Jess sat back against the back bulkhead of the hanger wall.
She wished Anika was here.
Anger mixed with loathing and contempt filled her as she thought of the Asari setting off the explosives.
It had been simple and straightforward. And had the Asari done as they were told.... they'd all be taking their seperate ways right now. Only instead they'd nearly killed her team.
Explosives....... What had possessed them? They'd destroyed their own property. Maybe damaged the armour they were set to protect. Possibly damaged the rail bridge. Put their own lives at risk. And for what? Nothing had changed. Aelias was still broadcasting and the armour was now their's apparently....
Military pride..... Sodding pride and having the last laugh like a bunch of sodding school children playing one up manship. If any of her team ahd died they wouldn't have cared. Sure, they'd plucked out the one's they had.... but what if other's had been blown to far for them to reach? Grav chutes weren't rocket packs.... it.... it.....
Somewhere along the lines her thought's turned to her baby brother. He'd been fine. Walking on his own. Smiling. Looking at the world through innocent eye's.
Then the runner came which wasn't completely unusual... except she had seen.... there in his face.... desperation. Fear mixed with hope as his face stood out deathly pale.....
Then two shot's and her baby brother would remain just that forever more.... her baby brother... fixed only in a memory of a Spectre who had ignored the risks to everyone around him just so he could go to where ever Spectre's went to be patted on the back and praised and backslapped.
The sidewalk where the shooting took place meanwhile had gained two chalk marks.
The Commando's were no different from the Spectre. They'd ignored everyone and everything but their duty. That Ethereal concept that made people go against their better judgement. What the Asari had done benefitted no one but earn them bragging rights. Taken by surprise? The pride of the Asari commando core resisted. That wuold be the story. Never mind they were getting what they came for and the Asari resistance had gained them exactly jack ****.
Jess could have died. The team could have died. The bloody Asari commando's could have died except she'd bet they'd be laughing and sharing funnies and it was wrong and was Aelias co-ordinating getting back their mount's and why was she crying about the brother and.....
Medusa...... She needed to get back to her ship. No more people trying to tell her the wrong thing to do not more bloody military mindset madness.... She needed off. And she'd earned it. she knew. Next stop, she was gone. Just gone. Let this group sort out the collector's themselves. It was crazy. Fighting each other when the planet was being over run by Aspirant's. And the armour was probably ruined.....
She looked up. Septimus stood there with a tablet held out in front of him. "Got some crate's for you from the Medusa". He drawled, "Gotta say.... I don't usually go out on missions.... That was a blast".
Jess was glad she still had her helmet on because if looks could kill..... He'd had fun? Jess snatched the tablet and signed for her crates. Wondering what they might be as she handed it back and rallied herself. She had to stay focused and in control. She might not be the captain of this ship... but she was still a captain and responsible for everyone as if she were.... or so she'd like to think. Pirate's life for me, she thought as she stood and made her way to the crates.
