M,

I'll need to check out some more of the ship before I place my bet, but when I do I'll take you up on that. And if the trimming is too much, be careful of the armory level. It  has a minimalist style which can only be made by hours meticulously tracing lines by hand. And it is right by a sparring room. Jess' and an Asari are going to probably make that one impressionist before next docking.

E.

Eteon leaned against the doorframe that lead into the deck since Valk was practicing on her own and looked down the hall. After a moment she heard the thudding footfalls of a Krogan and looked back the way she came. It would be nice to see a familiar face even though she knew her aliens were already aboard.

Vayne continued to walk about the hallways, amazed he didn't need to duck down as much as he;d thought given the ships asari origins. It certainly was pretty, he had to give her that, though pretty would do nothing if she couldn't go fast, manuver, or fight a damn.

"Just have to hope this ships less like a commando, and more like a battlemaster..." he muttered to himself as he stopped, seeing a familiar face as he gave a small smile.

"Eteon..." he said simply as he gave a small bow of his head, "It's good to see you again."

Fast Forward: Naleena ran into Essul on an elevator and noticed he matched up with her dossier. She identified herself as a Spectre and asked if he'd like to join her mission, and laid out the terms and conditions. He said yes. She contacted Bailey and had him pardoned, and told Essul to report to the Janiri, which he did.

About thirty minutes later she ran into Avan Rezal, a human for whom she also had a dossier. She asked him if he wanted to join her mission and laid out the terms and conditions. He accepted. She gave him instructions to report to the Janiri.

About thirty minutes later she boarded the Audron, went down to the shuttle bay and flew the VERA over to the Janiri.

Eteon inclined her head to the battlemaster and clicked her mandibles. "It's nice to see you too Vayne. It was good to hear your repairs went well." She stepped away from the doorframe and slightly into the hall. "Might need to find a good space for them. I don't know if they were expecting to fit Krogan-sized equipment. I needed to use my own storage unit which should have room for your guns if you need it. I packed 'light'." She raised two of her talons in mock human quotation marks and bent them twice.

She was relieved to see the Krogan. It was nice to see something sturdy on any ship. Krogan were certainly that, especially when the going got as rough as a Vorcha's gum line.

Upon accepting the key from the quartermaster, Jess and Anika strode into their new room and looked about.

"It's a fixer upper". Jess said as she looked over the sides of the exposed bulkheads.

"Drapes"?

"Drapes". Jess agreed. "And let's get a proper bed in here. Plus the network gear we'll need. Let's get these panel's off and find comm cabling".

"How do you know we're near the comm cabling"?

"Because we're practically over the top of, and below the secondary comm array. We're lucky no one got it first".

"Not as spacious as the Audron".

"The Audron was built for peacekeeping luv. Border cutter and planetary response jobs. Did you see the canon's on this thing? Someone built this ship for war. Everything else was secondary. If it makes the ship deadly, it went in".

"They really built this ship from cores from Duellos"?

Jess looked up. "Near as I can tell Duellos was a world where a race died. They stored all their ship materials underground. Core's included. Quite a wind fall. Heck, if I'd known ahead of anyone else I'd have swiped it instead of the council".

"I expect Udina's having kitten's behind closed door's".

Jess laughed. "I know luv... and they call us pirate's! Okay, nuff is enough. Let's break open the credit bank and get this place working". She pulled a terminal out of the bag she had slung over her shoulder and pulled out her terminal before connecting to the Citadel extranet. "Huh, they have a radioshack". She ran a finger down the review list. "Commander Shepard's favourite place on the Citadel..... sold"!

"Take one every six to eight hours." Cmdr. Tolus handed Frank a bottle. "It will help with headaches and swelling."

"I have to swallow these?" He held one of the large pills between his thumb and index finger.

"No. Suppository."

Frank wrinkled his nose. "Doc..." He read the label "This says otherwise."

"Great! You can read." Tolus smiled. "Take orally, preferably with food.  Otherwise, nausea and vomiting likely side effects."

Frank nodded.  "So, am I good to go?"

"Yes."

"Thanks, doc." Frank slid from the table. "I'm sure I'll be seeing you again soon."

Frank left the medbay, and began wandering deck three.

Jenus, Iole, and Tallis were finally off duty after mopping the floor in the wardroom, and they went to the crew lounge. Irina had her door open and was putting her stuff away. She was in room 310, and heard the voices as the three Asari walked by, and she stuck her head out into the corridor.

“Hey, you guys. Come on in,” she said.

The Asari turned and went into her room.

“Close the door.” Irina said, and Iole closed it behind them. “Zenon, these are my friends, Jenus, Iole, and Tallis. Don’t mind Tallis. She just talks funny, but she’s fine. Guys this is Zenon. I met her at the Drowned Aspire. She’s been through a lot. Zenon, they’re some of the toughest fighters in the galaxy.”

“And we’re stuck with guard duty.” Jenus said.

“Be thankful we’ve got guard duty and there’s not a war on.” Iole said, “Anyway, nice to meet you Zenon.”

“Nice to meet you, too.” Zenon said, and she went back to unpacking Irina’s stuff.

“Jenus, it’s all over the ship,” Irina said, “Now I don’t like the b*tch either, but what you did required the brains of a stunted swamp chigger. What the f*ck were you thinking?”

Jenus looked up at Irina. “If anyone else said that to me I’d beat the crap out of them. But you’re right. It was pretty dumb. But I was still mad at her for spearing Tallis.”

“Doc doc heal. All good now.” Tallis said.

“And the Commander and Spectre are going to have a sit down with Textbrain trying to figure out how to settle this.” Iole said.

“Sh*t. Sounds like things are going to get worse before they get better. Fortunately, that pirate b*tch and her blonde haired giant are on the port side.” Irina said, “Uh, Zenon, you know not to say anything about what we talk about in here, right? It’s like what you tell me, I don’t tell others about.”

Zenon gave her the thumbs up.

“Hey, we’d better get going before they start looking for us,” Jenus said, “No offense, Irina, but with us being in trouble like this, I don’t want to make it worse.”

“Good seeing you. We’ll catch up later after the dust settles.” Iole said.

Tallis nodded and smiled. She went over and said goodbye to Zenon. The commandos left the room and headed to the common room and waited for the inevitable: being called to the conference room.

"Tch. An armory that can't fit oversized armor. Well I never..." The old korgan said, feigning insult as he winked and grinned to the turian to let her know he wasn't seriously, mostly anyway. "I can understand a bit. Though if that's the cause a council ship would have been better then an asari exclusive one." he commented as he heard her concern.

"Long as they don't try to make me carry my own explosives in my bunk I'll be good. Cramped spaces and explosives don't make for a good mix...speaking of weapons though, it's actually why I came down here. I got a weapon with my armor I want to make sure is alright." he admitted to her, giving a cheeky grin as he chuckled a little, "Got into a bit of a diplomatic situation with c-sec when I tried to keep jess from getting us all thrown in jail. Want to make sure the bastards didn't do anything to it..."

He was silent a bit, still riding his mirth as he calmed down a bit and looked to eteon, "Are you going to be alright though? Coming to a new ship and a new captian. Can't be easy." he said, getting a bit more serious as he spoke.

==========================================================================================================

Essul sat in his quarters with a knife balanced flat on his palm, simply sitting on the bunk cot as he contemplated his situation. He was on a spectre ship, as part of some menagerie of individuals, following a council ordered mission. Something bothered him however, and he thought it over as he sat in his less formal attire, a simple military style t-shirt, pants, and boots((the shepard one, sort of like when they worked for cerberus)). His scars showed on his arms though he didn't care, nobody was around to see them anyway.

"Why was I brought here..." he asked aloud, finally vocalizing his thoughts. The council had a file on him, he'd not been informed of such by his superiors, which made him wonder if they'd released his information to the council as some part of peace deal after the fall out of his botched mission.

"Speaking of which..." he said as he twirled his knife, the blade flashing once in a while as he expertly spun it about out of habit, "What's in it?" he wondered, unsure of what information was present within the file. Perhaps it said he'd gone rouge? Perhaps it said the truth? Either way, his swift recruitment and previous mental stress had made him miss an oppurtunity to answer these questions, for which he had no one to blame but him-

"Ahhh..." Essul said as he dropped his knife, feeling something smack against his finger as he looked to see a fresh cut along his ring finger, red blood oozing from the wound ((found out only a little while ago they have red blood. :P )). He didn't feel it, the medication helping to dull a lot of his sense of touch, but he still acted quickly to tear a bit of bedsheet, wrapping it around his hand as he stood up.

He'd need to head to the infirmary for some medigel, even if a minor wound, he couldn't allow himself to risk infection. And on the way, he'd make sure to admonish his careless for this, and his numerous mistakes that led him here.

Anika came through the door dragging two large crates behind her which she dropped on the floor. "Jess! Radio shack delivered"!

"Shepard's such an sellout"! Came Jess's voice back from where she sat struggling with a flatpacked bed. "Every place I've ordered from is Shepard's favourite place on the Citadel! There is.... literally.... NOWHERE he hasn't been"!

Anika sighed. "Universal Packaging Services delivered".

"So"?

To answer, Anika pulled out the delivery receipt. Jess took it and read along the top......

"Shepard's favourite delivery service on the Citadel....".

Tossing the sheet to the side Jess bent to her task. "Get the mattress unpacked will you"?

Looking over at the far wall Anika saw what Jess referred to and stepped over to read the manufacturing description. "Gel fast acceleration bedding? Never heard of it".

"It's a throwback to the days when people in ships felt the G force of the acceleration. Gel couches allowed folk to absorb more Gee's by giving them a pliant mass to settle back into. Much as I appreciate those who designed the ship, she's still new. New ships have bugs by design. Hundreds of thousands of interacting ships systems. Who knows how many designer's. Thousand's of hands installing things the way they know how..... Part of the reason why the K&Q buy used. No used ship that's run in space for a year goes bad". She looked up. "I expect this one's going to be okay with all the resource they've thrown into it.... but better safe than sorry. I don't want to be sleeping, have a system failure and find my gut's have been liquified from going from zero to one hundred Gee's".

Anika sighed. "Only an engineer would think of that".

"S'reason why this mission need's engineer's. We think in, around and outside the box. This is a warship luv. If system's fail, this will be the ship it happens to because it's going to be stressed all to hell fighting off the Collector's". She gestured around the room. "Most of the wiring around here.... it's good. Modular. Easy to replace when it get's damaged. But it's not optimised for performance the way the Medusa is".

"The Medusa's a sink hole of maintenance"! Anika argued.

"And she's closer to her full potential because of it". Jess countered.

"Hmmph...Engineers". Anika griped.

"Solider". Jess bit back with a twist to her lip.

"Need me to hold that for you".

"Please".

Kneeling down together they got back to building.

"Are you going to tell me where the Medusa is? I know you got the details from Arthur".

"I need to talk to Naleena first. I expect I'll be summoned over that incident in the corridor".

"You expect"?

"I'd call me".

Morgan had been separated from the tour when he got to his room.

“Three-and-a-half by four meters,” Septerax said. “The amenities…”

“I’ll find them,” Morgan cut him off.  He didn’t mean to be rude, but the trip through the Janiri had really been enough.

“Contact me if you need anything,” Septerax offered and then left to show another of the new members their room.

The quarters were ‘military’ for an asari ship, Morgan supposed.  An ergonomic bunk was provided.  Morgan checked the mattress to find that it gave to the body’s shape, though maintained a degree of firmness.  He felt weirdly hugged by the bed, and jumped out of it quickly.  Wondering if he would get used to it, he moved over to a teardrop shaped table with a sophisticated computer interface.  On it was a round mug, and some sort of smooth, white art piece.  Morgan picked it up, thinking it was shaped like a small stalagmite with the top chopped off and a hole put through it.  He sighed and pushed it to the end of the teardrop while noting that the table was distinctly lacking in far corners.

Then Morgan heard a chirp.

The first thought Morgan had was that the asari had some sort of audio playing, meant for him to have familiar sounds from Earth in the background.  The kind of thing meant to relieve stress.  But when Morgan turned to find the source of the sound, instead of spotting a speaker, or stereo system, up in one of the corners of the room, behind him so he hadn’t seen it coming through the door, was a built in cage with a bird occupying it.

A living bird.

The bird was black feathered, with a blue sheen, and an orange colored breast.  Its head seemed of an unfamiliar angular, and peculiar shape, causing Morgan to recognize it was likely the creature wasn’t from Earth at all.  He certainly didn’t recognize the species.  It melodiously chirped again.

“Okay!”  Morgan shouted out, his discomfort with the surroundings hitting its peak.  He went over to the desk computer as the bird watched him with tilted head, and was having a hard time as he searched for the com activation on the touch screen.  Finally, he found it, and was about to contact Septerax when the bird made a different sound.

The bird cooed, and it was so musical, that Morgan froze in place.

Morgan turned to the creature, which still looked at him.  It cooed again, beautifully, like a song he had lived all his life to hear.  Slowly, Morgan approached the bird, studying it as it studied him.  When he got close, he saw the creature staring at him with silvery eyes.

“So, little thing,” Morgan said to the bird, “Maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to judge.”

(Note:  The following was a collaboration between RedBelle, Shotgun Julia, and me)

Naleena boarded the ship and walked back to the CIC. She acknowledged Commander Selani who stopped her and wanted to speak with her.

"Yes, Commander, what is it?" Naleena asked.

Selani motioned for Naleena to move away from the rest of the bridge crew. "There was an altercation between one of my commandos and your team. It was Jenus and Capt. Jess Stone. Jenus slammed Stone against the bulkhead," Selani said.

"I will deal with this." Naleena replied.

"Spectre, with all due respect, the commandos are part of my crew and are my responsibility," Selani countered, "I believe it would be better if we had a meeting with Captain Stone, the commando’s leader, you, and I, in the conference room. There are differences that need to be aired and you and I need to be there as mediators. The commandos are highly qualified and I would like to keep them on this ship."

"Where are they now?" Naleena asked.

"I gave them KP for the time being," Selani replied.

"I see," Naleena said, "then after they finish cleanup have them report to the conference room. I want to get this over with. Let's get this ship underway and set a course for Illium."

"Aye aye, Ma'am."

It would take an hour to reach the mass relay and leave the Serpent Nebula.

~ ~ ~ ~

The conference and communication room of the Janiri was private host to three asari and a human.

With a flick of her wrist, Naleena pulled a cigarette out from a case, lit it, and leaned back in her chair. She took a long drag, and simply said. "Who wants to go first?"

"I do," Mira answered immediately, and then spoke directly to Jess. "Captain Stone, I want to apologize on behalf of myself and my team for what you went through earlier. It was absolutely uncalled for and an embarrassment. Not to mention the potential for someone getting hurt."

Mira paused. She felt heat rising in her cheeks. She would have been able to stand for everything Jenus had done, her team had done, right up to the point that control was lost. Jenus had turned what was a justified, and difficult but excusable situation into a wreckage. The woman looking back at Mira was at least five to six times younger in years than Mira, and yet Mira felt like she had to worry about the immaturity of those she worked with. It killed her, to have to speak for her team that she loved so much in the way she was. And yet it was needed.

A heavy sigh escaped Mira, in contrast to the look of determination she had to get through anything that had to be said. Her light blue skin gave away the faintest hint of a deeper color and she stared Stone directly with clear eyes. Mira rested her arms and palms on the table. "Captain, if there's some way you can find to forgive us for what we've done, it would be deeply appreciated. If it is at all possible, I'd like to find a way to move past what happened."

Stone looked over at the Asari sitting across from her. Looking properly contrite for the action's of one of hers.... perhaps a touch too....

"Look luv. Let's settle this in one fell swoop shall we? Back then we weren't on the same side. Now we are. In my line of work deals go bad and it usually happen's because someone got one over on you. We're working to stop a group of beings called Collector's from taking human lives.... kidnapping or killing, we just don't don't know at this point. And let's be frank. The major issue at this point is a matter of principal that Naleena here is soon about to learn. Being a captain".

Jess turned her gaze to Naleena. "We succeed. We get the job done, everytime. It's nice to be sitting on a ship custom built for the job of fighting Collector's and whatnot. But at the time? This ship wasn't part of the plan. The Audron was. We can't rely on luck or some force from above to pull us out of the fire because we're all there is in this enterprise. The Turian's won't touch the problem, it's not near their border's. The Asari are being hailed as hitting a nail with a tactical nuke. They won't throw anymore resources at this without taking a political hit. And Asari politic's doesn't do weakness. The Salarians? Pft, their fleet's not up to fighting this fight. And human's are still recovering from the Citadel assault and are stretched to thin".

"The point.... is this.... One Ship. One crew. One captain to make it work. It doesn't matter what you do to stop the threat as long as everything you do goes towards stopping the threat and critically..... you succeed. That means not failing. That's what happened in the train job. You may say what the hey we can let it slide no harm done.... No captain can afford to think that way. Because we just don't know what failure will mean in the long run".

Jess looked back at Mira. "I don't like that your team cost us that principle. We screw up, people die. Simple as that. The council actually doing something that could be conceived as useful is a miracle in and of itself. But we can't rely on luck anymore".

Pausing Jess leaned back in her chair twisted to rest an arm on the chair. "As for tall blue and brooding.... I get it. She's got steam to vent. It happens. you need to find a way to get her to vent it somehow because Anika was ready to put her through that bulkhead. You saw her. No offense but as much as she's not that keen on her upbringing it's still an important part of her and she never got cut any slack. She's mellowed, but so you know... I've never seen that that side of her come out so strong. She's as upset as I am on the train fiasco, because? Principle. And to rub salt into the wound, she went away and left me in that situation when she's supposed to be my bodyguard. And then discovered that her helmet was the only thing that stopped some of the shrapnel your explosion caused from sending a jagged piece of sheet through my eye sockets. Much as I appreciate everyone downplaying this.... the group who are working together now have some history in that your people tried to kill our people. Intention's don't matter. you don't let off explosive's and then laugh it away as a 'Gee, I hope no one got hurt in that explosion right under their feet'.

Jess looked around. "We have a potential situation ready to go off under us unless we ensure that any bad blood get's dealt with. If this were my ship I'd go the usual way. Get it out into the open". She looked at Mira. "What do you think luv? How do your people deal with this sorta thing"?

Mira tilted her chin slightly to the left, moved back into her chair slightly. "I can't speak for my people in general, but how I deal with this sort of thing is, well, talking about it like we are."

"It was my call about the explosion. If I didn't approve of it, no one would have executed it. It probably doesn't make a difference to say the idea was not intentionally to hurt anyone, but keep in mind what was done to the ship, and what was done to us directly before the explosion..." Mira stopped, closed her eyes, and opened them after her pause. "This is not how I want this to go. I want to walk away from here with you knowing that I and the other commandos know what happened on the bridge was wrong. And inexcusable."

Now, Mira was having a hard time. This was about the train. This was about someone getting hurt with no mention of the hurt they caused. And she was being lectured, which she could tolerate somewhat. But she wasn't going to have the whole conversation unravel in the room. It wasn't going to get anyone anywhere. Something Stone had said....

"Get it out in the open. What exactly do you mean by that?"

Jess purposely ignored the question and addressed Mira. "What was done to your ride and what was done to your comrade's was a quick and non-lethal take down to keep the problem from escalating. It's part and parcel of the way I do business. Make sure the big guns stay in their holsters so no one gets hurt. Last resort when all hell breaks lose solution..... I can guess your not enjoying the lecture luv.... But I've been traversing the stars and gotten the fact's of life down packed. What we did was business. You made it combat. Now I can do business and combat..... right now all I've seen you do is combat.... that leaves you and your team unable to figure when there's more profit to talk than fight. I get it. Anika was the same. Went for the guns every time because that's the response drilled into her. Took awhile to get that boot camp mentality out of her head and start seeing the possibilities".

"Right now the possibilities are this. We brush this under the carpet and pretend it never happened. Which, and this is just experience talking.... is a bad idea. Whatever caused that little eruption back there.... Okay, let me guess. She can be a hot head. She like the physical solution. In which case this talk you and I are having.... won't do her any good and she's the one with the problem. She wants a piece of me.... She’s welcome to try it. But under the eye of a referee in a controlled environment. She wants to beat me? Fine. I don't care one wick. But if this is what we need for her to clear up the issue then that's what we'll do".

Jess grinned. "Frankly luv. I'm happy to see something like this does happen on military ships. Makes me feel right at home. Like there's a little piece of the Medusa on the Jeniri".

Commander Selani could see the meeting was getting beyond the scope of what she originally intended. She was by the book military, and Jess was lecturing the crew. In her eyes, this meant she was lecturing her.

“Spectre, may I speak?” Commander Selani asked.

Naleena nodded.

The commander leaned forward in her chair with her hands on the table, fingers interlaced. “With all due respect Captain Stone, Spectre T’sarius not the commanding officer of this vessel. The Council delegated that authority to me. In essence, as captain of this vessel, I have authority over the crew, and have the latitude to run the unit I see fit, within the bounds of military law. In this respect, I have significant responsibilities pertaining to the use of force, finances, equipment, Council treaties, duties to higher authority, mission effectiveness, duty of care to personnel, and powers relating to discipline and punishment of personnel within certain limits of military law.

“Spectre T’sarius is in charge of the missions and their planning. She and I called this meeting to settle the dispute that occurred on the foredeck of the ship. By lecturing my crew, you are lecturing me. From what I saw, Commando Jenus owes you an apology, and I will handle the rest of her punishment. Her action was way out of line. And her peers are already letting her know. However, if the two of you want to have a referred sparring match in the gym, that can be arranged, but it will not change the punishment.

“What happened on Duellos happened while under direction of another commander and is not my responsibility. I’ve read the reports from the Council and the commanders in charge of both operations have been punished for exceeding their authority. It is in the past. We don’t even know what our current mission is at the moment. Once we do we will deal with that.

“Spectre T’sarius may overrule my authority; I trust she won’t given my experience.”

Naleena felt the need to speak. She stood. “I think everyone needs to settle down. Jess is right that there is an immediate need to stop the Collectors that the team thwarted, but the commandos and the train robbery were under orders from other Spectres. Both Spectres were punished,” Naleena smiled at Jess, “And Jess, the armor for the retrofit of the Audron was unloaded from the Janiri after it docked. That mission was not aborted. The Council listened. The net loss of time was two days. Commander Selani is the captain of this ship. This is her crew, and I trust her judgment.

“Something else you should know, Jess. This ship wasn’t built to fight the Collectors. I’ll call a briefing while we’re stopped at Illium. Do you remember the Battle of the Citadel? This ship is part of a secret fleet being built to fight ships like the giant ship that tore through the Citadel Fleet. The Council officially denied the Reaper threat, but unofficially acknowledged it. Shadow budgets were set up within system governments to fund this project under innocuous names including environmental protection, education, energy, and budget oversight. This fleet is also exempt from the Treaty of Farixen because of a loophole. The Collectors, we suspect, are merely pawns of the real threat: the Reapers. They are coming. Our mission is to find a way to stop them.”

Jess settled back. "Luv... You ask me to jump, I'll ask how high. you ask me to wash out the washrooms, I'll wash out the washrooms. You ask me to keep the engine running and I'll make it purr. You’re right. I'm not the captain of this ship. There can only be one. That's you". She pointed to Commander Selani. "Naleena.... you mission commander, right? That's a big promotion from your.... last occupation". Jess phased the term. "Much as I'd love to sit back and enjoy the ride, there's something I think your overlooking.

"I'm not by the by the book. Anika's not by the book. The crew you just took on likewise like the rest of us, tore up a rulebook long ago and wrote our own. You stopped commanding a group of dedicated trained, 'predictable' Asari the moment you took us aboard commander'". Jess stressed the commander part. "Meanwhile I've been captaining the worst low lifes and riff raff's and turning them into people you could actually invite to dinner. I'm mentioning this because commander.... you are going to have conflicts. There will be disputes. Challanges. If things go really bad, maybe the odd crew who want to get off this ship and head back to where ever they hailed from. My point is that nothing's changed. The Audron was staffed by professional's and a tough as old boots XO. And thing's still happened that went against the mold of what was deemed acceptable Turian military behaviour.... but they rolled with it and let the pressure out the cooker as it were..... you do what you like with Jenus. She's your crew. But whatever punishment you derive, won't get to the core of what's bothering her. That's the root to weed out first"

Jess sniffed. "And frankly luv I'd hope you see that I'm doing you a favour. I was long over what happened on the train. Jenus it seems isn't. But Mira here needs to know our side if she's going to bring her girl down some". Jess turned to her. "But after she vents. Punish her before it'll just add to her anger. Do it after and if I can get her to let what's eating her out, maybe she'll be okay". Jess smiled. "Difficult crew member? A ring? Some will see it a fight. But speaking as a captain.... it's the one place where some hard head's will open up to some counselling".

With that Jess turned. "And.... Reapers? Really? That's..... a thing.... Probably better to stick to the Collector's luv. I mean... Reapers? Let's say your right. They’re a fairy tale. People think their a fairy tale and go into a briefing with Reapers as your big target two things will happen..... you'll get everyone laughing and then ask you who your really after.... Or they'll believe you and wonder.... how do Collector's and Reapers go together? Cause luv... so far there's no link between the enemy our team has met, and the fairy tale the councils shot down in flames as having any foot hold in reality".

Selani said, “This ship may be deceptive in that it has a more civilian comfort with the military design. To be honest, it’s more comfort than I’m used to. I’m not a green commander, Captain. I commanded the frigate Cyone in the Battle of the Citadel. I’ve fought Geth. I saw the giant warship that Naleena is talking about. It was called Sovereign. It was nearly unstoppable.”

Naleena listened. “Okay, Jess, we tell them it’s Collectors, and we still focus on the real mission. I haven’t had the time to pour through all the intel, but I have copies of the suit recordings from Commander Shepard’s mission to Virmire and Ilos: copies that were stowed away because they would panic the public. I’ll be spending a lot of time watching them over the next few hours in my quarters. You are welcome to join me if you think you can help me better spin this mission to the rest of the team.”

Selani then addressed Stone. “Look around the ship. This is a multi-species effort. This is not a group of ‘predictable Asari.’ Now apparently you haven’t finished with your side of the issue, and this wound goes back to that planet. Sergeant T’riel, this is your team. How do you want to handle this?”

"I want the Captain to feel that she has gotten her message across," Mira relaxed her countenance. “Serving under this command, and aboard this vessel, and with the crew involved is an honor. Perhaps you won’t believe me Captain, but that extends to you. Now, nobody in this room knows Jenus better than I do. You're close, Captain Stone, if I may, but not quite on the mark about her."

Mira lifted her head, "I think I've got your side, Captain. We come from different places. But I'm here to make amends. The issue I see is, for the kind of satisfaction you may be looking for, it won't come from Jenus."

With a slide of her eyes to Commander Selani and Naleena, Mira went on, "I am the subordinate here and defer to the ultimate decisions of my superiors. But I would like you to know that Jenus, while she might have said and acted out of line, was done venting the moment she was put in her place, and not just by the bodyguard. However, Jenus is not like anyone sitting here, either. What she is going to be confronted by next is that she feels that her leaders didn't come to her defense, even if she was wrong. That is my fault, to a degree. Captain, when your bodyguard stepped in, I didn't want to cause further aggravation. And clearly the bodyguard is familiar with asari military customs.

"But I know Jenus," Mira emphasized. "She'll live with whatever happens. Yet if you want her to trust again, to put this all behind her,...for it to stop 'eating' at her, then I think it is resolved best in a way that meets somewhere between what the Captain and our own little team are used to. Call it a compromise, if you will, that takes care of everything.

"The satisfaction, Captain that you'll be looking to give and receive, won't come from Jenus. It will come from me. And when it’s done, I believe you'll find Jenus to be a different person. What do you say, Captain Stone?"

Jess was wincing still from Selani’s comments. "Luv....". She said to the commander. "Much as I defer to any captain aboard her ship. You don't get to tell me what I feel. And I hope to blazes you listen to your orders better than you spin conversations". She folded her arms and stared at her. "Our group..... the ones you took aboard.... are not a group of predictable Asari. That is what I said..... Tell them what to do and how to do it, they'll do it. Tell them what to do with no guidance.... And they'll come up with a crazy plan that defies conventional wisdom and will take the enemy by surprise. I'm assuming those past ships where you spent the majority of time were staffed by Asari since it's the way militaries run. Your not dealing with clean cut boot camped career military officer's anymore. You are dealing with rugged individualists who won't appreciate the heavy hand your taking with me". She pointed a finger. "Don't argue. I'm not trying to make your life difficult. Your the captain and that mean's you don't get the bedside manner. You run the ship. That mean's you have to be told how it is..... by any and everyone aboard. My job, the collector teams job is to do what your crews does insofar that we can cover your ass, so you in turn can make sure ours is protected. Your in charge. Say what you like. Believe what you like. Just don't expect any of the original collector hunting team to pretend their a part of your reality".

Jess turned to Naleena. "I think it's a good idea to keep the Reaper's out luv... Maybe suggest the connection, but don't go overboard with it. I don't know if Reapers are real, but now you've mentioned .... if something turns up on the missions that links to what you have in your records.... the team will have an easier time buying the Reapers.... but you don't have to listen to me luv. If you need advice or need a sounding board to bounce idea's off my door's open. Ultimately your the one the buck stops with. I'll do what I can to help you. But the best help I can offer is to not offer it until you ask". She jerked her chin over to the commander. "Turn's out having two folks with different command experience just invites bad communication. But for my money, it's always good to listen to your subordinates. Mira here knows Jenus better than any of us and if she says she knows best how to deal with her.... I'm inclined to believe her. Till she proves me right or wrong".

With that said and done, Jess turned to Mira. "Luv, on this I'll defer to you. You know her best so I'll play it how you want. One thing though. I'm going to have Anika there. your right. She knows your people. She's a professional soldier. And much as it'll pain her, she needs to see this resolved or she'll be on edge every time Jenus comes around. Personally I hope she'll get to know you folks. you've got military running through both of you. Anika's just learned some of the more dirty tricks in the book". She leaned forward. "And know this. I went after one of yours because at the time I saw yours taking mine. But as of the moment we became crewmates, there is no us and yours. Just ours. And if I see anyone taking any of ours I'll go after them to get ours back. We're crew. We're comrades". She stuck out her hand. "I hope we can bury the past here and whatever you have in store... and be friends".

Mira reached across the table and took Jess hand, though she looked at her askew. “Are you saying you don’t prefer to meet me in the training room ‘to open some hard heads’? You know, so you feel at home?”

Jess chuckled. "You want to join in luv? Sorry. Two's company. Three's a crowd. You'll probably be the go to person to referee though". She paused. "Don't go thinking my kind of star blazer is about beating on each other luv. I didn't put up with my crew attacking each other, or anyone else. But.... We're all living in a box hurtling through the most hostile environment known to life, relying on a hodgepodge of technical wizardary to stay alive out here. That's a subtle pressure every spacer lives under, so adding that to all other life's ills.... it's no surprise to me that spacer's are more inclined to go off every now and then. There's no one but us here and if you can't get on with the man or woman next to you.... things can get bad fast. Unless you get to the root and address the cause".

Naleena spoke up. "Regarding the command structure, this doesn't seem to be off to a very good start. I hope we can stop this p*ssing contest. No one is telling you how to feel, Jess. I don't understand what all this lecturing is about. First, our specialist team is separate from the crew of the ship. Second, the crew of the ship is supposed to support the specialist team. The Commander is highly qualified for the latter, and thus will take part in our mission briefings. Jess, you do not have to be concerned about the team being ordered about by the Commander unless there is an order to abandon ship. And in addition to being part of the team Eteon, who is not present at this meeting, is going to act as a liaison between the ship's crew and the team. Yes, I managed to recruit her." Why did I take this job?

The Cabal hesitated before replying. She began speaking somewhat slowly. "It's... Not my type of ship. I'm used to hard edges and dull colors, seeing another Turian at every corner." A pause before she lifted a talon to scratch under her protrusion of her mandible. "I'm 23 years old and have spent most all my time in Turian space as liaison between my crew and another group. It's weird to suddenly find myself on a completely different ship and suddenly doing the opposite thing." She moved her talon to the back of her neck to massage it for a moment before dropping her hand back to her side.

"I'll probably get used to it. Don't know if I will see as many ground operations since my biotics aren't a direct boon with the number of biotics aboard." She gave a mock chuckle while shaking her head. "Might even make it so I last 'til the end of the mission. Who knows?"

Quietly, she grit her teeth. Performance anxiety. She had run-ins with it in the past and only when working with talented biotics. it was something she never had to deal with since she was often stationed with only a couple, or was the only one on a Turian ship. Being surrounded by them? I'll figure something out. She thought to herself, blinking once when she realized she had been gazing off into nothing.

She shook her head again, this time to shake off whatever was clinging to the inside of her head. "Bah, I just need something to do. Naleena will have to brief us at some point and then I can focus on that. In the meantime I'll find odds and ends to fiddle with."

Naleena stood. "Everyone. Dismissed. I'll be in my quarters."

She walked out to the elevator that was directly opposite the conference room and took it up to her quarters. She exited the elevator and went to the room on the right. There was a retinal scanner that she used to unlock the door. Room 1. Unlike the other quarters directly to her right, there was a large fish tank with Thessian Sunfish, Illium Skalds, small jellyfish from Kahje, and hermit crabs from Earth. The tank had an automatic feeder. To the left near the entrance was her office area, and behind that was her bathroom, and shower. There was a couch, chair and table, looking at it, and control for a drop down screen for movies and viewing other videos. Next to that was a cabinet stocked with her private reserves. And past that was the closet and her bed - an ergonomic queen size temperature controlled bed.

She headed to the cabinet and poured herself three fingers of Serrice Ice Brandy, flipped open her cigarette case, lit a cigarette, and sat on the couch. Then she activated the screen. She figured it was time to look over what this mission was about.

"Computer, display suit still shot, Ashley Williams, Eden Prime, Sovereign."

sovereign_zps4e3a361c.png

"Computer, display suit recording of Ashley Williams - Virmire - Sovereign."

Naleena took a stiff drink. "Computer display suit recording Liara T'soni - Ilos - Vigil." She extinguished her cigarette.

Naleena took a deep breath. The Council had given her their first mission, but Jess was insisting that the Collectors were the more important threat. That the Reapers were a myth. She remembered they had a Collector specimen on the Audron, and she needed a solid connection. What were the Collectors?

"Retract screen," Naleena said. She stood and walked to her desk, and pressed the intercom. "This is Spectre T'sarius. Patch me through to the Audron."

"Aye aye, Ma'am."

Aelias answered. "Audron."

"Aelias, this is Spectre T'sarius, Naleena. Have they started the retrofit?"

Aelias sighed. "They're getting things ready. They're stripping the paint off the ship at the moment, but I'm going to guess that this isn't a social call."

"I need to speak to the doctor. Is Elara in?"

"Yes, I'll transfer you to Med-lab."

A couple of seconds passed and Elara picked up. "Yes, Naleena, this is Elara, I'm busy at the moment. What do you want?"

"I can't imagine that you're too busy with the down time."

"I can finally catch up on the paperwork. So what's so important?"

"I'm calling about that Collector specimen we captured on Omega. Did you ever do a DNA  and systemic analysis of it?"

"Of course I did silly. I take it that you want a copy?" Elara replied.

"I would very much appreciate it. It could be critical to my mission." Naleena said.

Elara paused. "Well, I'll send it to you when I get the time."

"Could you send it now, please, with an Ice Brandy on top?" Naleena asked.

"You beg so nicely. Okay, for you this once."

"Thanks, Doctor. T'sarius out."

Naleena spent the next minutes looking at the mission files at her desk. Jess was right. This was going to be a hard sell unless the team saw the entire file, and seeing it all at once would just be too much. Best to just do the missions. Maybe if there's a Collector mission that comes up, handle that, but she had to focus on her Council mission.

Her terminal lit. She had e-mail. It was from Elara and it contained a very large attachment.

To: Naleena

From: Elara

RE: Collector Sample

Here is the DNA and full scan report of the Collector specimen we got from Omega. I hope you find this satisfactory. You owe me a drink.

Attch: DNA report; Scans

This is me.  I think.

Frank stood before the door of his assigned quarters. Or maybe it was someone else's, he wasn't sure.

"The passkey was... It was... hm." He scratched his head.

I'll just hack it.

Frank raised his arm to access his omni-tool.

Oh, right.

It had been sent to the Janiri, but he hadn't picked it up yet.  He stepped on the elevator, and headed for the armory.

"I agree. Helps to having something else to focus on at times..." Vayne said with a nod, knowing what it felt like to be a fish out of water, "Could always have been worse though, you could be stuck on a volus vessel. And trust me, it;s not a fun experience." Vayne said, remembering one of the more odder times of his long life.

"Best advice I can give you is just go with it if you feel out of place. I've tried centuries to understand aliens, and I found what it comes down to is just going with whatever weird thing it is they do." Vayne said with a shrug of his shoulders, "Not sure if that helps, but it might."

================================================================================

The batarian made his way silently to the medical bay as he stepped out of the elevator, walking until he spotted the familiar built room. Even on an alien vessel, medical bays were built to be exceptionally spacious and noticeable.

He stepped through the doors as he looked around, curious what or who was going to help treat his cut.

"A Volus ship." The Turian repeated with a question in her tone. A ship built near-exclusively for the short-of-stature race would be hell to maneuver as a Krogan. "Somehow I think that being on a Volus ship would leave even the most shrewd of Salarian bankers creditless by the end of the voyage."

Eteon moved from her spot and rolled her shoulders trying to loosen up a bit. "And thanks for the advice. I will probably try to find some of the Asari to chat with then, look for common ground or at least see what about them is interesting. Those commandos are on board so might try and prod something from them." She sighed and looked down the hallway both ways. "Might as well start now. No point in going into shock over color swatches." She inclined her head to Vayne before pointing down the hall the way he was going. "Second hallway on the left is the Armory. Good luck fitting everything in."

“Commander,” the XO Tollan Linra informed, “We are all set to go for Relay travel to Illium.”

Commander Alana Selani notified Naleena in her quarters from the com upon her station chair.  Although some commanders preferred to stand, Selani actually liked to remain aware and comfortable sitting when she issued standard, but important, orders.  Selani flipped the com interface over to address the crew of the Janiri net.  The system would deliver her voice throughout the ship, and make record on each person’s personal log.

“This is Commander Alana Selani.  Welcome aboard the Janiri
.  We are away from the Citadel and will be hitting the first Relay in fifteen minutes, our ultimate destination Illium.  Total travel duration including two Relays and in system travel will take approximately six and a half hours.  Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the vessel, review all safety procedures, and take note of a special invitation you will receive in your mail.”

After cutting the general com, Selani directly contacted engineering.  “Han, are you’ve got a handle on that readout spike?”

“Affirmative, Commander,” the quarian answered.  “We’ve double checked.  It was a display error and has been corrected.  We are one-hundred percent down here.”

Selani shook her head, and silently prayed, New ships with their kinks.  Goddess, get us to Illium without pause.

When the commander was done, she called up to the pilot, “Quintius, commence Relay approach.”

Mira entered the common room after her meeting.  All three of her companions stood and waited to hear what had happened.

“Well?”  Iole was first to ask.

“It’s as smooth as a meeting can make it.  There isn’t going to be anything more about what happened.  I think we came to some common ground.”

“Did you get an apology out of her at least, Textbrain?”  Jenus asked, folding her arms across her chest.

Mira scowled at Jenus, “I extended our apology.  Aren’t we done with this already?”

Jenus huffed.  “That giantess has some good technique there, putting me into the wall before I could avoid her.  I can respect them.  They can fight, and they’ve got a spine.”  She pressed her lips together in frustration, and shoved back a hurt reaction, before going on.  “But I thought you’d at least put up for me, Mira.  I would have for you, even if I thought you were wrong.”

Before Mira could respond, Jenus spun and walked off.

“Goddess,” Iole remarked, “She called you by your name.”

Mira bit her upper lip.

“She’ll get over it,” Iole encouraged, though there was some doubt betrayed in her tone, “Tallis and I will make sure she does.”

“I appreciate that,” Mira said, “What’s coming, what the Commander and Spectre talked about in that meeting, it’s huge.  Hard to believe a bit, I admit, but I could tell they were dead serious.  We can talk about it later in quarters.”

Iole smirked.  “Well, there’s some good news for you.  Tallis had an idea, thought it will take work on our part.  It seems the Commander agreed.  Gave her the approval by text right after the meeting break up.”

Tallis nodded and pointed to her head with a finger.  “Smart and fun.  Smart and fun.”

“Well,” Iole commented smiling, “Yes.  I have to admit, Tallis, it’s a good one.  I hope it works.”

Eteon looked down to her omni-tool and then up to Vayne before shaking her head. "A meet-and-greet planned for Tasale. This timing is... All sorts of unsettling." She shook her head and walked down the hall towards the lift so she could go to the crew deck. She had received some information on where her quarters were and the 14m meters squared of room was more than enough for her needs. Much more than her resting bunk on the Audron to be sure but she had nothing to put in the space aside from her book. Wait... Where did I put that thing...?

She paused for a moment in front of the lift and tried to remember where she had set it down. It has to be around here somewhere.

"I'm here for my equipment."

"Name?" Septerax looked up from the terminal.

"Frank Eli.  Should just be an omni-tool."

"Savant IX?"

"Yeah, that's mine."

"You don't see a lot of these around."

Frank equipped his omni-tool.  "Thanks."

"Wait, there's more." Septerax pulled Frank's tool bag from a crate on the ground. "Just arrived from the Audron not long ago.  Your weapons are here too."

"I don't suppose you'd have a Kodiak back there..."

"No, unfortunately, your shuttle could not be brought aboard."

Frank nodded "Figured so."

"But I have one of these." Septerax handed Frank a plain gray t-shirt.

"Let's see if I can't ruin this one." Frank slung his bag over one shoulder. " 'Preciate it."  He headed back towards the elevator.

He received a message on his omni-tool.

Frank shrugged, and stepped on the elevator to deck three.  He had to get cleaned up a bit first.

He hacked his way into cabin 9, and left his belongings on the table, before heading to the showers.

"Heh, and bodyguard." Vayne said as he looked to his omnitool, getting a bit of a laugh out of it. His mood soured a bit as he saw who it was from, "This aught to be good." he said as he walked down the hall to the armory, looking around at the space as he ducked to enter the room.

"......Pretty Decent." he said as he nodded his head, looking about as he walked over to the unmistakable case that lay propped against the wall. He opened it up, looking inside as he saw his freshly repaired red armor, a sight to bring a tear to any hardened mercs eyes, and reached into the neck opening, feelin around a bit before he pulled out the N7 Eagle pistol.

"Okay...looks good." he said as he opened up his other case, a weapons case, and put the pistol inside of it, looking down to the thing with a satisfied grin.

Seems not everything on the trip had been a total waste, arrest not withstanding.

And hearing a familiar voice nearby, the krogan turned to look at the source, "...Eli?" vayne said as he walked and turned a small corner, seeing no one but the quartermaster there.

"Just missed him I think." the quartermaster said as vayne nodded, "Much obliged" he said as he made his way towards the elevators, satisfyied enough to finally relax a bit.

Avan wasn't prepared for the inside of the Janiri. He expected a fancy interior and advanced designs, and enough space to fit the whole crew Naleena had described, but the ship still surpassed all expectations. From the walls to the ceiling and the amount of space in the rooms. The Combat Deck especially stood out, with the abstract, colored lines and shapes. For a military vessel, it nearly resembled an art museum.

"Impressive" he said as Naleena led the mercenary through the deck and up to his bunk bed. "It's a nice ship. We're still recruiting. I've been a part of this mission for a while now, but it's taken some unexpected turns. Long story short, I'm now in charge and this crew is here. And, Avan, be warned...most of the crew are dangerous criminals with records, like yourself."

"I gathered as much. You want nothing short of professionals, and the only professionals in this galaxy are the ones that ignore all of the rules, codes, whatever you might call them."

"I don't disagree. But soon, none of that is going to matter if this threat turns out to be everything we believe it is, and more. And since your payments have already been transferred, take the time you need to get familiar with the ship and crew, and then be prepared to, basically, leave, travel, and kill on command."

"That shouldn't be an issue. And if anyone in your crew becomes a problem-"

"The crew is my concern. Just do your job and we'll all get along fine. No killing each other."

"Right, no killing each other. Absolutely."

After they got to his room where he dropped his bags, they proceeded out and continued to walk around the crew quarters. "This is the third floor, out of six total. Main room is level 2, the CIC and war room." Naleena stood still facing him.

"And I am aware that this is a lot to take in. Things around here have been pretty...well, my entire crew just got arrested and I had to use clearance to get them out. Thankfully, everyone's back."

"Ah, well, at least no one got hurt."

"Anyway, if you have any questions just ask me or anyone else."

"It's nice to see action being taken against what obviously wasn't Geth technology. And- oh my! Gorgeous showers. Sorry, yes, we were discussing something."

"Actually, I was just leaving. Have other endeavors to attend to." Naleena rolled her eyes and walked away as Avan ran to observe the showers.

Grag was giving Jenus instructions in the kitchen. "Now make sure no one takes these meat skewers except Turians. The ship's crew will know, but the new arrivals won't. They'll give them the runs, and if I hear of anyone getting a case of the runs, I'll know and I'll deal with you, understood? Keep them on ice. Turians like these raw, and if they get to room temperature they'll spoil."

"And what if say a human insists?" Jenus asked.

"You tell them that if they eat one they'll die," Grag said, "You and I know better, but they're new. The nuts in the red bowls are for Turians and Quarians. Everything on red serving plates is for Turians and Quarians. Everything on blue plates is for everyone else. It's that simple. Can you manage that?"

"Yeah, yeah. I can manage it." Jenus said.

"Don't yeah yeah me. This is important. It's your ass if you don't." Grag said. "Now come on, let's get this stuff up to the room."

Shouldn't be too difficult, Jaimie thought to herself as her slouched form exited the med' bay, a half vacant bottle of peruvian whiskey held tightly in her right hand. Her first step caused her whole body to lurch forward and, before her drunken mind could comprehend, she was sent staggering forward. Each step was an attempt to regain her balance, but they were each as fruitless as that which came before them. Eventually, after just shy of a dozen steps, the doctor's head collided with a wall which saw to the rest of her body colliding with the floor.

Rolling over onto her back, Jaimie reclaimed the bottle she had dropped, now at only a quarter capacity, and began to nurture the bottle like a newborn to their mother's teat. She didn't even attempt to get back to her feet, her addled mind would not be able to undertake such a feat. The rest of the bottle didn't last very long. After an even shorter rest, Jaimie sluggishly brought herself up against the wall she had prior collided against and unzipped the bag she had slung around her shoulder. As she swayed from side to side she slowly brought out a banana with a very shaky right hand and peeled it with a surgical scalpel, cutting herself below the thump in the process. Tossing the scalpel bag in the bag full of apples and bananas, Jaimie began to feast on fruit after fruit as she sat in the middle of the ship's corridor.
