Irina was really feeling out of it. Jess telling everyone she jumped down with the Asari, and didn’t know which side she was on. Crew and everyone on the ship glaring at her. She headed down to the brig.
“I’d like to see the Asari. Mira’s group if you don’t mind.” She told the guard.
The guard glared at her, opened the door to their cell. “You’ve got a visitor.” Then he turned to Irina. “I hope they tear you apart.”
“Well, f*ck me.” Irina said and turned to the Asari. “See? I tried to get the situation diffused without anyone getting killed, and look what happens. I might as well be in here. But Textbrain, why did you do it? Why did you blow the car? You could have gotten us all killed up there.”
“Orders, Irina. The way we rigged the explosives only the bottom of the car was going to blow out. Anyone on the top of the car was safe.” Mira said.
“Safe? I bloody fell!” Irina put her hand to her forehead.
“Our job was to make sure that the cargo didn’t fall into enemy hands.” Mira replied.
“We weren’t the enemy, Textbrain,” Irina said, “We had sanction from a Council Spectre.”
“But we didn’t have clearance from our Council Spectre to let you have the cargo.” Mira said. “The fact that you had a Council Spectre, and the fact that you didn’t use lethal means, and also that you were there were the only reasons we didn’t use a lethal response. If he had Council approval why would he need to rob the train? He wouldn’t.”
“Again, I lost my bloody balance and fell. So did another. We could have died.” Irina said.
“We knew that two, maybe three of you would fall, but we’ve had extensive training maneuvering our grav chutes to catch fallers during rescue missions,” She said.
“When I heard your voices I didn’t want you guys to get hurt.” Irina said.
“Textbrain doesn’t get that sh*t, do you Textbrain?” Jenus said, “So tell me, Irina, why couldn’t he wait for Council approval?”
“I’m just a grunt, but I’ve heard rumors about entire human colonies disappearing. They think it’s Collectors doing it. And now this mess on Duellos with those things running around proves it, and that they’re doing more than just collecting.” Irina said.
“Man, that’s really f*cked,” Jenus said.
Irina continued. “Androkan said he tried negotiating with Xanthe, but Xanthe wouldn’t budge. So we ended up in a pissing contest between two Spectres. It’s their fault. And politicians don’t know sh*t from clay. But who ends up holding the shitcan? As usual, us grunts. Mark my words, Textbrain, you’re going down for that armor at the bottom of the canyon.”
“The Spectre will have my back.” Mira said.
“You really believe that?” Iole asked, “Man, you’re naïve. The higher ups f*ck with us all the time. We just do our jobs, and then they toss us aside when we’re no longer convenient. You were with us, Irina. We didn’t get the word to release that armor until after we blew the bottom of the car. Now it’s just wasted.”
“Yeah, you gotta help us, Irina. For old times,” Jenus said.
“Then you verify that I fell. I’m not going down for sabotaging a Spectre mission,” Irina said.
“I saw you go over.” Mira said.
“So you have my back?” Irina asked.
“Yes, I have your back,” Mira said.
“Then I have yours,” Irina replied, “I’d better get back to being glared at. I’m missing the cold stares, and then there’s the kid I rescued, Zenon. She probably got shipped out with the other refugees. That worries me. She needed stability.”
