throat. "I know that you know that taking a ship to go somewhere is not a case of whimsical desire. We have to refuel, wear and tear on the equipment, if this prove's a red herring then we will lose precious time trying to predict the collector's. Above all, we need to prepare for what I feel is the enevitable confrontation we will face....... Look me in the eye and tell me you'd fly there if you were me".

Jess chewed her lip, then looked away. "No. Duellos is out of the way. Hard to route comunications through due to it's location. Surprising though. For a joint mining town I'd expect it to have better comm access. Apparently the planet's high in resources. The industry there is setup to mine and process what they have".

"How interesting".

"Hmmmm. Who'd have thought the Asari would have a Silias armour factory built outside their territory......".

Jess wasn't looking directly at Deidrus when she let slip that piece of news. But when she looked around she knew she'd scored a hit. Deidrus's mandible's were quivering. Seeing Jess saw that he quickly looked down and typed in a serach into his Omni-tool before looking back up at her.

"Colony records show no such facility".

"Would you advertise it"?

"So your giving me a ghost lead with a ghost facilty that doesn't show......".

"Backtrack the recent shipping of freighter's that have made deliveries to Asari space where their ships have been seen being retrofitted with dull yellow plating over the most vital area's. The Asari fleet's been rotating into their shipyards for month's for what their calling 'routine' maintenance. This kind of recall's never seen unless there's a serious problem or the military have time before action to bring the fleet upto full readyness, for some serious longterm action. The freighter's carrying those plates come from alot of sources and one fo them is Duellos. Maybe the Cult angle is shaky, but don't tell me I don't know how to trace shipping and figure out what the buyer's need. It's how I make my living".

Deidrus sighed. "Very well..... It's not like we have anything better to follow up on. But for future reference I'd like any lead's you gather inthe future to have more than guess work involved".

"Luv..... Captain's run on guesswork. It's our job to guess right and let the other's think we know what we're doing. The Aspire are hiding something and the colony has some potentially serious ship defense we'd be fools not to aquire..... Collector beam tech and all".

"I'll give the order to go. It'll take some time to get there. I believe there is still fallout from Omega the crew are recovering from so perhaps the time will give them a chance to recover". He said looking over at Vayne.

Jess nodded following his gaze. "Amen to that".

Deidrus walked over to a comm panal. "Aelias". He said when he was connected. "Cancel all shore leave. Tell the XO to make sure we're fully stocked on fuel and then chart a course to the Styx Theta Cluster in the Attican Traverse. We're heading to Duellos".

"Sir. Cancel all shore leave. Inform the XO to take on full fuel status. Chart course to Attican Traverse, Styx Theta, planet Duellos. Aye, Captain".

Jess peered in over Deidrus's shoulder. "Awwww, listen to you love. You sound so precious when your reciting order's back to your superior".

A pause. "Captain......".

"Yes"? Jess and Deidrus said simultaneously, causing Jess to give an impish grin as Deidrus swung around to give her an annoyed glare.

Aelias's sigh over the intercom was resigned. "Never mind...... sir". She said as she signed off".

Deidrus straightened himself. "If you'll excuse me. Elara! How is our guest"?

Elara strighted up from where she was bent over. "I've pulled the shot out of him and I'm closing the wounds. His healing should take care of the very worst injuries and he'll need alot of food to replace the reserve's he's burnt though..... Other than that, it's up to him now".

Deidrus nodded. "Understood. Keep me updated". Then he turned and walked out the doors.

Jess turned back towards Elara. "Glad to hear he'll pull through".

"Likewise..... though who know's where we'll find the food to get him back up and running".

"Oh you leave that to me luv". Jess said grinning. "I've got a freezer of grub he can get through when's he's up and running". With that hanging in the air, Jess turned and followed Deidrus, out the door.

Earth, New York City

Captain Luke Ganis weighed the temptation of the half eaten coffee cake at the end of his messy desk.  He had shoved it away, knowing it wasn’t going to help the diet he had started only ‘yesterday’ of course.  But in an overworked precinct, the little comforts helped him get by.  Still, when would he actually start?  His doctor had probably already given up on him.  He was reaching for it to throw it out when the door to his office slammed open.

“Pete!”  Ganis shouted, his hand jolted the coffee cake off its plate and onto his desk.  “I tell you every time you come in here to beep, until that door is fixed!”

Officer Richards was in his NYPD armor, and looked at the sliding door in mock interest.  If you didn’t have the glass set for full tint, you’d see me coming.”

“That’s beside the point.  Follow the instructions!”

“Are you sitting around the office again, Captain?”

Ganis exhaled heavily as he stared up at Richards, who returned a mischievous glance.  Pete was a pain in the *ss but had always done his job.  As usual, the Captain let it go.  “Old jokes aren’t exactly the way to get on my good side…,” he began, but stopped as the C-Sec detective ducked past Richards and entered.  Pete, himself, was surprised at Hagen’s informality.

“Okay,” Ganis switched gears, “I’m busy and while you are a guest here with a bad roll model, Detective, I’ll have people ask me permission before they stroll into my office.”

“I apologize, Captain,” Molly Hagen said, with an absolutely straight face. “May I come in?”

“You two are unbelievable.”  Ganis waved Richards in from the door entrance.  “Close that damn thing and tell me what you want.”

Pete Richards closed the door, which wasn’t malfunctioning when it slid the other direction, so it sealed with a comfortable hiss.  Officer Richards then waived a hand in the direction of Hagen.

Detective Hagen asked, “The protection for the Severn family.  Has it been approved?”

“Right now? No,” the Captain answered while reaching forward and pulling up a display screen.  “I requested it and it was denied because of exactly the reasons you predicted.  You don’t have enough evidence of the tie in to The Shadow Broker…actually you have no hard evidence, even if I believe you.  Plus you are talking people who have money and could hire their own protection now.”

“Sir,” Hagen protested, “They wouldn’t know the first thing about who to hire.”

“That’s not our problem!”  Ganis came off louder than he meant to.  He eased back, “I know this is a lot of money we are talking about.  It hasn’t hit yet but it gets out when this kind of cash goes into an account.  This goes the same way for everybody who comes into money.  How long since the numbers hit their account?  Coming up on a week?  What does it make us look like if we throw officers at people who just happen to step in s**t?”  He looked at Hagen’s sour expression and turned to Richards. “Pete, what do you have to say?”

“Captain, uh,” Officer Richards started unsteadily, “Well, the Citadel wouldn’t have sent a C-Sec Detective if they weren’t onto something.  You have to admit, this is more than coincidental suspicion.”  Pete avoided the hard stare of Ganis, “However, yeah, I can see where you are coming from.”  Richards became rapidly interested in inspecting his shoes.

Detective Hagen squinted sidelong at Richards, then pressed Ganis, “Captain, what if we’re wrong?”

“We’re wrong a lot, Detective.”  Ganis started scooping up the mess he made with the coffee cake on the table and throwing it in the garbage.  “More often than anybody likes.  You want to give the family some pointers, I’m not going to stop you.  But if you want some protection, assigning officers, relocating people, mounds of forms filled out, you need to get me some hard evidence.”

After Naleena had left, Morgan examined his small room.  The metal chest was more high and pushed into the wall, and held all his belongings, adding an outfit for his comfort while ship bound. Nothing was out of place and Morgan gladly changed out of his armor’s skin suit.  When he was done, he wore a tight fitting dark gray T-shirt, and a set of matching slacks that reminded him somewhat of cargo pants with all the available utility loops and deep pockets.  To finish the outfit off were a pair of comfortable, yet sturdy, high black boots.

Once the outfit was on, Morgan slipped the computer microframe sleeve for his omni-tool onto his left forearm.  He took a quick look around the rest of the room, closed the thin divider door for the toilet and sink, and shoved the metal chair and desk all the way into a corner.  Then he peered up at the security camera.

~ ~ ~ ~

The door to Morgan’s cabin slid open.  A turian guard was standing outside the nearby conference room and turned as Morgan leaned out.“This cabin is available for my use?” asked Morgan, nonchalantly.  He spied the external camera above in the short hallway.

“Yes, according to Captain Androkan,” the guard responded.

“I’ll have to thank him myself.  For the door lock, I’ll need the codes to install them on my omni-tool, and for that camera over there to be linked into my desktop view screen.”

The guard clicked his mandibles, and sounded a bit less than certain.  “Uh, I will pass that along.”

“Whenever you get the chance,” Morgan said.  Then he pulled his one had from behind the doorframe and tossed the camera from his room to the turian guard.  The guard caught it, fumbling a bit, before he noticed the arm the camera had been attached with was severed.  Morgan winked, adding slyly, “Or if it takes too long, I can do everything myself.”

After leaving the surprised guard holding the camera, Morgan took the elevator down to the Audron’s Mess.  He didn’t order anything to eat, and instead put himself at the end of one of the unoccupied tables where he wouldn’t be bothered.  Eventually, he overheard a cook talking about rerouting some of the ship’s food products according to special instructions from the Audron’s ‘onboard pirate queen’ to help an injured krogan.

Immediately, Morgan worried about Vayne and searched for any information on the krogan that the ship’s computer was willing to give him access to through his omni-tool.  There, he found a sketchy report on the air car’s crash landing outside the Audron, bringing Vayne onboard, and the krogan’s recovery in the medical bay.   Morgan was going to visit the Vayne before he saw a notice denying visitation due to ‘regimented treatment’.

Wonder what that must mean, Morgan thought to himself.

No, no, I don’t...

A standby alert prompted on both Morgan’s omni-tool and the display screen in the Mess.  The Audron was preparing to head out, destination Duellos.  Morgan was unfamiliar with the planet, and noted it wasn't Illium, which gave him a sliver of relief.  He was about to look it up and then shook his head.

Plenty of opportunity to do that in a little while.  Morgan reached into a pocket where he had placed one of the few personal belongings that mattered to him, and pulled out a deck of cards.  Worn, but still usable, he began shuffling the deck, biding his time.

Jess walked onto the Audron CIC and after moving past several officers, stopped behind Aelias who simply looked back and sighed. "Announcment"?

"Announcment".

"I need the content".

"Really"?

"Really. The comm gear's for official use only".

Jess sighed. "I need to share some information on our destination luv. Objectives.... goals..... background..... that sorta thing".

Aelias nodded. "I can open channel's to just the primary recipients..... you don't have to talk to everyone you know".

"Bad practice luv. Rumour's fly and the better informed the crew is the better they perform on the whole run".

Aelias turned back to her board. "Okay.... give me a minute. I'll set it up".

Jess took a breath and let it out. "Let me speak to them".

Aelias nodded and pressed a control on her holo board."Your on".

Jess nodded. " Attention crew. This is Stone. The captain has decided on our new course. We're heading to Duellos. A mining planet with a council colony. The planet also holds a complex owned by the people who are the reason we're heading so far out of the way of galactic shipping lanes".

"A religous group calling themselves the Drowned Aspire have a complex there. To date, they have pulled recruits off planet's, some of which  went dark not long after their initial visit. We assume there is a connection but haven't found conclusive evidence beyond the circumstantial. We're heading the Duellos for two reasons. To see if there is any connection between the Collector's and the activities of the D.A. We're also going to try and find out if the mining industrial complex has ship upgrade's we need to defend the ship against collector attack. There's a possibility the colony manfufactures high end armour. The colony doesn't advertise the stuff so we may have to poke around to find out where it's made and how we can acquire some for the Audron".

"Transit time to the relay four hours luvs..... After that the navigater's straight shoting us to Duellos. It'll take around eight hours so make sure your ready to meet the local's when we're on planet. We'll be landing in the colonies starport. Bring rebreather gear or come in full suit gear. The planet has a low atmosphere warning. And bring your sun block. Scan's show it's a hot arid dustbowl of a world with gang's operating outside the colony".

Jess rubbed the back of her neck. "That's all".

Jess caught Aeilas's eye and she cut the transmission. "That was better than your other broadcasts".

"Serious times luv".

Just then the deck under them shuddered and Jess heard the vibration of the engines as the docking clamps were released and the Audron began to ease out of Omega's berth.

They were on their way.

The Audron’s twin core jump from Omega was a unique experience for Morgan.  It left him somewhat disoriented, but he guessed he’d become used to it eventually.  The four hours to the first Mass Effect Relay passed quickly, and then the Audron passed through several Relay transfers that would get it to the Styx Theta cluster in the Attican Traverse.

After the Audron’s final Relay, and as the ship began its FTL journey to Duellos, Morgan headed to medical.  The restriction on visiting Vayne was lifted, and he hadn't seen the krogan since the bar they had gone to on Omega.  Krogan weren't indestructible but Morgan was surprised to hear how badly it seemed to have gone for Vayne.

Vayne was immediately visible when Morgan entered the med bay.  The krogan was horizontal, his enormous form shifting ever so slightly as he breathed.  Above Vayne's bed an automated scanner and delivery system languidly passed over his body, administering whatever medication he needed.  No nurse or doctor stood immediately nearby.  Morgan walked toward the bed, and thought he heard mumbling as he approached.

Vayne's eyes slowly began to flutter open as the dulled and muted sound of biorhythm readings beeped about every so often. He felt strange, somewhat numb as his one eye looked about the room, feeling strange about the situation. He couldn't move well in the bed, his torso being restrained as the delivery system pumped Vayne's body with sedatives and immune boosters, as well as biochemicals meant to boost his body’s healing system, all going into Vayne's hump and the back of his neck. Despite being able to only move his head or shift a bit, he didn't feel all that concerned over it, in fact he felt almost a bit tipsy truth be told, most likely due to the drugs but also to do with the fact he survived.

"That'll teach those punks...not to mess with the big booss.." he mumbled with a bit of a smile, blinking as he heard something else, footsteps. He turned his head to see who it was, dilated eye squinted a bit as he tried to make up who it was. "Heeeeyyy...you. Good to see you again...glad you're safe." he said with a chuckle, soft and a bit weak as he let out a sigh, "They got me..got me restrained here...case I ended up hurting myself moving...busted hump and all. Probably didn't want to get fluid all over their clean floor..." his voice trailed off as he looked confused a bit.

"Hey Morgan...you know where they put my stuff? I managed to snag this cool shotgun off this ******* krogan...wonder if they'll let me keep it? Be a shame to have to split the haul with the crew..." he mumbled to himself as his head bobbed a bit, his eye managing to look Morgan dead center despite being unfocused.

Morgan couldn't hold back a smile.  "Asking about a shotgun in the first few sentences you say as you recover....I'm not going to say you fit the stereotype, Vayne, but you aren't helping."  The wounds Vayne was healing from would have killed a human five times over.  One of the turian medics passed by with a quick look at the readouts to make sure everything was in order.  She gave Morgan a nod to reassure him then left.  "I think you're going to make it," Morgan went on, "And I'll go find your spoils of war.  It shouldn't be a problem; I don't think I've seen one turian on this ship use a shotgun.  If it's gone missing, you can have mine...as soon as I find a way to win it back from Captain...Silver."

Vayne couldn't help but laugh at Morgan’s statement, soon turning into a bit of a coughing fit as he worked to get his breath under control. "Yeah...guess I didn't break the mold much, huh?" he said with a grin, "It was a sweet piece of hardware though...kicked like a broadside cannon...and had a cooling system I never saw before...just wanted to give it a look over..." he paused as his gaze shifted over to the turian, silently waited as he watched her face for news. It was tricky, but he got the general sense he was going to be all right, Morgan reassuring him a while later. Hearing about Morgan’s own shotgun troubles made him grin.

"So...ya lost your gun ta Captin Stone, did ya? Was it a friendly wager...or something a bit more then that? Maybe a token of a little somethin somethin?" he asked with a strained cheeky grin, the jolly mood wearing him out a bit. "Either way, best of luck to ya...a captain's rarely so eager ta give up their spoils of war, if ya catch my drift...I know I wouldn't have back then..." he said slowly, as if he were struggling to remember something, "It's...its the principle of the matter. You have to have yer principles when sailing the open space..."

Morgan grin faded a bit as he thought about Jess.  "You were there. I gave it to her for...winning...that drinking contest."  He lingered for a fraction longer than he should have before he continued.  "Nobody knows what's going on in that Pirate Queen's mind.  She's got her own agenda to pursue."

Feeling uncomfortable, and a need to pull the conversation another direction, Morgan looked for one of the desktop interfaces in med bay.  He rolled one over so it was within Vayne's view and reach. Then Morgan activated the interface, which brought up a screen showing the Audron's itinerary and home screen.  "I don't know about principles, but the Audron's heading to a planet called Duellos.  We've made the Relay jumps already.  It's a bit of a lawless place, from the sound of it.  Should be right up your and my alley.  I don't know what we're going to find there, but if there's trouble, Vayne, I've got your back.  Not that you need the help from a two-bit ex-Shadow Broker agent."

Vayne blinked in surprise, trying to remember back to the bar.  It was hazy, and he couldn't recall much outside of the awful batarian ale he'd had. Hearing Morgan though, Vayne looked him in the eyes, the smile on his face fading a bit. "Morgan...listen to me..." he said, a seriousness in his voice.

"The fact that you're an ex-agent...only means that you still have the skills of a shadow broker...nothing else but that..." he said, his voice straining a bit as he tried to lean up a bit to get a better look at Morgan. "We are...what we choose to be...what we choose to do right here...right now..." he gulped down heavily, realizing that sitting up like this was a bit harder then he'd thought as he began to lower himself back down.

"Take it from me...from what I've done...what I walked away from...the past doesn't define you...unless you choose to let it hold you...don't let it win Morgan...don't let them win and hold you..."as he spoke the automated system sensed a rise in Vayne's heart rates and released another dose of the sedatives. His breathing returned to normal, and his voice trailed off from there as it grew softer and less clear. "You're not like them...not like the old crew...not like Rackham...you're a privateer...not a pirate..."

"Well, don't let Jess hear you say that," Morgan falsely smirked, then lost his expression.  "Living ten times as long as I have, I'd imagine you've seen your fair share of trouble, Vayne."

Vayne lied with his head resting against the bed as he spoke, looking up to the ceiling. "Trouble’s one way of putting it...though I caused more of it then I should have..." he said, his voice calm and even as he spoke, the sedatives clearly having an effect. "I still...I still sometimes...remember stuff...bad stuff that scares me...makes me afraid I'll go back someday..." he said as he squinted his eye a bit, voice shaking a little. "I've split more blood then I ever should have...boarding ships and taking what I wanted. It was wrong...it was so wrong and I knew it was wrong....but I didn't stop them. I wasn't strong enough to stop them..." Vayne stopped as a tear slid down his face, closing his eye shut before he opened it again, looking to Morgan.

"Its why I know you're better...why I know I can trust you. You made the right choice...you had the power to make it...they can't hold onto you anymore...just like they can't hold onto me..." he said as his eyes began to flutter a bit, feeling himself being pulled back to sleep. "You got strength Morgan...your chains...they'll break...just gotta...let em break..." his eyes closed, and a moment later he was back asleep, the sedatives now going full force to keep the krogan calm and under control. The readouts said he'd be awake in a few minutes, a small timer counting down as it continued to monitor his bioreadings.

"All right, you one-ton killing machine," Morgan said, even though Vayne couldn't hear him at that point, "Let's just keep those less tough memories to ourselves. Wouldn't want the word out that we were getting soft."  The turian medic came by again to check on Vayne and Morgan took his leave.

Dahlia watched the mass relay grow larger and the ship engage its mass core for relay transit. She felt a slight vertigo when that happened, and then things returned to normal. We’re going out of the system. Where are we going? She wondered, and in a matter of seconds the ship exited the relay system.

She stood, walked to the door, and exited Naleena’s cabin. What should I do? There are few people on the ship I know, and all these Turians. Hmm… Perhaps I’ll go visit Jess, but I’m hungry. She went over to the ship’s galley and grabbed a nutrition bar, walked around the corner to Jess’ quarters, and buzzed.

Omega Nebula, Sahrabarik System, aboard the Khukuri

Iyana exited the fighter in a flight suit.  She stepped deftly onto the pressurized landing deck, where Xhuan, Jrudek and Golt waited.  Iyana removed her helmet, shook her hand through her white hair, and strode in perfect form towards the three.

“Well?”

Xhuan responded immediately, “Here is a datapad with everything we have so far on the woman associated with Morgan, and the information has been uploaded to your personal terminal as well.  In short, she is a pirate captain, with a crew and a ship.”

Iyana took the datapad from Xhuan, briefly scrolling through the displayed information.  “Not at the helm of her own vessel.  I presume we are attempting to locate the Medusa?”

“It has already been found.  The ship was surprisingly easy to locate.”

“Well done,” Iyana complimented and handed the datapad back to Xhuan.  “I will peruse the information in my quarters at length.  What of the Audron?”

“The turian frigate has passed through the Relay.  They remain unaware of us; to them we are simply another mercenary vessel.”

Peering over to Jrudek, Iyana asked,  “Anything to add?”

The batarian shook his head to indicate he did not.

Iyana patted Jrudek on the shoulder and began to walk past Golt without acknowledging the krogan, until he began to watch her move by.  Abruptly she stopped and turned to face him.

Golt became nervous, furrowing his brow for a split second, then put his weight forward.

Iyana observed him with emotionless blue eyes, peeked down at Golt’s feet, then stared straight back at the krogan.  With her side to him, she placed her nearest foot well inside his personal space, so that her shoulder was a fraction of a centimeter away from Golt’s jaw.

The krogan’s mouth twitched, and his lips parted to bear his teeth, but he moved backwards.

Not a sound was uttered by anyone on the landing deck.  Once again, Iyana glanced down at Golt’s feet and back into the krogan’s eyes.  She waited as Golt breathed more rapidly.

Then she stepped in again.

Golt’s face broke into a silent snarl.  His fists opened and closed.  He swallowed deeply.  Yet Iyana stood perfectly still, unblinking, frozen.  Golt moved back once again.

“Hm,” Iyana expressed with scorn, “We understand each other.”

Golt snorted in disgust, then nodded.

“Good.  Xhuan, accompany me.”

This time, Golt avoided watching Iyana as she strode past and to the elevator nearby.  Xhuan followed just behind.  When they had gotten on board the elevator and the door closed, Iyana rolled her glance to the asari with the unique facial markings.

“How do I look, my hawk?”

Xhuan likewise avoided Iyana’s gaze.  “You’re injured.  I can tell from the perspiration starting to show on your brow and from your forced movement.”

“At least someone around here is worth what they are paid.  Now I have to contend with the loss of two agents.  Menaj was expendable.  But Morgan…Morgan.  “Iyana sighed melodramatically.  “He was worthwhile.”

“Do you not wish to pursue the Audron, my superior?”

Iyana smiled, “I find your manner delectable, Xhuan.  So much so I would eat you up.  Would you meld with me one day I wonder?  Would you let me drink you?”

Xhuan said nothing, though shifted noticeably in discomfort.

Without waiting for a reply, Iyana cackled, “Of course not!  You are of too much use to me.  You who are so loyal.  Do not worry, I have others…provided you did as I wished.  Have you obtained my standard prize from that rock Omega?”

“Yes, of course.  The young maiden waits within your cabin.  She was an easy purchase.  And she is willing to do as you require.”

“I can always count on you, Xhuan.  As far as the Audron goes, no for now.  We are in search of another kind of prey at the moment.  You’ll have a list of tasks I wish you to perform for me within the next few hours, after I’ve had my reward.  There are some strings that need to be cut.  We can’t have roguish behavior going unanswered.  What would that do to The Shadow Broker’s business?”

The elevator door opened to a short hallway ending at the only room on the deck, Iyana’s cabin.  Iyana dismissed Xhuan and stepped out of the elevator alone.  As she did, she allowed the painful limp of her wounded foot to return, and made her way to the cabin door.  When Iyana opened the door to her opulent chamber, she saw a young asari in a gown sitting upon her couch.  The asari stood immediately, a look of surprise on her face at the agony Iyana showed.

“Are you all right?” the young asari asked.

Iyana let her pain show.  She hissed slightly as she made her way to the couch.  The young asari quickly came around to assist.  As Iyana was lowered to sit, she praised her helper, “Darling that is so kind of you.  Yes, it was an unfortunate accident that occurred, but I assure you I can recover with the proper care.  What is your name, dear?”

“Lailu.  Really, perhaps you should get help.  I can do that for you.”

“No, darling…Lailu.  All you need to do is get me out of this flight suit.  And perhaps we can come to know each other a little bit better…”

Anika heard the door buzz and put down her rags. Her armour was white once more and sparkled from the cleaning it had received. Heading to the door she opened it and saw Dahlia waiting. "Oh. Hi". Anika greeted her feeling a warm feeling in her gut. Down girl, she thought to herself. "Your Dahlia right? I.....". She paused. She had been about to say she'd caught sight of her in Naleena's meld but caught herself. "I don't think we've been formally introduced.... I'm Anika". She held out a hand.

Jess was still standing behind Aelias. Doing so for so long that she was becoming nervious. Peeking around she saw Jess staring off into the distance seemingly lost in thought.

"Aelias to Captain Silver". Jess looked down at Aelias where she sat. "Your drifting".

"Sorry luv. Just thinking..... it maybe time to call my ship back".

"Excuse me"?

"My ship". Jess went on. "I signed on to use my connection's to point Deidrus in the right direction of where to look. If this lead pans out, that's it. Job done. Much as I enjoy the company, I've got to get back to my crew at some point. Can't keep swanning around a ship I can't be captain of. I'd go crazy and Deidrus would probably fire me out a torpedo tube when we start to butt heads......".

Jess trailed off. While it had always been her plan to follow through and leave at the first opportunity, she had to admit,  what they were doing was almost enough to tempt her to stay..... almost.....

No profit.

That was always what it came down to in the end. Profit for her and those who followed her. Because profit meant being able to afford a future. And everyone wanted a future were they could live as they desired...... Right?

Jess touched Aelias's shoulder. "Try to connect to my ship. I'll give you the private frequency. Then route it to my terminal in my quarter's".

She turned and walked away towards the deck lift, trying hard to feel like what she doing was the right thing.

Morgan had left Vayne to go to the armory where his first order of business was to check in on the shotgun the krogan mentioned.  The second order of business was to sort his mind.  When he got to the spacious and tidy armory, he was directed to one of the weapon fabrication tables by a turian performing standard maintenance on several Phaestons.

The Audron had apparently spared no expense when it came to weapons fabrication.  The fabricator was suspended above the table, and was top of the line.  Three already assembled Phaestons were lined up with precision along the left side of the table’s surface.  The captured shotgun was perfectly centered, and its distinct design was apparent.  Morgan noted how heavy it looked, and that it did have some sort of enhanced thermal dump.  He picked up the hefty weapon and looked it over before placing it next to the Phaestons and leaving the table clear in front of him.

Morgan then spun a desktop video screen towards himself and pulled up the information on the planet Duellos.  He studied it in detail, saying out loud, “I know this kind of place.”  Morgan then turned the fabricator on and scrolled through the pre-programmed weapons.  The database was bereft of almost anything non-turian.  Morgan sighed when he particularly noted that the only heavy pistol entered into the database was a Brawler.  This will have to do, he thought.  He instructed the fabricator to begin producing the weapon.

The fabricator began its task, moving itself to a position low over the table.  It assembled each component of the Brawler from industrial plastics, alloys and ceramics.  The process would take several minutes.  Though the machine was advanced enough to be able to produce the weapon fully assembled, Morgan wanted to put it together manually.

While he waited, Morgan’s couldn’t help but have his mind wander to Jess.  Son of a b**ch what is wrong with you? he scolded himself.  Distractions weren’t what he needed and the woman was wild, far more wild than he was used to.  She’d followed him and if she hadn’t, Morgan reminded himself that he probably wouldn’t have made it out alive.  Of course, that was part of the problem.
