Eteon strode away from Bean's new quarter's.
This was getting out of hand.
She was already getting a reputation for finding people who were..... unconventional, to join Deidrus's team. There was a rumour going around that it was a case of like attracting like. Not that she cared..... But the conversation's that were in full swing, only to stop abruptly as she entered a room was starting to gnaw at her sense of wellbeing. The complaint's were getting worse as well. Silver's taking over the XO's quarter's being a particular highlight as he'd moved into regular bunking with five other crewmen. Those crewmen were now especially annyoed as they now had nowhere to relax with the eye's of the XO on them constantly. She'd suggested swapping shift's so that they'd pass each other by but the XO had caught wind and stopped that plan dead. Something about showing the troops he was 'one of them'.
Spirit's.... She'd bet Jess had manipulated him into it.
She ran a hand over and under the neck of her armour to rub a particularly tense spot as she walked back to her quarters. Entering she saw a a dress wrapped in transparency that Jess had sent over while on Omega. Sealing the door behind her she walked upto and gazed at the fabric. Turian's don't do dresses, she'd told Jess. Then again, she wasn't average. And the cut was unlike anything she'd ever seen before.
She snorted and turned her back. Now wasn't the time. Walking to her work terminal she activated the comm. "Aelias"?
"Eteon. You know how I'm the ear's of the Audron".
"Yeeees".
A pause. "Lately.... my ear's have been burning. If it's not complaint's about our new crew or an inbred local trying to get through to the space port..... Which I was never consulted on by the way!....". A long sigh came over the comm. "Anyway. People are talking about you".
Eteon laughed. "Tell me something I don't know".
"Their talking about me too now".
"What"?
"I got a dress from Jess".
Eteon palm slid over her eye's as she shook her head.
"Anyway. The DA compound's chatter has gone through the roof. The port Authority seem to have caught on I'm interecepting their transmissions from the DA and now they really want to know what we've been upto while we've been here. And the XO's shouting at everyone again.... Other than that.... How's your day been"?
"Aelias..... Tag Bean's shuttle for retreival and send out some recovery shuttles. Tell the XO this one's on me. And when he asks why tell him that we have at least two annoying engineer's on board and a crashed shuttle might keep them off everyone's back".
"....... Your sneaky".
"I'm thirsty too". Eteon said. "It was hot outside..... I'm going into town. Getting a drink".
"Don't pick up anything while your out". Aelias teased.
"With my track record...... no promises".

The Encounter: Pt 1 – The Report
A young man with red hair and blue eyes got off his hover bike and ran into the Sheriff’s office. The Sheriff floated behind his desk with a cowboy hat on his head and two tentacles crossed and resting on the desk. The Sheriff radiated an aura of confidence that struck fear in the hearts of his enemies. He had a gun for every tentacle, and he’d been able to maintain order with an iron… tentacle. Well he had to in a place like this. At least that’s what he thought. Shoot first and ask questions later. Deputy Daog, on the other hand, he saw as a weak link, but one that could be trained perhaps in more ruthless tactics. Still Daog somehow got the job done using more investigative means.
The young man was out of breath. “Sheriff! We found two of our guards murdered at the gates of the Drowned Aspire compound! Samacen said that the inspectors did it.”
“Wait a minute! This one requires that you slow down your speech so that it makes sense. This one requires the entire story.” The Sheriff floated toward the young man.
“A group of people led by a Captain Stone said they were testing the area for thresher maws. Samacen sent two runners here earlier to check their credentials. They didn’t make it. I saw their bodies on the ground on the way here. Apparently the group anticipated this and had someone waiting to stop them.” The young man said while catching his breath. He was still speaking rapidly but was slowing down.
“This one needs to know about the guards and why you suspect this group,” the Sheriff asked. “This one needs to know why they were so interested in the site of the Enkindlers.”
“I can tell you what Samacen told me. Since the group arrived, there has been nothing but trouble within the compound. That red-headed woman from town went on a rampage looking for her tools, which unfortunately she found but not after taking matters into her own hands instead of speaking with Samacen first, “ the young man said while pacing around the office. “Then we found drugs being used by one of our long-time technicians. All that kind of stuff is taken from people as they enter and destroyed. We have no need for that. Brother Jeb preaches peace and preparation for the dark times that are approaching. Next were the murders of the gate guards: both killed with broken necks; one pushed over the outer edge of the wall to make it look like an accident.
“A few of the ‘Thresher Maw’ experts came heavily armed. Three of them went into the shrine with Brother Jeb, and they brought their weapons with them.”
The Sheriff shuddered in anger. “This one thanks you for your report. They have desecrated the Shrine of the Enkindlers and committed murder. This one will gather a posse to go after them and render justice upon them like this one has others.” The Sheriff pressed the intercom button. “Deputy Daog, step into this one’s office.”
In a few moments, the Drell entered. “What do you want, Sheriff?”
“This one is going to gather a posse to go after people who have desecrated the Shrine of the Enkindlers,” the Sheriff said, “This one leaves you in charge of the town.”
“As you wish, Sheriff,” Daog replied.
The Sheriff turned to the young man. “This one wishes you to follow it. You are this one’s first posse member. Grab a weapon. You will follow this one as we gather others.”
And soon the Sheriff had gathered 13 posse members made up of the four remaining members of Tardek’s gang, five humans, a Krogan, and three Turians. They mounted their hover-bikes and rode out of town toward the spot where they would set up an ambush.

The Shootout: Part 2
Just outside of town, the Sheriff saw the rock outcropping growing larger. The road to the DA went right through the middle of the outcropping. It was a kill zone. He raised a tentacle ordering his men to slow and spread out.
“This one orders you to hide your bikes in the brush and take cover behind those rocks,” he said, “This one thinks this is the ideal place for the ambush. The criminals will have grown complacent and think they have it made. We shall show them otherwise.”
“Won’t they suspect something is up?” one of the posse members asked.
“Why would they? Just be quiet and open fire on them when this one gives the signal,” the Sheriff said, “They will not know what hit them, and this one will add their bodies to the wall as an example to others. Now be quick about it.”
The posse ditched their bikes and took cover behind the rocks as instructed. Soon they could see the dust being kicked up by the mecha-steeds approaching.
~ ~ ~ ~
Morgan had eased up to the point of joining the group again with Dahlia. Apparently riding in silence was in, and Morgan did his best to enjoy the ride. Everybody was still together.
It probably wouldn’t last. The outskirts of the town were becoming clearer. With the distance a person could see on Duellos, it was never out of sight during the day, but the buildings could be made out now. There were even clouds of dust indicating activity outside of town.
Morgan brought up alongside Jess. Rather than break the peace, he gave her a look of knowing approval. Whatever was behind the Captain’s appearance, if anything, wasn’t something Morgan was privy to, but he had a bit of an idea now. An admiration had grown within him for her, aside from other feelings he did his best to keep aside, particularly since the future was so uncertain.
Anika wasn’t nearby, and Morgan considered what she must be going through with Naleena. At some point, everyone would know. And then there would be a parting of ways.
But why?
“What a daydream to think,” Morgan accidentally blurted aloud. Why they couldn’t all stay together was because of the Audron, of course, and the Spectre. Where the ship went, so did the mission. The Collectors, and all the threat that came with them, were of course the priority. But even with what happened at the compound, they weren’t personally for Morgan. He was never the type who could do anything for the greater good.
Survival was first. And there hadn’t been time for much else beyond that, as much as he would have liked there to be. The dust cloud appeared to subside. Morgan used his Kuwashii visor to magnify his vision. It was difficult to make out visually at range, but his heads-up display assisted with data assessment. Morgan frowned. It seemed there was a group of hover bikes, breaking up and heading out of sight. He caught a glimpse of one of the bike silhouette which was much larger, really a car or a trike, something with the front of a bike and an open compartment in the rear. It glinted momentarily in the sun. Whatever was in that open compartment was tall enough to stand out from it, pink and glistening.
Befuddled, Morgan exclaimed, “Is that a hanar?”
Gunfire erupted from behind the rocks. Some of the rounds hit the dirt in front of the steeds, and some hit the steeds. One round hit Naleena and knocked her off her steed. It was in her armor, and she managed to crawl behind one of the rocks on the left side of the road. She rubbed her left shoulder for a moment, and then pulled her sniper rifle and flipped the IR scope and scanned the area.
Irina dismounted, dragging Zenon behind her. She stayed crouched and moved to her right. Zenon still had the Phalanx pistol.
“Zenon, just stay low and watch my back,” Irina said, “Don’t try to be a hero. Stay behind the rocks. They’re going to try to keep us pinned down and circle around behind us. So watch the terrain off to our right, and let me know if you see any movement.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Zenon said and smiled at Irina.
“You’re alright, kid.” Irina said as she began to lay down suppressing fire.
Dahlia saw that Naleena was hit. “Naleena!” she shouted from her position near Morgan.
“I’m alright. I count 14 of them!” Naleena said, “One is the Sheriff.”
Lost in her own world, a world where she was trying to think what she should do concerning her return to the Medusa, Jess was taken completely by surprise when those up ahead cried out. She looked up in time to see Naleena fall as her steed rode on before registering the loss of it's rider. It came to a slow halt and stood, waiting.
Jess then saw her shield belt flare as a bullet aimed right between her eye's was caught...... as the barrier dissipated she had already flung her steed into a tight turn and she heard more weapons fire erupt from above. As concerned as she was
for her life she was also concerned for her steed. Unlike her it was not shielded, and carried the data from the compound.
And from what she had seen..... the steed's speed was the only thing keeping them ahead of the processed..... collectorfied..... Numan's?
They needed a name. Her shield caught another round and her belt vibrated indicating imminent failure. She should probably concentrate. A recess offered the only cover for Baldurjack and she ran him towards it, sliding him so that his flank banged into the side wall. Then she was off and running towards rock cover of her own as weapons fire danced around her zig zag dash. Her vision flared and her belt beeped indicating it was cycling having lost it's barrier charge. She dove forward, arms out flying through the air towards the nearest cover and half rolled, half flung herself behind a rock formation where she scrambled back towards the protection it offered. Breathing hard her hands went down to her pistols and came up one short.
Looking back she saw Sinbad lying on the ground, not far, but far wnough that she'd be riddled if she tried to get it. Looking up she saw those that followed and waved them back. "Go around"! She screamed as Bernard appeared in her grip. The pistol snapping into it's ready position with a snap as if eager to return what was coming their way. "Stay back and go around"!
A round winged off her cover sending rock chip and dust flying. Jess waited, trying to get a feel of where the shots were shots coming from and when they were likely to reload.......
Screw concentration. They were trying to kill her. She pulled out a grenade.
Anika saw what was happening and made to charge forward when she heard Jess calling out for them to stay back. She bit her lip, then took off on her steed off to the left looking for a way up to the tops of the rocky pass.
Loathe as she was to admit it Jess was right. Walking into that area was like being a fish in a barrel. They needed to pull the heat off those who were caught and hope they could survive long enough for them live.
Pulling to the side of the pass where an outcrop shielded her from incoming fire she planted her hands on the steed and brought her feet up and onto it's saddle before leaping up the rock wall. Her genetic enhancement saw her half way up before gravity tried to take hold. Scrambling, she found hand holds and hauled herself up. Reaching the top she rolled herself up and raised her head to take a quick look around.
Movement caught her attention she reached behind her back for the collector rifle. They were two and making a long trip around them to attack the group from behind. Not while she drew breath.
Rising up and planting the rifle to her shoulder she smiled at the absensse of safety catch Collector weapons lacked and triggered a beam of yellow energy that slammed into the man at the rear. The smell of meat came wafting through the air following on from the man's scream. Anika shifted her aim to send the beam skewing across to hit his friend. He however saw what was happening and had the presence of mind to drop down. The beam lancing over his head.
The Collector rifle was growing hot in her hands and suddenly it shut down with a fading ringing tone.
Dammit.
The one left alive was standing with his mouth agape, rattled as he looked at his friend whose body had fallen to the ground at odd angles, his body nearly cut clean in two.
Anika roared and charged, bearing down on the man.
The man looked up to see a seven foot woman in a poncho and sombrero bearing down on him with a gun that was leaving smoke trails in her wake.
His courage failed. He turned and ran.

From behind a large set of boulders in the outcrop, Naleena found a flat spot where she could lay prone. She contacted Morgan on communicator. "Morgan, there are two tangos circling on your left. I can't get a shot at them, but I've got themon IR. They're about 30 meters from you. Steady.... Steady.... Take them."
"Acknowledged. Thanks," Morgan said, and he turned to face his attackers.
Then she turned and saw a Turian aiming a Krysae at Jess' direction. She had him in her sights and two shots rang out from her Black Widow piercing the Turian's skull. She recycled her weapon.
++++++
Vayne had been in his own thoughts before he saw naleena get nailed and a barrage of rounds go off. He snarled as he tried
to look ahead, but couldn't get the chance with the rounds firing off so quickly that his shields had been widdled down to
almost 1/2 in the short time it'd taken him to draw his gun.
"S***!" he exclaimed as he moved the steed off the road, heading towards a lone outcropped rock before his shields read
they were dangerously close to failing. He looked around a moment, needing some cover when an idea came to him, and he
pushed himself off the side of his mecha-steed. He ducked low as he used the heavy mech-horse as a walking cover, rounds
pinging off its sides as he walked to the outcropping or rocks and got behind them.
He looked to the others, not sure how many made it to cover and how many had been taken down by this ambush. "Whoever's
shooting better have a coffin picked out." he commented as he opened up his omni-tool.
++++++++++
Vayne cycled through his omni-tool until he found what he was looking for, getting his omnibow ready with its concussive
arrows. The gunfire had died a tiny bit, and the krogan looked to the rocks as he couldn't help but grin. Bad as this
situation was, he'd at least picked a good set of armor for it.
Vayne got out of cover and aimed his wrist, arrows laser lining up with one of the men who thought he'd be easy to pick off and had stood up from his covered position to get better aim. The arrow fired and head the man right in the throat, and he fell back as his windpipe compacted in on itself, blood vessels popping from the blunt force trauma, as the person next to him looked down in shock.
Vayne aimed his shotgun pistol and fired, the round thundering out as a cloud of steam poured from the heatclip, quickly cooling the coils as the powerful round punched a sizable chunk of rock at the distracted shooter. The shooter was blasted to the ground as the debris flew at him, pelting him with what would definably leave a considerable bruise, but little else. Clutching his welting shoulder in pain, he began to try and scramble away, deciding he'd had enough of this entire fiasco.
Vayne meanwhile was now back behind his steed, breathing heavily as he winced slightly, examining his now dented up breastplate and leggings. Thank god his armor was tungsten made, or he'd had been resembling krogan cheese right about now, bleeding and slightly irradiated.
~ ~ ~ ~
A near miss yanked the hat off Morgan’s head. He activated his tech armor and ducked in his saddle. Vayne’s move to cover behind his mecha-steed was a distraction that helped Morgan, who spurred his mount into a gallop and pulled to the side. The terrain, a pass through high rocks, provided plenty of cover for the attackers.
Jess rode ahead of Morgan. He saw her dismount, fling herself in the direction of a rock formation, and shout to stay back and go around. It was too late for Morgan as the shooting was already heading his way. He spotted Sinbad, the pistol he had assembled for her, dropped and sitting in the open.
An idea crossed Morgan’s mind that if he had actually thought about, would never have become a reality. Morgan pushed his mount onward. Shots hit his mecha-steed and tech armor. He slid slightly off the steed to the far side of the incoming fire and headed for Sinbad. Concentrating, the world around Morgan slowed, and he reached down to snatch the pistol as he passed. With no room for error, in a split second, he grabbed Sinbad and flung it Jess’s way. The arc was perfect and the pistol landed next to her foot safely.
It would have worked magnificently if the ambushers were only using guns. Racing past Jess and her position, Morgan was righting himself in the saddle when he was hurled from his mount by an unseen force. He crashed into the rock face nearby, stunning him and collapsing his tech armor. The steed kept going and Morgan fell to the ground in the open. Dazed, and unsure exactly what he was hit by, Morgan had enough of his wits about him to roll behind an adjacent outcropping.
Smelling blood, the two ambushers Naleena had warned about advanced on Morgan. One was carrying a rocket launcher. Morgan lost himself as a survival mechanism took over that went beyond even his enhanced state of awareness. His Kovalyov lost with his steed, Morgan drew the Scimitar shotgun and started laying down blasts at his foes from the ground. Taken over by sheer impulse, his aim suffered, but the amount of projectiles he sent forth was withering. The ambusher with a standard rifle fired and hit Morgan in the shoulder, but it didn’t even slow him down. Morgan rent the ambusher with phasic shells that passed through his shields. The body of the attacker went to pieces.
The second ambusher fired his rocket launcher. Morgan was able to hit him directly in the head with the Scimitar before the rocket impacted. It went wide, but Morgan was unable to avoid the blast. He was pitched again, this time to the side and across the battlefield.
Ears ringing and vision out of focus, wherever Morgan landed, he wasn’t shot at. An unknown companion shouted out, and Morgan raised his hand to indicate he was okay, although he hadn’t made a point to check. Morgan could feel the medigel squeeze into his suit and he looked down to make sure there were no major parts of him missing. Everything was where it was supposed to be, though blackened or smoldering. Morgan fumbled for the shotgun, which landed next to him. He had to keep checking his body from the sheer shock that he was still alive.
++++++
Dahila let loose with a shockwave that sent flying a couple of the attackers that were hiding behind the rocks, stunning them when they landed. The first one was a batarian. He recovered from his flight quickly and aimed his Kishock at Dahlia. She charged, staggering the Batarian and fired her claymore point blank, killing him instantly. His squadmate fled to a vantage point behind rocks further up into the outcrop. Dahlia took pursuit, and had him pinned down.
Naleena saw the man, so she cloaked and slipped around several small rock outcrops, and several plants that resembled cacti. She had to be careful not to get in anyone's line of fire. This was more difficult than it seemed, however she managed to get behind one of the posse members, that had failed morale. She drew her dagger, grabbed him, threw him to the ground which caused her to decloak.
++++++
"Irina! Look out!" Zenon shouted. She went prone like Irina had told her earlier, and fired her pistol over at something moving in what resembled sagebrush. Her shots went wide but the person moving in them ducked and rolled behind a nearby rock.
"Thanks!" Irina rolled and took a different position near her, fired her Mattock at the rock and motioned for Zenon to stay put and keep firing. She handed her two thermal clips, and signaled that she was going to circle back and right. "Remember, Zenon, no more than two or three shots and then duck back into cover, and keep the timing random. He's going to be watching for you. Change your shot angle to the other side of the rock, too."
Zenon nodded.
Irina kept low to the ground in a crouch run, and Zenon layed down suppressing fire. She wasn't hitting anything except terrain nearby the enemy, but it was good enough to keep his attention. Irina had him in her sights, and noticed he wasn't alone. She wanted both of them. 'Keep the heat on, Zenon.' She drew her shotgun and crept crouch ran up close to the first one, rolled and let him have the first barrel in the face from five feet. She rolled to the side, and his partner moved away just as she fired the second barrel. Irina reloaded, and pursued him into the desert, but not too far; just far enough to have him pinned down away from the main group. Then he decided to slip back into town. She kept an eye on him just in case he changed his mind.
++++++
Jess kept her head down as a small scale war seemed to erupt around her. People were charging, people were running, shouting, darting away, seeking shelter, looking for advantage. And here she was behind a rock as tall as her waist with her back to the sun warmed surface sat on her backside with her head tucked while shots rained down where she hiding. Morons and idiots. That was who they were fighting. They were actively shooting up a rock right now. Of course.... they had enough sense to rotate their firing. One seemed to empty a clip and the other one took over keeping her pinned. It occured to her that that, was their purpose. Keep her penned in and pinned down while other came up from behind and negated the cover advantage.
Things were crazy. Morgan had thrown her Sinbad and he was now nestled in her grip while Bernard was holstered to her thigh. A type 14 grenade with the fins extended ready and waiting for it's time to make it's presence known. Things were crazy. She'd lost track of everyone as they left her field of vision. Maybe they were dead and she was all that was left.
When things got crazy, assume the worst, hold nothing back. Her shield belt chimed and a barrier shimmered around her before going back into hot standby mode. A round would trigger it. It had taken three shots to bring it down. She could do this. Breathing hard into her respirator she flooded her lungs with oxygen, feeding her blood, halting the rising adrenaline spike, giving her back the use of her limbs as she focused on the sound of gunfire. Waiting...... waiting......
The gunfire increased as the first gun's chatter was added to by a second. Still Jess waited, and sure enough, the gunfire petered out to just one again.
Guessing it meant one of the two men up above was reloading Jess pulled her feet under her and half ran, half leapt out of her cover. The time in cover had allowed her to get a good idea of where the two opponent's were and she'd already zero'd in on where they lay atop the rocks even as her arm was drawn back to throw the grenade. The man above saw her leave cover and his SMG followed her even as her arm completed it's swing and the grenade flew even as her barrier lit up from the gun fire.
She felt a stinging pain in her left arm and her barrier was no longer shining as she hit the ground and rolled to the side, against the wall the two opponent's sat upon. Bringing up her synthetic arm her Omnitool was up and she jabbed a finger from the hand holding Sinbadm, at the detonation controller. Noticing as she did that something hot and sticky was running down something somewhere......
The ridge above exploded and two figures flew up and into the pass as rocks came crashing down that mingled with the sceams of terror. Or pain. Or both Jess hoped. The rocks came down amoung the bodies hiding the wet sounds of bodies being mushed and Jess sank backwards. Lancing pain was beginning to registerand she looked over to her left arm and saw a deep graze from one of the SMG rounds that had come close to smashing into her shoulder joint. Like she needed to lose another arm.
Gritting her teeth she pulled herself up. Gunfire was intermittant. It sounded like things were resolving themselves. For good or for ill for her and her group she didn't know as she slapped a hand over her wound.
Anika.
Anika had the medigel. She had to find her. Maybe the other's too if they hadn't been killed by the ambush.
She staggered out looking for her companions. Morgan and Naleena were the closest ones to her, she thought. She glanced again, and only Morgan was in sight.
"Dammit!"
The breeze picked up and blew dust across the road in front of her. Alto stratus clouds blocked out the sun giving a moment of relief in Duellos' high desert plain. Jess looked straight ahead, and 30 paces away on the road hovered the most feared being in the colony: the Sheriff.
Coming Soon: The Showdown with the Sheriff!

Essul flew through space calmly as he rolled his neck slightly, wincing in pain as he closed his eyes tightly and gritted his teeth. His headaches were starting to come on, which meant it was time for him to once again take his treatments. He sighed as he reached for a small armored back, setting his ship to autopilot as he opened the injection gun up, sticking it to his neck and pulling the trigger. An empty vial in the gun filled almost all the way with his blood, the liquid sloshing a bit as he got out the slightly reddish mixture from one of 10 vials in his armored case. He took a few tiny miligrams from his vial, barely depleting it as he set the gun to mix and waited.
He hated this medication, he hated the thought of his body being deficient in such a way that he needed to inject things into himself to keep him functional. But that was exactly the case, and essul could feel his headaches slowly travelling down his spine, a sign his condition was flaring up as the injector gun said it was fully mixed. Essul pressed the gun to his neck and pulled, feeling the liquid shoot into his veins. He placed everything back with a grunt, waiting for the serum to take affect and dull the pain down again as he turned off the autopilot of his ship, seeing it approaching its destination.
::Attention Spacecraft, this is Illium Space Defense. Please Identify yourself and your business here::
"This is the MSV Caracara, coming in for some refueling and recreational activities. Sending information and clearance now." Essul said as he accessed his operation fund and deducted some credits, sending it through to the ground control below along with his ships diagnostic information.
After a few moments of silence, the voice came back.
::Identification Confirmed. MSV Caracara you are cleared for landing. Proceed to platform 57A, and enjoy your stay.::
"Have to love the terminus systems..." Essul said as his headache began to dull, the medication taking effect as he piloted the ship towards illiums hot atmosphere. He activated the internal controls of the ships atmosphere, setting it to cool as he descended downwards. Illium could get really hot, and he didn't want to be ruining one of his black suits for his meeting with his broker contact by sweating up a storm in his cockpit.
After all, first impressions were always important, when one was dealing with information no one wanted getting out, or being looked into, as his case may be.

The Gunfight: Final Scene
The breeze howled through the surrounding rocks and brush creating an eerie feeling. Distant thunder could be heard from the mountains far off in the distance, but that was normal Duellos weather in the high plains. Jess was hurt, but she was not out of it. The Sheriff was the last one remaining of the posse. Dressed in a long dusty coat with her hat long since blown away. Blood dripped off her knuckle as Jess faced the Hanar in her way.
“Hey luv..... Been waiting long”?
The Hanar's tentacles swayed under it's body as it's serene voice amplified out for all to hear. “This one enquires as to the criminal scums name before the criminal scum is made example of to other criminal scum”.
Jess smirked. “I object to scum. It's Stone. Or Captain Silver to you. And not to go all school yard on you but you were the one who attacked us. We fought back in self defence”.
“The criminal scums protesation's are one's this one has heard before. This one is unmoved and shall bring the criminal to justice”.
“Look yah Blasto wannabe I've not got time to play! I need to get to town. We need an evacuation! There's a horde of.... Numans....”. Needs a better name, Jess thought furiously as she went on. “....Converted humans the Aspire took and made into collector's..... We've got evidence if you'll just see it”!
“And when this one's back is turned the criminal shall attempt a violent solution to our standoff? This one call's out to yourself regarding your excrement”.
“We have evidence yah..... Big...... Stoooo-pid....... Jellybabe wannabe”!
A faint whisp of air blew past them. Trying vainly to stir the dust that would not be moved.
“This one has been in this situation before and has won. Notice the corpses along the walls of the town,” the Sheriff said. “This one has information that you have desecrated the Shrine of the Enkindlers within the Drowned Aspire. This one has also learned that someone in your party has committed the crime of murder within that compound. For that you must die.
“But this one is not unreasonable. This one will settle this matter with a duel. If you win, you and your entire team will be free. But if you lose, your team will surrender to this one, Deputy Daog, and the other deputies.” The Sheriff pulled out a pocket clock. “When the chimes end, draw your weapon and try to kill this one, if you can.”
“We don't have to do this luv”.
Morgan, nearby and only then able to painfully get up, witnessed the standoff in front of him. He readied his shotgun but waited.
“This one does not share the criminal's opinion on the matter”.
“We have evidence”!
“Then this one shall float over your corpse and examine the evidence. If the criminal is telling the truth, you shall have a place on the wall for desecrating the shrine of the enkindler's. If the criminal is lying...... the fate is the same. The criminal's future does not matter and this one will know the truth. This is the justice that keeps this one's town in a state of peace. This one has a town where this one is the law. When this one declares another a criminal, there are no appeals”.
The chimes on the clock began to slow and come to an end, and the Sheriff’s tentacle began to twitch.
Naleena climbed over a rock and walked into the area holding an identical pocket clock with an identical chime. She held her Black Widow on the Sheriff, and had a cigar in her mouth.
“And there will be no biotics used in this duel,” Naleena said, “I know how you win, Sheriff. You know this rifle will blow right through your barrier, so this will be a fair, straight up duel.” She glanced over at Morgan.
Morgan raised his chin. If the law wanted to settle the matter with a duel, having a record of what was happening would be critical if there were questions later. He voice activated his omni-tool to record what was unfolding. After that, Morgan simply said to Jess, “Make sure that holster is tight to your thigh.”
“Now we start,” Naleena said, and she sat on a rock with her Black Widow aimed at the Sheriff’s head.
The Sheriff momentarily shot a glare at Naleena, and then focused on Jess. He studied her eyes.
Jess stood stock still waiting out the Hanar. The Hanar did the same. Jess cleared her throat. “I don't want anyone interfering. He want's me, he's going to get me”.
“The criminal scum's assessment is accurate. This one will indeed”.
The chimes slowed and ended... Both stared at each other as the wind picked up once more. Stones on the ground rattled as the thin wind grew, channeled through the pass blowing away from where they had all come towards the port town.
A small pebble got caught under the draft and flipped.
The Hanar's tentacle lashed to one of it's guns and whipped around the grip lightening fast as Karme's hand dropped towards Sinbad. Sinbad emerged in a fast clean action and the gun was unfolded as Sinbad's muzzle drew up, past the ground, past the tentacle's that still dangled as the weapon began to reach the Hanar's central core.
There was a sharp crack and Sinbad went off from the impact of the Sheriff's round impacting her. Her shield flared but the round seemed to cut through it like it wasn't there. It hit something and pain flared even as she was being thrown backwards. The ground rushing up to meet her as she looked forward and saw one of the Sheriff's tentacles falling away from the core mass. A short stump near where they emerged and a keening wail of something Jess didn't understand.
Then the ground impacted her and she found herself sprawled on the ground. Sinbad was dangling in her hand and she tried to focus on where the pain was coming from.
Her chest hurt and she couldn't seem to suck down a breath. Fumbling she found her repirator had been knocked loose and she brought up her right working hand to reattach it before feeling her left breast.
A small hole was there. Right over the armoured trauma plate that was sewn into her top where her heart was. Sonovabitch had tried to kill her with a shot to the heart. Still alive. But her left arm was now pins and needles. More pins and needles digging into ther back where she'd fallen. Too damn bright. Damn sun and atmosphere. Had to reach for Bernard. Too much time. Moving. Reaching. One...... one who had done this......
A shadow appeared over her and the Sheriff floated into view. “This one appreciates the irony of a criminal scum's partners not interceding on behalf of the criminal scum. This one has gained the reputation of putting an end to the infamous Silver and gained a potent antedote to share over the chance game of Poker this eve”.
Jess coughed and drew her hand away from Bernard. Instead she held it up in the form of a handshake. “Well Luv”. She coughed. “No hard feelings then right? Put in the odd good word for Captain Silver when you get to where your going”.
“This one does not shake....”.
Jess' whole forearm transformed in a split second. The Sheriff was still reacting to the sudden change when her formarm shot forth a spike from the stripped down spike thrower.
The Hanar Sheriff, never saw it coming.
When she looked back on the incident it was much like watching a balloon popping in slow motion Jess decided. The tip pierced and penetrated the Hanars outer membrane, the shock and force dragging it's outside's inside and appeared to turn the Hanar inside out in a spray of pink guts and fluids. Jess brought her arm up to shield herself from the worst of the spray and when it subsided, all that was left of the sheriff was a small puddle, and many tentacles attached to the pierced remains of the Hanar that had once been the Sheriff.
“Put in a good word for Captain Silver luv”. She said again as her arm closed. “Get the feeling I'm going to need it when my times done here”.
Naleena lowered her rifle, slowly claped her hands five times, and smiled at Jess. And in a deadpan voice she said, "Bravo."

Jess was lying on the ground propping up herself on her good elbow. Naleena stood and put her gun across her back, and approached Jess. She knelt, reached into her pouch and pulled out a pack of medi-gel and flask of whiskey. "Good work. I thought we'd lost you for a second. Looks like you could use these." She handed both to Jess. "Good thing you had that little piece of armor plate sewn in there."

Cluster unknown, System unknown, aboard the Medusa
“This is MSV Montague. Docking for module number four is now complete with the Medusa. Are you prepared to receive, Operative Vampire?”
“We are prepared, Montague,” Iyana responded through her com. “Send them over.”
Iyana stood next to Golt and six of her mercenaries in the forward cargo hold of the Medusa. Luscious was behind and next to Iyana, his wounded arm secured in an ultra-thin ceramic cast. With his emotions quelled at last, Luscious wondered about both who was coming aboard and the modifications being done to the interior of the pirate ship. On one side of the cargo hold, a small stack of containers was marked for delivery. On the other side, electronic equipment, lighting and more paint were set for use. What crates the Medusa had been carrying were secured in a pattern that made no sense to him, creating a labyrinth with barely enough room to fit the two shuttles that had landed. The ship had been unnaturally muted as of late, save for the sounds of the mercenaries relocating objects haphazardly. But as much as Luscious wanted to find out what was occurring, he had learned one rule when dealing with Iyana.
Luscious spoke when Luscious was spoken to.
As if reading his mind, Iyana turned her piercing blue gaze towards Luscious. “I had to find you a loyal crew to captain,” she quipped.
The airlock in the fore of the hold, used for when direct docking was desired away from the bridge, began to cycle. A moment later, green confirmation lights illuminated and the interior airlock door opened.
Through the door stepped a collection of miscreants so motley and riotous that Luscious’ worst, alcohol-fueled nightmares paled in comparison to imagine such a display. One of the women had her face tattooed in midnight blue and she grinned with filed teeth. One of the turians had an elongated left arm that dropped below his knee. An asari constantly flinched and hissed like a feral beast. And they kept coming - hunched over, wild eyed, nonsense babbling beings representing almost all of the known intergalactic species. It was as if Iyana had hand picked the inmates of asylums from across known space and assembled them in one place.
“There, there,” Iyana greeted with a purr in her voice, “Welcome to your new home.”
The new arrivals stared at Iyana in fascination and awe. Some approached to crowd at her feet, while others bowed and at least two howled out like wolves at the moon. Those that stood still glanced about the ship with hungry eyes.
Like a lion tamer, Iyana drew them together, petting some and snapping at others. Luscious had a difficult time counting how many there were; perhaps there were forty, maybe more? The mercenaries shifted uncomfortably, but said nothing. Golt observed stoically, though he caught Luscious’ expression and snorted in amusement.
“These are the gifts that were cast away by their so-called civilizations,” Iyana pronounced. “Their oppressors use words to exclude them from ever having a place amongst others, labeling them perverse, or murderous, or abominable, or psychotic. How dare they? They who made them what they are.”
Iyana put her hand upon the head of one of the men who knelt before her. “I will take care of you, all of you. A vision for your kind and the miracle that you are. You are artists! This ship is yours to perform in.”
One man with a full, black beard and no shirt sniffed at Luscious. As if capturing the scent of something irresistible, he came nearer. Neither Golt or the other mercenaries moved to interfere. The bearded man grunted in anticipation and reached out long fingernail hands.
There was a crack in the air, and a lash of biotic energy swept just in front of the bearded man’s face, causing him to halt. Iyana recoiled her arm as if pulling back a whip.
“That is not food,’ Iyana scolded. ‘It is mine until I say otherwise. So are the rest I have marked.”
The bearded man obeyed and retreated.
Iyana examined Luscious critically. “On this island of a ship, we shall see if you are a Montgomery, or you degenerate to walking on all fours. Some of our newest arrivals have experience with star faring vessels. The rest you will teach. And all will turn on you if you do not follow my law.”
Leaning closer, Iyana parodied a whispered to Luscious, “When it is your ceremony, you think it is perfectly natural.” She then burst out laughing.
In that moment, Luscious decided of all the mad individuals who had come aboard the Medusa, Iyana was the maddest.

Jess took the whisky first and popped the cap for a long draw. Moving it away from her mouth she took a long breath. The feeling in her arm returning.
"Hard won experience luv...... Never leave your valuables where someone can just take them". She winced. "Like a jackhamer going off in the chest though".
She looked back at the remains of the sheriff. "Never actually seen a Hanar die like that. Gah... So much for this coat. I'm covered in him". She looked around. "How'd we do? Any other surviors"? Creening her neck over she spied Morgan and with a grunt, she waved Sinbad at him.
"Morgan! Sinbad's awesome! Bernard wouldn't have cleared the ground before I took that hit! Did you see that tentacle fly"?!?

Morgan had a bit of a laugh escape. He headed to Jess and saw the medigel Naleena gave her was having its effect. The rest of Jess, however, was copiously bestrewn in pink gore.
If Morgan were a hanar, he’d likely be horrified.
Reaching out, Morgan jested, “Don’t shoot me, with Sinbad or any of your other guns,” as he helped pull Jess to her feet with her right arm. She looked as charmingly brash as ever, even with the hanar on her. Once she was up, Morgan took a step back and examined the captain from head to toe.
“How about we take a small break from the crazy, get the lot of us back to the Audron, and get you cleaned up?”

Jess stood looking at Morgan. Then curled her hand into a fist and lightly pushed it into his chest.
"I mean it luv. Thanks for the gun. Thinking maybe it's time to expand what I carry but never thought it was important enough..... Then along comes you and....." Jess sighed. "Well. I guess I've got someone else with me now. Let's get back. I want to think those things stopped chasing us but If I guess right their still running this way. We've lost time with this...... Where's my damn hat"?
Looking around it was clear that it had disappeared somewhere and Jess looked over at the hanar's. "Bloody junk arse hat". Striding over she picked it up and dusted it down while trying to get as much of the Hanar off it as she could. As she wiped the remains off she saw a gleam of metal and the Sheriff's badge of authority shone up at her.
Jess smiled, turned to the group and held it up. "Looks like we just inherited the sheriff's duties. Let's see if we can convince the town to get out of dodge..... Wait..... Where's Anika"?
A shout came from on high and everyone looked up to a poncho'd somberero'd woman with a rifle over one shoulder and a human head in the other standing above them. Anika called down. "We won then"?
Jess blinked and looked back at Morgan and Naleena. "Sometimes...... that woman scares me".

Zenon wandered back with Irina. "Did I do okay?"
"You did fine kid. Better than most, especially considering what you've been through," Irina smiled, "You even knew when to stop firing, which is pretty rare."
"I had to reload," Zenon replied, and she handed the pistol back to Irina.
"Why don't you keep that. I've got another," Irina laughed. "Come on, let's check on our gunfighter." They came out from behind the sagebrush and Jess, Morgan and Naleena came into view. She got a good look at Jess. "So that's what the inside of a hanar looks like? You wear it well, Jess. I really liked the 'big stupid jellybabe' line."
****
Dahlia wandered into the group that was gathering, "Congrats, Jess. Hey, guys? I'm hungry."
Everyone stared at her.
"Hey, you try putting out as much biotics as I did in that place, and then again here and see if your energy doesn't get drained. I need food," she said.

Vayne had been silent for a majority of the time and gave a nod, a look of satisfaction on his face. "Sounds like a plan to me."
"So Irina, where's a good place to catch a bite to eat?" He asked, giving a small laugh as he asked. Getting into a good fight, all of them pulling together for one massive shootout, and getting a nice meal to celebrate.
Just like the good old days.

"I've whipped up some ready made pizza when I made the chilli..... With extra..... cheese...... What? Why are you all looking at me like that? I like to cook! I did some redecorating in the XO's quarter's".
Feeling a little on the spot she called up to Anika. "Get down here! We gotta move"!
She turned to Baldurjack and was a few steps forward when she heard something hit the ground behind her. Startled she looked around and Anika was getting up from squatting on her landing, having simply jumped down. Jess blinked.
"Anika....".
"Yes Captain"?
" You could have left the head".
"Oh"! Anika looked down where it dangled and brought it up to regard. "I forgot i had this". Tossing it over her shoulder she headed to her Mecha-Steed, approaching from the rear, and did a half jump up, half volly and alighted on her saddle. Swinging the Steed around she grinned "I'm really starting to like these frontier towns"!
Jess groaned and whistled for Baldurjack. "And still the Numans are coming".
"What are Numans"?
"Those collector things".
"You named them"?
"It's a work in progress"!
Anika allowed the pause to lengthen. "Why didn't you just call them The Re-Possessed"?
Jess opened her mouth to retort.... but paused. "Damn. That is rather catchy". Shaking her head she turned and mounted her steed. "Up and at em! Can't wait to reach town"!
"Your covered in their Sheriff"!
Jess gave a feral grin. "Can't wait to reach town"! She said again and turned Buldy to begin trotting along, waiting for the rest to catch up.

"First thing we should do is tell Deidrus to get the Audron airborne, and make a strafing run on those things," Naleena said as she was riding along side Jess, "And maybe hit that compound with the main gun. I doubt anyone is still alive."

Morgan raised an eyebrow. "You're right about one thing, and that's whatever's behind us needs to be dealt with." He whistled for his mecha-steed, which came around. A few bullet holes now graced its flank, but other than that it seemed fine. He mounted up. "I have video feed of what went on there, plus what went on with the Sheriff.
"By the time we get back, though, who knows if they've spread out. I'm not going to question the Spectre if he wants to act on behalf of the council and go in guns blazing, but with all the civilians around...if you want to call them that, and the mess that's spreading out, we may want to have Deidrus talk to whoever organizes the defenses when there's a threat to this planet. They might be in it for the long haul and have more than one frigate's worth of firepower to fight with."
Personally, I wouldn't mind getting off this dust ball as soon as possible, Morgan thought to himself. He wasn't about to leave some planet hanging without warning, though. And between his videos and Jess', Morgan thought there wouldn't be much doubt that Duellos had a problem they needed to handle. He wondered if any progress had been made on the armor.
"Whatever the case may be, I agree we need to get back to that turian frigate." Morgan waited for a few other riders to mount, then headed off.

Jess saw the other following and kicked her steed into high gear. The traveller's managed good time and rode into town. Past the armed guard towers, under the metal sheet where someone had probably once written the town name where sand had blasted it from existance and stopped in the town square. Steeds were restless. Their engines revving as they climbed down from the pace that had been set.
Jess held a finger upto her ear. "Jess to Audron. You there"?
"Port Town Administration. How may I...... Wait.... Jess? Is that you Silver"!
"Yes it's me! Listen, we need an observation flght and a possible strafing run in the direction of the Aspire compound. We found our collector connection"!
"Deidrus has told me your all ordered back to the Audron as soon as I hear from you all. Is everyone else there"?
"Aelias.... I don't think you understand! The DA has been turning colonist's it can convert into things that are like Collectors! They attacked us! Fast. Strong and that's in this atmosphere! I don't want to think what'll happ......".
"Silver! Maybe you didn't hear me! Deidrus has ordered you all back to the Audron. He has a new assignment for us all and we've got to lift in the next fifteen minutes! Return to the ship at once"!
"Aelias...."!
"Jess.... We have our orders and they don't include strafes. Or anything but making sure this ship is ready for a collector attack in ship to ship combat. That's the Audron's focus".
"This town is.....".
At that moment a comm cry came out from the watchtower by the gate. "There's something coming.... I think alot of somethings.... moving fast towards us"!
"Aelias"! Jess growled.
"I intercepted. You have fourteen minutes. If you can do something in that time and be aboard great. Otherwise we're leaving without you. I'm sorry. It's orders".
"I don't take order's luv. I give them. Tell Deidrus we'll be there". Jess angrily switched off her comm and looked to the other's. "We can't stay. I'll see the judge. Get him to issue an evacuation order. They've got supply frieghters. They can pack people into them. Any that can't get packed into the Audron. I don't care what Deidrus says I'm not letting the Aspire get their hands on anymore people"!

Well fine. “Irina, you might want to get that jet bike of yours loaded on our ship if you don’t want to lose it for good. Vayne’s steed can tow it, or maybe you can find another way.” Morgan spurred his steed onward, heading to Gullet’s. There would be some cynical heads that needed to be turned and he had the impression the bar owner would do a lot of convincing.
Morgan practically leapt off his mount when he got to the saloon. He shoved the swinging bat doors opened fast enough to cause a number of the patrons to put their hands on their guns if they had them.
Gullet seemed perturbed, and strangely not surprised. “What kind of trouble you brought now, human?”
“I’m here to tell you the alert is no false alarm,” Morgan replied with a steady voice.
“What alert?”
An electronic klaxon suddenly blared through the town. It was loud enough to hear, even inside Gullet’s environmentally protected saloon.
Morgan left Gullet’s when he saw the krogan’s expression change for the serious. He got back on his steed, momentarily losing track of the others. As he pulled his mecha-steed around in a circle looking for them, he spied a batarian in a long black trenchcoat and wide brimmed hat staring at him. The batarian suddenly seemed to recognize Morgan.
“You’re with that pirate captain,” the batarian shouted angrily. “You son of a b**ch you killed my brother Tardek!” He pulled back his coat where his guns were.
Morgan yanked the Kovalyov out of the holster on his steed and opened fire with one hand. The recoil flung the rifle high, but Morgan’s first shot drilled the batarian square through the wide brimmed hat and his skull.
As the batarian dropped, dead before he hit the ground, Morgan pulled up his omni-tool. He sent a recorded verbal message to Miss Priss. “Took care of your problem. Get your companions, and meet us at our ship. You’re coming with us.”
Morgan spurred his steed to search for Jess.

Vayne mounted his steed as he looked to Irina, "What's the fastest way you could think to get people to run from this place?" He asked her, defering to her knowledge of the people, "I don't trust a judge to issue any sort of orders fast enough to beat 14 minutes, with or without evidence."
He wasn't going to let the aspire get more victims to turn into those things, but he didn't plan on sticking planet side for long either. They had to live through this, at least most of them did. And that meant getting loaded onto the ship, and getting off this rock quick. "And about our bike, just point me in the direction and I'll get the damn thing on, after we help clear this town safe."

Irina turned to Vayne, "Do you see those fuel tanks near the mecha steed place at the edge of town. Fire an incendiary round into them, but wait until after my bike is out of here."
Naleena got on her direct comm to VERA. "VERA! Pilot the shuttle to the rendezevous point in front of Gullet's Saloon. Center of town. Immediately!"
"Voice identification confirmed. Please press omni-tool. DNA identification confirmed. Retinal scan confirmed. I am on my way, Naleena." VERA replied.
Naleena turned to the others. "VERA will have my shuttle in front of Gullet's in three minutes and she can hold twelve."
"Try six plus my bike!" Irina said as she dismounted her steed, "This thing needs repair, but it can be transported."
"Fine, six, then," Naleena said, "I'll ride the steed to the Audron. Priss, you and your friends pile inside."
"Looks like you're off the hook for hauling the bike, Vayne," Irina smiled, "Now get that Krogan arse to the Audron."
"What about our belongings?" Priss asked.
"There's no time!" Naleena replied.
"I'm not leaving without my Firestorm!" Irina said and ran off to her apartment, "Don't you dare let that shuttle take off without me."
Naleena shook her head. Zenon waited by Naleena. "She's crazy, isn't she?"
"You're just figuring that out?" Naleena replied, and then she gave further instructions to VERA. "VERA, when everyone is aboard, take off for the Audron."
"Affirmative."
A few minutes passed and the wind clouds were gathering. A dust storm was approaching in addition to the Numans. Irina ran down the outside stairs from her apartment with her Firestorm and Crossbow, bolts, and other stuff in her arms. It was a sight to behold. VERA arrived, landed, and opened the shuttle door.
"Wait!" Irina shouted, "Gullet, help me push this thing into the back of the shuttle, please."
"Do I get a ride?" Gullet asked.
Irina counted heads, "If you can leave right away, yes."
"With that sh**storm coming. Yes, " Gullet grabbed the other side of the bike and pushed it into the back of the shuttle.
"I'll be right back," he ran back inside.
Irina threw her weapons in the locker inside VERA. The others, Priss, her friend, Zenon, and Irina strapped themselves into the shuttle. VERA started to close the door, and Gullet came running out of the saloon holding a crate of whiskey.
"Hold the door!" Gullet shouted.
VERA stopped and Gullet ducked and ran inside and sat in the seat nearest the door. "I couldn't leave this behind. It's the last of the best."
VERA dusted off and headed directly back toward the Audron. When she reached altitude, the horde of Numans could be seen approaching the town walls.

Frank was scrubbing away at the interior of his Kodiak, when he heard a shuttle preparing to take off. By the time he managed to squeeze through the hatch, it was already exiting the shuttle bay. Wherever it was headed, it was in a hurry. He climbed atop his Kodiak and sat, feet dangling from the side, waiting patiently for its return.

"Thanks." Vayne said as he saddled up, loading a round into his shotgun pistol as he looked to the others boaridng the shuttle. "Stay safe." was all he said before he rode at as high as speed as he could. He was riding towards the fire tanks, knowing what his prioriety would be as he headed towards them. It took him 2 minutes to get their full gallop, and he took aim with his gun and fired point blank at the tank.
Vayne didn't both sticking around as the fire began to catch, nor when the tank rocketed up in a massive plum of smoke loud enough that everyone would hear. Vayne continued to ride as quickly as possible, towards the others as he made it pass gullets saloon as the others began to load into the shuttle. It took 7 minutes, almost half the time they had, for him to ride towards the audron, but at his current pace, he'd make it in only 1 minute.
He rode hard as the audron came into view, riding hard as he galloped towards its bay doors and up into the loading bay itself, mechasteed reering up as he did so. "We have arrived at your destination." The mechasteed chimmed, its digital voice a bit glitched out as some fluids leaked from the bullet holes.
Vayne looked around to see if anyone else had made it here yet.

Frank watched as a large figure approached, on what appeared to be a horse. He noticed his bulky armor, it was nothing like he had ever seen before, and it showed clear signs of combat. Anyone barreling onto a turian ship like that would normally be met with a hail of gunfire, but the other engineers didn't seem to mind.
That must be the krogan I've been hearing about. The turians haven't shot him yet, so he must be friendly.
Frank remained on his shuttle. He decided that running up to an unknown krogan probably wasn't the best idea. He figured it best to wait and observe.
