Modified title, what I am really concerned about is the ease of attacking on console versions (and if it allows, the use of gamepads for the PC version).

I played the DA2 demo on Xbox 360 and the skills on each of the buttons is really complicated.

Games like FFXIV ARR and Diablo 3 are making me think of having the player choose a set of skills to the buttons. Like in Lightning Returns you need to consistently customise your skills to make yourself stronger. From Diablo 3, we can have a choice of so and so many skills that affix to the gamepad, with the bonus traits you can customise your abilities to how you prefer to play. ARR has a lot more skills, but they have you toggling more menus down with the shoulder buttons.

Personally I think a Diablo style might suit more. It would make it so much easier; it would remove the need to constantly pause the game just to get the skill that you want to play without fear of being killed before you can execute it.

Although, the developers might have already planned something like this for Inquisition. Hopefully we can get a look at how the combat system will be. It would be nice to have the console/gamepad gamers not have to go through menus in their buttons to get to the ability they want (I only played it for the demo and it was horrible!)

Anything that makes the game "more like Diablo" is something I will ignore, and hopefully can if it is limited to gamepad use instead of mouse and keyboard.  :)

So you don't care about anyone but yourself? Console gamers shouldn't have to spend ages looking for the spell they want to cast >.>.

I first played DA:O on PC, then DA2 on PS3, then DA:O Ultimate on PS3, and finally back to PC for DA2 again.  While working at a game store I heard complaints about the clunky controls but, in all my switching back and forth, the first time I felt the controls were awkward was playing DA2 on PC (though I acclimated quickly).  With two layers of hotkeys and quick potions on console, I didn't find myself digging around for spells until late in one of my mage play throughs.

In Diablo 3, if you wanted variety and flavor in your combat, or survivability against different mobs, you had to stop and rearrange/respecialize your skills anyway.  That felt more cumbersome than toggling the menu on console DA2.

Also, the DA2 demo was just... not effective.  If I remember correctly they throw you up against some Darkspawn and give you a handful of skills to figure out, while in the actual game you slowly accumulate skills, giving you time to get used to the controls.  I personally assigned similar skills to the same button (i.e. AOE to circle, single target to square, evasion/something else I use constantly to triangle) so selecting skills quickly became habit.  If you enjoy the simplicity of other games, you can easily beat Normal difficulty using nothing but the 6 hotkeyed skills.

Dragon Age allows the player to choose how simple or complex they'd like the game to be with hotkeys, skill choices, extended menus, difficulty settings, using AI tactics or micro-managing party members, etc.  Please don't take away that choice for other players.  Just use the options they give you to play your own way while we do the same.

That's what pausing is for.

That said, the controls on every platform should be fully customisable.  it should be possible to map any in-game function (or set of functions) to any combination of inputs, even those functions the designers didn't anticipate you wanting to trigger automatically.

As someone who exclusively plays on console, I couldn't agree more.

I don't think "simpler" is the right word. Using abilities was easy enough, it was just time consuming to access abilities that weren't mapped to any of the six hotkeys. I also don't thing Diablo or Lightning Returns are really improvements. If anything, they require a lot more micromanagement.

I think the best solution is simply to expand the available shortcut slots. Instead of having two sets of abilites and swapping between them, it would be better to have an "ability wheel" with 9-12 (or even 15) slots that you can rotate with a shoulder button or something.

While I hope the game will be enjoyable for everyone, no matter the platform, I would also like to point out, that the PC gamers have had way more horrible conolse ports, than the other way around. Not mentioned the growing number of 'exclusive' title for consoles and so on.

So, with all due respect, I hope it turns out great for all console users - but for once having a game with good mouse and keyboard controls would be a highly appreciated change. It's a bit tiresome to be on the short end of the stick nowadays, if you are a PC user.

Ugh the Skyrim UI and all of Diablo 3 come to mind.

If we're hijacking another person's thread to talk about our own problems, I'd like to discuss this pimple on my nose.

That's an odd accusation. Find me the console gamers who spend a lot of energy and effort asking to make sure that games properly accomodate PC users. Of course I'm selfish. And none of the other gamers on here want games that accomodate their desires or preferences either; everyone here is motivated solely by selfless altruism. ;)

I'll wait.

That said, my position remains the same as it always has been: I have no problem if games are going to be on both console and PC platforms, nor that the console versions be made accomodating to console gamer preferences, just that the PC versions aren't similarly affected or changed by that development decision.

I don't consider myself part of the "PC master race" but when it comes to the two kinds of games I like most, namely strategy and CRPGs, I prefer that on the PC they not undergo changing of their controls, interfaces, or modes for console users - that changes of that nature stay in the ports/versions for console.

BTW, as I have said, there also appear to be console gamers who don't like RPGs on console to undergo what might more properly be called "action-rpg-ization," and they have rights, too. They are also part of la causa. :) And thus I don't neglect them, either. However, I think they can better speak for themselves; I don't know of their experiences.

I played the console version of both games and found that I was not bothered by a lack of quickslotted abilities. I mean we get six at least and that covers most of the abilities that I would need to spam or hit quickly. I don't really feel like pausing is a problem.

Honestly I would forget I had a bunch of other spells and modes I could use and just wait for those few to cool down.
