I prefer for a more realistic approach where characters have defined romantic interests/preferences that aren't altered by player choice. Sometimes the player character should just not be a potential romance interests type, and no amount of persuasion should convince them otherwise.

On that note I thought ME3 handled it better than DA2. I liked that for example that Garrus and Ashley were strictly heterosexual and Cortez and Traynor were strictly homosexual. It felt a bit more authentic than DA2's approach where every potential LI is interested in the player character regardless of gender.

So what? You want to character create the whole party? Change their gender, appearance, class, backstory, all that at will in a CC menu?

With Maker's Sigh, in theory you can turn Alistair into a 2-handed reaver. You could even (stupidly) put all his points in Magic and nothing else. I mean, Sylvius' point is correct, we can already transform a lot of what they are via use of Maker's Sigh, though it doesn't let you change their class. Some might argue Maker's Sigh should only be usable by the PC (to only "redo" themselves)  - but it isn't.

And, with mods, BTW, yes, you COULD change their appearance (I think there were 300 different DAO mods for that), even in some cases their class, and yes, make Alistair enjoy the love of a man, or Morrigan the love of a woman. (*)

Oddly enough, I might say to this entire argument that it's unnecessary as mods will be created to alter it (i.e. if the characters are not "universal" as written, there will be mods to make them that way; there always are) ... unfortunately, I have my doubts there will be many mods, at least and especially early on, for DA:I.

(*) Personally, I think the jury's out on whether Morrigan is attracted to women, but my personal theory as to why she isn't interested in a female PC is because she wants the child of a Gray Warden to get the soul of the OGB into, and obviously a female Warden can't give her that.

Yes there is such a thing, by that logic the lore about Abominations being powerful is false

Or the setting is just poorly constructed.  All of DA2's combat mechanics are absurd on their face.  Hawke's party's ability to do vastly more damage than any other creature in the world doesn't make any sense at all.

Ok no, don't treat every game that has romances with the same stick just because the Bioware fanbase has a fetish.

You're just a kink shaming privileged male!

Except...while the inclusion of LGBT characters Cortez and Traynor and non squadmate LI's in general were both nice on their own...together...they were...strange. That's really all I can say. I really enjoyed Steve's character and Traynor was ok too, but having both the gay exclusive LI's not be on your team still sort of 'othered' them from every other romance that came before-every other opposite sex couple (excluding Liara, but thats an entire different can of worms really). Compared to Garrus and Ashley who are THE original poster squaddies of the Mass Effect series, characters there throughout the series, and who could fight at your side. The impact of those characters doesn't carry the same weight, at least it didn't for me. So, I guess I have to disagree about Mass Effect 3 handling it better then DA2 because there was no 'othering' of the relationships I wanted to pursue in Dragon Age.  They felt just as important, valid, and present really, as any the straight relationships.

ME3? Handling romance better than DA2?

No. Unless you're playing a straight male, no. ME in general is a good example of how not to do it.  IMO, of course.

Huh, I'm not sure if I understand the "playersexuality = the PC taking control of the character's sexuality/altering the character's sexuality" argument. If the romanceable characters never clearly define their sexual orientation, how is it possible to change or control their orientation? Isn't that argument based entirely on meta, not on anything within the context of the actual game?

There are no restrictions as the writers decide what sexuality and characteristics the NPC will have so they are the ones in control.

The writers are the one making the restrictions, I advocate on no restrictions at all.

Someone brought up the distastefulness of being able to headcanon out "undesirable" sexual orientations in DA2 (and yes, the Anders/femHawke thing was awful and had he mentioned his relationship with Karl when I played as femHawke I actually would have found him more attractive, loving and endearing).

I agree.  He basically had to euthanise his LI; the equivalent of turning off a life support system, at Karl's request.  To know that he was brave enough, and strong  enough, to respect his partner's wishes, even at the cost of his own heart?  That's an extraordinary and loving person, right there.

I think that is a legitimate gripe, though with ME3 I don't think that 'other' factor was necessarily intentional. I think it was a more a problem having to account for already established characters and introduce these new characters who wouldn't have space on the squad. That Kaidan was made bisexual in ME3 I think was an attempt at making sure that not all the same sex options were locked off the squad. Ditto for Liara, who was the female same sex LI on the squad. Of course both Kaidan and Liara are bisexual rather than homosexual, but their interest in the opposite sex as well was potentially already established in ME1.

The DA:I devs wouldn't need to worry about accounting for previously established characters in the party, so if they went for ME3's approach I don't think there would be the same issue with homosexual LIs being characters left behind at the Inquisitor's fortress.

I think the problem with the answer to the 'meta' question is, yes, there appears to be a common-fan-view, a developer-view, and people headcanoning a view that appears based on neither. And as always, everybody's treating all perspectives as equally valid.  :)

So explain to me how non-warden companions can resist the taint.

Why would you expect to know that for sure?

Maybe they're just lucky.  Maybe the danger of the taint is overblown.  Or misunderstood.

Things you can't explain are simply things you can't explain.  That I don't have a better theory is not evidence that your theory is right.

Exactly why I don't like playersexual as it's been done up to now. If his sexuality was fixed, even as a bisexual, he would admit he had a relationship with karl in both cases and explain he likes you for you, and that what gender you were doesn't matter, instead of it just being relegated to a parallel universe explanation of events that is entirely dependent on the player characters gender.

Yes but the hole point of having different companions with different classes is to create a team that we like to travel with and also fight and therefore we have variation on classes and we should have variation on sexuality also so we can choose the best team for us.
If we had the ability to create the companions how we would like then the writers would become irrelevant and look for a new job.

Thew writers create the setting and write all the events that take place within that setting.  The writers are the most important part of the development team - they come up with all the lore.

Except how do you explain gaider pretty much saying we make games with full knowledge of gameplay and story segregation, and that it is the only reason your companions didn't contract the taint?

Because gameplay and story segregation are two different things

How do you roleplay under those circumstances?  Should your characters make decisions based on the reality of the story, or the reality of the gameplay?  How can you possibly reconcile that?

How they make the games is irrelevant.  It makes no sense to play them that way.
